Adorable locally own coffee shop. I think it was the owner working the front based off of his confidence and pride in his pastries. He highlighted to us the baked good that he felt came out well that day. The chocolate croissant was flakey and well balanced and the canele was the perfect little sweet treat. The blueberry muffin was jam packed with blueberries. We also ordered the rose croissant which was fun to eat. I love this bakery. The inside is very modern and bright. Small place, only a few tables inside. I have had their lemon poppy seed scone at Roseline coffee- I believe they sell nuvrei pastries there and it is my absolute favorite. So delicious and never disappoints. Today I tried their canele which is another one of my favorite pastries and they are often hard to find so I was so excited to see they had them. It was great. Crispy on the outside and custardy in the middle. You could see flecks of vanilla bean inside. The coffee was pretty standard. My coffee and canele was 7.50$ all together. Loved their rose croissant! The flavor was strong and delightful, floral and lightly sweet, fluffy inside with flaky outer crisp and light glaze. The selection was a little bit lacking with most of the options just being variants of the standard croissant. Was hoping to see a little bit more. That said what we did get overall was tasty and a solid showing for a croissant. We went with the standard and the blueberry vanilla danish. The coffee and ordering seemed fine overall and there was a few small seating areas though I wouldn't expect to be able to find a seat as it is a rather small venue. It was a little confusing they there was no area to buss or return plates. Not sure how this cafe escaped my attention. Glad I discovered this bakery last weekend. Their pastries looked too notch and that ham and cheese 'everything' croissant was amazing (even though a little pricey). I ate everything including the crumbs. It's cute inside, limited seating and it has a glass display case for the pastries, you just pick and order. Street parking! The service was alright. I tried the chocolate croissant and my boyfriend got a savory croissant; breakfast with protein of some sort. He also got a rose coffee of some sort that was seriously disappointing and he ended up just tossing. The croissants were ok, severely lacking actual filling of anything other than a regular croissant. That and the coffee being bad, honestly just not into trying it again. I didn't want to have a pastry & coffee break onsite at Powell's Books cafe or the nearby Starbucks. So thankfully, the Yelp app guided me to Nuvrei in the Pearl District, a short walk a few blocks away (9/3/24). I was warmly greeted upon entering. I was immediately dazzled by the amazing assortment of pastries and macarons. I decided to have a pain au chocolat and a 16oz mocha onsite. There's limited seating, but worked out fine for me and three others. Both items hit the spot during my 30 minute visit. Other info to pass on is that acceptable payment are debit/credit cards only. Valhrona chocolate is used with their baked goods. That's a plus for me! Owner worked with François Payard in NYC and is a native Portlander. I wanted to try something new this time, which is why I got: PISTACHIO ROSE CROISSANT - $6 This is an almond croissant with pistachios and rose flavoring added to it, and boy was it a delightful pastry! I really enjoyed it through and through! It didn't taste like it was a twice baked croissant though, so it was soft and flakey. Last time I got here I got the ROSE CROISSANT ($6) and a SCONE, which both were super yummy. Even the staff mentioned that everything that wasn't a croissant there was under rated, and I knew what she meant immediately! Finding Nuvrei, especially if you don't live or work in this hood, is challenging. On the corner of NW Everett & 9th, the bakery is not well marked. Their name is etched in the window but the window is not street level so I walked past multiple times. Determined, I called to ask specifically where they were located and was told to look for the Old Town Florist sign, walk into the building and up the stairs, door to Nuvrei is on the left. To all those reading this review, you are welcome! Brightly colored macaroons, a variety of croissants, muffins, bagels and cookies are available plus a full coffee bar. They don't make the rose or rose and pistachios croissant every day, it's up to the bakers who work on the floor below. Best chances are weekends before 11am. Inside is white and bright with a modern aesthetic. A few tables and chairs for those wanting to enjoy their coffee and pastry there. Best seats along the window for people watching. read more

As a thank you, the kind server threw in some free macarons, and when he went downstairs to get a rose & pistachio croissant (the lady had bought everything in the display case) he had doubled my order. So sweet and thoughtful! Even better, the pistachio macaron was hands-down the best macaron I had ever eaten. Not too sweet, and very savory. I arrive when they open on a Thursday morning as I wanted to have them as my breakfast for a train ride to Seattle. I was happy to see that there weren't any other customers so I could get in and out quickly. I didn't see a croissant flavor that excited me so I went with the blueberry danish and to cannele. Unfortunately both were underwhelming. The pastry for the blueberry danish had a nice flakiness to it however the blueberry cream center lack of pop of flavor. I wasn't getting sweetness, or blueberry flavor it was very very subtle. I've had a canna lay one other time from a French pastry shop in Northern California so those set the bar for what I was expecting. These did not have the right level of crème brûlée type crunch on the outside and creaminess on the inside. They were a bit too chewy. Once I discovered this place on a recent trip to Portland, I couldn't get enough. I went back every morning, sticking with the 12oz latte with oat milk each morning but branching out to try every breakfast sandwich and cookie on offer. Note they have a new location, convenient to most of the hotels downtown and Powell's Books, an Portland institution loved by locals and visitors alike. By the end of my week in Portland, I felt like a Nuvrei regular. It's flaky and buttery and the pistachio filling has the perfect amount of sweetness. I also picked up a rose croissant and a canale. I didn't care for the canale, it was really dense and not really tasty. The rose croissant was good, with a hint of rose, but I really liked the pistachio one more! Nuvrei is a bit tricky to find. First stop of my return to Portland and started here because it was walking distance from our hotel. I'd say it's a pretty quick grab and go spot. There was a line because of covid but even without covid there wouldn't be much space in the storefront so even when the majority are vaccinated, plan to just stop by but not actually stay unless they somehow fit outdoor sitting right outside of it. I got a matcha latte and a cannele. I've always been a fan of both so was really looking forward to them. The pastry was as expected and for those curious about it, it's go a kind of gooey inside that reminds me a bit of the coconut macarons with that flavor but a chewy spongey texture. Kind of an acquired taste but I've always enjoyed them at cafes! The matcha latte wasn't anything special but it was good enough for the morning. Was searching for a traditional ham and cheese croissant, which means that both the ham and cheese should be rolled with the croissant, and baked to a golden flakiness. Found Nuvrei. Cute looking place in downtown Portland. Looked promising. I'm not sure what is going on in Portland with regards to a traditional ham and gruyere cheese croissant. It seems like baking a traditional croissant with the ham and cheese inside is a mystery to Baker's throughout Portland. Instead, the majority seem to slice them open and add the ham and cheese as an afterthought, or worse, which I've experienced today at Nuvrei, is that they added mustard for some strange reason. Baffles the mind! I specifically called ahead to see if they baked the ham and cheese inside the croissants, and was told a resounding yes, but when I got there, the very nice girl at the counter told me that they no longer do it that way, and the chefs feel this way is better. When I asked if I could question the chef about this, I was told that they never come up to interact with the customer. Also weird. I also ordered a chocolate croissant, and came home to discover that the chocolate was almost nonexistent (see picture for details). The cappuccino was decent, though a little more bitter than I prefer. Sadly, I probably won't be returning to this place. Will continue my search. It's almost like I'm Sir Gwain, looking for the holy Grail. It's a shame that Portland does not understand how to make such a simple, traditional item, and instead puts a spin on redesigning something wonderful into something that is just meh.
