The one drink minimum is not a deterrent for us, and the food specials were varied and a good value. We were seated outside as the weather was cooperative, even for the hot first week of August. I ordered the sangria, a large fruity boozy concoction with an orange wedge garnish. Husband had a draft beer, an affordable choice most places. I started with the watermelon gazpacho, and loved the flavors and textures. Next was the peaches and burrata, to which I added a side of chicken breast. Creamy cheese swimming in lots of pesto, it included only three slices of grilled peach. It was lovely and I wanted more. I especially enjoyed the chopped pistachio topping. The chicken was a large portion, grilled on the flat grill then sliced. A little plain, but necessary protein. Husband ordered the ravioli, which came with fresh tomatoes, pine nuts and basil. He really enjoyed this dish, even though he requested it without the corn I would have consumed. It had a nice sprinkle of finely grated Parmesan and a puddle of olive oil. This was our first time having Sunday brunch at Papa Haydn, and we truly enjoyed it! The food was excellent, but the service really elevated the experience. Everyone was genuinely friendly and attentive, making us feel well cared for without it being over the top. What I especially appreciated was how relaxed the atmosphere was for a Sunday brunch. It wasn't crowded or noisy, so we could really sit back, savor our food, and have a good chat. We had a reservation, though it seemed like walk-ins would be perfectly fine too. After brunch, we asked if we could move outside for dessert, and they were very accommodating. The service was absolutely unacceptable from beginning to end. We waited an excessive amount of time for dessert, despite the fact that all the staff had to do was slice the cakes and bring them to the table. There was no reasonable excuse for such a simple task to take so long. To make matters worse, it took over 15 minutes just to receive our beers and desserts after ordering them. Our water glasses sat empty for most of the meal and were never refilled once. The waiter was inattentive, rarely checked on our table, and seemed completely uninterested in providing even the most basic level of customer service. We spent more time waiting than actually enjoying our meal. And you expected tip for your service? What a joke!!!!!! For the prices charged, this level of service is inexcusable. A restaurant can survive a mistake, but it shouldn't fail at the fundamentals of hospitality. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had, and it completely ruined what should have been an enjoyable evening. We stopped in for dessert after an evening elsewhere in Portland. The parking lot had space and was FILLED with fragrant jasmine flowers. We were seated immediately, but waited a short while for our order to be taken. They seemed quite busy. The dessert menu takes up a whole page. You can see many items in the front case when you walk in. There were at least 10 gluten free options, all clearly marked on the menu. All looked delicious and the decision was difficult for once. My dad had the mango black tea panna cotta and I went for the raspberry gateau. The panna cotta had great flavor. Subtle on the tea, strong with the mango. A generous portion but light enough that it could be finished. The raspberry gateau was rich and chocolatey. The raspberries were a necessity to add dimension to the dish. I recommend this location for celebrations, evenings out, or for a sweet treat just because. Everything is clean and it feels fancy and special without being overly exclusive. First time here, and I had no idea how popular this spot was! We went around 8 PM and the restaurant was packed to the brim. Luckily, our group of five didn't have to wait too long before getting seated. We all ordered different desserts so we could try a variety of things. The crème brûlée was really good, super creamy and definitely one of my favorites. The boccone dolce was a meringue based dessert, which unfortunately wasn't really my thing. The Passion dessert was yummy with a nice sour tang to it. We also tried the triple chocolate cake, which was very rich, dark, and sweet. If you're a huge chocolate lover, this might be the perfect dessert for you. We ordered an affogato as well, and their vanilla ice cream was so good! One thing I didn't get to try was the raspberry matcha cloud, but it looked really good and I think my friend enjoyed it. Overall, I can definitely see why this place is so well known and popular. I always love the ambience at 23rd location. Staff is incredibly kind and helpful. The menu on Valentine's Day was a bit limited. Not sure if that's normal. We got the special pasta of the day, turmeric pasta with scallops. It was a light taste which was pretty tasty. The raspberry Gateau is very decadent. I should have asked for more raspberry sauce. My friend got the cheesecake which usually I'm not a fan of cheesecake, however it was not as sweet as others and lighter, I loved it and would order the cheesecake next time. My napkin and my fork were dirty when I sat down at the table which I don't mind but it was a bad start to this experience. They tried to seat us in the back uglier section of the restaurant even though there were so many empty tables already set up in the main white section and they had us wait for no reason. This restaurant is a staple in Portland. They have two locations, this one in NW and another in SE. Both have amazing food and desserts, with quality ingredients. I've never had a subpar meal or dessert here. Parking can be tricky as it's mostly street parking and this area in NW is busy. There is a paid parking lot behind the restaurant, but it fills up fast, and can be hard to navigate with a full-size vehicle. I took a friend here to celebrate her birthday. I made reservations online through Open Table. We came on a Sunday around noon. We were seated as soon as we arrived. We were lucky enough to get a window table. It was perfect! The entrance can get a little congested because the host podium is located right inside the door. The decor inside has a nice and cozy vibe. Sunday mornings and afternoons they offer their brunch menu. There's a nice variety of breakfast and lunch options available. We each ordered the burger and fries. The burgers were cooked perfectly. The fries were nice and crispy on the outside, and not greasy at all. They only had ketchup for the fries, no ranch available. I just ordered a side of mayonnaise to mix with the ketchup. Our food came out timely and was the perfect temperature. For dessert, we ordered the raspberry gateau and lemon chiffon cake. They were both so decadent and delicious! We took half of both home. They are a little pricey. I spent $85 for our lunch, including a 20% tip. Seems pricey for lunch, especially when we didn't order drinks, just water. Our server was attentive, friendly and helpful. There was one specific instance where we saw this delectable looking lemon cake in the case at the front. There were plenty of slices. Two parties at our table wanted it and by the time our waitress came to take our order (20-25 mins after she led us to the table) she informed us that someone had just ordered the last slice of lemon cake. Instant heartbreak. With that one sentence, 4 people had their dreams crushed. Mouths no longer watering. It didn't matter what we ordered after that because nothing would replace the stolen lemon cake. The desserts are overpriced for the quality and taste. Food is fine. Nothing great, nothing terrible. I've had the French Onion Soup, Cuban Sandwich, Salmon Niçoise salad, and Cuban Sliders thus far. I will say that my fiancé loves the Salmon Niçoise salad though. Atmosphere feels like an upscale-casual sit down restaurant. Prices are a little high but within standard range. Where I have major issues is with the service. Despite having a ton of people working, they are terribly disjointed and not very effectively managed. In order to get to-go food you have to wait in the dessert line, which can sometimes be terribly long and moves like molasses, especially since the dessert folks also have to prepare dessert for the restaurant customers. If you are that busy maybe consider adding a second hostess and give them the capability to accept payment and hand off take-out food orders that don't involve dessert. Honestly, I don't really get the hype here. There are much better restaurants in Portland that I won't rush back. However, I'm not a big dessert person so maybe that's where I'm missing the boat. read more

During our visit to Portland, one of the places I was most excited about was Papa Haydn. They seem to have loads of amazing looking desserts! I saw that they also have tasty looking food too. So was double excited. We were welcomed with warm and friendly staff. And we arrived about 10 minutes before their happy hour ends, which they call "Cocktail Party." We quickly put in our drink orders, Papa Haydn Espresso Martini. It was so good! Strong and sweet, decadent and flavorful. We also ordered some food food from their Cocktail Party. Roasted Cauliflower Bites and Cubano Slider. Cauliflower came in a small, beautiful copper pot. They had a nice amount of cream coating, but cauliflower pieces were a bit harder texture than I preferred. Cubano Slider had an amazing aroma, and packed with flavor. It had melty cheese, every bite was delicious. It came with loads of fresh salad too. Then, from regular menu, we added an order of French Onion Soup ($12). The soup came piping hot! Broth was earthy and flavorful, very comforting. It was a perfect soup! Now, time for desserts! Deciding which dessert to order was not an easy task. Everything looked and sounded so good! There were three of us, and we ordered four desserts in total. Raspberry Gateau was velvety and creamy, very chocolate-y but somehow not heavy. Raspberries were ripe and tart, a great way to balance the sweetness of the chocolate. So good! Baked Alaska had chocolate in the middle that was a bit thick, making it hard to cut/slice to eat. Otherwise, it was delicious! I wish if the cake was a bit bigger, as it was sliced thin. It sure was delightful. Passion was mostly passion fruit mousse with raspberry mousse center. Mousse was light and velvety, and passion fruits puree was amazing! Boccone Dolce is one of their most popular and well-known dessert. This one was quite big, and was like a Pavlova, melt in your mouth. It was just unbelievably delicious, every bite was heavenly! Our visit to Papa Haydn was a success! I have visited both locations many times and generally always have a decent time. I visited Papa Hayden this afternoon around 3:30 p.m. with the intention of picking up desserts to go before meeting friends elsewhere. Upon arrival, the host--who was cold and unwelcoming-- you know the type, self-important bloated queen without a purpose type..told us the restaurant was closed while transitioning to the dinner period. While I understand not seating guests during this time, I found it odd for a restaurant known for its bakery and desserts to refuse dessert sales between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., even for takeout. This felt like a missed business opportunity, especially since the desserts are clearly displayed and positioned at the entrance. We were not requesting to be seated--only to purchase a decent quantity of desserts to go. Unfortunately, the situation was made worse by the rotund host's rude attitude, which was unnecessary and unprofessional. A more courteous approach would have gone a long way. I host many events and have ordered numerous desserts in the past. If it weren't for how much I enjoy the desserts themselves, this experience would make me reconsider returning in the future. read more
