You can totally feel the passion and clearly see the expertise with all the products and also so cool to see the in house equipment through the big round window inside. The shop was open, bright, and colorful with the lovely pastel textured backdrop. The ice cream scoop menu was super cute and offer dairy-free options as well! Street parking available and the location was great with lots of food options within walking distance. Service was so friendly and helpful and we loved the big windows all around so you can have a fun view no matter where you are sitting. They offered coffee drinks, matcha, of course chocolates and in-house baked goodies. The brownie was SO decadent without being too rich and wow the flavors had so many layers to it - honestly the best brownie I've ever had! The strawberry ice cream was creamy and made with real berries in small batches for maximum quality and flavor. In the shop, they have pastries, coffees, and ice cream. The interior is industrial-minimal with a touch of pastel whimsy. While seating isn't the most comfortable, I enjoy the space - it feels like there's room to breathe and think in here. It smells amazing, as you can see their production and packaging going on adjacent. The friendly person working made great recommendations on what to get, since it was my first time in. Not everybody knows of this chocolate shop, but they might soon because it's so good. Their hot chocolate drinks are superb. I just tried their rose and cardamom hot chocolate and it tasted so divine. It's way lighter than a latte and has way better flavor. Their chocolates, while pricey, are really good. I love that you can sample the bars before you buy. And they make such great gifts for friends who love to experiment with chocolate. This superb cafe and shop, run by a small but passionate team, is a must-visit in Portland. This is the bean-to-bar chocolate maker Sebastian Cisnero, who's been around Portland since 2009 but finally found a permanent place here. It's a bright and inviting space. Get one of the drinking chocolates with the housemade marshmallows. They are all good. (Have coffee if you must, but this is a chocolate maker...they make chocolate from cacao beans in the back.) The chocolate-covered caramel sticks (everything is made in-house) are also a great accompaniment to the drinking chocolate. Just remember, two people (for now) run this entire place, so service may be a bit slow. The wait is worth it (and you need to stop acting privileged by whining about slow service in small businesses). Sebastian is working to restore a couple of antique chocolate-making machines, and you can see them through a portal window. That is going to be an awesome thing to see when they are working. For now, the chocolate-making space is in the back and out of site, but they are making chocolate from scratch back there. And it's the chocolate that's for sale in the space, and that is used in all the products served here. This superb chocolate maker deserves support. I looooove this shop: If I'm within a few blocks I usually think to swing by. It's a combo coffee shop / chocolate shop / ice creamery, and I'm usually in the mood for one or all of those. The drinks (esp. mochas and hot chocolates) are made with care and high quality ingredients. The chocolate bar options are sublime. They have $2 tasters in case you want to try several or just want a nibble. If there are cookies, you know they are going to be hecka good. The chocolate chip cookie was pretty good. It had a nice underdone, cookie dough-like center. I really love that stuff. It was also lightly salted on the outside in a way that was just right. However, it wasn't warm. I feel like being warm and straight-outta-the-oven is a huge part of what makes a cookie good. I know that logistically it's probably difficult for a place to provide that, but still, it doesn't change the fact that you're probably better off just baking your own cookies at home. The hot chocolate was weak. That said, I almost always think hot chocolate is weak. I like my hot chocolate rich and chocolatey. Hot water with the powdered sh** doesn't do it for me. I think they do get an extra star for that marshmallow though. They do a great job. It's covered with powdered sugar and then blow-torched right in front of you so that you get that browned (but not blackened), crispy exterior. Still, for a place that specializes in chocolate, I feel like it's appropriate to have high standards for this sort of stuff. I'd go to Roste in NW Portland instead. read more

The kids had their first day of school this week, yay! To celebrate we went out for ice cream and wanted to try somewhere new. Cloudforest came up after a deep dive through a long list of contenders. I noticed the rating for Cloudforest is a bit low, but saw my trusted Yelpie(as my husband calls us) friends have had great things to say... so off we went. First off I want to emphasize that when we walked in, I was so pleasantly surprised to see the shop is absolutely gorgeous, spacious and literally sparkling clean. There are plenty of seats inside and out. Samples of the in-shop made chocolate bars, some heavenly candles and more. A fabulous vintage shop is attached next door. We ordered our ice cream, also made at the shop. It's small batch, and oh so fresh. My daughter had the strawberry buttermilk, son the triple vanilla with freshly made chocolate sauce, and for me the cocoa fruit sorbet. We all loved our ice creams to the last spoonful. Mine, was new for me :)! The cocoa fruit in the sorbet is made from the pulp of a cocoa pod. It's the white inner part around the seeds. The sorbet was sweet, but not overly, with a refreshing & somewhat tart finish. Easily my favorite sorbet out of any I've ever had. The service is impeccable. The owner is cheery, and happy to talk over the shops goods; as well as the process of how things are made. I noticed she washed her hands between each customer. As a person who struggles with borderline OCD-when it comes to cleanliness, I very much appreciated this! There's a bathroom available for customer use in the shop, so I could wash my hands too ;). The kids and I sampled the 70% chocolate bar. The chocolate luxuriously melts in your mouth, with a definite note of the cocoa fruit, with a velvety consistency, a complex but not too sweet or bitter taste. For my husband, we brought home a gorgeous and generous in size passion fruit Macron. He reports it was delicious. read more

Was walking by this place, thought it was a coffee shop but then noticed the stone mill in the side window. I knew they were grinding something fine! Went in to find out it is -- chocolate! They roast and grind their own from cacao, and make it into delicious (and probably healthy) hot drinks. How did I not know about this place before? (And I'm mad I missed their holiday giveaway on Instagram.) I had the Pure Dark, a very grownup cup of hot chocolate. Not very sweet. Very chocolatey but not overbearing. Has the heart-swirl on top like a latte. Gets you buzzy and happy and satiated. The decor is artsy-minimalist, like an art gallery between shows. Goes great with the drinking experience. Well we were expecting more amazing chocolate flavors since this is run by a chocolatier. The hot chocolate was mild chocolate flavor but we did really like the handmade vanilla marshmallow. But putting it in the hot chocolate was a bit of a waste. I would just eat it alone and enjoy. We also got a chocolate chip cookie based on the Portland monthly article and we both described it as 'different'. I was really excited they were serving ice cream, apparently it was their first day. I got the salted chocolate, and it was super rich and delicious. I got a Single, as you can see, it wasn't very big for $5, I can't imagine the how much you get with the Little size. That's the reason I took off a star, so pricey for such a small scoop. I also got chocolate chip cookies to take home, and they were amazing warmed in the toaster oven! Was really looking forward to trying out the drinking chocolate here but unfortunately we weren't able to. First, they opened late, second after we waited for 20 minutes past opening time for any type of drink to be ready, and third, when they finally told us it would be another 15 minute before anything was ready we decided it wasn't worth the wait. I understand a slow/soft open or whatever you want to call it but when you already don't open until 12 pm, I kind of expect you to actually be open and have some services ready.
