Okay, I have to update my review and add two stars. Decided to go in today to pick up a dozen doughnuts to share with my co-workers. Had not been in since March, so it had been several months. Long story short, instead of the usual unfriendly customer "service", I had a pretty decent experience. The counterperson was not unpleasant at all. (SURPRISE!) The doughnut selection was kick ass and completely delicious. My co-workers were very happy to get a big box of Cresent Doughnuts. So, damn it, I am updating my review and saying that yes, I am a fan. Trust and believe, the counter people may not be the friendliest, but the doughnuts are the real thing. I love the donuts at this shop and that it is a local business. Today the donuts I got were RAW in the center. However their staff need a serious attitude adjustment. Went in to get a dozen and was talked to like I was stupid and complete dirt. He just stood there and I asked him if we had a dozen and he said "theres 7 speciality and 5 regular so seven plus five is?" In the most condescending tone he could muster. Makes me not want to return if this is what you think of your customers. No other bakery in town treats you this way. Would rather go to Jacks or even the gas station before returning here and being talked to like I'm an inconvenience, because if that's the case I will just take my money else where kay? These are easily the best donuts in Bloomington BUT if you've ever been to a larger city with decent donut shops you had better check your expectations at the door. Delicious, cheap, lots of selection. I went to pick up donuts for a friend's birthday on a late afternoon and they still had a lot of donuts ready. I was afraid they might taste old, but they tasted fresh even the next day. I bought powdered sugar donuts, and raised donuts with chocolate frosting and fall sprinkles. I also got a dozen powdered donuts holes, which were highly addicting. They were loved by all and didn't last long in the kitchen. Definitely a quality place if you want real donuts! I'm not a donut fan. I think I get the business model though. They bake sugary goods and I buy them for others to eat. I think there's a breakdown with the transactional side of things; the staff must avoid all sugar because they definitely are not sweet. $10 for a dozen of uninspired, average (I tried a few bites...didn't love it), and poorly loved baked goods? For the longest time, I thought that this place was out of business every time I've driven by till a co-worker told me that they're actually still open and in fact do exist. Lets get straight to the point, I walked in to be greeted by a kid that gave me quite the amount of sass for a first timer (I can handle it though, I'm an Easter Coaster). I could tell that this place has a local flair and probably is some sort of local staple in B-town based on appearances (then again who am I to judge).The selection of donuts are all pretty standard and classic, I bought 4 donuts because they have a $3.00 minimum if you want to use a credit card - if it's under that bring cash! After the first bite of their Yeast-risen chocolate glazed donut I was won over. Super soft, pretty much melted into my mouth after every bite, and it wasn't soaked in grease from the deep fryer. Overall, I would say solid donut and I will be coming back for sure. ---- 10 minutes later---- Was trying to pace myself with the donuts I bought, but gave into eating the Blueberry Cake donut, and it was so goood. I had a total hankering for doughnuts over the weekend ... And never fulfilled that hankering. But I woke up this morning and my husband must have woke up extra early before work because.... A box from cresent was sitting on my kitchen island ...( my husband gets 5 stars too) I've seen a few reviews on here about customer service ... Those people felt rushed or felt not being attended to: imagine person X is picking out some masterful Instagram "picture perfect" dozen... All while asking about gluten free this and a nut allergy that, while person Y just needs a dozen yeast doughnuts (melt in your mouth, yum!) for the office ...and person Z wants a single blueberry cake doughnut for the road ( I've never liked cake doughnuts but theirs are something else special ... They make it almost better than the yeast ... Unreal... And amazing ) ... You have to understand they are a business ... I used to live right around the corner from this shop and my Saturday morning routine always included a visit here. I loved their donuts and still compare other donut shops to this one! I am a big fan of "mom and pop" donut shops and visit them around the country. The best ones are ones such as this: appear to not have changed since the 50s, 60s, or whenever they opened, limited selection of beverages (i.e. no lattes frappes etc) - and, though some have complained about this, a crabby worker. Yes, the latter part is a given in shops like this! Anyway, when I go back in town I still get a glazed twist and a sour cream/old fashioned. Hello all! This morning I had an important doctor's appointment so my dad drove down from Indy to accompany me. Since he is a #classic dad, we arrived at my appointment an hour early. A lot of adults rely on caffeine to get them through the day so he was ANAL about getting coffee from some place. I know the area better than he does so I convinced him to come here so I could make him buy me donuts. He got coffee and I got 6 donuts! I didn't go too wild on picking out unique flavors because I had never been here before so I wanted to play it safe. I got sprinkly ones for me because they looked the prettiest and I got other ones to give to the people I love because I am so sweet. My dad said the coffee was average. I'm sure it's just like Folgers or something. My donut was good and FUN to eat because of the colors. They were not too dense which is great. The line was fast and the selection process was easy. The donuts themselves are okay, but the tone is quite the unfriendliest I've ever experienced. This place is ridiculously cheap! I bought so many donuts that I had donut-coma afterwards. Definitely a MUST if you go to Bloomington. It doesn't get 5 stars because the attendant got a few things wrong in my order. However, we were 3 people talking back and forth among ourselves and with him, which can be confusing. These are THE best donuts. If you've been there, you know who the "rude" staff member is. And I'll admit, I was a little insulted/bothered/confused by her attitude at first. I seriously just found this place, and as it now is just down the street from my apartment, I'm likely to be walking over here regularly to get a donut that completely annihilates the point of walking over to it. Their donuts are good. Great even. Blueberry donut holes? Fantastic. Old fashioned donuts? Also fantastic. Yeast donuts? Quite good. (I've always been a more cakey-donut girl though, so don't judge the slightly less than stellar "quiet good". It's a taste preferance). The inside is a little dinky, and the staff is hit or miss. The blonde lady I had was grumpy and seemed to despise everything that existed on this planet and made it seem like me asking for half a dozen blueberry donut holes was akin to asking her to work fifty hours out in the fields detassling corn without food or water or help, but hey. The guy I had a few days later (see: I just discovered this place, I'm by no means an expert yet!) was nice and actually smiley, he just looked exhausted. Best donut shop in B-town! The selection is very good, and the product is always fresh. I particularly love the glazed twists. They are gooey mounds of heaven in your mouth. We live just a minute from here, so I often stop in. Get there early, because it's SO worth it. The phone policy is right on. I wish more establishments had that rule around here. Just got back from my first (and last) visit to Cresent Donuts, and first impressions are most certainly the most important to a business. My first impression is what a hole in the wall... small, untidy, and generally a drab atmosphere. I went here on a Friday afternoon, and there was literally only 4 types of donuts available. That's it. The donuts, while they do have some good flavor, are far from saving the horrible experience here... First off, the staff... rude, belittling, and generally giving a sense of not wanting to be bothered with service. Not the type of thing you want to be projecting into your customers' mind. Second, the lack of either attention, or the lack of knowledge, about the product. I asked if they had Boston Cream donuts, and was told yes, they have some. So I ordered a dozen, 8 being Boston Cream. I got them home, and surprise! NOT Boston Cream, but whipped cream in the donut. Boston Cream is a custard filling. Not making any bonus points LYING to their customers. Third, prices... definitely not "cheap" as everyone seems to be saying. $10 for a dozen, when other places normal have them for $7 or $8 dollars, isn't screaming for me to go back for a repeat visit. Now, sadly, the good doesn't shine through here enough to save my frustration, and anger, at being lied to, treated like an annoyance, and paying for something I didn't really get. The doughnuts are no better than any other brand. I am bothered by a couple of things. One, their store policies are not customer friendly. There is a sign on the door that says you cannot talk on the phone while ordering. Well, my kids sent me there to buy doughnuts and each has their favorites. So instead of taking the order on the phone and just tell the person what I need, I had to get out of the line and wrote everything down and get back in line again. This is an inconvenience. Two, there are a lot of signs that day you cannot drink or eat anything inside the store. This is not a library. It is a fricking doughnut shop. Three, the cashier, I don't know if he is the owner, looks quite tired and bored with what he is doing. He is blunt and not s smiling or friendly. I asked about the doughnuts he has on the shelf and he got defensive and snappy and he told me they were the same flavor as the one on the shelf in the front, as if I was supposed to know it already and I was not supposed to ask this stupid question. I'm a fiercely loyal fan of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but my world was shaken when I came across Cresent Donut. Honestly, I was skeptical. A 24-hour doughnut joint? Come on. Undeniably, this family-owned establishment of pure doughnut magic is the best there is. I didn't find the price too high, and if you go late enough at night (guilty as charged) you can get bulk deals. Does the service come with a plastered-on smile? Well, no. Tip: Go in and decide quickly, and do NOT talk on your cell phone. They're a busy group of people, so you will get the best service if you don't waste their time. I bring every out of town visitor here, I find myself here after the bars (half price after 11 PM!), and I pick up a dozen when I'm having people over. It's around midnight on a Sunday night. The moon hangs low over the cemetery as a band of youths wanders the streets, one for each day of the week, hungry for a late night snack. Behold! a 24-hour donut shop, not 100 yards from the nearest gravestone. The youths enter with bright eyes and growling stomachs. Rock music can be heard playing in the kitchen, where a balding man and an apprentice are at work on the next morning's batch. The man saunters to the counter. "Evening, gentleman," he might have begun. "The donuts in the case are 2-for-1s, and the prices are on the wall. What'll you have?" Fingers are pointed and varieties are uttered. Old-fashioned, cake, and yeast-risen, chocolate, powdered sugar, glazed, plain, and coconut; one dozen in all. "One orange juice!" quickly becomes four, and the price at checkout is $10, give or take 64 cents. The youths sit at the counter and distribute the donuts, eating and drinking especially merrily. Just got back from our first visit to Cresent Donuts. For 6pm on a Sunday night, there weren't a whole lot of doughnut options (mostly the frosted rings), but they tasted fresh! DH got a jelly filled one, and while I'm not a fan of the frosted top, it was good. The kids each got their chocolate glazed ring, and it made their nights. I chose a glazed crawler, and it was melt-in-your-mouth perfect. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is for the staff. The man working tonight didn't charge us for the kids' doughnuts or the milk we got for them. It seemed really nice, until he started commenting on how beautiful they are. Then it got creepy.
