i've been coming here for probably seven years now, and after going to a few different people i settled on ona and have seen her for i think the past five years. she somehow manages to make my hair look longer after the cut, which i just don't understand, even with the mounds of hair lying on the floor that i know were just cut off of my head. i was growing my hair out for a while so i always enjoyed this miracle. her color is awesome. so blended and not chunky. and one time it came out not exactly how i wanted it and she gladly fixed it that day so that i was happy with the results. i've also had experience with the owner because of a hack job a previous stylist (who has not been there for years) did, and he graciously offered me a free cut and color and a sincere apology even though it wasn't his mistake and it was nice that he honestly cared about keeping his clients happy. ona rocks. crew rocks. go here! read more

It seems like you were more excited to open up your shop in Hollywood. First of all, it's rude to talk on the phone while cutting someone's hair, and you also don't just leave a family waiting for you to go buy bottles off your buddy. Ask for Kat if you're getting your hair colored! Kat Martin is the best at what she does. She is a balayage and ombré expert. She is super sweet and will do exactly what you want! I live in LA county so that's quite a distance away from crew salon, but I absolutely love coming to this place. One, for the look of the place, which to me is simplistically trendy if that makes sense. Secondly, the place it's located in and the city, just feels good being around that area. The downside is that parking at the lab is the worst, so good luck finding a spot. I usually go to the barbershop connected with the salon, and I will say that both the barbers know how to give a good cut. This last time I went I wanted a change though so I went to the salon instead. Luckily I was able to get a walk in appointment with Valerie who was nice and seemed to know about hair. I asked for a specific style and unfortunately she kind of failed to deliver but the outcome was acceptable. Although at $45 compared to $25 at the barbershop I would have wished to see something closely resembling what I asked for. I give this place 5 stars because all the previous times I've gone I've had great experiences so I won't let one time change my mind about this salon. I did appreciate my most recent cut and the stylist's professionalism. I'm sure on another visit I'll be pleased with the results. read more

Ask for Greg the barber. He makes it a point to ask a lot of questions about what exactly it is you want and is even willing to teach you a thing or two about styling your hair. I used to go to Hawleywoods which I found the barbers there to be pretentious. I'm much happier with my haircuts from Greg and the whole atmosphere. Parking can be difficult to find but you can always park across the street at the Camp's complimentary valet. They take walk ins so you don't have to have an appointment. The barbershop is great vibes and they usually have a cool movie playing and/or good music. read more

I'm giving this a three star rating, as there are a few very talented stylists at this place. Unfortunately, two recent updates have caused me to stop giving business to Crew Salon. For one, Jordan is no longer there. He was, literally, the best men's stylist the place had. In addition, I tried to go back and get a haircut from Chris...but he royally screwed up my hair. I prefer to make an appointment with a high end, well-respected establishment, then let the stylists do whatever they want with my hair. This has never been an issue at Crew Salon, at I'm generally satisfied with the results. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of doing so with Chris...and I had to go to ANOTHER stylist to fix the mess he made of my hair. To make matters worse, this was before a huge meeting I had the next day...and finding a last minute stylist to undue his work was frustrating and costly. My advice? I've always been fussy about my hair, so I don't trust it to just anyone. One Sunday, I absolutely needed a haircut, and Crew happened to be open. Ali Jara did my hair color, and she really worked with me to find just the right color. The next time I was in for color, she suggested a few low-lights, and they looked amazing! After that, I pretty much go with whatever she suggests, and she always takes into account that, while I want something fun, it needs to be professional for work. Angelo cut my hair, and it's honestly the first time I've ever looked in a mirror and said "I love my hair!" He not only does trendy (yet still conservative enough for work) styles, he takes into account the shape of your face and head and works to find a style that really works with you! He understands that hair is only part of the person and doesn't stand alone, so you not only end up with a great cut, you get a cut that is great for you! I never imagined I'd be spending $60 for a haircut and $90 for color (plus tips, of course!), but it is so worth it! I can't imagine going to anyone but Ali and Angelo! read more

Soon I will be moving from the OC to LA, but you bet I will be coming back to Crew to have my hair cut by Shanna B. When I arrived in the OC, I looked for the person with the best hairdo and asked him (men have better do's than women do in the OC, it turns out) for his stylist. That stylist, Shanna B of Crew at the Lab, I'd elevate to the Greek pantheon of Olympic gods as the scissor wielding, tattooed goddess of shearing. She gives the best head massages, the most open-minded / least opinionated / snob-free but well considered consultations, the best chats (that is, if you don't fall asleep on her regularly as I do), the fiercest concentration (often required for my challenging do's), and the sweetest energy. I've been going to her since fall 2005 despite the fact that the cost of her cuts take up a large percentage of my measly graduate student stipend. In fact, a large number of my colleagues have begun going to Shanna despite their measly graduate student stipends because she does such a faboo job. I trust her so thoroughly that I let her chop off my very long locks into a punky pixie do while I, again, dozed away in her chair. That I did ought to be testament enough to her mastery of her art. And she gives free "bang" trims so that you can maintain your do as long as possible before having to return again for a cut. Considerate of practical concerns as well as masterful! What more could you desire in a stylist? UPDATE: It's now more than three months since I've moved to Silver Lake. This review is specifically for Tattie Elliot or as they know her "Taylor". I really want to start off by saying that hands down, she is the best colorist that I've ever gone to in my life. To start, I have very thin (in every way) and stubborn hair. I'm also addicted to changing up my style every few months or so, so it can get a little complicated and my hair very easily can be overprocessed by someone who doesn't know what they're doing- especially considering how stubborn it is. I first went to her when I had very dark hair (almost black and what wasn't grown out WAS dyed multiple times black) and I wanted to do what I honestly thought was impossible, which was take my hair to a light brown, "as light as you can go" is what I told her. To begin, she sat me down and told me very honestly, I will go as light as I can but I don't want to damage your hair. And we then went over a book and she discussed with me different shades of brown and my skin tone and would and would not work for me. I EXTREMELY VALUE this consult part of the process, she is honest and manages your expections with what can realistically be done. To being the dying process, I was supplied with alcoholic beverages (my second fave part) and not at an extra charge! We all know half the reason we even get our hair done is for a little r&r right? So why not top off the experience? She also washed and conditioned (that also includes a little head massaging) and then finally gets started on the coloring process. She is very attentive and she has never left the dye on too long and also doesn't just let you sit in silence, she engages you in convo, really makes the experience an enjoyable one. Needless to say, by the time my hair came out, the color was so even I thought I was seeing things. And she managed to take me about 4 shades lighter with the exact tone of brown we discussed! I was really really happy with it...and her accuracy at what she was capable of doing- she even added some black chunks in to break up the color and add a little variety. Since then I went for a touch up and she did her magic again, matching my root color to my hair color seamlessly and again, without adding any damage. I've even gone back a 3rd time and went dark again. I have another appointment with her this Saturday with instructions to "do whatever you want, the only restriction is it has to be office appropriate." I can't wait to see what she comes up with...!!!!! She is worth every penny, long gone are the days where I hunt for discounts at Salons becuase let me just say, its not worth a discount if you come out looking like you let a 5 yr old bleach your noggin- my hair is healthy and split end free and able to continue its chameleon tendencies thanks to Tattie :) read more

My stylist was Lindsay. I've been to her twice. She is definitely an expert in the hair field. I came in wanting a change. And change was what I got. At the moment she introduced herself to the very end, Lindsay was the friendliest stylist I have ever been to. We talked throughout the whole cut, NOT awkward at all. I told her what I wanted and she did exactly what I expected and even better. That day I chopped my hair off and got a bob. Although I don't go here anymore, I do recommend her to those of you who are/will go here. She is awesome! I get my hair cut and colored by Max every month. He helped me get out of my comfort zone and styled my hair differently than I've ever done it. Max is patient with me and puts in a ton of effort to maintain my edgy cut and color. We have a blast and I am always stoked to see how my color comes out. After trying several salons and barbers in OC, I went to Crew on the recommendation of a friend. That was several years ago and I haven't been anywhere else since. The stylists are outstanding. I have used Nev for several years and have never had a cut that I wasn't happy with. She has always offered to do free touch-ups or adjustments, but that has never been necessary. The only downside is party can be rough if you go around noon on a weekday as it is surrounded by several popular restaurants. read more
