I had heard about the Crimson Coward when it first came to town. It seems like a very well-established name, with decent food offerings. It sits right across the street from one of my top 5 favorite fried chicken shops, Nash & Smashed. They have some decent competition - That's what I thought before I stopped in. I am very thankful to the Crimson Coward chain for offering a $5 discounted meal for first-time visitors! I ordered the 4 piece tenders, in country style (no heat). My body seems to be that of a crybaby when it comes to handling spice. I ordered the food just after they opened, at 11:06, thru their online storefront (website). I arrived to pick up the food at around 11:20. They were just packaging it up to go out the door, and I was the only one in the restaurant. I'm sure if there was a line or quite a few more orders it would have taken longer. The food was packed in a small folding box (just like KFC style), but contained no napkins - so be sure to grab those before you go! The chicken was moist, tender, and juicy! The breading was thin, yet slightly crunchy. It seems that they make this perfectly! My compliments to the crew. It was done very well. The tenders were as big as my hands, and just as thick! They were quite large! I'm not sure I've ever seen tenders quite so big, that weren't 50+% breading alone. But no - these were genuinely large - They must have been the beast of a chicken yard. Tender. Juicy. Perfection. You get 4 slices of pickle with the meal, and for a pickle-lover like me that was great! They're not terrible high-class tasting, like a Claussen-brand pickle, and have a hint of bread-n-butter taste to them, but they're decent! But, the reason for the score being as it is, is because the flavor profile didn't fit to the fireworks sparkle that hit the chicken towards a home run. The seasoning landed a bit short, and flat. I was expecting a myriad of blended herbs and spices to match the exquisite look and tenderness of the chicken - but it never came. I couldn't tell you what herb or spice it was that felt so strongly, but there was one element in the spice package that dominated everything else, and just fills the nose and mouth with that one flavor over all else. It's not a bad taste by any means. It was quite enjoyable as-is, but it's nothing overtly special to write back home about. I wouldn't travel from far just to get this chicken. One other thing that bothered me was that they seemed to offer mac & cheese with other things mixed in but yet not the mac & cheese by itself on the side. Yet, you can get slaw, onions, pickles, and all these other condiments and flavors by themselves - just not mac & cheese alone. Sad! A terribly missed profit-maker for sure... If there's one thing people want with good fried chicken it's mac & cheese! I believe that's written in soul food lore somewhere... Lastly, the sauces that came with the food -- You can pick your own, and by default I went with the Crimson Sauce, and ranch. The ranch fell a bit flat. It's not an expensive or savory ranch; it's just a bottom of the barrel 2D ranch. No eccentric savory flavors, or myriad of tastes. There was clearly no buttermilk in it either, it just felt a bit sad. That's not to say it wasn't good, but it left me longing for a bit more. The Crimson sauce was good. It had a tiny bit of heat -- similar to something like your average green peppers, or mildly spicy fresh-made salsa would give off. Something your old-school no-spice white granny could order and eat with no complaining. The sauce was good and flavorful. Between the 4 tenders, 1 cup of ranch, and 1 cup of crimson sauce, I finished my meal just as the sauce cups were being wiped empty with the last bit of chicken meat. A refreshing and enjoyable experience, but nothing to drive out of your way for. I enjoyed the meal, and would come back - but I wouldn't go craving it once a week for the rest of my life. There wasn't anything that I ate where I feel I would crave it. You order at a counter and they call your number when it is ready Super casual. Would I come back? Sure. The people serving the food were also very kind and accommodating. The reason I docked a star is due to the speed in which the food comes out. I ordered online to pick up an hour prior to when the time was. By the time we went to pick it up, the people who ordered in person were getting their food first. Food: 3.5-4/5 Tough for me to rate because I got the HOT tenders (2nd hottest spice level) and was disappointed. Disclaimer, if you do not consistently eat spice then you may think this is spicy. The fries were "seasoned" but not all of them. The Garlic twister was very good though. If you eat it with the crimson sauce it's amazing. Providing an updated review after a second visit. Returned on a Saturday a bit after noon. It was not nearly so busy as the wing before. The tables had been split and rearranged to allow more seating. It remained clean and an automated ordering station had been added. We ordered at the counter. Our two strip combos came out as ordered. My wife's was 'country' and suited her taste. Mine was mild. It honestly was probably a little spicy for most mild taste, but was okay for me. Neither had been dipped in the squad that both of ours were dripping with on our last visit. Both came out hot along with the fries. They have larger portions here and many variations of sides and combinations. They offer their chicken as strips, inside a brioche bun, on top of a slice of toast, or in a burrito! So many ways to mix and match. Even the pickles they use are fresh crispy! The macaroni and cheese was a bowl of awesome cheeseyness that reminded me of everyone's favorite Shells and Cheese but even more cheesey. As far as the food...their fries was the only thing mediocre and ordinary for me. Maybe because they didn't cook them all the way crispy. These fries remind me of the Red Robin bottomless fries with their signature red powder salt. Same thing to me. One other subtraction was the time from order taken to pickup. We waited a little over 25 minutes for a family of three with just 3 ordinary combos. There has to be a way to speed up the process. Literally had my Nepalese friend leaking tears. Biscuits were buttery, but the chicken was peak. Haven't tried the other sides, but I'm betting they suffice. First time ordering and did online. It was 30 minutes after hitting enter. When I got there, there was an angry vibe. While I waited at the pickup line I asked the women ahead of me and she was upset and she said that it took 30 minutes when you ordered in store. It looked like the 20 or so people in there were waiting for their food. My order was okay. Two tenders orders and a sandwich, fried pickles, and Joey fries. When I got home they did not add the scoop of fries to two orders. Those were $3.75 a scoop each. Overall nothing impressive. The Joey fries are loaded fries with cheese, some chicken and a little cole slaw. Was enough for the three of us since they left off the scoop of fries. They weren't bad.
