I had heard about the Crimson Coward when it first came to town. It seems like a very well-established name, with decent food offerings. It sits right across the street from one of my top 5 favorite fried chicken shops, Nash & Smashed. They have some decent competition - That's what I thought before I stopped in. I am very thankful to the Crimson Coward chain for offering a $5 discounted meal for first-time visitors! I ordered the 4 piece tenders, in country style (no heat). My body seems to be that of a crybaby when it comes to handling spice. I ordered the food just after they opened, at 11:06, thru their online storefront (website). I arrived to pick up the food at around 11:20. They were just packaging it up to go out the door, and I was the only one in the restaurant. I'm sure if there was a line or quite a few more orders it would have taken longer. The food was packed in a small folding box (just like KFC style), but contained no napkins - so be sure to grab those before you go! The chicken was moist, tender, and juicy! The breading was thin, yet slightly crunchy. It seems that they make this perfectly! My compliments to the crew. It was done very well. The tenders were as big as my hands, and just as thick! They were quite large! I'm not sure I've ever seen tenders quite so big, that weren't 50+% breading alone. But no - these were genuinely large - They must have been the beast of a chicken yard. Tender. Juicy. Perfection. You get 4 slices of pickle with the meal, and for a pickle-lover like me that was great! They're not terrible high-class tasting, like a Claussen-brand pickle, and have a hint of bread-n-butter taste to them, but they're decent! But, the reason for the score being as it is, is because the flavor profile didn't fit to the fireworks sparkle that hit the chicken towards a home run. The seasoning landed a bit short, and flat. I was expecting a myriad of blended herbs and spices to match the exquisite look and tenderness of the chicken - but it never came. I couldn't tell you what herb or spice it was that felt so strongly, but there was one element in the spice package that dominated everything else, and just fills the nose and mouth with that one flavor over all else. It's not a bad taste by any means. It was quite enjoyable as-is, but it's nothing overtly special to write back home about. I wouldn't travel from far just to get this chicken. One other thing that bothered me was that they seemed to offer mac & cheese with other things mixed in but yet not the mac & cheese by itself on the side. Yet, you can get slaw, onions, pickles, and all these other condiments and flavors by themselves - just not mac & cheese alone. Sad! A terribly missed profit-maker for sure... If there's one thing people want with good fried chicken it's mac & cheese! I believe that's written in soul food lore somewhere... Lastly, the sauces that came with the food -- You can pick your own, and by default I went with the Crimson Sauce, and ranch. The ranch fell a bit flat. It's not an expensive or savory ranch; it's just a bottom of the barrel 2D ranch. No eccentric savory flavors, or myriad of tastes. There was clearly no buttermilk in it either, it just felt a bit sad. That's not to say it wasn't good, but it left me longing for a bit more. The Crimson sauce was good. It had a tiny bit of heat -- similar to something like your average green peppers, or mildly spicy fresh-made salsa would give off. Something your old-school no-spice white granny could order and eat with no complaining. The sauce was good and flavorful. Between the 4 tenders, 1 cup of ranch, and 1 cup of crimson sauce, I finished my meal just as the sauce cups were being wiped empty with the last bit of chicken meat. A refreshing and enjoyable experience, but nothing to drive out of your way for. I enjoyed the meal, and would come back - but I wouldn't go craving it once a week for the rest of my life. Good for a passing meal when you're sick of eating the same ol' Taco Bell, KFC, Chipotle, or McDonald's meals, and want to change it up a bit. read more

Overall this was decent. I would not say it was memorable. I feel the "hot" chicken restaurants are popping up every where and this one just blends in with the rest. There wasn't anything that I ate where I feel I would crave it. You order at a counter and they call your number when it is ready Super casual. Would I come back? Sure. I had nothing really to complain about. I had the mild chicken tenders. My daughter got a spicer sandwich and she was pleased. Fries are good. There was a sauce that came with it that was good. Limited Pepsi products and a couple of juices in their fountain machine. They also had some basic flavored milkshakes. Lots of tables for 2 people and only 1 table that sits four. I was initially supposed to meet a lender at the coffee shop next door but I was hungry and he suggested we come here. I'm glad he did because I was hungry and I don't drink coffee. I will have to step it up a notch next time, I didn't want a volcano eruption in my tummy that day. Fried pickle was meh, it is too thin. You can barely taste the pickle, all u taste is fried batter. I ordered medium level spice and it was a perfect heat level per my taste. The very weak husband ordered his "country" which means no heat. He was also happy. Went for the first time tonight. I had the half coward wings (mild), Crimson chicken sandwich (medium), fried pickles, and Crimson Onion. I liked the Crimson Onion, but those wings were delicious! Food was very good! We got the sandwiches and the loaded fries and they were both very good. A little bit on the salty side, but very delicious regardless. The people serving the food were also very kind and accommodating. The reason I docked a star is due to the speed in which the food comes out. I ordered online to pick up an hour prior to when the time was. By the time we went to pick it up, the people who ordered in person were getting their food first. I understand priority or walk in customers, but we ordered online to hopefully avoid the obscene wait time. Our food from time of order to it being read was about an hour and 15 minutes. This spot just opened in Woodbridge and there was a lot of hype surrounding it. The grand opening day, they ran out of chicken several hours before closing! Ambiance: 4/5 - Some seating available and I like the glass that allows you to see what the staff are doing with the food. Very transparent process. Price: 4.5/5 - The tender combo is about $14 and comes with solid portions. Knocking down points because extra crimson sauce is $.75. Food: 3.5-4/5 Tough for me to rate because I got the HOT tenders (2nd hottest spice level) and was disappointed. Disclaimer, if you do not consistently eat spice then you may think this is spicy. The fries were "seasoned" but not all of them. The Garlic twister was very good though. If you eat it with the crimson sauce it's amazing. Providing an updated review after a second visit. Returned on a Saturday a bit after noon. It was not nearly so busy as the wing before. The tables had been split and rearranged to allow more seating. It remained clean and an automated ordering station had been added. We ordered at the counter. Our two strip combos came out as ordered. My wife's was 'country' and suited her taste. Mine was mild. It honestly was probably a little spicy for most mild taste, but was okay for me. Neither had been dipped in the squad that both of ours were dripping with on our last visit. Both came out hot along with the fries. I think/hope they have the problems worked out after a few weeks of serving. It was quite tasty, so we will likely be back. read more

Not sure what is with all good reviews my first visit was little disappointing. Fries served some fries were crispy some were Soggy not sure why. Chicken burger and Fried chicken was soaking in oil not sure why. Also Fried onion was half cooked bottom of onion was not cook properly. Thought this would be a similar experience to the Hangry Joe's on Liberia. But no, the chicken here is much better. The chicken is just plain crispier and more flavorful. You get the real crunchiness of the batter surrounding a steamy...juicy flavorful explosion of chicken in the middle that's done just right. They have larger portions here and many variations of sides and combinations. They offer their chicken as strips, inside a brioche bun, on top of a slice of toast, or in a burrito! So many ways to mix and match. Even the pickles they use are fresh crispy! The macaroni and cheese was a bowl of awesome cheeseyness that reminded me of everyone's favorite Shells and Cheese but even more cheesey. As far as the food...their fries was the only thing mediocre and ordinary for me. Maybe because they didn't cook them all the way crispy. These fries remind me of the Red Robin bottomless fries with their signature red powder salt. Same thing to me. One other subtraction was the time from order taken to pickup. We waited a little over 25 minutes for a family of three with just 3 ordinary combos. There has to be a way to speed up the process. I ordered the 3 tenders with bread option & an onion blossom. The flavor level I chose was medium but it was mild to my palate. The homemade ranch sauce & crimson sauce were pretty good. There's a wait so if you order in person or online prepare to wait a while. It's still new and highly popular plus this is not fast food per se. Best chicken I've ever had, hands down. And yea, I've been around the chicken game. I pulled a piece off to give to a friend, and the juice literally slapped me in the face. I wouldn't recommend getting their "burn baby burn" heat setting (which costs $1 extra, rightfully so) unless you want to never taste again. Was worse than the One Chip Challenge. Literally had my Nepalese friend leaking tears. Biscuits were buttery, but the chicken was peak. Haven't tried the other sides, but I'm betting they suffice. You could tell it's all fresh and never frozen just by the wait time, which is no issue. Fast food is lame food, this is the real deal. The med heat isn't bad at all. Mild will have you sweat a bit and the hot i did not try yet. That will be next time if there is one. My only real complaint is a bit over priced. First time ordering and did online. It was 30 minutes after hitting enter. When I got there, there was an angry vibe. While I waited at the pickup line I asked the women ahead of me and she was upset and she said that it took 30 minutes when you ordered in store. It looked like the 20 or so people in there were waiting for their food. My order was okay. Two tenders orders and a sandwich, fried pickles, and Joey fries. When I got home they did not add the scoop of fries to two orders. Those were $3.75 a scoop each. Overall nothing impressive. The Joey fries are loaded fries with cheese, some chicken and a little cole slaw. Was enough for the three of us since they left off the scoop of fries. They weren't bad. But I just don't get the current fad of hot chicken whether it is Nashville or Korean. It's spicy chicken. Would probably only go back if someone else wanted it. read more
