Great bar, friendly owner, super nice staff, extremely outgoing regulars. Don't be intimidated when anybody and everybody comes over and wants to hear your life story. Everybody here is so friendly; the atmosphere is really unlike anything you get in the city nowadays. Drinks are ridiculously cheap, like inflation never happened since 1980. The jukebox is great, mostly because the crowd has such an eclectic taste in music ranging from Irish trad to 90s grunge to electronica. There are people here 7 nights a week, even on Monday and Tuesday. Finally a place in Southie open till 2am for us industry folk to hit last call! And pool is free - just don't forget to sign up. I can't recommend this bar highly enough. Get out of your comfort zone and check out the place with the green awning and fluorescent glow. read more

Some excellent pool players shoot here on the two free pool tables. There is league pool many nights but not Fri. or Sat.. The beer and drinks are not pricey. It's populated by many regulars and well run by the owner and staff. About a dozen seats at the bar, spacious with bright lighting but definitely divey. read more

Traveling to visit friends and having a night on the town...my wife and I enjoy finding local dives to fully experience the neighborhood and city culture. -1.50 Beers, Free Pool, Free Popcorn, No sign. My friend had been trying to get me to go to whiteys for months and becuase it was his birthday last weekened i finally decided to give it a shot. We walk in and my friend immediatly introduces me to the bartender/owner danny who was very friendly. At first i didnt know what to do, i wanted to take advantage of the three, free pool tables but i knew the regulars would make quick work of me, but after having a few 1.50 beers i loosened up and gave it a shot...only to be destroyed immediatly. Oh well. The place filled up pretty well, more people than i figured and also younger than a figured. a lot of people there were in their earilier 20's, but that may have been becuase a lot of people were there to see my buddy for his bday. the cheap beer led to all the patrons getting fairly saucy, which led to a good fun time at the bar. Everyone at whiteys treats it like their own home and there dont seem to be any 'rules' - its like its 'everyones' bar your know? My buddy who i went with ended up having to be carried out of the bar before 11, even though he should have been tossed over an hour before. alought i admit i was very skeptical...especially after i was told the oringinal owner got shot while tending bar there,. but once i walked in, had a few drinks, and lost my reservations i had a great time at whiteys...now i just need to find out how i can get one of those gigantic patriots mugs the regulars had... read more

One of the best dive bars I've been to in Boston. It's a good mix of locals and newer Southie residents. The drink prices can't be beat, with PBR's for $1.50, Guinness for $4 and shots/ mixed drinks for $5-6. Great place to drink and have fun for under 30 bucks. read more

yeah i was in new hampshire visiting my friend and we wanted to go down to the nearest big city so we went to boston plus i wanted to meet my sister who i never met before so it was a perfect trip. so we take the bus down there get to boston and i wanna go to south boston and drink at a authentic irish pub so i get directions to south boston take the train get off at a broadway st and head down west broadway till i see a place that calls to me and whiteys is where i ended up. so we walk in and i love it its old it smells and the chicks look like the can fight real good the locals got a hard attitude its my kind of place i order a guiness for the both of us and its only six bucks for two guiness i love it the guiness was strong and tasted fucking great and only at three dollars a pint. i was amazed and that was not even happy hour prices that was normal prices we talked with a irsh guy named bobby and being irish myself i felt at home it was a great place to be i plan to go back next summer thats the place to be. read more

My wife and I came to this place about 2 weeks ago and boy were we disappointed. Not only is the place filthy, but the atmosphere is also horrendous. There was a bartender named Bob who was rude and used vulgar language, also tried to hand my wife his phone number while I was in the bathroom. Having recently relocated to Southie with my girlfriend, I feel extraordinarily lucky to have found this unassuming gem of a bar, which is saturated with character, characters, history, distinct atmosphere, and a striking amount of heart. Yes, the drinks are pleasantly inexpensive, but what really makes this dive shine is its refreshingly genuine, warm, unapologetically gritty, come-as-you-are attitude, as well as its absolute lack of pretension. Many of the salty regulars are proud, fascinating folks who take obvious pleasure in sharing their candid, captivating, intermittently tragic stories over numerous pints of frigid beer, served up by the competent, brooding and sincere bar man, Gerry, or the jovial, joke-cracking, keen and commanding owner, Danny. I fear that the inevitable gentrification of South Boston (of which I am, begrudgingly, a part) has depleted the area of much of its extremely colorful past, but it's quite clear that this bar is, among other things, a tangible and poignant reminder of that past - flaws and all. That said, I've spent a considerable amount of my adult life prowling (more like stumbling) through countless watering holes, and I can honestly say that Whitey's Pub is at the very top of my list; there's just something so human about it. read more

If you are afraid of people with big hearts and filled with Guinness, then go to a cooler place downtown. And the pool tables are too crooked for you professionals. I moved to boston from worc two years ago with two friends and were on the lookout for a bar could call home. for my friends, its whiteys. i was skeptical before i went for the first time, a dive bar? in southy? called WHITEYS? well, let me just say that the moment us three walked in, we all looked at eachother simultaneously, and with out saying a word, basically we said "this is it". the people are great, and the crowd is the best mix ever. people from 21 to 60, avg age is probably 25. i've made a few close friends, and many good friends out of there. everyone is nice and very welcoming. free pool, free movie-style popcorn, 1.50 drafts, VERY strong drinks, $3 guiness, and monumental shots. the owner danny, (ethnic irishman) is always there and hes a true gentleman, hes nonjudgemental and has nothing to say but kind words and funny jokes. he knows my friends and i by name and always has a smile when we show up. he'll stop by a few times throughout the night to tell a story, then leave. whitey's is great because its a judgement free zone, with a constant flux of people of all types and styles. most importantly, danny has this amazing intuition about him that allows him to sniff out trouble before it happens, thus you dont have to worry about fights, drugs, thugs, assholes or any other problems, you just show up, get as drunk as you want, dance as much as you want, and socialize as much as you want with no worries at all like in other dive bars around boston. and its not only danny, people watch out for eachother at whiteys, and you don't have to be a regular to benefit from such courtesy. a close friend was nervous the first time i brought her and her gf's down there, she likes the fanuel style bars with $8 beers and guys wearing skin-tight armani t-shirts. at first she was skeptical (because it didn't LOOK like the bars she frequents) but by the end of the night, she was confessing her love for whiteys, and even showed up the following sunday with all of her gfs. now shes a regular. honestly this bar is the best bar in southie. whitey's is perfect if A) you're looking to spend a whole night at whiteys to enjoy cheap drinks, good people, music and lively atmosphere B) if you want to pregame while doing something different and unique before you head off to the playwright, boston beer garden, or downtown C) if you want to have a perfect night cap when the other southie bars close at 1am(whiteys closes at 2) D) you want to watch the game and order delivery someplace other than your moms couch...and E) YOU FILL IN THE BLANK, cuz Whiteys is the shiznit and there are a million reasons to come here. read more

Laidback neighborhood bar. Same old people come in all the time. Evident by the fact they all know each others names, and that of the bartenders. A couple of pool tables, wicked cheap brews, and good people. I give it 5 stars becuase of the affordability, and the down to earth friendliness of the poeple i met there. Nothing like any of the other spots on west or east broadway so if you're looking for somethign posh this place won't suit you. Nevertheless, great time. read more

I've come here three times with three completely different (but equally unlikely) groups of people, and all I can tell you is that THIS PLACE IS EPIC. I'm the kind of girl who favors a night of weirdness over a night of boredom, and at Croke Park, I felt nervous, maybe a little unwelcome, and inexplicably safe and at home all at the same time. Definitely NOT boring. Free pool, cheap GENEROUS drinks, writing on the walls from the ceiling to the floor--more Southie character than a visitor (or local Yuppie) could ever ask for. My favorite part is probably the modern jukebox, which was playing 50s & 60s hits at midnight on Saturday, made complete by an enthusiastic dancing regular. OK so I'm gonna start out by saying I had a hell of a time in South Boston. I'm originally from Buffalo, NY--home of the alcoholics where we don't close the bars 'til 4am and even then we go for an afterparty--and I think I met my match partying with the natives in Southey. I stayed there for four days and when I woke up I started drinking; this is where my love affair with Whitey's began. The bartenders are amazing--Danny greets you with a warm smile like you're one of the family, and the two others, well, I never got their names but one proposed marriage to me and gave me probably 20 hugs. The drinks are scary cheap--1.50 for a pint of bud and my Bombay sapphires were 4 bucks. I am planning on taking a couple of my ladies down there Saturday night; i need them to witness the chaos, and i can only hope they are prepared. The locals are fun, and will talk to you whether you like it or not. (you will like it, trust me) Most locals are right from Ireland, and will buy you round after round all night. The atmosphere gets better the drunker you get, and I laughed harder there than I have in years. I cannot wait to go back there and see everyone again. At least I won't be wearing the same dress for three days------hehehehe....... read more
