Came here to meet friends. We had already eaten, especially because we thought that as an ale house the food would not be of high quality nor would it be gluten free. We were surprised to find that the place was actually very nice, had good service, and had gluten-free food. To be sure this is still primarily American pub food. Chicken wings, Nachos, flat breads sand burgers. But they also had a nice selection of salads and a limited but nice option of large plates. We had a great time with our friends and tried the Nachos and Guacamole appetizers. They were very good. Next time I am in the area, I will stop by to meet up with friends here again. read more

Let's call this a positive two star review. I mean I'd probably go 2.5 if Yelp allowed it (get on that already!). You see, nothing horrible happened at Crompton Ale House to warrant the low score, but then again, nothing happened to warrant anything higher. An unfortunate feeling to have after my friend's B-Day dinner. Let's get into it. Well, I suppose there are a few small positives that took place. Though, the only true thumbs up I can safely muster would be the ambiance (and maybe the sweet potato fries). Besides Crompton being a run of the mill restaurant/bar of Manhattan, I did enjoy the wall of old books, cogs, and vintage steering wheels making it feel like we were dining in some fantastical library. But from my writings, the aesthetics usually mean the least in respect to the review. What matters most should be food and service, though these were both significantly forgettable. When I first got there, my attempts to grab a drink from the bar were rather difficult, especially when the total count of bartenders was basically one (or none). It at least gave me an opportunity to peruse the beer menu which (I don't want to sound beer snobbish, but probably will) wasn't anything special. They did have their own Crompton Ale and a Crompton Special Brew so I put that in my back pocket as a choice, but before deciding, I noticed a spot on the menu that said "Ask your server about our rotating beers." I figured this might result in a unique selection or something more locally craft. Instead, once finally grabbing the bartender, it led to a confused glance/statement when I asked. I reworded my question not using "rotating" (which seemed to be what threw him for a loop) and was then told that Crompton Special Brew (a lager) was what they had...okay. So a misleading menu statement and a less than stellar staff member started things off on the wrong foot. What did I drink? That Crompton Ale which was honestly meh (a great word to describe it). Stated as a red ale it had no malty flavor and didn't rouse my palette in any way. Even if he accidentally had given me the lager, it was still a boring brew that could easily have been mistaken for a Budweiser. My second round was a safer bet via Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, an actual solid beer available on tap. Beyond the suds, the food didn't do much for my liking. The menu seemed promising from app and sandwich choices, though I chose their 26th St. Burger (which consisted of a Pat La Frieda blend patty topped with swiss cheese, mushrooms, onion confit and barbeque sauce) for my dinner. It sounded better than it tasted. I mean, you can throw around the La Frieda name, but when the meat has a few hard, possibly bony, pieces in it, I question the quality. The shrooms, onions, and Swiss assisted in creating some resemblance of enjoyment, but halfway through the burger I was basically eating it more out of hunger than for flavor. The only taste I had was a bad one left in my mouth by the end of this whole dining session. Overall, I guess this Crompton Ale House review isn't so positively-based (whoops). Starting things off on a negative note at the bar led to more of the same once we sat (might I add our waitress seemed like her working here was a punishment). Maybe their actual cocktails and appetizers and other food factors are better, but from this experience, I just don't see a need to return to figure that out. I'll take my money elsewhere in the city with better results from start to finish. I'm positive about that. read more

I think they were short handed, but once a large party came in & sat in the back we never saw our waiter again. I had to waive down a manager to get our check. lovely service. me and my wife were on vacations in NYC, we were looking for a place to eat near our hotel in chelsea area. We came to this nice restaurant on sunday, it was a bit crowded due to the football games, our waitress was very attentive and friendly, she took the time to be able to bring us everything we needed, she recommended fish and chips and the steak with sweet potatoes fries which were so delicious, for apps we got nachos and calamari. No wait due to two of us. No parking except street, if can find it. It was close to our hotel and the hotel gave 20% off coupon. Waiter and waitress were friendly. Food came fast and we enjoyed. It was loud but baseball is on along with other games so can't complain. Everything was clean and drinks were good. Order wings and they were good. I liked that they were crispy. Fries were good. Came here on a whim with some coworkers after work. I was pleasantly surprised with this bar as it was really clean, modern, and cozy. It wasn't one of those dodgy, grimey bars where everything is sticky and you don't wanna touch anything lol. I also loooved and appreciated the music they had playing, lots of top40 and the newest EDM. Had the frozé and it was delicious! I loved that it was kind of sour like a lemonade and not overly sweet. Would definitely come back just for it! The only thing that was slightly annoying was that we first started at the bar and then moved to the tables and they made us close out our tab and pay for our drinks under two receipts. A bit weird and out of the way but not the biggest deal. It just would've been easier if they could put it all under one tab/receipt. We chose this spot because it's next to our favorite karaoke spot Sid Golds Request Room. We came in for a quick bite and beer but ended up staying longer than we planned. whelmed ------------ I I was underwhelmed. Maybe it's because they are new but everything was just a notch below mediocre in my book. First off, let me say that the place is gorgeous! I love the design...all the books and gears and vaguely steampunky things are very cool. It has a nice layout and I like having the sinks outside the bathroom. Whoever designed it did a phenomenal job! Also, service was friendly and somewhat efficient. It wasn't crowded on the Wednesday night we went so I was happy with our server. The first thing that put me off is that I ordered the Schofferhofer Grapefruit and it said $8. Okay, that's a little high, esp with no happy hour, but I know at least three places I can go in Manhattan and get 16 ounces of for $8 so I was willing to pony up for a refreshing beer on a hot day. However, when I got the beer, it was in a .3 liter glass. It was filled up over the .3l line so maybe, if I'm being generous, there were almost 12 oz in the glass. They should really print the size of the pours on the menu so you can tell beforehand if you're getting ripped off and I felt that way in this case. The Bronx Pale Ale I got for $7 was a pint, so that was fine. The beer menu is okay but nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered some food. Started with the deviled eggs. The menu described them as if they might have a little kick to them, but they were just bland and a bit soggy. Not awful, just immediately forgettable. Then we ordered meals...a burger (medium), fish and chips and mac & cheese. My friend who had the fish and chips didn't even finish them. They were overly greasy and made him feel sick as he ate them. My burger came out well done and thus was very dry. There was no distinctive flavor that would make me say "oh, this is a good burger". It tasted like something my sister would make. The tomato on the burger was very good and I did like the fries. My other friend's mac & cheese was good, so that was the highlight of the meal. I was torn between a 3 and a 2 rating but I couldn't justify saying it was A-OK because it really wasn't. They need to step up the game if they want to be competitive in this neighborhood. I walked by Flatiron Hall and Ainsworth on my way there and they were packed. This place was half empty. Another Irish bar added to the area. Crompton Ale is very well positioned to take over the bar scene since its not in the same strip of street that tall other ones are. No longer we have to content with the same crowd over and over. This new Joint so far has delivered a nice ambiance, vibe that attracts you. Dark /dimmed lighting, great beer selection and great whiskey alternatives are plenty. Drink specials $14 each are in par with surrounding bars. Lunch prices are high for a wrap $12 but its to e expected due to the other higher end restaurants in the area. So far during lunch it sits empty so its a great time to bring your office mates for a large gathering. Its new so no biggie. read more

The Crompton Ale House is right across the street from the Hilton Fashion District Hotel where I was staying, so I popped in one evening for dinner and a Pint. Ordered the Shepherd's Pie and a pint of the Bronx APA (6.3% ABV) from The Bronx Brewery, Bronx, NY. The Shepherd's Pie came out really fast - makes me think they have a bunch of them hanging out in the oven. It was filling and hit the spot as I was really hungry, but it was rather ordinary and average as Shepherd's Pie's go. I added some black pepper and hot sauce to spice it up a bit. I ranked Bronx APA 2.75 stars on Untappd. A decent Pale Ale, but nothing to make it stand out. The service at the bar, however, was very good. The sliders were not so great, the quesadillas were filling and the selection of beers delightful. The fries were a little overdone. Happy hour specials are very limited. A friend of ours picked the Crompton Ale House for our New Year's Eve dinner. Upon arriving, I had high hopes. The space is lovely. Dark wood, cool atmosphere, big nice long bar. Very pretty. I especially loved the one wall lined with old books. It made this former English major feel right at home. I think I even spotted some titles I've read at some point in my life. And here is where I have to offer a split review. The food was very good. The service was not. Food: My husband ordered a salad and the mac and cheese. I ordered the sliders. Our friends ordered a steak frites and another salad. All food was excellent. I appreciated that our waitress asked me how I wanted my sliders cooked, and they came out perfectly cooked medium as I had requested. My husband's mac and cheese was everything you want in a mac and cheese. And the couple of fries we snagged from my friend's plate were deliciously perfect. We also ordered the apple crumble dessert, which was a bit heavy on the sugar, even for sweet tooth me, but still very nice and tasty. Beer-wise, the menu offered decent options. We all found something to make us happy without too much difficulty. But we did think that the variety was a bit on the light side for a place that calls itself an Ale House. Maybe we are just spoiled when it comes to beer places. Service: Well I think our waitress tried. But the service was pretty poor. It took a long time between visits to the table. She did not know enough about the beer selection (especially for a beer loving crew like us). She had trouble remembering the couple of beers on for happy hour, and once she served us a beer we had not ordered... my friend had been discussing two beers with her and ordered one, but she brought the other mistakenly. And I noted that she did not try to upsell us very hard. I am quite sure we would have had at least another round of beers if she had been more prompt about circling back with us and delivering the beers we ordered. We were confused since it was not very crowded at the time, so it wasn't that she was overwhelmed. Maybe she was new or having an off night. I don't know. But we'll call it lackluster at best. I had to meet my friends in this neighborhood and looked into the windows of a few restaurants on the block. Crompton Ale House lured me in with their happy hour sandwich sign! I was quite surprised to find a beautifully decorated and comfortable vibe inside. The staff was friendly and accommodating when I asked the bartender to lower the volume since the volume of the football games was almost deafening. And there wasn't that much of football crowd there. We proceeded to a table to seat the 5 of us. I had 3 appetizers for $33. The Brussel sprouts with bacon were amazingly good, the wings were big and tasty! I wish they had degrees of hotness or more sauces to choose from besides buffalo and bbq. Yes it looks great, but they advertise an everyday happy hour and didn't charge the happy hour prices. Our bills were 4x what they should have been. We even asked about the happy hour and they told us they were doing it, we got tequila soda and vodka waters and those didn't count as "mixed drinks". This is a great place to catch a game after work with friends. The crowd seemed more mature as well - no loud, college kids here. I've been here a few times for Happy Hour and a couple of times for lunch, as its right down the block for my job and super convenient. Both times I had the cobb salad, which was fine--nothing to write home about, just your average chicken cobb salad! It starts getting a bit more crowded around 1pm, but never crazy. I would rather limit my time here to happy hour which is a nice full crowd, bartenders are great (most w/ an Irish accent which is a great touch) and prices are decent. read more

It was budget friendly and sooo good!! The steak quesadillas, sliders, and chips with guacamole were incredible! The staff was attentive and friendly.
