Great food with average service. I think it has gone down a bit. I used to frequent here much more often when I lived a block away. The chicken, skirt steak, fries (in a lemony dressing) and egg lemon soup are fantastic, but not quite as good as they used to be, except for the fries which are still the best anywhere in Chicago. We actually went here the day after my wedding with family and friends equaling about 20 people and occupied the entire front half of the restaurant. We had the highest ever bill there and even with that many people, I think it totaled about $230. read more

Great Gyros and coffee! What else can you ask for? My Gyro sandwich was so big, I was left wondering how big the next size up was! It has that great Greek diner feel. These guys are great. Some of the best fries around (and "healthiest," if it's possible for fries to be healthy). If you're getting fries to go, wait until you get there to place that part of your order -- they will be even fresher. I'm shocked to see the bad service reviews. I would say we got some of the friendliest service we have had in a long while. We were in a rush so only got the chicken pita to split but it was very good and came out quickly. There is a lot of lemon but we happen to like that so it wasn't an issue. I've been coming here since I was four years old and it's still a favorite. The salads are great, as are their pita sandwiches (veg. and cheese pita). Still, it's probably similar to any cheap Greek place, if it weren't for the fact that they have the most amazing fries. Add tzatziki to that and it's heaven. The onw thing that sucks is that they only take cash.. it's cheap so it's not too big of a problem, but for those of us who prefer paying with a debit/credit card and hate carrying around cash, it can get annoying. read more

I've eaten here once a month for my whole life. It really is the best greek food you will ever find at this price! Hands down and believe me I've looked. The gyros are great (and huge), The egg lemon soup is not to be missed, and the fries are so good I bring an extra order home every time I go. (True to my chicago roots, haha). But if your still not convinced I will tell you the trade secret. Go with one of your hungry, large chicago style friends. Order a king size Gyro $5.95 (yeah I have the prices memorized) and order an extra pita (.75) Large fry 3.95 and if you made the order for pick up you just ordered way too much food for two people for about $10. read more

Love, love, love this neighborhood, very casual, place. My husband and I were regulars when Jeff first opened because we lived in the neighborhood. Through the years we moved around, even to the SF bay area for 10 years, but we always made our way back to this great little find for the chicken with red sauce, Greek fries, lemon soup and pita! We've never found anything like it and now that we're back from California and living in the area again we can be true regulars. Although Jeff never considered us anything but regulars! Cross-Rhodes continues to be the best restaurant in the Main St corridor. It's the friendly neighborhood spot that always hits the spot. There are occasions my wife and I will dine-in, but we prefer to take-away so we can pig out in our pajamas at home (don't judge). The portions are ridiculously generous here, it's Grandma-saying-you-don't-eat-enough huge. I'm not sure if they've gotten bigger over the years or if my stomach has shrunk, but the gyros dinner is now ample for two meals. All the standards are still great, but when I am feeling carnivorous, I go for the charburger. You may ask, "Why would I order a burger at a Greek diner?" and the answer is quite simply, "It's one of the best damn burgers you can get." Seriously, don't sleep on the charburger. read more

We order from here about once a month. The chicken is good, but our standard order is the skirt steak. With the salad (or soup) and Greek fries, it's enough for two solid meals. Love those Greek fries! But ask for extra marinade on them. Without it they can be a little dry. Only complaint is that they're cash only. read more

A great place for Greek food, you can tell it's really authentic when the patrons look like they just got here from the old country themselves. We were here for lunch and tried their country style pitas, mine was with pork. Very delicious. The meat was perfectly grilled and very smokey, like it just came off the back yard grill. The yoghurt and feta cheese sauce was really good. The pita itself really fresh and pillow soft. The pita wasn't that big, but about right for the price. We also had the fries, these are the best part - they are huge steak fries, golden and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, they come seasoned with a white wine vinegar sauce and you can get them with feta cheese. One order was enough for two people, especially since the pork pita has a few fries in it. Only down sides - they take cash only and open at 11:30. Bottom line - this is better than any fast food and many of the places in Greek town. The food is awesome, service is great, prices are good, they serve beer and wine. No wonder there are no McDonaldses in that area, these guys would run them out of business quicker than you can say "Op-Pa!" read more

I eat here as often as I can afford. I love, love, LOVE the red sauce and the lemon soup is fantastic. I wish the bowl for takeout was bigger for the price, but I'll keep getting it because its delicious. The fries are great, the chicken is awesome, and I've always found they gave me plenty of food for my dollars. The only reason why I hesistate giving this place 5 stars is the seating arrangements and appearance on the outside. Ill be leaving Evanston soon and I will miss this place for sure. Cross Rhodes isn't fancy like its nearby neighbor Oceanique. Its a nice cozy affordable place when you can get some wonderful food. The things they do with vinegar and seasoning is fabulous especially when it comes to the Skirtsteak and the Greek-style chicken. After the meal, you will be feeling full and hearty. I perhaps wouldn't suggest ordering the Gyros...unless you want to finish the numerous strips of lamb (so much). Their other stuff (Spinakopita, soups) is okay not good. This place is really laid back and unpretentious, which I appreciate. The food is awesome too. And cheap. Always a good combo. I had the combination pork and chick souvlaki dinner with the Greek fries. Both the pork and chicken were delicious, really flavorful and juicy. The fries were tasty, the tartness was a little intense after a while, but I dug it. I'd totally eat here again if I was in Evanston, the foods great and the prices are low. I love crossrhodes, it's uber cheap. I always order the gyro sandwich and the greek fries.. both wonderful... and the spanakopita is also delish. It's a pretty casual restaurant, nothing too fancy. The first time I went to Cross-Rhodes I didn't know what I was in for exactly. All I knew was that I wanted good Greek food at a reasonable price. Once I stepped in and was offered a sample of the fries (an offer made to make sure I wanted to stick with rice), I was sold. Once I tasted my meal (gyros sandwich), and my fiancee's (chicken kabob), I was in love. Awesome food and a friendly staff are always a great combination. I am yet to sit down to eat, but I have noticed that it is usually full of happy customers. My only warning is that it's cash-only, so hit the ATM around the corner before walking inside. read more

Burger is one of the city's best and big Greek salads with gyros good too, but you just have to try the Green chicken with fries. Comes with a pita and salad to start. This is a diner-like place that's fast, good and inexpensive. Two people with a bottle of wine and two entrees for like $30 bucks! Service is attentive and fast and the owner is usually at the cash register. Been a customer since 1995. Hands down the best gyros I've ever had. Always cooked to perfection, served on the best pita bread and whatever it is they use for their 'red sauce' (which is an option in place of the traditional tzatziki - or what they call 'white sauce') is mouth watering. For some reason we haven't been there in the last year or two and we went tonight and the food was even better than I remembered. I had the king size gyros and my wife had the pastitsio and the egg lemon soup. Also ordered a small greek fries. The king size gyros gives you such a ridiculous amount of gyro meat that you probably need to order an extra pita bread or two. I remember asking the late owner years ago how they keep their Greek fries crispy in the Greek dressing and he told me it's because they buy the most expensive fries. I believe it. Whenever in Evanston I absolutely have to go to Cross Rhodes. Everything I have had has been so good. Theres a sign on the counter that says they won some french fry competition. I am a french fry junky and I can see why they won! Those fries are great! Also, there is something amazing about their chicken. I order the grilled chicken on the greek salad and its addictive. Every time I go there, I am amazed that it is just as good as ever. They have the BEST MINESTRONE SOUP I've ever had. Their Skirt Steak is fantastic. The greek fries are the best fries ever. Their Greek Salad is unbelievable. The feta is fabulous and the pita is perfect. Greek Chicken, gyros, all amazing. Every single item is delicious, fresh and served with a smile. They refill your water with a small carafe that gets refilled constantly. You usually seat yourself, get fast friendly service, but be sure you bring cash (no credit cards). They even went above and beyond in helping my disabled mother in law get down the steps after dinner. This place is a gem. It's friendly, delicious, reasonable. It's my favorite place to go for a bite to eat in the area. Can't say enough positive about it! read more
