Great drop in experience here! Was able to get signed up and sign the waiver ahead of time. There was plenty of parking and the coach was ready for me when I showed up for class at 5:15 am. The facility itself is pretty large with 2 sides of indoor gym and 2 outdoor areas with rigs and equipment space. The programming was excellent and very traditional CrossFit, including a benchmark workout. The warmup was methodical and efficient. I felt welcomed as a guest and encouraged by the other athletes in the class. Coach was great, good technique and instruction along with great encouragement once the wod began. I would definitely suggest checking this spot out if you're in the area visiting or if you live here and are looking to take your fitness to the next level. read more

I dropped in for an introduction class and the staff couldn't be more helpful, friendly, and accommodating! Unlike a lot of boxes that give some basic intro workout, the coaches pushed us and really challenged our fitness threshold! My friend and I both appreciated the great instruction and the attention to detail, especially when it came to form and also motivation! This is one place I would love to be a part of! One great aspect is that the they incorporate Olympic Lifting instruction in the workouts. To me, Olympic Bar training is essential for overall, practical strength gains. In one 10 minute instructional session, I learned more than in 3 months of dissecting YouTube Olympic lift videos. Also, they provided much more personal attention to fundamental form and really tried to correct some bad habits. These guys care about you improving! I think their pricing plans are also very competitive and possibly better than most boxes considering the knowledgeable coaching and the heavy incorporation of Olympic Lift instruction. H-Town Crossfit: When you start out on a fitness journey you are usually nervous about many things. Will people judge me? Will I hurt myself? Am I capable of doing it? I am sure there are many more insecurities that come with working out but these were the main trepidations that I had when I started a program with H-town Crossfit. Signing up was a breeze. The people at the front desk always know what they are doing. Any time I had questions about anything they never needed to double check they just knew how to answer any question that came their way. It's very reassuring when the front desk doesn't act as if it's their first day. On to the workout: You get to schedule yourself into their very easy to use on a website called Wodify. It is your basic login username/password set up. You can choose to sign up for 2/3/unlimited classes a week and you are able to reserve your spot in a class 3 days in advance. When you need to cancel a morning class make sure you do it before 10pm the day before the actual class. For the night classes, make sure to cancel at least an hour before the class. Break this rule and you will suffer a $10 charge. This ensures people don't sign up for a class and not show up since there is a 12 person limitation for each class. I will try to tell you my experience as unbiased as I can. My first workout was intense, I mean, I have literally never worked out like this. If you don't know much about crossfit, the workouts are high intensity for shorter periods of time so it is perfect for people with a tight schedule. You start out with a warm up then you usually go into learning form while learning about the actual workout. My first day I saw stars and made sure I didn't throw up. Not saying this will be every new persons experience but it was mine. The next two classes I got better and by the third class I had my endurance up. Form: Crossfit has you lifting, throwing, tossing, ect.. You can really injure yourself if you don't go to a place that is experienced, highly trained, and dedicated to your safety. I was petrified that I would rupture a disk or blow out some sort of body part. But there are many steps this place takes to ensure safety. They focus on form constantly. This does make you feel singled out at first but as you start getting the form right and you feel safer about your movements you will realize that it was worth it. They also have free Saturday classes that teach you about movement and they help with form as well as confidence in your workout. Also if you aren't comfortable with any of the movements or you have concerns like knees, back, arms, ect there is always a scaled down movement to make that particular sensitivity safer. I HAVE BEEN THERE FOR A YEAR AND I HAVE YET TO SEE ANYONE GET HURT. There will be a rare case where you get a scrape or a bruise but nothing along the lines of seriously injuring yourself. Instructors: I never had a problem with any of the instructors. All of them are so welcoming, warm, nice, and friendly. Judgment seems to be insecurity for most people when it comes to working out and I never felt that from any of the employees. The extent of judgment I was ever exposed to was being late for a workout or missing a workout. That's it. Owner: Theo is the owner and if you can ever schedule a class with him I would highly recommend it. He is so passionate about his gym and makes sure everyone feels welcome. He does the workouts himself and his expertise in crossfit are extremely admirable. Overall this place more deserving of 5 stars than any place I have reviewed so far. The equipment is clean, the instructors are more than qualified, the people are very welcoming. I looked forward to each workout, dreaded it whenever I was doing it, but very proud of myself after I finished. This place made me stronger and more confident with my fitness goals. I'll admit, I was skeptical about CrossFit. Being a yoga instructor it concerned me that all the overhead weight lifting would give me lower back compression I spend hours un-doing during yoga. But after a few classes I have to say that I have never felt better than doing CrossFit, then going to my yoga practice. It turns out the two go hand in hand! The core strength I get makes standing postures a breeze and the weight work makes my back feel very strong, my back doesn't strain as often when I stand for long periods of time. But my favorite part is the people at this box. I've taught yoga at another box and teach a Yoga For Athletes class at YogaOne Studios so I see a fair share of CrossFit instructors/enthusiasts/athletes but the personalities of HTown instructors/members is really unique. The instructors are not there just to work. (FULL DISCLOSURE: My boyfriend is a HTown instructor) They are there because they are passionate about CrossFit and community. The members encourage each other and always share information, tips, talk about each others accoloades. At the Christmas party the owners gave out awards like "person most likely to show up with a hangover" "best coach" "most improved athlete" "best socks." Celebrating silly-my kinda people. The equipment is new, everything is organized, the office is super efficient. Suprise! The logo is so cool I actually want to wear their promo gear. Something that has been really unique about this box is the new paleo friendly prepared foods they are selling. These meals have saved me more than a few times from gorging myself on Mexican food. Don't worry, it was only a few times, I'm still gorging on Mexican food often. Overall, if its quality instructors, community and lookin' good you want in a box this is the place to be G! Having lost 15 lbs on my own I decided to change it up and look into Crossfit gyms. I interviewed several Crossfit "Boxes" before deciding that Crossfit HTown was the box for me. What sold me on choosing this box over the others was the fact that in the first FREE introductory class we were taught the philosophy and values behind this "box" and I was impressed that the instructor Seth, was Dr. in Physical Therapy. They really are a community and encourage good nutrition, training, and charitable causes in and outside the box. Classes are relatively small and trainers will really help and encourage you to use proper form over more weight which is different from some of the other boxes I have been to. Best thing is that each session is total body workout that burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time 30-45 minutes. I was only able to go to Crossfit HTown for approximately 5 weeks, 2-3 times a week and had to stop due to heavy work traveling schedule. However the functional bodybuilding and cardio exercises I learned in Crossfit HTown is something I'm able to take on the road when I hit up the gym. I started Crossfit in late July 2012 and within 3 months of incorporating what I learned along with a healthy diet I was able to lose and additional 15 lbs and drop several inches all over my body and decrease my body fat percentage. There seem to be two broad camps of people when it comes to CrossFit: those who love it with a quasi-religious fervor, and others who are concerned for the mental and physical well-being of their friends or loved ones who now have what appears to be an unhealthy infatuation with doing ridiculous, intense workouts for "fun." I tend to fall more under column A. For a long time I tried to resist drinking the (100% paleo!) Kool-Aid of the CrossFit cult, but I've since come to terms with the fact that I am now another committed acolyte bowing at the alter of the barbell. Terms like WOD, Snatch, PR and GHD are no longer foreign; and tall socks, Reebok/Lulu-everything, shirts that say "BACON," and ripped hand callouses don't seem strange anymore. CrossFit H-Town is a great facility with a skilled, knowledgeable, and engaging coaching staff. I trained there for four months when I was working downtown. The location was ideal (~10 minutes from my building's parking garage), and spending an hour or so at H-Town after work was far more productive than sitting with every other commuter in mind-numbing Houston traffic at the peak of rush hour. There's something deeply therapeutic about throwing every last drop of strength you have at a workout to cleanse your mind and body of a stressful workday. Wodify, the gym-management software they use at H-Town, makes scheduling workouts and tracking progress very easy. And as a bonus for all the Type A, overachieving young professionals drawn to CrossFit, the program allows you to compare your performance with that of your gym-mates, which stimulates that competitive drive to push yourself further than you otherwise may have gone. After moving to Houston and doing research on different CF's, it didn't take long to learn that H-Town is the best. A wait-list should tell you everything you need to know. People want to join this place because the members WANT to be there, the attitude is infectious and it results in awesome workouts. The staff is grade A, the community is embracing, and there is constantly great competition. I've had classes with ages ranging from college kids to grandmas, so it isn't hard to find someone to push you. If there is then leave it to a coach to get you going. I just wanted to send a huge thank you to you guys (and the whole box for that matter), a week ago I hit a huge milestone for me regarding my health, my doctor took me off one of my medications (for high blood pressure) - she initially said, about 5 years ago, that I'd be on this and the others for the rest of my life (all stemming from type 1 diabetes and ongoing preventative care in relation to). Prior to moving to Houston in September 2012, I had been doing CrossFit for two years. Having opportunities with travel, I've been to several boxes all over the country, and even a few internationally. Walking into CrossFit H-Town, I immediately knew this community was different and signed up after my first WOD. What separates CrossFit H-Town is the continued focus on the athlete experience. What can I say about Crossfit H-Town that hasn't already been said? The coaches, the environment, the community, its excellence is untouchable. I was the type of person who hated any type of exercise. I skipped gym most of my life. I would buy a "30-day challenge" that claimed heavy weight loss in a short time span, use it once, and put it away. When I was convinced by a friend to join a Crossfit gym, I was nervous I was going to get laughed out of the building. Who does this annoying, loud, potty mouthed, nervous weakling walking in think she is anyways?! I can happily say my worries were pointless. Every class I've been to is so positive and exciting. Every day brings a new challenge and an hour of fun for you and the other athletes. I pretty much always finish last, but no one ever gives me shit for it. Everyone is always cheering each other on, giving one another encouragement as you push through the WOD. It's a positive environment that stays with you outside of the box. It's not only made me feel different, but it's also changed my mindset about fitness. It's not just about a visual body change. It's mental too. H-Town changes you physically, mentally, and emotionally for the better. On top of that, the staff is A+. Robyn is usually the first friendly face you see, at least at the Arts District location. She'll chat you up and make you feel welcome right away. Each of the coaches bring something special to the table. I haven't worked with all of them yet, but the ones I have are incredible. Jordan is crazy helpful and isn't afraid to push you to greatness. Joe is so positive, he cheers you on all class long. The Elements coaches are kind to newbies like myself, treating everyone from the most experienced to the brand new like a person of value. Finally, the gyms themselves are fantastic. I haven't been to the Heights location yet, but I can say that the Arts District box is rad. The facilities are clean, open, and don't reek of B.O. despite the fact that you will 100% stink to the high heavens after completing a WOD. In short, Crossfit H-Town is killing the game constantly. H-Town has been here for a while now and they are always innovating in the fitness industry. I've attended two events here and have been very impressed both times with how well they are run. And as for the day to day gym operations, the systems they have in place are excellent. I have been doing Crossfit since 2010 and about half of that at H-Town. This place has changed my life in a very positive way and has become an integral part of my lifestyle. It truly is life-changing, but only if you allow it to be. The coaches at H-Town care for your well-being and performance. They walk around during class and call you out to correct your form, encourage you to push a little harder, and acknowledge you for a job well-done. It was intimidating at first, but you come to appreciate the feedback from the coaches who know their stuff. The classes are capped at 14, so you can rest assured that you are not left alone breaking your back due to lack of supervision. After trying out various boxes in town and out of town, I realized that H-Town has assembled the best team of coaches and great programming to kick your butt (and make them rock hard in the process). There are a lot of Crossfit gyms out there. I believe there are possibly over 100 in the greater Houston area. I haven't been to all the other ones in Houston, but I have been to several in California and the rest of the U.S. Crossfit H-Town has very legit reasons to be proud of its facility, membership, and coaching. Most crossfit gyms have the regular pull-up bars, roll up garage, and physical set up. And so does H-Town. The difference is, quite frankly, the community and the coaching. The quality of the community and coaching are set from the top. Theo has done a great job cultivating a very special place where people are friendly (even to visitors) and people are striving for and exhibiting good form in all movements, even if it means foregoing a few seconds or minutes. The classes are also geared to produce a supportive and safe environment with a max of 14 participants per class. There is also enough competition there if you want to rock it out! Perhaps the culture can be best summed up in the Facility Rules of which the first one is: "Leave your ego at the door. It's likely to get a smack down if you don't" If I lived in Houston, I would definitely work out daily at Crossfit H-Town. Because I live in California, I will definitely work out there when I visit. I have been a member at H-Town for a year now and wouldn't consider crossfit training anywhere else. I discovered H-Town through Yelp reviews and was struck by more than one review citing the sense of community they felt at this "box". I could not agree more with that feeling. The classes are capped at 14 people and you will bond with your classmates through generous amounts of shared sweat and exhaustion. On more than one occasion I have struggled to finish a WoD and through the encouragement of my fellow "Townies" was able to crank it out to the finish. The staff is very friendly and are all experienced instructors who will help you master all of the different exercises that make up a crossfit WoD. If you are brand new to crossfit (as I was) you will be very happy with the level of individual instruction you receive due to the capped class sizes. There's a different workout every day and after a year of training at H-Town I think I have only repeated one or two of the workouts. Take the plunge and schedule an appointment. Don't worry about some high pressure sales pitch at the end of your visit or introductory workout. The owners don't do business that way and it was the lack of a sales pitch at the end of my introductory workout that convinced me to become a member. The people in the club are welcoming and the ambiance is very good. I was the kind to barely be motivated to go to the gym but since I started I did not miss any class. I joined CrossFit H-TOWN 2 weeks ago and I can sincerely say that it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have always been active, usually bouncing between Lifetime and Equinox, but I have never pushed myself as hard as I have been pushing myself here. And I have never seen the results as dramatic as I have seen here. I look back at my first week and I am so proud of myself, because there are some workouts I didn't know I could even do because I was always so scared of failure or getting hurt. But Theo, one of the coaches and owner, is very helpful and knowledgeable. He will push you, but because he knows you can do more. Everyone asks "omg, is it tough?" Or they comment "wow, you're insane!" But in reality, yes it's tough and yes it's hard, but the toughest and hardest part is the commute and snapping out of the lazy mode. Because, once you walk in, everyone is welcoming and their energy motivates you to want to be better than you were the first day you got there. I have to admit, the weights and the warehouse like layout is very intimidating. But, once you get past your first day it's truly not as intimidating! Someone commented, they charge you $10 for not showing up. While this is true, they are very understanding and they add the $10 no show fee as a means to push you, not for any other reason. And trust me, I slept in 2x my first week and they understood and didn't even bother charging me. I strongly encourage everyone to give it a shot, you will love it!!! read more

My absolutely favorite gym in Houston. I'm in love with the quality of coaches, and the great programming. The barbell class takes the cake, with a Tues/Thurs/Sat powerlifting focused class-- it's really taken me to the next level with my fitness. The gym is split into two different garages, which allows them to fit in multiple classes at a time, and allow for space for open gym and their Yoga/Sweat classes as well. Classes are reasonably sized, and the price is very reasonable ($180/mo for unlimited classes). If you're coming here, you'll notice that the facility is always changing. Theo, the owner, is always working on making the space more efficient, fitting more equipment, and otherwise improving the gym! Your money will be well spent here. read more

What can be said about this place? Nothing short of amazing. Have been a member for over 8 months and it's amazing. HtownGym has top level staff who are great at what they do. Love this gym! I started here earlier this year after becoming bored at my previous facility. I was nervous to come here at first. I am 55 and definitely older than most of the folks here, but everyone was very welcoming. I have some restrictions on what I can do and all the coaches work with me to scale the exercises to my ability. They are always checking my form and answer all questions patiently. This summer I had to work around a vacation-related wrist injury. The coaches had great suggestions to keep me working but not do further damage. I was able to completely recover and continue to build my strength. I definitely feel like I can work with my limitations and still continue to grow stronger and more fit at a pace I am comfortable with. Unlike my previous gym, I always feel like I've gotten a great workout after CrossFit. Everyone at the gym is great! From your fellow workout colleagues, to the owner, front desk staff, and the coaching staff. Meals from Torched Grill are great too. Don't wait as long as I did to check these guys out. Before joining H-Town, I was very intimidated by crossfit, but still curious to try it out. H-Town quickly made me feel comfortable (not during the workouts, because they're killer) but with being new to crossfit and taught me the correct form for all of the movements. Let me start by saying that I'm a 5'1", 100 lbs (tiny) female and when I initially started crossfit I was so intimidated. I've always heard rumors that crossfit makes you bulky, and I felt that since I didn't know ANYTHING about lifting I would only embarrass myself. I have never been more wrong. From the moment I got there everyone, coaches and members both, were so inviting and more than willing to help. I started off on the 15 lb bar and could only lift 35-45 lbs in a complete workout. Boy, I was really sore the first few weeks. With the help of EVERYONE at H-town I am now lifting my entire body weight (sometimes). They make sure I have good form before and after all workouts and explain all the movements beforehand. I have never felt pressured to do anything I didn't feel I was capable of doing. If anything, the coaches ask me to remove weight if they feel I need to. I've learned that at t H-town its about doing it right and safely before making an awesome WOD time to post. I also really appreciate the fact that I can see the owners put back into the gym what its members are paying. For example, everything is tracked on a program called Wodify. This program takes out ALL the guess work of what previous workouts or personal records are. Don't understand what I'm talking about? Then GO check it out. The door is always open!!! I have been staying in shape with Crossfit for five years. Sadly, my gym cut the 7:00 pm class and I had to find a new home. The trainers here are very good. The scheduling is the reason I cancelled my membership after the initially required three month period. You have to sign up for classes in advance. If evening classes are your only option due to work schedule, these are popular classes. You have to remember to sign up as soon as possible after they open the classes (a week in advance). If you have a demanding job with a schedule that can be unpredictable, you have to remember to put your work problems on the back burner and cancel the class that you had to sign up for several days in advance. If you are immersed in a problem and forget, not only do you pay for a class that you don't attend, but you are charged $10 and sent an e-mail scolding you for being inconsiderate. I simply don't have the time or desire to devote that much attention to making a cross fit schedule work. If you need flexibility in scheduling, you might want to consider another box. read more

Happy coaches = happy members. :) The owners, Theo & Carrie really care about the members and the coaches getting what they want fitness wise and in an overall lifestyle from being part of this fantastic community of genuine people. They invest a lot back into making the gym atmosphere cater to a more awesome environment to workout in constantly, (not just when something breaks). I've been a part of CroosFit H-town for almost 2 years now, and I can't imagine my life without this gym and amazing community of people. It would be quite dull and definitely not as healthy. Absolutely love this place. Walked in, completely out of shape... arguably having never been in shape my whole life. Sure I've run a couple of 1/2 marathons... but never have consistently worked out or lifted weights. I have zero upper body strength. Instead of being intimidating, Crossfit Htown is insanely welcoming. There are some folks there who have been working out together for almost a year. They are a great group and wicked fit, and also incredibly inspiring. It's their progress that keeps me coming back. That and the fact that the WODs are completely addictive to a person like me. I love the intensity of Crossfit. It's fast and seriously intense and I leave there drenched in sweat and on a complete high. read more

H-Town is an awesome gym. Working out there was an amazing experience. The staff is really knowledgable about health, fitness, form and endurance. Its a fun environment and everyone is really motivational and welcoming. Great box, great people. I will say that my core muscles are way more defined / stronger than before. And my endurance is better than ever. I love getting into a WOD, getting my heart rate up and pushing my body. I think that I have never not been sore after a workout. I never thought I was strong enough to climb a rope to the ceiling, let alone multiple times in one workout. Or handstand pushups... I couldn't even do a handstand. I highly recommend it read more

H-Town has such a wonderful and supportive community and my husband and I were sad to leave when we decided to move to Dallas! We spent about seven months training here and coach Theo and the others helped us get on the right path with our workouts. Weightlifting is my favorite part of CrossFit and the Olympic class they offer was a great introduction. I highly recommend the gymnastics class as well which is a unique class not every box offers. We've continued CrossFit in Dallas, but will always miss H-Town as our first box! read more
