After not having done crossfit for over 10 years, and now being in my late 30's, i was a bit intimidated and nervous about injuring myself. After working out with Shimi and his AWESOME, supportive, friendly trainers I'm so glad I pushed past the nerves and am investing in my health- Roman is great also. I too have heard its an easy way to injure myself, and it seems as though the trainers are more patient, knowledgable and open to pushing me to my limit, not the limit of some crossfire champion or what's written on the board. It's truly the most intense workout I've ever done and after each class im charged up and so happy I pushed myself as hard as I did. I highly recommend this workout if you want to get in the best shape of your life- just speak up and go only as hard as you want. And I've read people complaining about their pricing. First off, there's nothing better than your health in invest in. Secondly, they're very very upfront about the costs and the cancellation policy with auto-pay- they sent a whole email detailing it and made me submit that i understood the terms very clearly. A personal trainer is easily over $100 a session and this is so much less than that as just as valuable. read more

Thanks to Shimi and the other fitness instructors, I got to workout (which I LOVE-I mean endorphins are the BEST), get stronger, listen to amazing music, meet new friends, and have fun!!!!! AND I even got some PRs!!!! Working out has always been something that has been important to me but my wife and me have not always felt comfortable going to certain gyms for lots of different reasons (I.e. queer couple, toxic masculine gym culture, past cross fit injury, being goofballs and weirdos and some people don't like that, etc. etc.) but at BKFit we felt comfortable to be ourselves right away!!! There are people of all different CrossFit levels here from beginners/first timers all the way up to elite athletes and everyone can workout together and have fun!! Outbreak Bedstuy is my regular box but I got a chance to check out the Clinton Hill location, recently, for active recovery on a Saturday afternoon. I won't say which location is better (because I may have a slight bias hehe) but something is to be said about a box that offers not only CrossFit, but HIIT, powerlifting and active recovery. This active recovery class was exactly what I needed after weeks of sumo deadlifts, push presses and handstand push-ups. Coach Mike's voice is so soothing and his attention to detail is unmatched. Can't wait to do this class again--even if that means cheating on the home box. read more

Let me just start by saying that I enjoyed my time at Crossfit Outbreak for the most part. The reason for my low rating is because they are charging way to much for what they offer. When I joined they promised a lot. They told me that there were going to be additional classes, open gym hours, etc. This didn't happen for months and it is still not fully implemented. They only offered two crossfit classes on weekend days at my location, which is outrageous for charging around $220 a month! When I cancelled my membership (because I could no longer afford it) they charged me $164, just for cancelling! I fulfilled my 3 month contractual duty to them as well. I enjoyed many of the teachers and thought very highly of them, but a couple of them were very new and misinformed. I pulled my back once because one of the instructors did not know how to properly teach the members how to lift the weights. Enter at your own financial and health risk. read more

I've been training here for about 8 months now and I've learned a ton and become much more fit. I've healed many physical problems with my body including my "bad" back, shoulder pain, knee pain and my asthma has improved drastically. The trainers at Clinton Hill are so friendly and willing to teach and break down each movement. I truly believe that Coach Mike prevented me from getting years of treatments I didn't need from doctors because of his knowledge of anatomy and trigger point massage / foam rolling. I was a skinny programmer with no self confidence who smoked for 20sh years, never thought I'd be a cross fitter. Now I'm much more built / tough and confident. A few weeks ago I thought I would try out crossfit. (cue the laughter!) Ahahahahaa. Yes, my friends, and my brother all started laughing. Not because I couldn't do it -- I have worked with trainers for several years now. "That's injury city", they said. "You're gonna get injured". It's crossfit. What do you expect? And yet .. and yet. For some reason -- I don't know, maybe the specific group of people there? Maybe because I have lifted weights in the past? Maybe because I thought I had good form? -- I thought that somehow, I would be different. It seemed so convenient. So motivating to be in that group of people all working with intensity. So much _cheaper_ than a personal trainer (i'm supporting 3 kids y'all!). I had visions of my former, more muscular, pre-pregnancy body .. (cue laughter) AHAHAHAHAHAH It only took 2 sessions for me to injure my back & knees. NO stretching before or after exercises. NO initial eval. And the staff has no concern for the fact that I'm injured. Now it's 3 weeks later and it still hurts every time I have to take the kid out of the crib (remember those 3 kids?? ya). When it comes to crossfit, my advice is: BE CAREFUL. I thought I had done my research, and decided to pay per class initially to avoid the dreaded 3 month commitment & cancellation fees. WRONG. I only later found out that my partially-completed process means I'm tied into a contract I don't believe I authorized. I thought I wouldn't get injured because I've been trained in safe weightlifting previously. WRONG. Now I'm committed to paying for 3 months of use at a facility i'm literally afraid to enter. Every time I see the crossfit outbreak ads in my neighborhood, I want to laugh. or cry. or both. "WE CHANGE LIVES" hahahahahaha ... you change lives alright. for the worse! read more

Reasons not to join this gym (I can't in good conscience call it a Crossfit Box) 1. The contracts: When you join, you commit to paying for 3 months membership at minimum ($220/month). They do not clearly explain that in order to get out after 3 months, you need to give them notice at the end of 2 months. So I ended up paying for 4 months, plus their $164 cancellation fee (who charges for cancelling after getting 30 days notice??). 2. Their philosophy: This is from their website: "Our goal is to reach as many people as possible and commit to do everything in our power to ensure they maximize results and exceed their fitness goals." The way they've gone about doing this is opening multiple (5) boxes. This is CrossFit's response to multiple locations: "CrossFit no longer allows multiple affiliations. We believe it is better for an affiliate to concentrate on a single location to ensure the quality of hands-on involvement by the owner. So, in essence, the rule is: one trainer, one box." https://affiliate.crossfit.com/cf/faq?q=affiliate. Note: I never met the owners in the 4 months I was paying dues. 3. The Box itself: It's a small space (obviously, it's Brooklyn), but it's very poorly laid out and they allow large class sizes, which means that any workout requires athletes to divide in 3-4 heats. That means a lot of time waiting around, when you should be keeping that intensity going. 4. The quality of experience: They have 15 coaches, but with 5 locations and 5-7 classes per day, you do the math about the quality of experience. Note: I think the coaches work their tails off to do their best, but if the owners don't set quality expectations and provide the right training, then you're going to receive whatever shows up in a coach's jersey that day. They also don't offer any on-ramp or introduction classes. They have a free class which means you show up, and join a regular class, which makes it very easy for people to injure themselves without proper introductions to Crossfit movements. Overall, if you're looking to improve the quality of your workouts in an environment that cares about your well-being, health and safety, then this is not the place for you. If you're an experienced athlete, but my review has made you nervous about needing a loan, then Classpass is a much cheaper alternative that doesn't charge you a cancellation fee or lock you into a multiple month contract. I can't say enough about the coaching and programming at Crossfit Outbreak. A great space, with lots of equipment, and challenging but super fun workouts! Flashback to September 2014... I had been running road races and taking classes at a typical gym. I was looking for something more challenging and dynamic. I met Shimi, Mike & Adam and was quickly convinced to check out the box. Having never (I mean, never ever) lifted a barbell in my life, I was at first intimidated. But the coaches were so clear and thorough in their instructions, and constantly reinforced form over weight until I gained more confidence. Now, just over a year later, I feel so motivated and strong and ready to take on any challenge life throws my way! I came to CFO fairly fit thinking I knew what I was doing. The coaches here straightened out my form and got me lifting heavier right away. There is more nuance to seemingly simple lifts like the bench press and the squat than I thought. Getting started on Olympic lifts has been rad too. Cleans and Snatches look bad ass and have me feeling stronger. read more

When I found this place I discovered the pleasure of working out. My husband started to go 2 weeks after I started because he never saw me getting up at 5:30am to workout. I'd been lifting for years at all-purpose gyms, and running too, but I never had any inclination to join CrossFit. But after accompanying my wife to CrossFit Outbreak for a free trial class in February 2015, I signed up for their 2 classes/week plan. The following month I upgraded to unlimited classes because I liked it so much. And now I am letting my old gym membership lapse. The biggest benefit for me is that it is impossible to get into a rut with my training. I had settled into a pattern of doing certain exercises at my old gym (the big ones: squats, bench, deadlifts, pullups, etc.) So, I got pretty good at doing those exercises. But then my progress stalled. I started to not look forward to going to the gym. I just told myself that consistency was good, and forced myself to go. At CrossFit Outbreak I discovered that variety is better. The only thing that is consistent in my training now is variety. I just go to each class with an open mind and try my best. Most of the time I learn a new movement or improve another one. A surprising thing is that the amount of weight I have been able to lift in traditional exercises is going up. I didn't think that would happen. Had I ever pulled 405 at my old gym? Nope, but I was able to do that in my second month of CrossFit. Things that are great: the instructors/coaches, the equipment (no bent bars), and all of the people who attend classes. Things that would make CrossFit Outbreak even better: a water fountain (maybe even one with refrigeration), a couple more fans, and a few new songs in the playlist. read more

Joined about 2.5 years ago and have enjoyed my experience since day one. The coaches are extremely supportive and able to assist with any needs that I have in terms of mobility, strength, and modifications. The Outbreak community as a whole is also very empowering and full of energy. It is nice to see so many people come together and support each other. It does not feel like a gym as much as it does a family. Everyone is welcoming, motivational, and caring about health and wellness. The number of programs that are offered are also a great reason I have stuck with Outbreak. I really enjoy the interval and rowing classes that have been added since I joined - great way to include different styles of exercise. CFO is a great space to be in. read more

Of the 10 or so cities where I've practiced Crossfit Brooklyn had one of my favorites: Crossfit Outbreak. The coaches are dedicated to your improvement - strength, flexibility, cardio, and skills. Ask questions and they are happy to provide detailed answers with examples. The workouts are balanced, always starting with a warm up, new skill and a workout. Saturdays are partner workouts if you're into that (I am). The gym is nice & clean, with a big garage door opened for natural light. The people have various ranges of experience, but I'd give this a 10/10 for beginners and intermediate athletes and a 8.5/10 for those who want to get their butt kicked. Sometimes the workouts did not leave me gasping for air (although that could also be my fault). Your progress is recorded in their system so you can track continuous improvement. read more

Great box! Everyone is very welcoming and supportive of each other. The coaches are cool, witty & very knowledgeable. The WODs are difficult to say the least...but they scale it down to your level. But for me, the members and the overall vibe of the box is what i like the most. *************** UPDATE!!!! About six weeks in and I feel amazing! I am faster, stronger and a lot less tired than when I first started. The WODs are awesome! Coach Shimi does a great job with programming. you get a good amount of strength and as well as metabolic conditioning... a.k.a cardio. Coach Dan can always be counted on for comic relief...and coach Mike is hands down the best 1 man cheering team this side of the Hudson...lol. All are great coaches and they all will kick your butt any day of the week. If you're looking to get into crossfit, I would definitely recommend Crossfit Outbreak. read more

The only reason that I gave them the second star is because the trainers are great. I do wish that they wouldn't throw you in on the first session; instead I would have liked to review some of the movements/exercise in a session prior to a "real session". My form and posture were constantly wrong, being that there are no mirrors - I had no idea. I knew going into this that the monthly fee will be steep and I was ok with that, i was not ok with leaving the gym feeling fleeced. The intake is haphazard at best. No review of actual cost or what is in the contact. Bottom line is I paid for a month that I did not use the gym/class,since as you are required to give 30 day notice (which was not discussed). I had no idea and attempted to cancel 3 days prior to the new month. the coup de grace was that i was charged $164.25 as a fee for cancelling the contract!! - Apparently you have to pay that fee no matter when you end (3 months a year etc)That is utterly ridiculous! I've had a really positive experience with these guys. There are a lot of CrossFit gyms out there so it is difficult to distinguish yourself in a crowded market place. There are some very good and dedicated trainers here but what really impressed me was how they dealt with an issue that came with my membership class package. I have had some bad injuries over the last year that has stopped me from training and I have young kids. Adam and Shimi were really understanding about it and allowed me the flexibility I needed when I needed it. Good trainers and good people. read more

CrossFit Outbreak has been a great introduction to CrossFit. I had many concerns coming into a box for the first time and was convinced that this wouldn't be for me. One month in, I have been completely converted. The results have been more than I could have imagined. My part of the deal is that I have to show up and put out effort. They, they do the rest. This has been the easiest workout routine I have ever been entertained. At first, the movements will be intimidating. But, they quickly will become second nature. This is the third Crossfit I've been to and it is by far the best. Here's why: 1) The coaches' focus is on the client: our form, our improvement, and our enjoyment. They're personable, friendly people that clearly love what they do and are good at it. Every class is an opportunity to learn and perfect not only your work outs, but warming up, stretching, and other pivotal aspects to fitness. Honestly though, they are SUCH nice people! 2) The people there/the clients. From newbies to experts, people of all fitness levels, hipsters and Hassidim, and women and men of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. No one feels left out. I am not a fitness expert; I normally feel intimidated at the gym; but these guys make me, and everyone, feel welcomed each time. They find a balance between pushing us beyond our comfort zone, while understanding our limitations. The result is a diverse group of easy-going and supportive folks at each and every class. 3) The gym itself, or in Crossfit parlance the "box," is super clean and looks rather nice. I'm not afraid to shower there if I have to - even if I left my flip flops at home. And the design is rather aesthetically pleasing for a gym. The light bulbs, the extras you can rent/buy (towels, protein bars, water), the music, and the computers are all value adds. 4) No culty vibe. They aren't trying to force a lifestyle or diet on you. They want to help you find the best approach for you using the tools and approaches they know work. Just go there, try it, and you'll see for yourself. read more

Ive been lucky enough to drop in to many boxes across the states and Outbreak is unique for a couple of reasons - the first is the state of the equipment and the environment, always immaculate which makes those chest to floor burpees that much more tollerable. I picked up a 3-month membership at CrossFit Outbreak when I first moved to the area and absolutely loved it. My only regret is moving to Manhattan and not being anywhere close so that I can continue going. The facility is great with lots of space so that you aren't cramped during a WOD, and is kept very clean. I also loved the different classes that are offere -- rowing classes, as well as outdoor bootcamps on Saturdays. The coaches are extremely attentive no matter what your skill level, and are always willing to help 1-on-1 if you wanted to practice a certain movement or just needed the extra help. One of the things I love the most about CrossFit is the sense of community every box develops, and the coaches have definitely created a great atmosphere for that. TL;DR: This is a great way to break out of a plateau and take your fitness to the next level. I am a male in my early 30s, and had been steadily gaining weight despite a pretty good work out schedule (1 hr of cardio 6-7 days/week). I've always worked out, but my routine wasn't cutting it anymore and I was beginning to slide back in my performance. After 3 months of Crossfit (3-4 times per week), I can say this is definitely a way to push yourself into a better level of fitness. The workouts are no joke...every single workout pushes me to the brink, but I've learned to expect that and power through to the end. I've gotten a lot stronger. When I started, I would get exhausted working through the movements even with no weight. Now I am lifting decent amounts, and I am still getting stronger. They have you track your progress through the WOD app, which allows to specifically see how much you have improved. The coaches are great. They vigilantly coach correct form and they will evaluate and correct you every single class, even if you are a regular. The movements can be complicated and it takes a while to get them down. I usually get a tip or correction every single class. If you are a beginner, they will give you extra attention. I didn't know any of the movements when I started, so it took me some time to learn the basics and I am still perfecting them. The coaches were always patient and helpful. The community is supportive and everybody I've met has been very nice. I am not a big guy and I don't lift tons of weight, but nobody is judgmental. As long as you show up and work hard, anybody can fit in and have fun here. read more

One of the stars is just for Mike Wade who is a professional and excellent Crossfit coach. The other 2 stars reflect a business that soured in my opinion over time. Originally one box, focused on athlete experience and community, eventually the owners took to expansion across Brooklyn and forgot who their original members were and that they made the place. They started cutting corners, leaving the gym messy, disorganized, and not a comfortable place. Although there are some great people here including good coaches, a business is judged by how it views its clients .. in this case, crappy. After their expansion, the owners became seemingly fixated on the business side and uninterested in providing a great workout experience or decent and clean facilities. Finally, in the end, as a parting gift after more than adequate notice for myself and my girlfriends membership cancellation we were charged the full fee for an entire month we were completely unable to use due to a move. Make sure you get everything in writing from them as they will try to keep charging you after you cancel. We signed up for one month and made it very clear we didn't want a recurring package. The trainer assured us we would only be charged for one month and could renew at the end only if we wanted to. They went ahead and kept charging us after the first month and refused to cancel or refund the unauthorized charges. We had to cancel our cards to keep them from continuing to charge us. I love this gym! I moved to Brooklyn and came to this gym mostly out of convenience since I live so close. Since joining I have fell in love with this place! The coaching staff is amazing and knowledgeable, they will help you with anything you ask. The programming is great! there is always strength and a conditioning portion. They have even introduced interval classes for people who may not want to use a barbell and Yoga classes to help with recovery! No matter what your fitness level is, this place is awesome! read more

I never thought I would do crossfit and I may have also originally tried it just because this place is within 5 minutes walking of my place, but after two months of going consistently, I can honestly say I actually look forward to my workouts at Crossfit Outbreak. Everyone is super nice and supportive, there are always options for scaling the workouts if you need to (and you still feel like you've worked hard). The workouts push me to my limit - in the best way possible and it's great being able to track progress through the website and app. As someone who hadn't worked out in a year or more I was nervous about it, but there was no need to be, the coaches are great and so is the whole community of people who go.
