This review is mostly for selling clothes! The store itself is well-stocked with tons of mostly casual options for men and women. A few nice name brand items have shown up on the racks the dozen times I've been to the store, but I have a feeling most high end luxury products aren't quite right for the college crowd. I have had mostly positive experiences at the store. It is usually clean enough, though I have definitely seen the racks look like a tornado blew through. The buyers are usually pretty friendly and keep a straight-face even if some of the pieces they see might be like "WTF, seriously..??" They're usually pretty fast too, which I can appreciate because the line to sell can definitely get pretty long. The worst was when I had to wait about 50 minutes before it was my turn and I left with $7 just enough to pay for parking!! Womp - fail whale. BUT usually I have had a decent success rate with my items, so have come back to sell a bunch of times. Apparently now there's a Crossroads Trading app so you can check in to sell before you even arrive...definitely will check that out!! read more

Rebekah moved things around for me to fit a stroller in the dressing room and then made very sweet conversation that provided a nice contrast to the coldness that can be easy to come by in the bay. I prefer 2nd street up the road to sell my clothes at. Last time I brought a full bag of clothes here they held it for up to a week only to tell me I couldn't get any cash for any of my items and it was instead donated. 2nd street would have least give me about $10 read more

If you just keep your head down and don't ask questions, don't try anything on, don't try to sell real designer clothes, don't bring in friends of color, and definitely don't get in their way anytime near closing time, you will have a fun experience with cool and moderately priced fashion! Really upsetting, I brought in a top from the ss 14 Givenchy line, specifically a silk top from the Tribal & Robot prints by creative director Riccardo Tisci. I was told this top was racist, implying I was racist for having it, and the buyer said they wouldn't want to work in a store where something like this was allowed to hang. Maybe this doesn't hang in the Berkeley Crossroads, but it, along with a number of other high fashion pieces I brought in (from Gucci to Raff Simon to Rick Owns uyu), do hang in the closets of people who we celebrate for their breadth of knowledge when it comes to the elements of style that make up an ensemble. read more

Wasn't aware that the wait would be so long. I came in with just a couple items and had to wait an hour to be called up. Luckily, they text you when it's your turn, so you're free to leave in between. They only took one item (corduroy pants), and I left with $6. Came in to sell a few weeks back. Did a drop off, and was told by the cashier very clearly and plainly that I would be contacted by phone when my things were ready to pick up since I didn't want to donate the rest of the pieces rejected by them. Kept waiting for a call but never got one. Called back today and went in to pick up my money and remaining clothes. When I get there I'm told that my clothes have been "donated" bc I didn't pick up in 3 days even tho that's the opposite of what I was told when I did my drop off. But apparently that's what I signed and agreed to on the "contract" Obviously upset, the cashier today asked if I wanted to talk to a manager. I didn't bother bc I obviously wasn't getting my clothes back or any additional money. Lack of communication. Lack of staff training. Obviously they can't keep a strong staff bc of shitty pay/management. Don't waste your time. read more

I drove a long distance from home to this place with the hope of selling some items. All of them are new, some with tags still attached. Among these are fall and winter clothes, which is precisely what they were interested in. I am sure they seek brand-name items but offer only a small payout to people. I brought all my items back home, as they did not take anything! This experience was a waste of my time, gas, and parking fees. I had hoped to get few bucks at least cover my expenses for the trip, but that didn't happen. I should have just donate or keep it. I won't return to try again. workers were extremely rude nobody explained what to do when I showed up to sell. They asked "have you ever sold here before?" To which I said "no this is my first time"... expecting a rundown of what to do. They told me to check in on the iPad and after I was done I asked what to do next and they rudely replied "leave it in the waiting area" and then turned their backs with no further instructions. After I got the text my items were ready (3.5 hours later) I had to drive the hour back since at that point I went home. I was then snapped at by the worker that they texted me an hour ago and that I only have 30 minutes from the message to hold my spot in line. Which nobody has told me before. Don't sell here. I went in to sell clothes and after once I was being paid this worker who has a brunette wavy mullet decided to make fun of my hometown after seeing my area code. This harassment was unprovoked and not funny at all. They continued to tell me that their lame band played there which was unnecessary small talk to smooth out the offensive rhetoric. In addition, this worker is not from my hometown which gives them no right to say anything. I just wanted to sell my clothes and leave, it's just irritating being met with this type of behavior unprovoked after selling my clothes to this company. read more

Don't bother selling here (or shopping for that matter). The taste level of their buyers is questionable, to put it mildly, and you will end up wasting hours of your day in retail purgatory - I've sold here a few times over the past decade & they were never great. Crossroads was always my second resort; after selling to Buffalo up the street on Telegraph (now closed rip), I'd often bring the discards here & usually make enough for it to be worth the second thrift stop. But somehow they've slid even further downhill. My most recent visit I had to wait over two hours for them to only accept the ugliest, tackiest clothes I had. I left with a headache and nowhere near enough money to make it worthwhile. My advice: save yourself the trip and post your items online instead. read more

Last week I brought a few men's leather jackets and a beautiful red ski jacket to Crossroads Trading. The clothes, when new, cost about $900.00. They were lightly used and in very nice condition. I brought a simply styled Anne Klien purse which had not been used.I wanted to see what Crossroads Trading might pay for such items. The person who checked the clothes was very polite. A woman who walked around the store answering questions was also very nice. I was offered a $50.00 store credit or $35 cash. I took the cash. I waited about 1.5 hours to have my clothes evaluated. This seemed about what I might expect for such a store that no longer makes appointments. read more

selling ones clothes can be a vulnerable experience; after all unless we're professional, these are personal decisions we double down on again and again. selling clothes in the 90's, myself being broke ass- was stressful and desperate...I'm blessed to be a little less so and was just doing a closet purge. They bought a fair percentage of what I brought in, and the most refreshing aspect was the lack of attitude- used to be they would give you a whole run down about why they didn't take pieces- even if you didn't ask, which you wouldn't- you'd just try to leave with your dignity. Cashing out Devon was especially friendly and optimistic, commenting other locations might take the pieces they didn't buy today- also different buyers see things different ways, so...very unpretentious all around. The inventory they do have was impressive, lots of well priced pieces in pretty good shape. only criticism is the wait which you really can't fault them- they've remedied this by an app you can use to check in which I will do next time I try to sell. read more

I took two large bags of clothing in to sell--about 30 items, mostly jeans, tee shirts, and a couple of pairs of unworn shoes. The person behind the counter took my things to review and I strolled around the store shopping. In about 10 minutes she called me back, said they would be buying one thing, and that I had nice things but they were seasonal--sweaters and long sleeved items. Couple of points here--the one thing she selected to buy was a jacket; there were ZERO sweaters in the mix; there were two halter type sundresses in the mix. I could easily see that all my things were still in the bags, still folded as I had given them to her. So...I don't believe this person was able to actually look at roughly 30 items, assess them, and refold them in roughly 10 minutes. If you don't want to buy my stuff that's fine, but at least look at them first. I HATE having my time wasted. read more

Here's the secret: this Crossroads location caters more to the young college crowd, which might lead you to believe that a professional 30-something lady wouldn't have much of a selection here but, in fact... the more "mature" styles (which they do carry some of) are much less picked over at this location vs. Rockridge. Good ol' supply & demand! So, while you may have to hunt a little more, you won't have as much competition for things like a pair of Massimo Dutti leopard loafers ($37) or a vintage-inspired floral gown ($13). It seems like the dressing room staff are always less friendly than the check-out staff, but I don't blame them. Today was my first foray into the world of selling clothing, so I walked into Crossroads with my mindset prepared for rejection and being told I was getting pennies on the dollar for the one or two items they were willing to take from me. Just so it wouldn't be so disappointing if it wound up happening. My boyfriend and I both had clothing to sell, so we walked around to the counter and left our names on the list. The salesgirl told us it would be about an hour wait because of all the people ahead of us, so we decided to go have some lunch and come back. An hour later we returned, only to find they had zoomed through the list in way under an hour and had been passed up, but luckily they helped us right away. The buyer who helped me, while completely devoid of humor and personality, took a surprising amount of my stuff. I was lucky enough to have been selling what they were looking to buy for fall, but some of the criterion they buy clothes under didn't match what they took from me: the buyer told me they weren't taking graphic tees because "they're a hard sale", but proceeded to take five that I had anyway while passing on others. She also told me they only take what's been in department stores and magazines for the past 1-2 years, yet took items I've had since high school. I guess I was more fashion savvy than I thought back then. What bothered me about my experience was that, unlike the other buyers, my buyer was tagging the clothing she decided to take from me and throwing them into a go-back bin before even telling me what she was going to give me for them or asking me if the prices were acceptable. If I had decided not to take the prices she wanted to give me I wouldn't have hesitated to make her dig through that bin and give me back every single item she took - extremely poor customer service in that regard. Don't ever assume the customer is going to blindly take what you're offering just because they've come to sell. And speaking of customer service, what the hell is up with the attitude of some of the employees here? One of the buyers was particularly unpleasant to everyone she was being forced to help by being employed, and I caught her rolling her eyes while going through one girl's clothing. It's hit or miss with the salespeople here, in terms of attitude and friendliness. I walked away with way more than I was expecting to get, which isn't anything to complain about, but the whole experience could've been made better by buyers who didn't make the experience feel like they were pulling teeth. At least seem a little grateful that I'm giving you my old clothes to make a profit off of. read more

This was my first time going to Crossroads and I was a little worried that none of my clothes would be up to par with what they're looking for because I don't have any nice name brands, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they bought about half of the big bag I brought in(: I was also a tad concerned with the mixed reviews I've seen, but it was great. I'd say my collective experience here as both buyer and seller is around 2.5 stars. I should note that the items I have bought were actually at the Fillmore location in the city, which I think caters to a slightly different clientele. But that's just my personal opinion. As a seller, I can say that if you buy from Crossroads, you are getting a steal because we sellers are getting ripped off. I sold 4 items (brands were Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, and Max & Cleo/BCBG) for $19. One of the items was brand new too. The things that were rejected did not surprise me at all, as they were more suitable for fall/winter, but I was surprised that for two *BRAND NEW* BCBG items that were retailed for $450 and $180, they were going to give me $40 and $20, respectively. Of course I had to say no. Fortunately, the customer service here was great, and the young lady helping me out was perfectly straightforward about the selection process and advised me to try eBay for my BCBG stuff (and if any readers are interested in what I have, please PM me!). She was very sweet and actually didn't pressure me at all to sell them my clothes and said I could take some time to think about it. In fact, I ended up taking back one of my items and am glad I did. I guess my main source of disappointment is how little money they give you for items that I believe are worth much more, even though they're used (or in my case...brand new). I thought these items would quality for consignment...but it seems like this location doesn't offer that service, perhaps due to its location and the clientele they attract. Have been coming to crossroads for years and they have been my savior for purchasing new clothes. I always always go off-season (buy coats/jackets in the summer and summer wear in the winter). Easy way to always find stylish items at 50% off. Then after the season is over sell them back and try something new! read more

One of the great things about Berkeley. You can't find many places like this (although I hear that Crossroads is opening up branches in So Cal), or the Friends of the Library or Half Price Books elsewhere, especially somewhere like LA. I love the concept of reusing clothes, a ridiculously high percentage of waste is textiles. Can't say much about what kind of clothes they sell, but I had a very pleasant experience selling my clothes. Basically they bought about 3/4 of the clothes that I brought it, including all of my old Abercrombie sweatshirts, old, old, ridiculously worn - but still in good condition - jeans (including a pair of Levi's I bought at Costco for $15 maybe four years ago, I imagine I got something like $5 back for those), old Express jeans (probably 3 years old, which I wore practically everyday for two years, and for which I originally paid $10-15)), some old screen printed tees, a few blouses, some flats, blah blah. The downside of the selling process is that they don't let you pick and choose which ones you want to sell based on how much they'll pay you for it, so make sure whatever you bring in you definitely do not want. Lastly, different workers buy different things. So sometimes you get lucky and sell EVERYTHING, other times not so much. In my experience, I would go when there's a long line and an associate, or inexperienced buyer is helping out. Yeah that only give you 35% of what they price it, so you really don't get a great return, but you definitely get much more money than if you donated to Goodwill. For whatever reason, I find myself more often going to the Rockridge Crossroads than this downtown Berkeley location, however, I'd say they are in equal in terms of size, selection and courteousness (is that even a word??) Parking is slightly more annoying, since it's all street parking and all metered, but a few weeks ago on a Friday afternoon, I was able to find paid parking nearly right in front of the store. I do feel that they were a bit understaffed. The poor girl buying clothing had to keep stopping to do other tasks because there only seemed to be one or two other people around. Selling clothing works the same at all Crossroads and they do have the drop off option similar to the College Ave location. Since I came her on a day off, I opted to wait around and only had to wait about 15 minutes for my turn. As always, I found they were fair in what they bought and honest, but professional about why they didn't take other items. Just a quick tip for sellers-if you can spare the time, it's worth bringing some items here that the Rockridge location didn't buy. They actually took about 3 or 4 items I had tried to sell over on College Ave a few weeks prior. That's happened to me on several occassions, so it might be worth a try for you as well. I didn't end up buying anything but the girl at the register who cashed me out from selling clothes was super friendly and bright-a nice girl to talk to and definitely was nice to see them hire such engaging and helpful sales and cashier staff. It was my first time visiting here as I am always checking out new thrift stores. The fitting room associate was very helpful and offered to hold some of my items on the rack if I had over 10 items. The store was very organized and clean! The store is small, but does have everything from different sizes, colors, and popular brands. I had a nice experience. I just wish the clothes would be priced a bit lower since they are second hand clothing, but I understand it's a business. I spent $85 on 4 items and just an fyi they add an additional 3% fee to your total for "surcharge." read more

Now this is a store that I can support. I used to work for Buffalo Exchange, way back in the day and there was some drama. But I came here, desperate for a dress, and chose to overlook the bad blood between the two stores. I loved walking in here, because it looked neat and clean. It wasn't cramped with sagging, unkempt racks. I could walk easily between them. I liked the layout, the selection of clothing and really felt good shopping in here. Moreover, I found what I was looking for. I was looking for a dress for my reunion and found one that fit and didn't give me the heebie jeebies. It's hit and miss because the clothing is used, but in a pinch I was able to go there and find something in my size that looked good on me and I really appreciated that. It was super easy to bring in clothes for selling/trading and not as intimidating as I thought it would be. The girl who helped me was informative and explained why she couldn't buy certain things from me, she was honest and fair. As for their stock, you really have to be willing to sort through racks and racks of clothing, some of which were not organized by size, but color instead. Fitting rooms were clean and well lit and I didn't have to wait in line for anything (selling clothes, checking out, fitting rooms). I went on a weekday afternoon. I had planned on taking cash for my clothes but instead found 3 things to trade from their racks instead! 4 stars instead of 5 because I got impatient sorting through clothes that were not organized by size. One of my favorite thrift stores to shop at! I love the clothes they carry and the staff members are usually pretty friendly. It's not as cluttered as other consignment stores and it's definitely one of the more organized ones. They have clear labels (dress, shirt, pants, etc.) for each rack, which is nice. I want to love the business model here but I've had several poor experiences, as a buyer and a seller that make me not want to return here. I first went on the recommendation of my friend who frequents their SF branch and pulled me in when she came to Berkeley. She always leaves with a bag full of well priced, attractive clothing. As a man, however, I rarely find anything worth buying. They lack any sort of formal wear and their clothing is not retro, nor is it particularly stylish (although it does all seem to be designer branded). The selection is poor and out of the handful of clothes they have in my size tend to suit my body type (I'm average height, fairly lean). I've been back a couple of times and have always left empty handed. When I've gone to sell a pair of jeans that my mother bought me and I've barely worn, the first employee said they were all good - except for a small spot of bike grease that hadn't been expunged by my washing machine. I washed them again, took the bike grease out and went back for the another employee to tell me they weren't looking for jeans in that wash. I understand they have to be selective but I wish they could at least try to be consistent to avoid wasting customers' time. read more

After reading of some of the other reviews of this joint I feel happy to report that I had a perfectly pleasant, unremarkable visit. I poked through the racks of color-sorted clothes, checked out the nice selection of gently used purses, slipped a few things on and off in front of the mirror, made my way to the front, and purchased something. I didn't get anything stolen from me. I didn't have to get rung up twice. Nobody rolled their eyes at me. I did get asked if I wanted a bag for my purchase but so what? I said yes please. I'd return again when in the area. In fact, I look forward to returning again. It's a nicer shopping experience than the Berkeley Goodwill and a far nicer shopping experience than Berkeley's Out of the Closet. Sometimes it's fun to find a cheap little goodie that wasn't so cheap for the first person who bought it. This place is perfect for that. read more

COVID review: I've been coming to Crossroads in San Jose for a few years and love their store! I'll sometimes drive out of my way to SF or even Oakland to check out their other locations. Different stores carry different things and you'll never know when you'll find a cool item somewhere else. The concept is amazing and as somebody who shops and then donates a lot of clothes, it was perfect. I take all my gently worn clothes over there and chose to trade it for credit. You get more money back in credit than cash which is fine for me because I use the credit when I'm broke (don't judge) but still want to shop a bit! They have awesome clothes and accessories for men as well. They have a wide arrangement of clothes from H&M to free people to Louis Vuitton on consignment and all for great prices! Don't expect goodwill prices but definitely A LOT cheaper than actually going to Zara. A plus side is sometimes you find treasures from brands you didn't know existed. Now since covid... You have to make an appointment ahead of time to sell. It's honestly even better than before because sometimes there would be a line of 4 people selling/waiting when you'd get there. This cuts that back by a lot. Crossroads has an app that they used before but I believe it's been useless since Covid and you have to call to make the selling appointment. They have hand sanitizer at the front door and ask you to sanitize before coming in which is pretty cool because you know everybody is walking in with sanitized hands at least! The checkout line is spaced 6 ft apart from others. You will occasionally bump into somebody while shopping but they have mask on and it's inevitable. They seem pretty strict on their rules. read more

I love how everything here is color coordinated! It makes everything look better. I always find at least one thing I want when I go here. The first time, I got a 49ers scarf for $10+tax! I was superrrr happy! It's old school looking and so cute. It was such a steal since the football season was just starting too. AND it was brand new with the original tags! The second time, I got a cute button up top for $10+tax. It was still in good condition and I love wearing it. It's pretty clean here and easy to navigate; they have quite a collection! The customer service is alright. The cashiers seem to hate working here or something...I've never seen them smiling but maybe it's because I come near the end of their shifts/the day. Oh wells, not a big deal since I only talk to them when I pay at the end. Bring your own bag and they'll donate $0.25 to a charity (I think...they donate it somewhere...haha)! read more

I was tempted to go HAM and almost bought everything I tried on. I ended up walking out the door with 3 new dresses. I had to drive to Oakland to drop off an item to someone in the area and figured since I was driving all that way I would come to the local crossroads to try to sell some of my items. This is the last time I will come here both to sell and to shop. I want to mention I've been here at least a few dozen times both as a customer and a seller, sadly, each time was a poor experience due to the customer service. Not sure why everyone here is so rude compared to the San José location but maybe it's just a Berkeley thing? Talia was the only person who's name I noticed but I had asked her why an item with no tags or brand on it was being sold at the same price as a new aritzia piece. I asked if they could go lower on the item because of it having no brand or tags besides a "made in China" label on the inside. She was really rude and said "did you want it or not? I'm not gonna give you a discount just cus of that, so what." Who speaks to customer this way? Also, a heads up to anyone thinking of selling here...DON'T. They tried to give me 8 bucks for a 100 percent cashmere sweater that was new and took well over an hour just to check two other people's bags before mine. Usually this would be standard but when you have one girl buying for most of the time and the other workings walking around are too busy chatting and gossiping...it makes me wonder how much quicker we all would have gotten our items checked if people were doing their jobs. I will stick to the San José location from now on and stay clear of this place. The prices are just as funky as all the items they chose to take. read more
