Just a few wonderful service examples: They hand-cleaned a skirt that another dry cleaner had over-treated with chemicals, causing severe blistering. They repaired a very damaged sweater which would have cost who knows how much somewhere else for just $14. Once I didn't have cash and they told me not to worry about it till next time. And we are really specially appreciating the way Mr. Jack, the new owner, treated us. He always has a big smile, with friendly manner and useful knowledge to help, in cleaning and in alteration. Having lived in Montclair for decades, I was so happy to finally find Crown Cleaners. The owners do a terrific job. Further, they are always so lovely to talk to. One time, I brought in a blanket that was just rife with dog hair; they got all the hair out of it, made it look like new. I took a dress to this place for some minor alterations. The staff were friendly and the receipt said $11.50 for taper and sew. My friend whom recommended this place to me said she has been taking clothes here for years and never paid over $20 for quality work. When I picked my dress up it was $70. I gave the women my receipt and showed her that she quoted me $11.50 for taper and sew. She said that was for the cost of dry cleaning - why did I need to get a new dress dry cleaned and why did it say taper and sew not dry clean next to the price. Anyways we argued back and forth - I felt I was totally ripped off - I had looked into other cleaners that did alterations and was never quoted over $40. When I talked with my fried she stated that she had also recently picked up a hemmed pair of jeans for $45. Needless to say we are not going back. read more

I have tried several dry cleaners in Montclair over the years, and Crown Cleaners is the best dry cleaner I have ever found. They consistently do an excellent job. I have brought in stained items that I thought were beyond hope, yet they managed to remove the stains. Mona (one of the owners) is also an excellent seamstress. I once brought in my mother's 60 year old satin wedding slip that had a few moth holes in it. Mona was able to artfully repair the slip so that the holes vanished. Our daughter now wears it as a nightgown and was thrilled to receive it. Also, with men's dress shirts they hand scrub the stains around the collars and cuffs with Oxy. I like the fact that they are environmentally conscious and do not use toxic chemicals in their process. When you pick up your clothes they do not have that awful dry cleaning products odor. The owners, Jim and Wanda, are extremely friendly and their customer service is excellent. Truly an outstanding business! read more

I have been going to Crown for several years. They offer occasional discounts to seniors, do a good dry cleaning job using non toxic products, and treat me very well. If I ever had a problem or issue, I point it out and they do their best to make an adjustment. Their tailoring is superb. Pricing can be a bit expensive, but if you comparison shop, you probably can't do much better and still have a GREEN cleaner. This is a family-owned business run by earnest, hard working people, and they deserve our support. Rude, petty customers who would argue to the death over $20 that has already been refunded to the customer (that green bag deposit story) create bad vibes and unnecessary turmoil. I applaud CROWN for surviving in this tough economy with such a demanding clientele. read more

My wife and I took our clothes here for a while and even gave them the benefit of the doubt after they lost a favorite cardigan "shell" sweater that matches a tank top my wife wears. They claimed to have looked all over for it but could not find. Disappointing to say the least, and an expensive item to replace. When we found a better cleaner, we tried to return our Green Bag, and darned if the same thing didn't happen to me that happened to a previous customer on yelp. The woman running the store (Owner I think), claimed we could not get our $20 deposit back immediately because sometimes she credits back the cost of the bag to her "best customers" while they still use it and needed to check her records to see if I was one them. I knew I never received credit and asked for cash instead. She refused and said she would credit my card after checking records. She called back a couple hours later and acknowledged she owed me $20 but was not comfortable crediting my account without me being there is person to pick up the paper receipt! What? I finally talked her into crediting my account over the phone ( I think). Hope this works out. Otherwise i am out my 20 bucks. Enough brain damage...i am going somewhere else. read more

Terrible, terrible service. Brought in 6 pants for hemming. Weren't ready when they said they would be - then completely cut off a false cuff that was supposed to remain. Said they'd look into finding the pieces they cut off and would call me. Never called. When I came back a week later, they charged me extra. Terrible business. She charged me around $110 for a simple dress alteration that I could've had done for only $60 at the mall. I didn't bother asking Mona about her prices before hand, because I assumed that it would be similar to what I was quoted at other legitimate establishments, but I was mistaken. When I confronted her about her outlandish prices, she claimed that her "seamstress" took 8 hours to complete the dress and that she pays him $50 per hour-LOL! So, if it took 8 hours, she's paying her seamstress $400 to hem a dress?! Clearly, this woman is a terrible liar. If someone knows what they're doing, a simple hem should not take that long. Just because people in the Hills have money, does not justify lying and ripping them off. read more

We have been using Crown Cleaners for the past eight years! The owner and those who work for her are all very friendly. They have gone out of their way to offer customer service at a very high level to some very demanding customers. I know because I've witnessed it! In fact it's amazing how rude and demanding some customers can be. But the positive side of it was how professionally the owner and the workers handle themselves in those un-fun situations. I like these people, they have always done a good job with our clothes, they have always communicated when there is a degree of risk in cleaning a difficult-to-clean article, and they haven't lost a piece of our clothing. I'm not sure why the mean spirited and flaming reviews exist and because of the vitriolic nature, I can't believe it's only about the cleaning. These people are wonderful, and in an answer to an earlier email...I am not related to the owners, do not work for them, and only began using their service when other cleaners trashed our clothes. We have gone to them for a couple of years now, and never a bad experience. Far more worthy than a one-star rating. And far more worthy than the treatment they receive by some of their customers...I saw the video of the rude and criminally inclined woman who did everything she could to get a discount, and finally resorted to chasing Mona to the back of the store and attacking her. Had men's shirts cleaned. Did not ask price. When picked up shirts, the price was $3.95/shirt!!! Was blown away. Other laundries charge in the $1.90- $2-$2.25/shirt range. I believe must laundries use the same facility to do laundry cleaning. Hence, the price gouging, in my opinion, is too much. They just lost a new customer. read more
