As an avid baker with a major sweet tooth, I can honestly say these were amazing - you really would never be able to tell they were vegan! Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is one of my all-time favorites, and this one was so moist and delicious. Surprisingly though, the cookie butter cake ended up being my favorite of the two. It was perfectly sweet, packed with that warm cinnamon-spicy flavor, and incredibly moist. I can't wait to try more of their baked goods! read more

Crust shared on Instagram that they were serving up a biscuit breakfast sandwich and that got my attention, so my husband and I decided to check them out on one of their early mornings (they are only open at 8am on weekends starting on Fridays). So on a Friday, we headed there at 8am and ended up getting that biscuit sandwich - a biscuit with a JustEgg and sausage and cheese - and we also picked up a bacon egg and cheese on a croissant. We got an assortment of brookies (like a chocolate chip bar), brownies, and peanut butter blondies; an assortment of cookies; and two specialty cheesecakes (s'mores cheesecake: marshmallow base w/ ganache drizzle +toasted marshmallow + graham crumb; and, french toast cheesecake: maple/spiced base w/ whip cream + maple syrup drizzle + dash of spice). I've been here a handful of times since my original review and have had consistently excellent experiences. A few things to highlight: the oatmeal raisin cookie is a 10/10. The blueberry muffin is on the denser side but delicious and will definitely order again. The pumpkin spice scone was just ok, not as good as their other scones. The tiramisu parfait was good but not the best vegan tiramisu I've had. The croissant breakfast sandwich was well-loved. i'm 2 bites into the pistachio cardamom cake and had to write a review. unique flavors- not overly sweet, and super fragrant through every bite. Great texture on the cake itself, the frosting is rich and velvety. My partner got the Wildberry pop tart which was also awesome, it reminded her of a jelly donut. i've liked everything I've tried so far, but this has something special. If you like more floral/spiced/nutty desserts as opposed to chocolate/fruity/sweet ones definitely a good choice- well done Crust :) read more

For those reasons, I never felt it urgent to check out Crust Vegan Bakery. I'd recommend you avoid this mistake and give them a go ASAP. I've had a handful of their cookies and cookie sandwiches. OMG! Every bite is amazing. I cannot tell it doesn't have any of the things I would regularly expect to make it tasty. So glad I got to visit Crust for the first time-- I've followed their Instagram for a long time, and everything looked just as delicious in person! The shop is very cute. In addition to the baked/refrigerated goods they have chocolate, candy, teas, and various gifts. My friends and I tried the apple pie sundae, wild berry poptart, and vanilla cheesecake. The worker was helpful in guiding our decisions-- there were so many options to choose from! Aside from the cheesecake being on the plain side, everything was fantastic. I was really disappointed with the flavors and the service! Staff was pretty rude and didn't seem like they really knew how to talk with the public. The cookies I bought, and a chocolate poptart was dry and very faint in flavor. The pop tart icing popped off the second I took a bite. The only dessert I was really pleased with was a blueberry (I think) cheesecake that had lavender sprinkled on top. The edge crust of the cheesecake contained the cheesecake filling, which was pleasantly surprising. The flavor was faint on this dessert as well, but had a good ratio of filling, crust, and topping. The absolute worst part is this business still follows COVID protocols. That is FINE. Until you get to the end and they present you the tablet with the tip section and go "what buttons do you want me to press??" Makes for a very uncomfortable situation for your patrons. As someone who is lactose intolerant and has almond nut allergy its not always easy for me to find desserts and treats that taste like they're non vegan counterparts.. but Crust nails it every single time. From there cookie sandwiches with incredible frosting in between, or there pop tarts, or cakes, or there very savory bagel bombs, you absolutely cannot go wrong. And as of a few weeks ago they now have vegan soft serve! Oh, and they have waffle cones (and cake cones). It doesn't taste exactly like Dairy Ice cream, but it is so so close. The Sammie was tasty, I really love the texture of the sugar cookies, they were crisp and slightly soft in between the strawberry filling. I almost never post a review but because of my experience, I felt I needed to. I walked in for the first time and I was met with extreme attitude from the worker. We showed up and the cake was already done. Mind you our party was 2 weeks out. The owner Meg had the audacity to say " freeze the cake" . She didn't offer any compensation to make things right . Prices are outrageous. Beyond reasonable. Came in tonight to get my BF a snack and he picked out a dessert cup, when I saw they had (frozen) loaves of Zucchini bread. I brought two up to check out, not thinking about price. I was pepared to pay something reasonable, around $10-12 a loaf. They were $24 each. For a regular sized loaf of zuchinni bread. Insane. The employees LITERALLY agreed with me that the price was outrageous. Both of them said it. One said "What I've been told is that the prices are high due to the cost of vegan ingredients." Which is patent nonsense. Vegan ingredients can be slightly more expensive, but this is just an insultingly high mark-up. Full stop. Even if each loaf cost $5 to make, which is highly unlikely, $24 is absurd beyond any sense of reason. The dessert cup alone was $10, by the way, but he was hungry so I just paid for it. It was a $5-6 dessert, but whatever. Just don't come here. It's that easy. Don't support businesses that are gouging their customers based on a specialty eating requirement/preference. I come to get their vegan soft serve all the time and every time it's been DELICIOUS, so when I needed to pick up a cake on short notice I knew this place would be the place to go. Long story short, my friend dropped the ball and forgot to get a cake so I went and grabbed one of their premade Vanilla cakes and it looked beautiful! Since they have time requirements for piping stuff, I just popped over to acme after and got those little gel writing pens. I'm writing this 1 because they had cute cakes available last minute on a Saturday evening, and 2- because that was the BEST CAKE I've ever had. None of us were vegan, we just needed a cute cake, and when I tell you this was the most moist, perfectly sweet balanced cake I've ever eaten in my life, I'm not kidding. I drove 5 miles to this bakery for vegan cheese cake. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. One slice of strawberry cheese cake was $5.50, an amount I am gladly willing to pay for a delicious dessert but unfortunately, this tiny slice of cake did not live up to the price! The cake had a sweet strawberry jelly type glaze with "0" strawberries on top. Made from tofu, the "cheese cake" part of the dessert had no cheese taste at all. To say it was the texture of cheesecake is a stretch. The only comparable taste to cheese cake was the sweetness. I don't live on this side of town so it's rare that I'm in the area but i happened to be this past weekend and was not disappointed with my visit at all. Do the treats taste vegan? Poor customer service especially when they ask for a tip. Attitude, attitude, attitude!! I asked prior to buying the Vday treat box if i could have specific sayings and the girl Meagan specifically says in an email that i can swap out the cookies if i dont like the sayings. So I WLwent ahead and bought the treat box knowing this. Went to pick it up today and I didn't like the sayings on the cookies. They gave me the lamest ayings on purpose. Asked to swap out and they wouldn't validate the email. I gave them a second chance since I had an issue prior. Ill have to find another shop because I dont do liars or attitude. They be really trying me. Most bakeries will go above and beyond for their customers especially when they be asking for a tip and overcharge items. Poor service indeed! They finally have a store front!! Delicious is an understatement. Crust Vegan Bakery has the best fresh pastries and baked goods. Back in May (4 months ago) we had an opportunity to try their cinnamon buns and cosmic brownies and ever since then we have been hooked. Last weekend when we heard they were opening a store front down the street from our house we marked off our calendars and counted down the days! Their new store front is in a perfect location near the heart of Main Street Manayunk. Currently no seating and yesterday they sold out of all baked goods during their soft opening so be sure to go early! My new personal favorite is the strawberry rhubarb pie! So good! Almost everything I've had here has been top notch! My favorites are the traditional ice cream sundae, the turtle sundae, the turtle cheesecake, and the sugar cookies. Everything is vegan. Great to-go baked goods, vegan soft serve, and more. Expensive but worth it! Tried Crust for the first time last week! I thought the place was very cute. They have you order at the door and they bring you your order. All items are displayed in the front window. I got the pistachio rose cinnamon bun, the pb&j bar, the fudge pretzel bar, the slice of pumpkin bread, and a chocolate chip cookie! Absolutely delicious and prices are a steal compared to a certain (psssst still delicious) other vegan bakery in Center City. My roommate actually introduced me to this bakery and though I don't have dietary restrictions, I do have an insane sweet tooth. After a gruesome exam, we decided to treat ourselves to a wide variety of pastries. The best thing is that this bakery is locally-owned and they also support other local businesses! +PARKING: Street only, but not horrible compared to Center City. This part of Manayunk does get very very busy on the weekends. +INTERIOR: Very strict on COVID guidelines. Everyone is wearing masks and gloves and they only the store to maximum 3 customers at a time. It smells wonderful when you walk in and it's very clean. Right when you walk in, there is a display of non-pastry goodies such as cards, soaps, teas, face masks, etc. +FOOD: Now onto the good stuff :) They sell so many different varieties of dessert! They do have savory offerings, but we didn't order any. They have cookies, cakes, pop tarts, brookies, scones, and more! I love that they have a variety of classic flavors woven in with more eclectic flavors. I tend to gravitate more "spicy" flavors and unusual flavor combos, so here's a quick snapshot of the things we got: -Rosemary Chocolate Chip Cookie: I actually really liked this one. The rosemary gives it a savory quality that reminds me of a biscuit. I personally like crispy, hard cookies. My roommate likes softer cookies, so she wasn't a big fan. I like desserts that aren't too sweet and I liked how the bitter dark chocolate when together with the rosemary. I would pass if you aren't a fan of rosemary. -Blackberry Ginger Scone: I definitely get the ginger, but the blackberry is no where to be found. The texture is on the dry side, so perfect to pair with tea or hot coffee. The ginger gives it a subtle warmth. Good for a cold day. I just wish that the blackberry would pull through. Maybe instead of the ginger icing, they should work more of the blackberry into it. -Lavender lemon pop tart: I didn't really like this one as much. It reminds me of a lemon bar and the zingy-ness keeps the pop tart from tasting like soap from the strong lavender. But! My gripe isn't the flavor so much as the texture. Simply put, the pastry is too thick. I don't know if it's because of the vegan ingredients, but it lacks the flakiness you would normally get from a traditional shortcrust pastry. The dough works for their cakes because you have so much filling to balance it out. But, the pop tart is too much pastry. Definitely is tart though! -Raspberry Matcha Cheesecake: I LOVE RASPBERRY MATCHA. If you know me, you know that one of my favorite matcha tea drinks incorporate either raspberry/strawberry purées or have blueberry flavor with it. The earthiness of the matcha pairs so beautifully with the raspberry jam? On top of the slice. I don't know how they do it, but Crust has their cheesecake/cakes on point texture wise. So creamy, so fluffy. Not too sweet. The matcha is in their dough and in the filling. The raspberry on top is not too much. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. -Coconut Cream Cheesecake (???): Gah! I hate it when I forget to write down notes for my reviews and don't remember the exact menu item. On one hand I love that Crust has a rotation going on of seasonal and new flavors. But sucks when I want to showcase their amazing food and read the menu to jog my memory. Along with the raspberry matcha cheesecake this was one of our favorites. The coconut filling was so light and refreshing. Didn't taste like sickly sweet dried coconut at all. I really felt like I was eating pure whipped coconut cream. For coconut lovers, this is a must! +PRICE: Very fair for the quality and size they dish out. Each piece of pastry cost between $4-5. So not that much different than what you get at an upscale bakery. Very very reasonable especially for this side of Manayunk. Overall: Crust is a go-to if you're looking to try new desserts. They love to experiment with recipes and flavors. There's always something new to try and the wide variety of stuff they have is all so delicious. I highly recommend their cake slices and cookies!
