She asked if we wanted to sit on the high table or wherever. After we chose a spot and sat down, she gave us the menu and asked if we've been here before. I haven't, but my cousin has, so we didn't need explaining. We started off with onion rings. For our main course meal, we got the Preset Bucket and the House Bag, which was $20. It comes with 1/2 ounce crawfish, muscles, shrimp, and clams. All of them come with complimentary corn, sausage pork, and baby red potatoes. There's no substitution; you can take out, but you can't replace it. We got to pick our seasoning and I got the House Magic Dust; which is a combination of Rajun Cajun, lemon pepper, and garlic butter. After you pick your seasoning in the bag, you'll pick what kind of heat/spice level you want. I got the Entry (hot, but not too much) and my cousin got the Lava Flow (which you have to pay extra and sign a waiver). The waitress told us that the cook is new, so the food may come out slower. When she brought our water out, she kept checked on us and brought out hot, fresh, and crispy onion rings. They were perfect! She kept letting us know that the food is coming soon. We weren't mad because we understood, even though the food did take a long time to come out (it was busy after all). We finally got our food and she thanked us for waiting. In addition, she gave us extra Snow Crab Legs. We didn't get the corn, but that's okay because I'll take the Snow Crab Legs instead. I asked for gloves to eat with since this can get messy. She came out with 2 bags with buckets, one of them had all the sauce and the other for the shells. The seasoning inside the bag was flavored just right. My cousin asked for the hot seasoning/sauce on the side, so she can dip instead. I decided to try it and I was choking because it was super hot. It was extremely spicy for me, I had to chug my water. They weren't kidding that it was hot. The waitress kept checking on us and refilling our water. She made our experience much better than what it could have turned out to be. In the end, she said whatever we had left, we could take home. I would definitely come back again because the seafood and onion rings were amazing. Crustacean used to be my favorite seafood boil place! When they were in the smaller building the boils were filled with loads of seafood, sausages, corn, potatoes and magic dust galore. Well, since they have expanded and moved to a bigger space they have decreased the amount of food and the seafood is no longer spilling on to the table. The bags are still big, but the size portions have lessened. I'm not sure if Market Price has risen, but for the price I would rather take the 40 minute drive to the ocean. I usually order down by the river, but during my visit it was more like down by the pond. The only perk was the sweet cornbread that taste like a cross between yellow cake and cornbread. The service was decent and the waitress was friendly. She couldn't help the portion size because she's not a cook, owner or manager. I understand that prices rise, but I think the food was better in the smaller building. Stopped by here tonight (Thursday evening 7:20p.m.). My 1st visit here. Service was cool, I forgot the waitress name but she was attentive. I ordered the onion rings for an appetizer, they were a tad bit over cooked. For dinner I ordered the Coops Combo which is basically crab legs and shrimp. I specifically said I didn't want anything spicy. It was recommended I get the garlic and old bay sauce. It was slightly spicy, to the point i wish it wasn't. Spice, for me, Takes the taste away from whatever I'm eating so I was unable to enjoy it as much as I could have. The potatoes were too soft and the shrimp was a little over cook. I didn't eat all the shrimp. The sausage and crab legs were fine. The amount of food I got was worth the price of $30. Next, I visited the restroom to wash my hands. I had heard about Crustacean Boil and Grill a few times and figured it was time to try. I met my family and everyone seems to have had a good enough time. The serving size and price is pretty decent considering the shellfish and crab legs involved. I think we were all surprised the side items like sausage, potatoes, and corn were as minimal as they were, and doubling up for an addition charge still only gets you an additional piece of each. I think this would be a very cost-effective way to serve your customers better. One of my family who had been here one time previously and recently said after eating they left still hungry on their first trip in. Food quality, flavor, and selection were all up to par. Our service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. We lucked out and were one of only a few tables in the whole place. I have a pillar of any business in any type of customer service industry which is to not let a detail in fine print or a small sign posted somewhere take the place of communicating with your customers and neither of those things should be used in place of customer service. Which brings me to not telling anyone at my table that tip is already included. Our tab was several hundred dollars in the end and we began to add another weighted tip on top of that, not noticing tip was already factored in. Fortunately we noticed after a minute or two. I can't find any possible excuse as to why you wouldn't tell your diners this in advance. To me it amounts to lying and stealing quite honestly in hopes that your customers won't notice and you might run the chance of receiving up to 40% tip just because they failed to notice the * at the bottom of the menu (which I assume was there, I actually never noticed). The must more reputable way to go would be to be up front with your table, serve them knowing your tip is already guaranteed and if anything, try to provide excellent service and inspire them to add something additional at the end of their meal as a reward well earned and deserved. This to me speaks to the character and culture of a business and leans into a way of doing business that keeps my from supporting you. To make a one-time quick buck at the cost of your reputation is something I can't decide for another person nor a business owner, but to me this comes at the cost of your reviews. First time visiting this establishment. I was super excited because I have always wanted to check the place out. We came for dinner on a Wednesday, not long after they opened for the evening. Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted and seated. It was not crowded at the time. The atmosphere was nice. The music selection was a lot of hip-hop/rap music, (which I personally don't mind). Our waitress appeared not long after we got situated. She was knowledgeable and kind. I skimmed through the menu debating whether I wanted to make my own bag or a preset bag. Since I wasn't sure what to expect, I ordered their House bag which had 1/2 pound of the following: shrimp, crawfish, clams, mussels, corn, sausage and red potatoes. I chose the House Magic Dust seasoning since I read and heard so many great things of the combo of all of their seasonings. I opted out of adding any heat since I was sharing some with my daughter, or else I would have added their Lava Flow which you have to sign a waiver and pay an additional price. It did not take long until we got our food. Our waitress set our orders down. You could see the steam coming out as she opened our bags for us. It smelled and looked great. While my bag looked good, two people in my party were missing their corn/sausage/potatoes in their preset bags. The waitress was informed and she immediately brought it out. Finally, It was time to dig into this buttery, garlicky, Cajun goodness. Absolutely not disappointed in the flavor at all. I want the House Magic Dust on everything now. There are several spice option to select. The food arrived in a plastic bag in a bucket. The waitress open the bag on the table lined with paper. I also order corn hush puppies 6 for $4.00. They were served hot with butter(extra charge). They were sweet. My diner partner ordered the fried catfish platter that came with a side. He ordered onion rings which was good sweet and hot. Today, I had another catfish Po-boy. I'm determined to try new things and the Po-boy is what I'm exploring. Granted, I know that Crustacean is not the place that you'd typically head to in search of a sandwich but my wife got herself a seafood boil so I did have a legitimate reason to be there. Enough of the reasons that I'm here, let's talk about the taste of this culinary delight. First, let's start with the seasoning on the fish... perfection! It was fried nice and crispy yet really soft. There was a remoulade that enhanced the seasoning of the fish and added an element of heat which only made this sandwich even more satisfying. The bread was soft yet held up well to the remoulade, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. The combination of everything was simply divine! I had the cole slaw as my side. I'm a cole slaw connoisseur so I know what I like and how I like it. This cole slaw was the real deal! Everything fell into place with this meal. I added a little bit of heat and DH opted without. Each boil bag also comes with andouille sausage, corn, potatoes, and cornbread (which has got to be the best cornbread I think I have ever had). Saw this place on the way to Gelati Celesti and gave it a try. BF is a fan of similar types of restaurants in northern VA and said this was ok in comparison and he'd go again. They are having a soft opening now, 20% off until late September, and employees asked for suggestions. We suggested more seasoning in the bag and more seasoning on the sweet potato fries (good texture but needs something extra). Place is very casual with brown paper to cover the mess you will inevitably make. Most will likely get a bag with one type of crustacean or a mix of them that is boiled with a type of seasoning, and a spice level. Also spice level is not comparable to say Thai spice, so go hotter. For non-crustacean lovers there is a small selection of food like wings (pretty good) and chicken strips. They are pretty unique in the area but also cater to a specific taste. Try it out. read more

We all ordered buckets and they were very accommodating since someone in our group had a shrimp allergy, they ensured this would be handled properly (and they were). Idk what happened. They fell off. I always got their snow crab with like half a pound a shrimp and extra sausage with the house special sauce I think it's called. But last time I went my shrimp were soggy. And dirty. They have the best cornbread. Almost taste like cake. They seasoning even changed. I might try to go again and hope that these last two times were just bad timing or something because they were busy. But since then haven't been back. Finally visited this place and it was surprisingly better than expected. I personally think it is hard to find a seafood spot in Richmond that is price worthy and has good food quality but this place was a good spot. Walking in, the environment is very casual and they do have booths and tables and a bar. I went during the day and I was surprised at how dark the inside was considering the light outside but I think it's just the way the setup is. Light does come in but there's not much light actually inside the restaurant. But no worries you can still see your food. We walked in and we were greeted by then host. This is probably the only thing that I did not love because when we did walk in there were two hostesses that sort of just stood there for a minute and then directed their attention toward us. It was a tad odd. We chose the booth option and met our waiter. Her name was Stephanie and she was amazing and sweet and just very approachable. I ordered the By The River and House Bag. One had the house special seasoning and the other was garlic butter and lemon peppered. I was pre warned on spice so I went with the usual, not mild or hot because I didn't want to ruin a whole bag with my inability to tolerate spicyness. Both bags were very good and flavored well. I also got french fries and corn bread. The corn bread were two small pieces which was saddening. They tasted good , more cake like but for the price I sort of wish they were bigger pieces. (3.5 stars) After a long Saturday, the boyfriend and I finally found refuge at this casual seafood spot. For a Saturday afternoon there was a bit of a wait. However, the hostess and another waitress on duty were very polite about updating us on the status of available booth seating. We were seated near the bathrooms where there was little lighting, yet cozy. We wasted no time ordering the #1 Fan Favorite: the Coop's Combo. I was pleased with the amount of seasoned garlic butter they'd put in my bag, I was not so pleased with the meager 2 snow crab legs that came in the boil bag with LOADS of perfectly seasoned jumbo shrimp, a single piece of corn, two mini sausages and two mini potatoes... I understand that seafood is a bit pricey, but the portions for sides were inexcusable. The snow crab legs' freshness was also questionable... the outside shell was a bit too rubbery for me, but nonetheless, the seasoning was perfect. Our waitress Sydney was very attentive and checked on us often. Both my boyfriend and I had lots of shrimp leftover. For $30 each, I may consider going to the store to purchase my own snow crab legs next time... My only suggestion is that they add some cocktails to the bar area! One of the male waiters gladly offered to make me any drink I'd request, but to build on their already popularity, I think it would be a good idea to offer a Happy Hour! read more

Their sauce is fingerlicking good. I created my own bucket. I had the snow crab and shrimp with their house sauce (all three sauces combined). The service was wonderful. We had very attentive staff. I live in Northern VA--but I'd come back for the sauce. It was thaaat good. read more

The food was good. It lacked presentation. They set the table with a brown paper that helps with the mess but it's not appealing. The mac and cheese was not good. It's really small and always busy. The wait was 30 minutes to be seated and then another 45 minutes for the food to arrive. I understand it's fresh cooked seafood so that really isn't the issue. read more
