Good afternoon I wanted to share about an amazing experience that I had yesterday at BioLife in…read moreSaint peters. I am visiting from out of town. I'm originally from Arizona. I was nervous about going to a new center. However I've been going for about a month now and it's always been a great experience yesterday as we were all preparing for a big storm. I wanted to make sure to get my donation in prior to the storm. As usual everything went smoothly and I was lucky enough to meet Lily. Lily was the tech who greeted me as I settled into the donation chair. It was super busy however Lily took her time greeted me was very kind and engaging. We talked a little bit about the weather and discovered we are both big fans of I need to combat the side effects of the cold weather. Long story short it was a great donation. She was efficient kind and went out of her way to make sure that I was comfortable as well as all of the other patients she was working with. You all have a great team. I appreciate the opportunity to donate at the Saint Peter's center.

I don't know if the staff needs more experience sticking patients, or if they need to hire more staff to monitor for issues during donation, but something needs to change. For the second time in two years, there was too much time taken during an arm switch, causing the blood to clot and me to be deferred for 8 weeks. That is about $1,000 I will be missing out on, through no fault of my own. The machine had stopped and was making a notification for several minutes before anyone came over. Then the phlebotomist couldn't get my other arm stick done successfully due to not putting on the cuff correctly. The staff pretty much just shrugged and said sorry...and walked off. I feel like there is some sort of compensation owed for loyal donors who have long deferments due to the staff making errors.

However, I am deeply disappointed with the level of care and service my 88-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia, has received at Christian Northeast Hospital. I want to preface this by saying that when an ambulance is called, they have consistently insisted on taking my mother to Christian Northeast Hospital. Each time, my brother has agreed out of immediate concern to get our mother stabilized as quickly as possible. During her first stay on the 8th floor, my mother fell and injured her hand, hitting the same area where she previously had brain surgery. I was shocked when the charge nurse stated that "she should have known not to get out of bed." For someone living with dementia, that response was both concerning and heartbreaking. Then, on May 11th, my mother was readmitted to Christian Northeast Hospital. The first room she was placed in had a roach, and later that same week, on Friday morning, a bed bug was reportedly found on her bed. My adult son was informed that he could not stay overnight with my mother. Because of serious safety concerns, I immediately called and spoke with Nurse Christina on the 10th floor, explaining that not having someone remain overnight with my mother, who suffers from dementia, was simply not an option. During our conversation, I was told there was concern that my son may have brought the bed bug into the hospital. I responded, "My adult son, who is an attorney--you have to be kidding." Nurse Christina then stated she would contact her supervisor, and thankfully, after further discussion, my son was permitted to stay overnight with my mother. For dementia patients, familiar support, consistency, and supervision are critical. Mind you, earlier that same week, my mother's room had already been changed because a roach had been found in it. Then, on Monday, May 18th, I received a call stating that my mother would be discharged that day. I informed the doctor that I was out of town, and he stated that the social worker, Michelle, would contact me. When Michelle called, she informed me that transportation had already been arranged for my mother to be taken home at 3:30 PM. I explained that I had spoken with the doctor earlier and informed him that I was not home. Michelle stated that Dr. Quasar had given permission to discharge my mother. When I attempted to express my concerns to Michelle, she hung up on me. When I called her back, my call went to voicemail. I then contacted the main hospital to file a formal complaint and was told I would need to speak with the charge nurse. I also attempted to contact Dr. Quasar again but was told he was not on that floor and that there was no way to reach him. As a family, we entrust healthcare facilities with the safety, dignity, and proper care of our loved ones--especially elderly family members who are vulnerable and unable to fully advocate for themselves. This experience has been deeply upsetting, disappointing, and frustrating. One of the greatest concerns in North County is the lack of competent and accessible healthcare resources during times of emergency. It is heartbreaking that many families feel they must drive 45 minutes away to receive quality healthcare for their loved ones. Our community deserves compassionate care, better communication, accountability, and a more effective system for addressing patient and family concerns. We can and must do better for our seniors and vulnerable loved ones.
