Grabbed some lunch to go. Nice place inside some bar seating and also table seating. They were friendly and fast. I got the grilled chicken salad the chicken was really good and cooked perfect. There wasn't much lettuce. The Lechon Asado was juicy and tender meat with great flavor. They forgot to add the plantains that came with it so I was a bit bummed about that. It was our first time here and found this place on Yelp with good reviews. The food was good but not worth the poor service. We walked in and a girl was leaning on a bar and pointed over to where we could sit, a minute later she brought us two menus. There was only one table of 4 being waited on at the time. Fantastic little family owned Cubano restaurant! We were staying across the street and saw all of the great reviews and decided to try. We were seated right away, they have a small dining room with table service. Lots of folks filled tables, so they are clearly popular. We ordered a couple of traditional mojitos that were very well made and fresh. We were not too hungry so we split their sampler appetizer plate and a Cubano sandwich. Hwy A1A, Indialantic, FL 32903 5 Stars It seems I have broken the code on my random name generator after repeatedly disappointing Italian restaurants run by real Italians. The key to getting it to work properly is to type, as Tarzan said, "make Cuban food." And voila, the name Cuban Island Restaurant popped out at me. Glancing at the GPS, I knew this was automatically a win as I didn't have to go to the mainland. In fact, I didn't have to go far at all as I was there in two shakes of a snake's tail. Seated and handed a menu, my glorious service professional, Normat, soon approached me. Normat is everything a wait staff member should be and more. Normat was exceedingly helpful in going over the menu with me, and to that end, I placed an order for some Carnitas, the Churrasco and chimichurri plate, and one Cuban Sandwich. Enjoying the digs, I snapped a few pics and awaited Normat's return. Within a short amount of time, my food was in front of me. A wave of enticing Cuban aromas assaulted my olfactory senses like so many tasty atoms. With eager anticipation, I immediately dug in as soon as Normat cleared away. First I tried a sample of the Carnitas. I really love me some good pork Carnitas, and these were some of, if not the best, I have ever had. They were incredibly tender and immensely flavorful. Each bite was a veritable cornucopia of intermingling island flavors. Moving on to the Churrasco and chimichurri plate, once again, I was overwhelmed (in a delightful way) with Caribbean flavors. I could go on for pages about the complexity of the spice mix and how each seemed to enhance the other, resulting in a mountain of tastiness, but you should just stop reading and go there already. This brings me to the final item on today's glabrous sojourn on our charming barrier island: their take on the ever-popular Sandwich Cubano. As you can see by the picture, this included a mix of thinly sliced ham and roasted pork, oozing with melted Swiss with a pickle and mustard slathered on then pressed Cubano style and toasted to a sumptuous golden brown. This tasted as good as it looked and I was in foodie paradise! This place unequivocally serves some of the best Cuban food in Brevard County and the owner is Italian. I love that! I don't know what other people ate that deserved the 4 and 5 Stars that I've seen, but I think that my 1 is being generous. The food was outstanding. We started with the Cuban Sampler appetizer. It included two empanadas (one chicken and one beef), fried yucca, croquettes, ropa vieja, and picadillo. The sampler is served with Cuban mojo sauce. The waitress also brought out two different hand-crafted hot sauces that were excellent. I thought the orange was spicer than the red. My favorite items on the sampler platter were the empanadas and the ropa vieja. Ropa Vieja is shredded beef, and is very popular dish in the Cuban culture. My daughter and I shared the traditional Cuban sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich is a combination of ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard pressed between fresh Cuban bread. This place changed management some time ago, but has the same vibe and food for the most part. It's a popular place that's pretty busy in the evenings. The Mojitos are popular here, but unfortunately I wasn't able to try it out this time around. However, the folks next to me were living for them! Nonetheless, I tried out their Papa Rellena for an appetizer and Grilled Seafood Dish. You'll get complimentary Cuban Bread with a Ham Spread and some Cuban Hot Sauce. This is a nice touch and a great starter! The Papa Rellena is a fried mashed potato ball around some beef. It was fried nicely and the mashed potato was super thicc and creamy! Very hearty and rich, but great for an appetizer. The Grilled Seafood Dish featured Grouper and had shrimp, scallops, and onions on top. It came with a side of rice, plantains two ways (fried tostones and sweet maduro), and beans. Everything was cooked well and tasted great! Nice attention to presentation too!
