Listen up. This is without a doubt the best BBQ in CA. We've had a lot of incredible BBQ over the years, from MOOs, to SLAB, to SNOWs and Blacks in Texas. We originally found Cuckoos through a friend when they were working out of a garage up a long driveway hidden in the mountains. The whole crew was super friendly and while we were picking up our order (online pre-order at the time) they offered some samples of their homemade beer and burnt ends. We couldn't be more stoked that they have now located to a more official spot at 14 Cannons in Westlake. We had an amazing time hanging out and catching up with the team tonight. Some of the best Baby Back Ribs I've had in years that were served to me when they were at 14 Canons Brewery. HOWEVER -- they have moved as of Jan. 2026 and are now at a wine and fancy cocktails bar in Thousand Oaks which doesn't quite feel like the right fit. This BBQ just begs to be served with home brewed beer. Let's hope they resurface someone else as I would eat hear weekly if they found the right spot. read more

We ordered the brisket and the ribs and were very impressed by both of them. They were cooked with a very tasty rub with plentiful choices of barbecue sauces for people who wish to add that (both of us felt the meat has cooked needed. No additional flavoring with barbecue sauce or anything else). We will most definitely go back; we do not claim to be experts in barbecue, but we thought it was great. We got there early and were lucky enough for the owner to let us try a couple of burnt ends of the brisket (not on the menu) which, at least in our opinion, were not burnt, but were very flavorful. They are located in the brewery 14 Cannons off Via Colinas in Westlake Village, which can be a challenge to find, but it is well worth putting in the effort. For some reason, yelp is not allowing me to check service and ambience, but both of those were great great as well. read more

These folks are and the BBQ is serious stuff. The brisket has a killer smoke ring and the perfect amount of rub & salt. Gently falls apart. The pulled pork is excellent - not drowned I sauce and it's vinegar based - really compliments the meat. The slaw is also excellent- so fresh and delicious. Not a mayo based dressing, a fantastic peanut slaw, so a heads up. The BBQ beans arent' sweet at all - they're much more like chili than traditional "baked beans", and very sauced. I prefer brown sugar based beans, but I am coming back for that slaw and to try the rest of the menu. This is up there with Market City, Bludso's and SLAB. read more

We ate lunch at 14 Cannons today after my wife was there for a blood donation this week. The beer was great and so many flavors and choices. The barbecue was as good as we have ever had. The meat is of the finest quality ,significantly better than super market cuts. The taste was amazingly good. We had brisket, ribs, pulled pork, amazing flavor and so tender. I might have had some similarly excellent in Austin,TX and I recall one place outside of downtown L.A. that was up there, but nothing exists between Santa Maria and Hollywood on this level it's inside of 14 Cannons Brewery in Westlake Village which is also excellent! BTW, incredible cole slaw, house made pickled veggies and house made bbq sauces, brisket was great and didn't try the beans or chicken yet but next time. Absolutely delicious! Westlake was in need of some good barbecue and Cuckoos Nest has delivered. Conveniently located at one of my favorite hangouts, 14 Cannons Brewery, and cooked fresh by a very friendly chef, who offered several free samples while we were there. I ordered the 1/2 lb brisket which came with bbq sauce, white bread and pickles. The meat is so tender and flavorful and very filling. Central Texas has arrived in Westlake Village. After having the brisket at Franklin Barbecue and Louie Meuller's, legends in Texas offering what is considered to be among the best brisket in the US, on multiple occasions, I found the brisket at Cuckoo's Nest to be equally on par. This is the best brisket I have found in LA and Ventura counties hands down. The sides weren't too shabby either. Not sure where to start since I've never had a BBQ experience quite like this one. We tried the ribs, brisket, chicken, beans, cole slaw, and a special fun touch of local roasted salted nuts for a snack to pick on, which the chef brought over as a sample :) The ribs were perfectly cooked, excellent quality and the seasoning was pure perfection. I enjoy BBQ and I'm not one to judge a book by its cover, been to joints all over the USA and in all sorts of places. This is the best BBQ, no search required, saving you the trouble of having to even try to compare anywhere else to cuckoos. The level of trimming, meat selection, and seasoning that you can taste from the first bite, you'll only get that at cuckoos nest. They go above and beyond. You'll find the best of the best here. Next level BBQ!! I found Cuckoos Nest on Yelp and decided to use them for a 7/4 party. We ordered pork ribs, brisket, chicken, bbq beans and coleslaw. Everyone commented that everything was the best bbq they had ever had. Meat was perfectly seasoned and "falling off the bone" tender. No carving required. Traditional homemade tomato base and mustard based (Calabasas Gold) bbq sauces were provided. Jesse (the owner) gave us great advice on how much to order. Wow, I don't know how I got so lucky to find this secret gem tucked away in the canyon, but I am so grateful for it! I was looking for some BBQ Super Bowl weekend and this showed up in my search. I made an order on their website for Super Bowl specials, drove up the next day, and showed up to find a beautiful pop up with a nice outdoor setting, huge smokers, and the nicest people. The whole operation looked like a labor of love because you can feel how the people running it care about what they're doing, who they're serving, and making damn sure they do it well. By far, the best barbecue experience on this side of town. Preordering was easy, and the vibe when you get there is laid-back, inviting, and warm. The giant smokers running next to the driveway, plus all the seasoned oak sitting ready to go, indicate just how legit this place is. The brisket is Texas-style, salt and pepper rub only, with a bark and a melts tenderness that is just perfection. Jesse was very thoughtful to respond by Instagram & email, then phone, to help me with my order. On Thanksgiving morning, I picked up the cooked items. Everything was vacuum sealed & easy to reheat. My family enjoyed every morsel that there was hardly any leftovers! The brisket was tender & had just the right amount of fat. Well I don't think I can use enough superlatives to describe the food and hosts. Jessie and Pam are seriously too nice to be real. They make you feel at home and appreciated while delivering the best brisket and rice and beans. Everything is fabulous but those are my favorites for sure. Ok where do I start. Jesse @ Cuckoos Nest is a real master of his craft. I ordered a big load of stuff for a poker night at my house and my guests and I were floored at the quality and flavor of this BBQ. Most of my guests didn't even want to use the BBQ sauce as the meat was so juicy and flavorful! The sides were delicious as well, with such attention to detail. We were given 6 different sauces, additional toppings for the mashed potatoes, delicious homemade pickles... I mean c'mon Jesse!! He even had the food delivered at the time I requested by a lovely family member. Just really made us feel special and appreciated, along with delivering an incredible, generous meal. I'm from Texas. I know good BBQ and I know bad BBQ. There's a lot of mediocre BBQ out here in California. Cuckoos Nest has my stamp of approval, if it means anything as a Texan raised on BBQ dinners. Last weekend Jesse fed some of the best BBQ to me and seven of my closest friends spur of the moment. Man didn't blink taking a large party last minute. He was welcoming, funny, and generous.
