Came here at 11:30 and was surprised that they weren't open yet. At closer to 11:45 I was thinking, this isn't customer service. After I placed my order and waited for the kitchen to warm up I was convinced that they had no care in the world about serving the customer. This was designed to be a job. During the entire first half of the dining experience, the waitress was brusk or even sullen. Little to no attempts to interact with us until it was time to pay the bill. I would give the overall service of the place a 1-star. I ordered the combination burrito. It had basically everything on it. It filled me up and why not exactly tasty, it was as standard a fare as I could hope for in this remote spot. Standard Tex-Mex and warm. Rates right in the middle if all you aspire to is "sustenance." There's not a lot of options in Ft. Davis but I think I'll explore a lot of others around before I reattempt this. It's worth spinning the wheel of chance rather than return to a very sub-par service experience. read more

My boyfriend & I stopped here on the way to Marfa, Tx and did not regret it! The service was awesome, we were able to sit down and figure out what we wanted with a respectful amount of contact from the server. He was patient and attentive which is something we all look for going to restaurants. The restaurant itself was clean and well decorated without being overwhelming. I really liked the little hats everywhere, super cute! The food was really well seasoned. I got something simple (chicken quesadillas) and the chicken had a really good flavor to it and it wasn't dry at all. My partner got tacos & he liked them. We went simple and it was flavorful. Me and my family were in Fort Davis and there aren't many restaurants so we came here because it was the only one open. It we stood there for two minutes before we realize it was self seating. It took almost 30 minutes to get our orders taken. 1.5 hours later we finally got our food. I ordered the chicken fajita nachos and got a chicken quesadilla. The meat was dry and I almost threw up. We got sick eating here. We stopped into the establishment on Saturday, August 3rd, I ordered the shredded chicken quesadilla, my kids ordered the enchilada plate and the bean burrito kids meal. The chicken they used in the quesadilla was rotten, soggy, and smelt like a warm bag of trash. The bean burrito was far too spicy for my 10 year old child to eat. The cheese enchiladas were previously frozen and reheated (part of the plate was freezer burned). The atmosphere was awful, there were only children working here the dining room was swarming with flies and was unsanitary. After consuming a small amount of the food, everyone felt ill the rest of the day ( it ruined our trip to the McDonalds conservatory). From the time we walked through the door, until we got our food it took 42 minutes. The food was cold, greasy and the taco meat had been reheated so many times, it was black and crunchy. Not once were we able to get a refill on our drinks. I have been eating here since 1983 and looked forward to eating here every time I return to FD. Unfortunately, I will not eat here again. Early afternoon visit, chose this place based number of cars in parking lot and reviews. Seated quickly, water, chips and salsa came quickly, but ordering took awhile. Seems waiter and cashier is the same person, and we got here when a good number of folks were leaving. We did have two people apologize for the wait, so at least they knew what was happening. Chips were decent, salsa had slight kick.. We ordered chicken and cheese enchildas, chili relleno, enchirito and quesadillas. Chicken enchiladas were great, chili relleno was excellent, quesadillas were very dry (recommend you pass), enchirito was very large but beef stuffing was not very flavorful. Overall, a solid 3.5 stars, but not a 4 star, so as you can't give half stars, three stars it is. read more

We stopped because there were several cars in the parking lot and they were fairly busy. This was not a good experience for us. They did seem understaffed as I did not see another waitress except for ours in the entire restaurant. She was VERY busy. The entire place was dirty. You could tell it was a build up over time, not just from a busy lunch rush. The bathrooms made you feel unclean after washing your hands. The food was average at best. My beef and cheese nachos were very dry. My wife's burrito was better. I'm not sure if this is the norm for this restaurant, but I plan not to return. read more

This was our 2nd time to try this restaurant (the first was a couple of years ago). The first time the food was bad and we said we would not return, but there wasn't anywhere else in town open mid-day (late) lunch, so what could we do with 3 hungry boys to feed. The place either doesn't have AC or it wasn't running either time we visited this establishment; everyone was hot and uncomfortable. After ordering we heard people complaining about how long they had been there. We didn't think much of it since there were people eating. After 45 mins they finally started bringing out the food, 1 dish at a time (with time gaps between). Finally after they brought out 4 of the 5 meals, they seemed to have forgotten the last grandson. They brought out chicken strips (which he had ordered) and right before sitting it down, said, "Oh, that's not for you" and walked away - WITH THE FOOD. When we asked why they would do that, we were told it was for another table. Everyone was near finished when they finally brought out his meal. Based on the way were served, it appeared the person cooking the meals can only handle one order at a time. When we complained about the service, the waitress said it was not her fault, it was the people in the kitchen and she couldn't do anything about them. The food was terrible. Because the fajita's were so bad the first time we were there, we tried chicken fried steak, hamburgers, and nachos. None of it was finished. I would NOT return again and I would not recommend - either eat before 1 or 2 in the afternoon (before everyone closes in this town), bring food with you so you don't have to stop here, or go down to the Family Dollar and get snacks until something else opens. read more

I get it--you're in the middle of nowhere and you may not have access to good quality ingredients and aren't used to feeding snooty crowds of food critics. But I believe that restaurants should only exist if the person going into the food service industry is actually passionate about food. What I ate here today was garbage. Utter garbage. It actually reminded me of the terrible tasting school lunches that cost a dollar in elementary school. There was zero effort put into preparing any of it. Not only that, but if you choose to work in a restaurant, you should know a thing or two about customer service. Even if you aren't by nature a friendly person, you should know how to say to be polite. We were told to sit anywhere we wanted, which we did, but as soon as we sat down, before we even had a chance to even look at our menus, the waitress tried to take our order. We obviously weren't ready yet, so she left to give us some time--and I don't know if it was on purpose or what--but she didn't come back for quite some time, a ridiculous amount of time which is why it felt intentional, as if she was giving us attitude for not being ready when she came by the first time. When she did come by and we ordered (my boyfriend ordered a burrito and I ordered an enchilada and a taco), she simply scribbled on her pad, turned around and disappeared. She came back with the food sometime later, and when I asked for green sauce/salsa verde, she said that my meal already came with it. I said no, I meant an extra side of green sauce (my favorite) if you have it, or some other type of sauce for my taco. She came by with a bowl of their super salty and weirdly creamy enchilada sauce, which yes, was already on my plate poured on top of my enchilada and was not what I wanted to put on my taco. I finished my enchilada--which was just your generic zero flavor or spices or anything impressive ground beef--and peeked into my taco. Same thing, just blah ground beef, with the tortilla covered with a thick unappetizing layer of cheese I had to peel off and put aside, and realized that, to manage to get this down, I would need to put something on my taco to flavor it up a little. She came by one more time to ask how we were doing, and I opened my mouth to ask for hot sauce, but she had turned around and left already. I called out "excuse me" several times but she did not hear or acknowledge. Another girl later came by and I asked her for hot sauce. She grabbed our little empty bowl of salsa which was given to us with chips when we sat down and was going to refill it. I'd already seen on the menu that a refill of that wasn't free, and I also didn't want more of their mild salsa, so generic-tasting that it probably came in a 5 gallon jug from a wholesale store. I said, "sorry, no, not salsa, but hot sauce for my taco. Do you have any?" She looked at me like she was offended and just stood there, blinking. I decided to clarify and said, "You know, something spicy?" She looked confused again and then said, "No, this is all we have." I said, "Nevermind then, thanks" and ate the saddest taco I've ever had since first grade school lunches before I started bringing my own sack lunch. (I mean, seriously, a Mexican place with no hot sauces? Okay, you don't make your own, but at least buy some Tapatio or Cholula for the table, please) Then it was time to pay, and when no one came by, we set our credit cards on the edge of the table. Still no one, so my boyfriend asked if we have to go up front to pay. They said yes, so we went up to do so. The impolite lady who walked off before I could answer her question earlier was terse and inhospitable, so I thought maybe a decent tip would make her day. My boyfriend and I both tipped well, but she looked at our tip amount on the receipt, crumpled the receipts, and said nothing. I guess I didn't expect anything but it was weird not getting a "thank you." I thought I'd at least get a "thanks, come again" as we left, but when I said, "thank you, have a nice day," I got nothing. I called out "bye" at the door again and got no response, no acknowledgement of any kind. I came in hoping for a pleasant experience and a Mexican grandmother's type of meal. If I could give this restaurant NEGATIVE stars, I would. It is quite possibly the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in my ENTIRE life. I am not the kind of person to exaggerate and I worked in the food industry for 5 years. I am a very understanding person, but this was horrendous from start to finish. The other reviews seemed hit or miss- some raved and some warned us not to eat here. We should have listened to the warnings. It was the only restaurant open and we had just driven up from a few hours away to visit the observatory. We came in at about 4 pm. Late for lunch, early for dinner. Not exactly rush hour. Even though the place was not busy at all, there were still dirty tables everywhere and no one came to greet us for about 15 minutes. We tried to flag someone down but we were blatantly ignored. Finally I asked a different server about seating and she said to sit anywhere. We found a clean table (one of the only ones) and waited some more. After another 10 minutes we were finally brought menus and someone takes our drink orders. Fast forward ANOTHER 10 minutes and we finally got our drinks and our server took our order. After trying to push the buffet on us repeatedly, she eventually took our orders for the plates we wanted. My fiancé and I ordered onion rings as an appetizer because we were so hungry and figured that since they were fried, that maybe they would come out quickly. WRONG. They arrived after 40 minutes- about 5 minutes before our entrees. Once we received our entrees we noticed they were missing the queso and guacamole promised in the menu. We asked for it and waited and waited until they brought it out. We were already about half way through our meals. The food itself was not very good, and in general did not have a good flavor. The flautas that come in the combination plates are the kind you can buy frozen in bulk from Walmart, Sams, or Costco. Taco shells were stale. Speaking of which.... My plate also came with a taco ( I ordered a combination plate) and when I looked inside, I saw lettuce, tomato, cheese, and NO MEAT! I asked TWICE for a new taco and each time my request was ignored. A friend of mine also asked for some chopped onions for his enchiladas and when he got them, they were contaminated with small pieces of tomato and bell pepper as well, which means they do not clean their cutting boards or rinse their knives. Not a huge deal in our case, but dangerous for anyone with food allergies. This is a violation of health codes and needs to be addressed immediately. The entire time we were here, we also did not receive any refills or napkins even though we asked. The wall by the cash register is covered in awards and newspaper articles featuring the restaurant. You can tell that at one point in time (probably about 5-10 years ago) this place might have been really good. However, the staff just seemed not to care and the kitchen seemed slow and dirty. There were also flies EVERYWHERE. Unfortunately as a tourist you do not always have a choice in where you eat, especially in very small towns such as Fort Davis where many of the restaurants are closed. My advice is to plan ahead and pack your own lunch. I would have rather eaten some sandwiches and chips and fruit from home than at this restaurant a million times over. read more

The service was attentive, but it took a while for the order to come out (40 mins or so, but after the hike, we were glad to just sit for a while!), presumably because this place filled up fast. This is your typical mom and pop place that you search for and hope is good. We ordered two plates and one was good and one was not. The Cueva special was good. It came with 2 tacos, a chille relleno and a chicken enchilada. All was good. Guac, salsa and cheese dip was all tasty. The Fajita beef nachos had a strange flavor. I don't know if it's the way they seasoned the beef but I could not eat it. We would try this place again and get something different....maybe chicken. Now the restaurant has been open for a long time but no upgrades have been made and the quality of the food has gone downhill but the prices have gone up. Which with everything else we expect it but the restaurant needs a good upkeep cause we ( my husband and I and 3 more customers saw a little mouse just run across the floor from the wall of the bathroom to the counter where you pay. Fort Davis is a tough place to find dinner! Several places are only open through lunch. Out of desperation, we went to Cueva de Leon. Taco Bell is better (and it's a lame excuse for Mexican food).
