My brother took me here when I was 21 to meet a friend of his that's been a regular for years. My first foray into the world of "tavern." It was a cool place. Not loud, but loud enough. Met interesting people. The place is small, so just by being there you're almost inclined to interact with everyone there (a little bit). The bartender played records behind the bar! It was kinda like when Boone and Pinto went to Donald Sutherland's place in "Animal House". The definition of a neighborhood bar where you feel welcome and at home. It is always so cozy in there and the ambiance is so comforting and open. It doesn't feel like a place where you are judged no matter what you order, and even if you suck at pool the denizens are patient enough to give your pitiful attempts gentle pointers and even amused applause from time to time. read more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bar. It helps for me that it's a half a block from where I work and three blocks from my apartment ("stumblin' distance", if you will) but I would adore it even if that weren't so. John, the bartender (bald guy with an awesome goatee), is great to chat with. He has a great music collection stashed away over there. There's nothing like listening to The White Stripes while shooting some pool with your friends. Good beer too! They have specials that go on during the week days, $1 "snacks" (bags of chips and nuts), and delivery menus available if you want. The atmosphere is great. Dark, close-quarters. The kind of thing you want in a dive bar. They also have some great board games and good group tables so you can invite your buddies. read more

I'm giving five stars because for me, Cuneen's really embodies that "pub" feeling. I'm not talking Union Jacks on the walls or even soccer games on the TV or Guinness on tap--I'm talking the chilled out vibes, dim lights, and unimpressed bartenders. I go here once a week with a group of friends and we bring our own peanuts, drink, and have a ball. They also have free wi-fi for customers, if laptops 'n' beer is your thing, and my husband says he is always impressed by the songs playing. read more

Ahhhh Cuneen's.... I recently discovered this little gem. If you are looking for a bar to go to and have a crazy night out with your friends, go somewhere else. Every time I have visited it has been dark, quiet, and pretty much empty. Decent beer selection, super friendly and talkative bartenders (John is the best). Let me tell you something about this place. It's a Pub and it's as real as it gets when you want that Pub feeling. Good feeling all around. I once brought a date here one night and I got to listen to some classic records... yes records. Ol' Boy behind the bar was playing some good stuff too. Nothing like that Vinyl sound. You got a Pool Table there and some Books, Boardgames, awesome tables by the window when available. Cuneen's has an extra special quality. I wouldn't call it a dive. It's kind of like the Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap of the North. You are just as likely to run into philosophy grad students discussing Chomsky or Rorty or whoever the heck it is they discuss these days as you are some old dude from the neighborhood talking about his bursitis. Cunneen's is the best kind of neighborhood bar, in my opinion. Colleen has been working most nights I've been there, and she's wonderful. I wouldn't necessarily call this place a dive, but it definitely feels untouched by modern entertainment standards, and it's a place I feel at ease and at home..but not at home, which is exactly what I want in my bar. read more

Some of the reviews are so true. It takes you back to the era of the first Mayor Daley and has that neighborhood bar feel like almost no other. The bartenders will likely act uninterested in your presence, but if you take the time to stick around they'll warm up. It's cash only, but really cheap. You can generally get a shot and a beer for $5. They also have an interesting selection of beers, some priced higher than others, but still very reasonable compared to most bars. You should check out this gem if you're in the neighborhood. read more

If you want to get drunk for a small amount of money without walking very far or having to worry about too many people or eating any food or dealing with loud music, this is the place. It is smoky and dive-y and the bartender and patrons are not too nice or too mean. No frills, though there is a pool table. Perfect for a stop over on your way to the red line or Andersonville to go somewhere more fun. Winter months will find me there because it is the closest place to go for me. When I walked in, I thought I'd stumbled into the Alibi Room from "Shameless", and I mean that in the greatest way possible. It was a cool DIIIIIIIVE (which oddly enough still has a phone booth!) but then the hipsters came out. oooh, the hipsters. One of my favorite bars anywhere. A decent-to-sometimes very good playlist of old music, an unpretentious clientele, homey wooden interiors and nice prices. I have an image of an old, slower Chicago in my head and Cunneens is it. I've had more pleasant conversations with locals here than any other place in my native Lincoln Park. read more

I love this place and miss it so much since I moved. Met some good friends who I still keep in touch with. Love that you can bring in dogs and love, love, love the pool table. Love that it's not overwhelming and love the nearby places to eat. La Unica and Ghareeb Nawaz and delivery to Cunneens is the best. I have really only been here a few times but for the most it's a average dive bar. There is nothing species about there drinks or service. Also bars that do not serve any type of food to me should not exist in today's world of roster ovens. I feel they could do a lot more with what they have. Some effort and better beer selection would be nice. read more

A neighborhood bar that's actually in my neighborhood, but it took me a few months before I actually ended up here with some friends/colleagues as a result of a cocktail-party induced desire to keep drinking. The music sucks, and if it didn't, this place would probably be worth going to more often. This is actually the type of bar that I tend to like the best - a place where you can sit down with your group and not be bothered or thrown up on by anyone else. It seems like the kind of place with a semi-regular clientele, where if you went there more than a few times, the bartenders would likely know your drink order. That probably isn't going to happen with me any time soon, though. Maybe if they had a jukebox (and a better draft beer selection). Then I'd be all about it. After three pitchers, though, I mean, the music (and, frankly, the quality of the beer) becomes a bit less of an issue. BEER LOL read more

Go for the friendly atmosphere and nice people. On the other hand, don't go for the crowded, noisy, cramped nature of the bar itself.

I've only been to Cuneens on holiday weekends. Tonight was no exception. First time--- St. Patricks Day. I stumbled in there with my friends and boyfriend/his friends and realized it was cash only. No cash on me, Still, I couldn't help but fall in love with how vintage it looked. It was like stepping into a time portal and pressing Year 1940. There are always characters sitting in the windows, there's a huge Mayor Daley clock AND there's really good music. Good variety that keeps you on your toes and attuned. Second time.... Cinco de Mayo. Decided to skip the Cinco de Bro-yo parties in Wrigleyvlle and stay in the neighborhood. Went inside and asked for margaritas. Their blender [from 1945?] was broken. We had them on the rocks, that's cool too. The bartender kept asking if mine was OK and then offered me another drink instead. He's a really nice guy that is attentive but not overbearing. He doesn't talk to you unless you talk to him and makes sure to give you enough space. Third time... Labor Day weekend. Had a good time ;looking at the great ambiance of the place. There's a pool table, great signs ("thank you for pot smoking") and an original electric cash register. read more

Gotta love this dark dive on Devon. The drinks are reasonable and the church pew seats give it unique charm. No matter what day of the week there is a decent set of regulars at the bar or shooting pool. There is one bartender who isn't quite as nice as the others - and so I refer to her as Salty Sally (don't know her real name). One downside is that it's cash only, but getting a pint of Sierra Nevada or Berghoff Dark on draft is worth carrying the paper. And a pizza guy will make his rounds toward the end of the night to offer up hot yet cheap pizza. The size is just right for the lighting and feeling. They have free Wifi as well, I believe. If you're near the Rogers Park/Edgewater area, I definitely recommend grabbing a quick drink with a few friends here. read more

I love this little corner bar. Friendly and cool.

I tend towards dive bars, admittedly, and this is about as good as they come. $10 pitchers of Berghoff's Dark every day, $0.50 pool games, most beers priced at $4, fairly comfy seats, friendly patrons, dog-friendly, music on vinyl (and good music, too, last time I was in they were playing Elvis Costello) and, for the most part, interesting, speedy and friendly bartenders. That blonde bartender pretty much hates anyone under the age of 55, so college folks - beware the cold shoulder. Some of the regulars are awesome, and will gladly bet a beer on a game of pool (but they'll probably kick your a**). I've never been starved for entertainment or conversation here. One of the regulars has his dog in most every weeknight, and though I am allergic and don't like dogs much, he's never been a problem and is really sweet and well-behaved. Yeah, Cunneen's smells weird, probably left over from pre-smoking ban days. You can actually smell it even as you walk by - but if you make this your regular place, like I have, that smell will endear itself to you and you will come to love it just like you love the smell of your grandparents' home. However, it's a winter and fall kind of place, since there's no outdoor seating. There are better bars for the summertime in this neighborhood, but you can't beat walking a half a block if you just want a cold beer and a relaxing half hour . Not too many college kids, except the occasional group of hipsters on a Fri/Sat night, and they're usually just soaking up the chill vibe too. One warning - Cunneen's doesn't take plastic, and ask a bartender if they do, and they may simply laugh in your face. read more

spent a night there with my husband where we watched the whole eric clapton tribute concert on PBS with the bartender. spent a new years there with friends and felt blessed that they are so kind and did not kick us out when one of our party stood on their bar pews. i love cuneen's because i can walk there from my house, get a berghoff dark for cheap on tap, sit at a church pew and drink, play pool, and sit and read comics while i pee since they are posted on the back of the stall door. nevermind that the stall door is hitting your knee as you pee. :) this place is a clean and friendly dive and a great RP/edgewater place to duck into on a quiet afternoon or night. read more

Cunneen's is a great local dive. It's full of characters. It has wi-fi. The booze is cheap. I like hanging out here. My only problem is that it's cash only, and I don't carry cash that often so I don't often go there. But when I go, I'm always happy I did. read more
