Went to the cupboard restaurant last night for a quick bite while I was in Midtown. The food and the service was fantastic. Definitely plan on returning soon. The fried chicken fingers with honey mustard dressing were out of this world. Also, loved the scratch mashed potatoes and gravy!! read more

My wife and I try to visit this place at least once every couple weeks. We have literally never had a bad experience here. The food is consistently good, and so is the service. We usually ask for Evelyn if we see her name on the paper at the hostess stand, but tonight we didn't see it on there and ended up with another waitress. Whoever is in charge of this page, please tell Mrs. Evelyn we are sorry and we promise we will make it up to her next time. Still, the (Russian?) lady who took care of us did a great job. I'm not huge on the "down home southern cooking" because regardless of what kind of restaurant holds that kind of title. It always seems to be fitting of the "greasy and unhealthy" connotation. There are a few things you can order to stick to the lighter foods, but not a great deal. read more

It's ok. Tastes like home cooked for the most part. This is the only place I know of that does fried green tomatoes like my Mamaw used to however they came out with half a tank of grease!!! Couldn't enjoy them because they weren't blotted at all! Also, please buy REAL BUTTER! Fake butter stinks. read more

Just had dinner at the Cupboard. Many years ago, they were really good. Now, not so much. It's like they open cans of veggies and warm them up and slop 'em on the plate. Bland and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were soupy. I had the chicken fried steak and it was like a tv dinner entree. Simply not good. read more

A great southern feast!!! Best chicken strips I've had in a long time...maybe ever. Whoever heard of corn pudding and eggplant casserole being vegetable choices on a plate lunch?? I think I've given up on The Cupboard. Out of my last three visits 2 were so-so and 1 was good. The good one was for dinner last Friday. Kiki was our server. She is a grandmotherly type and she is fantastic. The other two were not so good. We were there for dinner and the server was good but took to long to serve us. The bus fellow actually gave better service. Brought our drinks and cornbread/rolls. By the time we got our food is was good but it had set in the pass to long. Today's visit has been the worse. The host only said 5 words..."how many" and "table or booth". He has been there every time and never says more. The last time he was too busy watching the T.V. near the front door. Once seated the server didn't say anything but "what do we want to drink". Tea and lemon. She brought the tea, no lemon. We gave her our order and we asked for cornbread and rolls and she acted surprised. Usually the bring them quickly but she didn't bring them until after she brought our order. The food was lukewarm at best. My meat and three....the veggies were lukewarm but the meat was hot. There was an older group next to us and they had the same server and the same problems. When I went to pay, I didn't even get a "how was your meal" or "thank you". Cupboard you need to wake up. read more

My visit to this place was less than stellar!!!! Service was HORRIBLE!! wrong drinks more than once!! Saw other peoples food swapped from table to another !! 3 people at my table ordered chicken Not one could eat it, it was over cooked and very dry! They were out of several things on the menu. The one bright spot was the fried green tomatoes were excellent. In fact that was the one thing I found good enough to eat. My husband liked the baked apple! Ordered the chicken and dressing with a sweet potato, corn pudding and broccoli casserole. Chicken and dressing tasted old like mold had been growing in it, the sweet potato was over cooked and muddy in flavor. I usually like the corn pudding but tonight it was overly sweet and too much bead in it. The only decent thing was the broccoli casserole and rolls. Tried telling the waitress I couldn't eat it because it was not fit to eat, her response was to ask me if I wanted to box it up to take home. Dinner rolls and biscuits are the best I've had anywhere. Breakfast is consistently good, and although I'm not usually a fan of pancakes, they are worth ordering here. Delicious. I've also had the mashed potatoes, which were good. Spaghetti was surprisingly delicious. Green beans and macaroni and cheese weren't my favorites. We were out-of-state customers yet our 3rd time eating there. Horrible experience, the Server was extremely slow, her tone/voice was very loud and unnecessary. When I asked for a refill on coffee she loudly stated she had others to provide coffee to before me. We both ordered the Cavallo Special, the top of the biscuits were burnt and hard as a rock, the country fried steaks were well over cooked and hard. I asked for a side order of bacon and pecan pancakes. She became frustrated and loud once more to the point of embarrassment. People had stopped eating to hear her conversation. After all of that the pancakes were extremely thick, gummy and distasteful. We were charged extra for the Pecans in the horrible pancakes. Overall it was lousy service and a lousy breakfast for the high amount (over $30.00) we were charged. read more

This is my favorite go to place for every meal! The location is great and the food is consistently fresh, hot, and good. When I eat here it makes me feel like I'm back home at granny's house sitting on the back porch helping her pick through turnip greens and pick vegetables from the garden. The flavor of the food taste so much of how it did when Granny cooked and my tummy would rumble smelling it coming from the kitchen! Today I had the chicken & dressing with turnip greens (I always get) and sweet potato. The cranberry sauce (yum) and corn bread/rolls (I got both) were complimentary. Yes this was Sunday dinner for lunch on Thursday! The dressing is some of the best! Flavorful with a hint of sage not over powering with chicken that literally melts in your mouth. I washed it all down with sweet tea with lemon (of course) now at granny's it was double cola. I had enough to take home for dinner- what an enjoyable lunch. Don't tell hubby! read more

One of my all time fav's for Lunch. Home cooking southern style, with the freshest of vegetables. The corn bread muffins are incredible, be careful or you will eat the whole basket without thinking, they are truly addictive and should come with a warning label - "these muffins may be hazardous to your waistline".. My must haves on the menu are the eggplant casserole, turnip greens and corn pudding. The service is extremely prompt and I think most of the servers have been there for 20+ years (kind of like being served by you grandma). I was skeptical to go here since I was worried a southern restaurant wouldn't have good vegetarian and vegan options. I was wrong! I meat-eater friend ordered his favorites, eggplant casserole and turnip greens, both of which were really good, and I feasted on a veggie sampler platter, including greens, fried green tomatoes, field peas (similar to black eyed peas) and beets. Better yet - you get a basket of cornbread and biscuits. Can't go wrong. The service is friendly, the prices are super reasonable, and they have nice big booths to sit in. The ambiance is super casual and there's lots of elderly couples, which I suspect is a reason that their food is very low sodium. Great spot for dependable Southern food with the major difference being they offer a large selection of vegetables prepared with no meat. My kids love going here & getting just 3 vegetable plates.
