This place was very interesting to me. The look and vibe of it was very nice. It is a more upscale restaurant which is always nice for a special evening out. The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). Cozy little place located downtown. Went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too packed out. Since we had reservations, we were able to be sitted quickly. Waitress came over to introduce themselves and recommend us starters & drinks for the evening. Starters & Drinks: I ordered the Caesar salad & my man got the goat cheese salad. He ordered a blackberry smash while I got sprakling Pear. Took the waitress some time to come back over so we can order our main course. Took another 30-35 mins for the entrees to come out. The BBQ duck confit enchiladas were an amazing appetizer, the grilled beef tenderloin and the ribeye was cooked perfectly and so flavorful, and McEwen's Famous Banana Cream Pie was the highlight of the meal! It was so yummy and the perfect ending to dinner. The service was friendly and attentive and the entire experience made for a wonderful date night. We can't wait to come back! The service tonight was stand out! We sat at a high top and I wish I had remembered our servers name the recipe reads PMS... She was wonderful and well versed as well as enthusiastic about the food. Our meal was so fresh. We each started with a salad. A wedge, a Cesar and the McEwens house, sans cucumbers! Very fresh and each unique and amazing! Ambiance was laid back and chill and not too busy. Very clean. Our meals came out fresh and warm without a long wait. I had the amazing sweet potato catfish with greens and Mac n cheese, it was excellent. My daughter had the baked chicken with rice and green beans and my guy had the sea bass! We finished the night with the bread pudding! I went there for lunch. The cabbage and bacon soup was a special. It had potential, but needed more seasoning. I ordered the Grilled Atlanta Salmon lunch special. It was seasoned with miso and pecan glaze, which was delicious. I got fried okra and mashed potatoes as the side. I got water as my drink and it was the most foul tasting tap water that I have every tried in my life. The service was just ok. The server, Grace, seemed to be more warm & friendly to everyone else in the building. I had to ask for a straw and for some reason they only have Cholula hot sauce, but no other hot sauce's like Texas Pete or Crystal Hot Sauce. We spent time in Memphis in October. We wanted a special place to celebrate and found McEwen's. It is such a cozy and welcoming place. The staff was great. Friendly, engaging and efficient. Bert, one of the owners was amazing. He made us feel like part of the family. The food was also incredible. My husband had wanted a steak for his birthday and he got a great one. Out of towner here for business. Tried McEwens downtown on a Saturday night. 5:30 PM and restaurant was empty. We sat down and were great by our server who was friendly and took our drink order and quickly returned with our drinks. We ordered appetizers of Baked Brie and Short-rib Pasta. The baked brie was very good, warm and soft inside a crispy puff pastry. Served w crostini, blueberry compote, honey and arugula! Altogether in one bite it was delicious. All the different flavors complimented the brie!! The Short-rib Pasta was very good! House made pasta shaped the size of a nickel. The short-rib and the sauce/reduction coated the pasta. Perfectly cooked fall apart short-rib chunks were plentiful. My main course was Redfish over Polenta with charred broccolini! I almost always get Redfish when I can since the west coast rarely has redfish. The sauce was a light garlic and crab cream sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly and the silky sauce was a great addition to the fish and polenta! The interior is bistro style in a brick walled building!! Right now I'd consider this to be the best meal I've ever had - Sam for my wife. We had a fried geeen tomato special (10/10), I had a Parmesan encrusted catfish special (9/10) and she had the short rib pasta (9/10). The bannan Creme pie was 10/10. We were seated in a large room which was able to handle the 40+ of us attending. Our offering of food was limited to fish, chicken, vegetarian and meat. This cute little spot in downtown Memphis was a great place to stop for dinner. I got the Angst Hemingway cocktail which was really delicious. For my meal, the grilled tenderloin with potatoes and asparagus was good. The potatoes and asparagus were well prepared. The beef was just a little undersalted, in my opinion and the demiglace needed a little more seasoning as well. I finished with the banana cream pie which was also lacking a bit in the flavor department. Perfection! Beautiful, elegant menu infused with cozy southern charm. Everything you could hope for in Memphian fine dining. Under a 5 minute walk to the Peabody where you can grab a drink before or after! The space is beautiful. We sat in the new space, with a cozy brick interior with some really cool artwork and soft lighting. Great staff full of inviting, friendly faces who clearly know their stuff. We were even greeted by one of the owners, John, who made time for us and was a gracious host! Our server, Travis, was warm, inviting and a true pro, answering every question, dad joke or request with good humor, special attention and generosity. He also plainly knew his way around the menu and even the extensive drinks list. We are usually wine people (a department we were not dissapointed in) but the bourbon list here is amazing! I'd need a few decades worth of expertise to truly appreciate it, but noticed at least a couple of unicorns on there that don't often get the chance to cross state lines. The Paper Plane cocktail was like few I have had. A skillful balance of flavors that featured the whiskey rather than altering or covering it up. As for the food, everything was delectable. The purple hull pea hummus was very tasty (capers!) as was the fried green tomato special to start. The Blackened Redfish, holy moly. Cooked to buttery perfection. And the corn salad, green beans and rice were not just garnishes! Everything on the plate was deliciousness complimented with thoughtful, delectable detail work. One of our party ordered the Trust Me Vegtarian Plate and even the most carnivorous members of the table were envious! Nothing is treated as a second thought here. The brownie and banana creme pie were the mouthwatering cherry on top of it all. No wonder people keep coming back. Top notch dining experience! Highly recommend. Really glad we found this place while we were in town. Since we were on a little vacation we definitely took the approach of trying a bunch of stuff. Started off with the special Fried Green tomato's. They were topped with some crab slaw which was ok but since I don't love crab I would have just been happy with the tomatoes alone. We each got a different salad (peach and goat cheese & a feta with dried cherries one) and both were great! I could have just eaten the peach and goat cheese one as a meal (if it was slightly bigger; the menu says pear but I swear they were peaches). For mains we did the ribeye and tenderloin. Both were good. There were also a LOT of fish options but since we live on the gulf coast where we have a lot of fish options we passed on anything fish. Overall service and drinks were also good. The only small downside was the biscuits where I just wanted them to come out early vs with my main and I wanted a little bit of butter to go on them. read more

We visited McEwen's last minute, without ever planning to go there. Sometimes life has other plans for you, and you just got to roll with it. The Memphis Yelpies were held around the corner at the Hu Hotel. My CM has communication deficiencies, and I wasn't informed I "didn't make the cut" until 15 mins prior to the event starting. I tried to confirm through multiple channels to no avail. So, there I was in the lobby of the Hu, with my wife, all dressed up with nowhere to go. McEwens saved the day by being able to accommodate us immediately. This seems like an old school kind of place, and I had never been before, but I will be back. I loved the atmosphere and chill vibe I got here. Some of the aspects of dinner service are lost in my mind due to the emotions of being dissed and embarrassed at the Yelpies. I do remember the food though! Absolutely outstanding!!! We started with fried oysters. I liked them more than my wife did, which is unusual. She does like smaller oysters though, and these were pretty big. I dug they put them back in the shell, the presentation was great. Wedge salad was one of the best I've ever had. Dressing was delightful! Very well put together and beautifully presented. Croutons were banging. Wifey ended up getting the enchiladas for dinner. You get two, she said they were more like taquitos, rather than enchiladas. We had significant debate about what is what in the Masa world. They were great nonetheless. High fucking five to the Chef, whatever they are. We both thought they were very well done. I had the Masa Encrusted Redfish. It had a great seafood étouffée base with rice. It could have been my whole meal, it was that good. It was spicy, velvety, full of seafood, pretty damn fire in its own. Green beans aren't my jam, I did try them though, and for a green bean, it was good. Fish was cooked perfectly. I really liked the slightly crunchy exterior created from the grilled masa. The seasoning was spot on and the fish was cooked to absolute perfection. I ate the whole damn plate (after I gave the GB to my wife), and literally scraped the bowl clean even though I was already full. We will return, without a doubt! Long day today and my wife was surprised and disappointed with the place we were staying. Well we were all disappointed, review to follow... So we wanted to take her somewhere nice. Quality/Quantity - Homemade biscuits. These were fresh out of the oven, so warm and fluffy, but can I suggest some soft salted butter...? Either way, they were perfect to use to soak up the sauce from the Osso Buco. Short Rib Pasta (Tapa Size) - Sorry, our least favorite. I could not imagine that the pasta was made in house...? At least it did not taste as it was. My daughter was able to taste both the truffle oil and parmesan. Overall, it was not bad, but still not special. Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass - My dish, and the hit of the table. Everyone enjoyed this. Too bad sea bass dishes always come as such a small piece, although I felt that this was a generous piece. Always, after sharing, there is usually not enough left for me... Grilled Salmon - This looked the best, best plated. But came in third place for us. Creole Spiced Braised Pork Osso Buco - I thought this would have been the favorite, but it came in second place. Generous portions. And the sauce was perfect for the biscuits. We even got seconds of the biscuits. Key Lime Pie - My daughter and wife really liked this. It was very sour, just the way they like it. Atmosphere - Good size elegant restaurant. 3 rooms, with the center/middle room having a full bar. Each room can be "sectioned" off for private/semi-private dining. The two unisex bathrooms have elegant decor also. I am told that there is also a wine cellar dining downstairs? Available for events up to 20 people. Metered street parking, we got a space right in front on a Tuesday evening. There were also nearby parking garages. They also had valet parking for $12. Service - Good. All the team members were nice, welcoming, and good. From the waitress and bus girl who kept refilling our water to the owner. All of them checked on us several times during our meal. I picked McEwen's for dinner on a quick stop in Memphis because of it's good Yelp rating and proximity to our hotel, and I was not disappointed. Wow, everything we had was delicious, the service was great, and the ambiance was nice. I recommend making a reservation as the main dining area was sold out with reservations, but we got there early enough to get in (~5:30). My wife had the goat cheese salad (which was very large and could easily have been shared) and I had a Brussel sprouts appetizer to start. Her salad was so good she ate the whole thing, which she never does. The Brussel sprouts came with caramelized pecans and crumbled goat cheese. It also was meant for sharing. A great choice if you like sprouts. My wife had the salmon. She is not a big fish-eater, but really enjoyed it. wonderfully seasoned and the asparagus that accompanied it was cooked perfectly. I had a Barramundi special that came with green beans and a cheesy polenta. The flavors of the fish and the polenta were AMAZING!! The green beans were a little underdone for my liking, but I'd rather that than overcooked. We shared a brownie sundae for dessert. The brownie was freshly-baked in-house and served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy... Wonderful dinner New Year's Eve! I had crab bisque, very creamy and tasty, followed by pan-seared halibut in lobster cream sauce with smoky broccolini and bacon leek polenta. I looked for top steakhouses in Memphis and this place kept popping up. Thankfully we were able to get reservations pretty quickly. When we got there I was worried that we were underdressed but the hostess was very nice and seated us immediately. The friendliness didn't end with her, the waitress came to the table immediately with water and started making drink and food recommendations. The wine recommendations and steak were amazing! The steak and asparagus were cooked to perfection and the glaze was a great touch. I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant. Everyone in my party had a great meal paired with phenomenal service. We were traveling from Ohio, walked right in and we're seated. I adored my old fashioned and the Halibut special was delicious. I am pescetarian and gluten free so I'm glad there was a special for me. My vegetarian friend was struggling a but but settled on grits and biscuits.
