I grew up in Memphis and moved to Denver 10 years ogo. I have missed that sothern hospitality and of course the food. I know southern cooking and this is it. And for those who would prefer to go a "little" healthier, The Cubbard has eliminated meat, bacon drippings or other animal fat in preparation of their delicious vegetable dishes but some how have kept that southern spin on simple food. I hate to give a negative review because this is a Memphis icon. I've always gone there before visiting the Memphis zoo. We went last week and we're disappointed. I got a veggie plate. The eggplant casserole and the squash casserole were indistinguishable- all breading! The black eyed peas tasted canned. The rolls and cornbread were on the edge of being stale. However, the spinach was delicious but not good enough to make up for the rest of the meal. I hope they improve the quality because I would hate to see them go! read more

Sadly, I was hoping for a decent lunch today. This wasn't the day however. After staying away for a few years, we decided to give it another shot. Not only was the food bland and tasteless, it was lukewarm at best. I ordered coffee to go with my meal and it was cold, I let it ride because it does happen. I just drank the water. Why is this place considered "home-cooking" when every vegetable comes out of the can? In my case, it was the lima beans and in my husband's, the field peas. The potatoes were instant and covered with an instant brown gravy mix, the chicken and dressing had some sort of a congealed greenish gravy on top and the rolls were cold. It's an old business that was good at one time, unfortunately that time has passed. Whomsoever owns it now should stand back, eat some real home-cooking and rethink the menu. This is a good place for some no frills breakfast and southern comfort food cooking. The staff are friendly and I love how cozy and quirky the decor is. Lots of family photos, signed photos of celebrities, paintings, and random interesting pictures on the wall to check out. My first visit, I ordered the Cavallo Special for breakfast which is country fried steak, 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, hash browns/home fries, and biscuits/toast. The country fried steak was well seasoned and tasty! Even if it is frozen. Second visit I decided to pick a lunch dish, which was their chicken fried chicken with brown gravy. You have the option to get white gravy as well. I picked 3 sides of mash potatoes, mac n cheese, and eggplant casserole. I thought the chicken fried chicken would taste just as good as the country fried steak I previously ordered, but unfortunately it was a bit on the bland side. I wasn't a fan of the eggplant casserole. The ritz crackers overpowered this side dish for me. Regardless of that meal, I would still come back and try out their other specials. I am a regular at the Cupboard Restaurant, so I would love to be the first to say that the food is just like momma's country cooking. I have had so unpleasant experiences at the cupboard, the food not tasting up to par or a mistake on their part, however I always bring it to the attention of one of the owners and/or the manager on duty. They always made it right and made me happy before I left. The owner stands by the motto of " If your not happy, He's not happy". People always make mistakes but I believe it is up to us to bring it to their attention and give them a chance to make it right, that will show the true character of a businesses reputation. This place is a joke. So unclean.. The booths, tables, silverware and cups. Yuck.. My husband had the fried fish it was not fully done. The sides were bland. I had breakfast.. This place was down the street from my hotel. Wanted a taste of some southern cooking. Went in Monday about 1pm. Place had many customers, but was seated promptly. Asked for the cornbread and was brought out as if it were fresh from the oven. I am disturbed about the other feedback about bread being reused. I hope mine wasn't or I would never come back. I ordered the Chicken fried chicken w milk gravy and the sides were Fresh eggplant casserole and fresh buttered squash. IMO the portion sizes of everything was just right. Fried chicken had just enough gravy and it was moist. Other places usually flood the chicken and I'm usually looking for it. Chicken was very good. Cannot complain about the sides, they were good. Ordered my sweet tea, and was promptly refilled when finished. Overall I was able to walk out of there without holding my belly. This was a simple meal. Nothing to brag about, just good. If you like BIG portions, go somewhere else. read more

I was not happy the first time but tried it again and learned my lesson the second time. Our food was warm but not hot and the rolls & tiny cornbread was cold. I was a bit disappointed. It's okay. First, there were a ton of "older" people, quite a few white-hairs and it also smelled like an old person's home. It wasn't bad, it just was. I did appreciate that it was not a chain and not a hipster "soul food" joint. I wish I had had my camera to take a picture of the beautifully ornately framed picture of Orson Wells with a bottle of Paul Masson wine. Come to think of it, it was decorated like an old person's house too. The waitress was very nice. The food was just okay. I was lookig forward to the eggplant casserole from a previous reviewers yelp, because I love eggplant casserole. This was more like eggplant dressing- way too much bread. The mac and cheese would have been good except the elbows were over cooked and the whole thing was too soft. I like some bite in my macaroni. The "Italian" spinach was tasty- cooked down to wicked green mush, like canned spinach but with a lot of garlic and parmesan so it was good. Greg got the field peas which were okay, the green tomatoes which were okay and the okra and tomatoes which were okay. The little mini cornbread muffins were good. We were too stuffed to eat our dessert so I cannot report on the lemon ice box pie and sweet potato pie we have in the fridge right now. I'm glad I went, it wasn't horrible, but I've had better at similar places in other towns. read more

If I could have given this place zero stars I would have. The food is atrocious. Everything is bland, cold or stale. The rolls and mini cornbread that were brought to the table at the beginning of the meal were both stale and cold. My husband had the catfish and it was under cooked. I ordered the grilled chicken breast. It arrived swimming in cold Italian dressing. Disgusting. The macaroni and cheese tasted of processed cheese instead of actual cheese. The only decent thing was the sweet tea, however, I never did get a refill because our waitress disappeared outside to smoke. When we went to pay our $40+ bill, we asked about the chicken breast and were told that "people around here know that's how it comes." Seriously? I've lived here for over 20 years and I've never heard of any such thing. Not to mention that it's not listed on the menu this way. This place has the opportunity to be really cool as there are not very many "home cooked meal" type places in the city. However, we will not be returning to this one. read more

oh cupboard, how i love thee! kiki, the 1996 employee of the year and STILL serving up an accent and a smile. the breadbasket with tiny, perfect cornbread muffins and cornbread sticks, butter rolls. the menu with everchanging mains and an array of sides. this is possibly the best meat'n'three southern style restaurant i've been to in a LONG time. what i ate: chicken fried chicken with milk gravy (perfect), fried green tomatoes (salty outside, crunch, perfect tomato inside), squash casserole (best i've ever had? bready, not too watery, lots of flavor) and corn pudding (mmmmm goodness). also tasted the collard greens, macaroni, and chicken fried steak. tip: dinner is slightly less crazy than lunch, so head over then if its an option read more

Don't go to this restaurant unless you have plenty of time to waste. We decided to try this restaurant one morning before a Tiger Game. It was very busy, but an hour is still too long to wait for breakfast. When it finally arrived, the biscuits were undercooked and the meal was not very good. We decided to try it again this morning, once again on our way to the Tiger Game. When we arrived the place was not even half full so we didn't anticipate a long wait. Twenty minutes after we ordered, we were told that a new crew had just arrived and food would be "flying out of the kitchen soon." Twenty five minutes later we asked again and were told that we were second in line on the "wheel." Forty five minutes after we had ordered and they had not even begun to cook our food. We told them to cancel the order because we would miss the game is we waited any longer. We asked for our check and they presented us will a bill for 3.98 for our coffee and we barely received an apology. We have officially crossed this restaurant off of our list. read more

1st Time Here during Memphis In May 2016, ordered an omelet. 1st one was served "brown eggs style flat" - sent back with specifics - second one "runny eggs with bottom portion not cooked. The food here is okay. You can get vegetables at a reasonable price that are not bad if not exactly delicious. My husband and I used to eat there frequently. We would bring our college aged children or our grandson sometimes. I have been eating off my husband's plate for years. He complains a little but not too much. He would usually get an entrée and the two veggies that come with it. Since I don't like meat much and he is not big on vegetables I would order a couple of veggies and eat one of his. The last time we ate there, the manager came over to our table with a little note showing that if I had ordered separately we would have paid $4.00 or so more and that we were not allowed to "share". We ended up giving the extra $4.00 to our waitress and have not been back. How weird was that? I found it very insulting. So if you go there don't share your food no matter how long you have been married or the manager may come and reprimand you. read more
