I called in an order at lunch time and arrived to the resturant 15 minutes after placing the order. The order was for a meat and three vegetables. Normally when I walk in my order is ready but not today. After paying I had to sit and wait which was fine. I noticed there were several orders packed and ready to go, little did I know one of them was mine!! After waiting 20 minutes, along with being the only person in the waiting area (where the three cashiers can clearly see me sitting and waiting). There was also little to no foot traffic during this time. Not once did either of them ask me for my name or try to check on my order. Another 5 minutes passes and I decide to go and check on my order. I approach all three women at the counter and ask if someone could tell me the status of my order. One lady looks behind them at the order that had been sitting on the countertop the ENTIRE TIME I had been there. The lady who took my money did not even bother to check to see if my order was there and after waiting all that time, she didn't even apologize. She just looked at me. One of the other ladies apologized. I check my food and guess what...it was cold! I don't care how good your food is, customer service matters and unforunately is becoming a lost art. read more

Food good, service well timed, and ambiance gives southern diner. This place is ol' reliable in regards to food quality and service. I always get breakfast here. I got a veggie omelette with hash brown and pancakes. The omelette filling tasted as if some of the ingredients were canned. I really prefer fresh, but if it was that much of an issue I should have cooked at home myself, which I didn't feel like doing. They had really good homestyle cooking. I really enjoyed how flavorful and delicious the food was my hamburger steak it was pretty tasty full of flavor but I wish it was bounded a little bit more so it wouldn't didn't crumble as much but overall really good. I also enjoyed the corn pudding it is very delicious, sweet and had chunks of corn. I also tried their plum cobbler the cobbler reminds me of a peach cobbler. I have never in my life had such a huge argument over a stupid hot dog. It's been several years since I've been here. My lasting memory was it was too expensive for the small portions they give you. That was not my impression at all this time and I thought the serving sizes were good, but they were so stingy with that stupid hot dog. My mom wanted to come here along with my wife, myself, and our toddler. The kid's menu has a choice to pick a meat and a vegetable from the daily lunch menu. Our three year old asked for a hot dog. The daily menu listed a hot dog with sauerkraut or a bratwurst. We ordered the hot dog. The waitress said we can't have a hot dog because they can't cut it for her. I said never mind, we'll cut it ourselves. We went round and round and the waitress goes to get the manager. The manager comes over and starts arguing about the menu. She says the kid's portion is smaller and they don't want to cut it in half for her and waste the other half of the hot dog. Everybody is getting mad by now and we're pointing out that the menu says we can choose a meat and a vegetable and the baby wants a damned hot dog. The manager starts arguing that the menu says "a" meat instead of "any" meat. Now my mom and the manager are going head to head and I started to get up and told my family that we're going somewhere else for lunch. I have walked out of several places and I'm serious when I say I'm walking out and my family knows it. That's when the manager says fine, they'll give us the hot dog and they'll just have to change what their menu says. She told us that in 13 years nobody has ever asked for a hot dog for a kid. I basically told her that I don't really care if they rework their menu or not but we're leaving if they're too stingy to let the baby have her hot dog. I told her they can keep the sauerkraut. They were so shitty about it and the baby was hearing all of this arguing and they were just so rude. It's just a freaking hot dog for crying out loud! They brought out what was more of a sausage that had been cut with no bun and had the sauerkraut anyway. We had them take it back to remove the sauerkraut, but they were too stingy to even give the baby a hotdog bun. We ended up spending $45 plus tip and they caused a scene arguing over half a hot dog with no bun for a baby. I'll always remember this and I'll never go back, or it will be several years again if I do. This whole thing was ridiculous. Well the baby ate her hot dog and fries, plus we gave her some other bites. My wife was not impressed with her omelette. I ordered hamburger steak. I'm used to a ground beef burger patty with grilled onions and gravy. This was like some kind of meatloaf gone wrong. They put fillers in it like they're too stingy to give you that much beef. Catfish had way too much cornmeal. I love cornbread but I hate muffins. These mini muffins were even worse. I remember the Italian spinach being great and it was. Squash was good. Mashed taters were good. Fried green tomatoes are deep fried which isn't as good as a skillet. I must say this was a memorable experience, but in a bad way. read more

My doctor's office is just across the street from The Cupboard. After an early morning doctor visit and before making a three hour drive, I decided to drop in and try their $4.99 Breakfast. Have to confess, I assumed that their $4.99 Breakfast would be skimpy; so I ordered TWO of them on the same plate. Debbie, my Server, gave me a side look and repeated my order... "Two Specials on the SAME Plate?" As I waited for my food and tried to get some reading done, I overheard conversations between Customers and Servers and started to realize that many of those customers were regulars and most of these Servers have been here for years. You start to consider that this is not just a restaurant... It's a Memphis Landmark!!! SURPRISE... SURPRISE... SURPRISE... Their $4.99 Breakfast Special is: 2 Eggs, 2 Sausages or Bacon, and 2 Biscuits; so as Debbie puts two plates in front of me the reality is Two Breakfast Specials CANNOT fit on one plate. The eggs were cooked just as I ordered (Over Medium), the sausage patties were much larger than expected, and the biscuits were large and fluffy. Also, their coffee is pretty darn good. I LOVE Breakfast, but try as I did, I could not polish off those 4 eggs, 4 sausage patties, and 4 biscuits; one of each made the road-trip and became lunch :) Also, I overheard two Customers who were having breakfast order a bowl of soup to go so they could take it to work for their lunch. About 15 years ago it moved a few blocks West to a larger space. My mother used to bring me to the Cupboard back in the 1970s, and when you're a kid, you don't care so much for veggies. Today I had the grilled catfish with three veggies - green beans, Italian spinach, and a baked sweet potato with a small container of cinnamon on the side. The fish was very good - cooked well with good seasonings. The veggies were spot on scrumptious. Service was fast, friendly, and attentive. I never went to the old location but I'm sure the new one is not as good flavor wise (never fails, that's what happens when business move from their original location) There is sort of a gritiness to the place, but that is to be expected (it's an old Shoneys). I'll have to say the bathroom was pristene. I usually get either the chicken fried chicken or chicken and dressing with turnip greens, macoroni and cheese and fried green tomatoes (with ranch dressing) I agree with Joe S. about the stemmy, gritty/slimy texture of the turnip greens. I wouldn't say they don't have a taste but they always taste 'day old' to me. Funny how I always order them anyway hoping the taste has improved. The macaroni is casserole style (I love it!) as opposed to the creamy style that is favored at most places. Can't find better fried green tomatoes in Memphis (believe me, I know) The cornbread muffins are wonderful and even though I usually don't eat bread on a daily basis, I can't resist easting most if not all of the whole basket they give you, along with the yeast roll. Not a good experience. We were waiting for a dr. S appoinment and stopped. For starters it took. 30 minutes for the lunch plate special. All the food came and was room temp. The rolls were too brown and hard. The hamburger we got had a smashed and soggy bun. The menu said fresh mashed pototoes. They were instant and not hot. The best part was the fried green tomatoes. My son had the grilled chicken salad and the chicken was cold. We were disappointed and will not be back. For $12 a plate its not worth it. The place is very out dated but it is clean. read more

Had dinner with my mom. She lives in midtown and of course wanted sum veggies. This was my 1st time eating here. No complaints.. well, it says catfish on the menu but I know better. It was seasoned and cooked to perfection but it was swaii. It wasn't catfish.. Lets take a moment to discuss tha tarter sauce... OMG it was delicious. I'm picky about my tartar sauce and this was better that captain d's tartar.. yup, just that good. My greens were a little bitter but the vinegar pepper sauce took care of that. They were tender, slow cooked.. The fried green tomatoes were good, I know they are outta season . But when I see them on the menu, I can't pass them up. The corn souffle was good, buttery n sweet but ... the corn was kinda chewy. You know with kernel corn its hit or miss. It can dry out n become tough. I could come again.. I had been about 10 years ago at breakfast time and was not impressed. This time we went for lunch. Parking lot was packed and we expected a wait, but when we went in we were seated immediately. Waiter was hurried but pleasant and responsive. I got a carb-loaded meal of chicken and dumplings, carrot souffle, baked sweet potato, and Italian spinach. They bring out rolls, too. The rolls were soooo good. I'd go back for those. The chicken was not cooked with the dumplings, just put on top of them. There was no sauce on it, and a minimal amount on the "dumplings", which were just thick strips of pasta. Had to request some extra gravy to make that dish edible. They really should cook them together so the flavors meld. The other 3 things were delicious. The carrots were like a dessert. Sweet potato was soft and needed nothing else. The spinach was loaded with garlic and parmesan cheese, it was the best thing on the plate. It was a bit pricey for lunch, $30 for two of us, plus the tip. I'll go back though. read more

We had a very large party at the Cupboard for a family reunion brunch. One of the few places in town that allows morning reservations and also has a party room, so it suited our group perfectly! Most of us ordered breakfast options. I only talked to the folks at my table, but we were all pretty happy! The prices are right and the hash browns were crispy. Eggs could have been a little better, but the pancakes were golden and fluffy and bacon chewy in the right places. My dad got a slice of pecan pie and liked that, too. Not sure that any of the food is quite worth four stars, but the price is excellent, the service was warm, inviting, and prompt, and our food came out quickly with all orders correct. Several staff members checked in to make sure we were happy, and we were! So that earns a 4 from me! read more

We were close by and a customer to a cigar bar came in with a take out dinner from Cupboard. It looked good so on the way to our hotel, we stopped by and picked up some chicken to go. We ordered a chicken dinner. It comes with two sides and a large portion of chicken. It was very tasty and the portion for one dinner was so large that the two of us had leftovers after we split it. We ordered via takeout so the service was good as much as we needed. The restaurant has a very storied past and the photos on the wall of the foyer are pretty impressive. Undoubtedly this is a local hidden treasure and we very much enjoyed being a part of this history. I would heartily recommend this Restaurant and will return the next time we visit Memphis. read more

Simple menu, very casual atmosphere, friendly & quick service (mostly during the week), and short orders will be found here. You'll find good comfort food here if you're craving it or if you're just looking for southern cooking. The interior looks like you're stepping into memaw's kitchen and the meals may actually have you wondering if in fact she's back there. I enjoy their breakfast for dinner menu, although the country fried steak, fried catfish, cucumber salad, mac n cheese, and corn bread bites are all very good, too. This isn't the trendiest or most liberal restaurant in town, but you'll get a good and quick meal for a low price. read more

The hotel wouldn't feed us during a recent business trip, so we were directed to the Cupboard for breakfast. Good food, great service - a good southern diner with just the right atmosphere. Nothing fancy, just a great place to get a meal. Breakfast specials were inexpensive and were just right. Eggs were cooked the way they were ordered (I like over-easy, and most overcook them). Wife and I had driven in from out of town. Was seated as normal close to closing time, with seVeral patrons still enjoying their meals, when we were advised that we were the last table and waiting for us to leave enevn though we had to send our food back to be reheated due to most of it being cold. The staff advised they were waiting on us to finish so they could leave even though we had just recently received our food from being reheated. We were made to feel rushed and they even were nice enough to bring to go boxes so we could take our meal with us. This place was recommended to us by some locals. VERY DISSAPPOINTED with the service and treatment even at a late hour, we even said goodnight to everyone while we were leaving and we were completely blown off and ignored. The pancakes we're not very good. Bacon and french toast was good. Southwest omelette was the only great item that was worth getting. As far as staff, take responsibility. everyone i spoke to at the restaurant placed blame on someone else. Had items missing from our order and no condiments. Kind of hard to eat pancakes without any syrup. Wouldn't have been a problem if we had a car to go to the store or a restaurant. Called the restaurant, the initial woman that answered the phone stated "must have been packed by the new girl." then the manager stated "its the drivers responsibility to check the bags" even though, the bags were not initially packaged properly, then stapled shut. we just wanted our items that was ordered. we wanted to try this restaurant because its our first day in TN and had a poor experience. will not order from again. read more

We went there since we were in the area and let's just say, that will be my first and last time visiting. I got the chef salad and the salad was awful, hardly any toppings and a sea of lettuce. My wife got the fried chicken salad and the chicken was cold and the same sea of lettuce with very little toppings... I ordered greens on the side and they had zero flavor just boiled and served..... you can try it if you want. The macaroni and cheese was so watered down, my food came out cold now the fried catfish was good and seasoned well but PLEASE GET SOMEONE BLACK BACK THERE TO FIX THAT WATEREY NO FLAVOR MAC AND CHEESE!!! THE banana pudding was also not good. The pudding was not thoroughly mixed so it had lumps! for memphis i expected waaaaaay more. I am so mad thank God it was not that expensive.
