It was freezing in here so I grabbed my jacket out of the car. But better too cold than too hot so be prepared. I got the veggie omelet. Stopped at the cupboard for lunch before we headed out of town. Food was home cookn' goodness. The complimentary bread was so good but I was sure not to eat too much so I wouldn't spoil my lunch. I got the battered catfish, oven roasted apple, and mash with gravy. I really liked my catfish it wasnt greasy or oily and good flavor the roasted cinnamon apple was sooo good highly addictive. The hushpuppies were alright they were a little disappointing - could have been an off day in the kitchen. I stole bites from my husbands plate and the corn side was delicious. First off great staff and food. Ms. Debbie, our server, was on point. The parking lot was full again a good sign I found in my eating adventures. I got the meat and two ( should have gotten three. The cabbage and the eggplant casserole sounded good.) Price excluding tax was 10 and change. Catfish was well done along with my greens. (Warning: they *Do NOT* use animal fat bacon drippings and the like to season their veggies) and a really fucking god baked apple. Like whole apple not slices. Daddy got breakfast. Two eggs ( supposed to be three) sausage, hashbrowns, and biscuits. Biscuits were fluffy from my taste of them. Dad said it was the best breakfast he's had in a while. Note: Breakfast runs *ALL Day* but their 4.99 special is from 7-11am Only. Also their featured meats or dishes change everyday. 4.8 stars for overall yum and great staff. This place was delicious. I had it at a work lunch and we had the fried fish and chicken with sides of spinach and a few others and it was great. I'm new to Tennessee and was looking for a great food place and this was great. The fish was perfect to me though the chicken was a bit overcooked but the spinach and beans made up for it. A great place to go when you are looking for some good fried fish because that was my favorite. Will return! read more

I've been coming to the Cupboard ever since I was a little girl and I have never left disappointed! It's one of the top places I make sure to go every time I'm in Memphis - and it's usually the very first place I go. My favorite things to get are sweet tea, the buttermilk biscuits and cornbread, fried chicken with gravy, fried green tomatoes, carrot raisin salad, and baked apple. Everything is amazing. I would recommend all of these. Especially the fried green tomatoes, don't miss those! The service is great, too. Everyone is friendly and it's pretty casual, which makes you feel right at home. The bottom line is that for good Southern home-cooking, I wouldn't go anywhere else! read more

This place should be called the greasy spoon. If grease is your thing then this is definitely your place to go to. Went there for breakfast and made the mistake of ordering the so called chicken fried steak. It's not a cube steak like normal. Instead it's a hamburger patty coated in flour and fried. The home fries was a grease pit. Maybe the lunch and dinner is better but geez the breakfast chicken fried steak sucks. Price of the food does not reflect the quality of the food. Stopped in for a working breakfast and as a local breakfast joint goes it was pretty run of the mill. The service is really nice and personal and very much reminds me of Betsy's Pancake House back in New Orleans. Good full breakfast to start the day. read more

Very mediocre pie. We had read that The Cupboard had great pie. This is not the case. The chocolate cream and coconut cream pies that we tried were both very ordinary. The staff is great, very friendly, but I cannot recommend the desserts. read more

I went here because it's 5 minutes from my home. I ordered a veggie plate. The veggies were not seasoned well and the Mac n cheese was overcooked and cheap cheese was used. Also, they are pretty overpriced and the customer service is very subpar. One good thing is they give you cornbread that is taste less than average. I wouldn't recommend this place and it was a total waste of money and time. read more

I had given these restaurant three tries. And they failed three times. The waitress Debbie was great. However, they lost my order. I asked can I please at least have some biscuits which came with my meal anyway. And she said those will be on the house. Well the whole meal should have been on house. I had to send the fried steak back and requested never mind a new one. Then I not into my hash browns not done. The pancakes were blah no taste, eggs watery. The only thing that was good was the biscuits. When I was asked how my meal was I explained and she said oh sorry that will be 10.59. The other two times of had service was a waitress was not enjoying being there and it Shoreditch had service the other time was a wait of 20 minutes with no acknowledgement when I heard the table next complained I asked how long they had been waiting they said 35 minutes that is when I got up and left. Try Bryant's Breakfast or Cracker Barrell. Good service and good food. No more Cupboard for me. read more

I am rating the breakfast we had today. My Dad had Ribeye steak, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, 2 biscuits, and a freshly sliced Ripley tomato for about $11. The steak was large, very tender, and very flavorful. The tomato was simply awesome! Flavor was spectacular. They sell fresh tomatoes, watermelon, and Cantaloupe just inside the entryway. My Western Omelet was very flavorful and juicy. Cooked perfectly! The place is pretty clean with nice bathrooms, and plenty of free parking. read more

We went to this 1/3 full restaurant at 6 pm for dinner tonight and were immediately seated. It was not busy even though it was during the peak time for dinner. After 10 minutes of waiting to be greeted by a server, my wife got up and went to ask the hostess as to the status of our server. Another 5 minutes passed and still no server in sight. The other tables in our section did not receive any service during this time either. One elderly couple at the next table had been waiting patiently for their check the entire time we had been sitting there. Finally a server eventually comes over to our section and greets a table that was seated 10 minutes after we had been seated. She took their order and brought them drinks and bread...yet never looked over at us. My wife spoke up to get her attention, but she never acknowledged us and just walked away. After 20 minutes of no acknowledgement, no drinks, no nothing....we got up and walked over to the hostess at the front desk and told her to have a nice evening as we walked out. The service has really gone down at this place. What a waste of time. We will not return. read more

Upon first entering, was skeptical. Diner is old and appeared outdated and dirty. Almost didn't stay. Took several minutes to receive service. When you come down South- don't think healthy, only hearty. The Cupboard has been here for the last 40 plus years, serving down home southern cooking. This is a couple of blocks away from the hustle and bustle of Beale St/ Downtown. Tucked on the side of Union Ave, this place is always busy, especially for breakfast and lunch. We missed breakfast, they stop serving at 11am. They have lunch specials every day. Lunch was delicious: Golden fried chicken with gravy and three sides. Sides: fried green tomatoes, collard green, and creamy corn. (Monday's special) And my partner in crime had : BIG ol'bowl of grilled Chicken Salad! He couldn't eat fried food 10000days in a row. hehe. Everything I ate was good, not superb but just good, and the unlimited corn bread and rolls were always warm. The service was great. The server checked on us constantly , refilled our coffees and bread basket often. Very polite and friendly. Prices very reasonable for the amount you get. Went here for a business lunch yesterday. I called ahead to make sure the vegetables weren't made with meatstuff, which is almost always the case in the south. A woman assured me over the phone that the vegetables were all vegetarian. I was still skeptical, but I went anyway. Upon opening the menu, I noticed a little note by the vegetables that said they were all made without meat. Yay! I had 4 veggie sides (cucumber salad, turnip greens, baked apple, and black-eyed peas. All great! Our waitress was friendly but brusque, which I actually love. It reminded me of the 24-hour diners in New York, except with real down home cooking. I have been eating at the Cupboard for about 30 years. It never recovered from its move west on Union from the storefronts associated with Kimbrough Towers. I don't know the year of the move, but it went from a crowded, hip diner atmosphere to something like that of a suburban cafeteria. I always have the veggie dishes here. It's great for the heavier southern foods like fried okra, eggplant casserole, corn pudding. The little greasy corn muffins they serve are heavenly. Deserts OK. I am very picky about my turnip greens. I always order them and am always disappointed by their stemmy, gritty texture, and lack of taste. read more

I visited the Cupboard on yesterday at the recommendation of a friend. I was in search of a home cooked meal to celebrate my mother's birthday. The Cupboard's menu has a tremendous amount of choices for vegetables but the entree menu is limited. The Cupboard is a Southern Style Restaurant that does not use meat, bacon drippings or other animal fat in the preparation of their vegetables. In addition, after attempting to eat the "field peas/snaps," the Cupboard does not use seasoning as well. I ordered French Fries with no salt in hopes I would receive hot fries. No such luck and received a small portion that was put in a 4 ounce bowl. My entree was the Fried Catfish. The tartar sauce was good. The fish seemed as though it had been held for a while. The best part of the meal was the small cornbread muffins. As a result, I won't visit this establishment again. read more

The Cupboard is a long time Memphis restaurant. It's a staple in midtown. It serves country food with different specials every day. It also serves breakfast every day. The restaurant looks like a typical country restaurant. For this particular meal, I had the country fried steak and italian spinach, which are two of my favorite foods. The country fried steak was good. However, the spinach was just ok. I prefer it a bit cheesier. For dessert, I had the lemon ice box pie, which was good. The Cupboard is a good restaurant for country food. They have little cornbread muffins which are really good. However, I prefer my country foods with a little more soul. I mean I prefer to eat soul food. Soul food has a bit more seasoning. The restaurant also seemed somewhere that my grandparents would prefer. This place rocks! Hands down best catfish in Memphis. You don't even need a knife to cut it, it's that tender and flaky. And it's super delicious (I had the fried). Huge portions... that and two sides is $9.37, three sides is $9.99. Of and you get THREE fillets. Their sides? Delicious! So many choices, and they were all good. Their green beans? To die for. Super flavourful. Delicious mashed potatoes. By the way, their vegetables? All are cooked without meat, so they're vegetarian friendly. You get rolls and cornbread too. The rolls are great (those delicious soft dinner rolls) and cute little cornbread muffins, they're bite sized and adorable and delicious. The service is great! There are two words that may unequivocally be used to describe the glory that is The Cupboard: Mini cornbread. Seriously, I can eat this stuff like it's going out of style. It's so crisp on the outside with the perfect corn-mealy texture on the inside and I love it. I probably consume enough corn from the bread to get a full serving of veggies--and about a half dozen servings of butter. Oops. But it's sooooo good! Now, the vegetables they serve are what knocked this from five to four stars. That four star is purely for cornbread and aesthetic horror that is just bad enough to be lovable. I've had a couple of vegetables here that I thought were alright. Of course, they are cooked in the Southern tradition. But unlike most Southern restaurants, this place refuses to cook their veggies with meat. Most of the veggies I have ordered here are edible, the one exception being the eggplant casserole. This was flavorless and terrible and nowhere could I find eggplant. In fact, I'm not sure what ANY of that was. Regardless, The Cupboard serves up meat and three's with plenty of love in the cooking and plenty of cooking on the plate. The specials change daily and the old fashioned food is charming. Ate here the other night with two friends. Ordered the liver and onions (entree) with sides of stewed okra and tomatoes, and spinach. The liver and onions was inedible. The liver was cooked to the texture of shoe leather. The gravy came out of a can. I ate all of the okra and tomatoes, but it tasted like it was fresh out of a can. The spinach, which was highly recommended by our waiter, was OK, but it looked like it was frozen spinach seasoned with lots of Parmesan cheese. The cornbread was really white bread with a little corn meal thrown in for color. I really wanted to like this place. It is kinda old fashioned Southern food. But I really can't recommend it. This is the place to go for breakfast in Memphis. It has no frills but the food is fantastic. Its very busy but big enough to handle the crowds. Before we left home, I did my typical research for restaurant reviews. Since we were traveling over a holiday, I called ahead to inquire about the prices, reservations, etc. I called The Cupboard Restaurant and the kind woman that answered the phone confirmed that they would be open Thanksgiving Day and that they had a meat and three veggie plate for $11.51. I asked if that was the price for Thanksgiving and she said yes. I remarked that I expected it to be more since it was Thanksgiving and she said if it was good enough to charge in May then it was good enough to charge in November. I knew we had to visit. We arrived and Memphis from Dallas and went straight to the restaurant. There was a line out the door but everyone coming out was saying it was definitely worth the wait. They also had someone come out with some warm cornbread muffins to whet our appetite and they were yummy. The Cupboard restaurant has been a Memphis tradition for 70+ years. It has a down home diner feel where you would expect all the locals to hang out. It is a Memphis' favorite casual home-cooking eatery. They will not accept reservations, but are always popular, so keep that in mind when planning your day. I ordered the turkey, stuffing, cucumber and tomato salad, cranberry sauce and macaroni and cheese. I skipped dessert as we were planning on eating again later but it was all delicious and the wait staff was very friendly. If you enjoy down-home cooking and are okay with a no-frills atmosphere then you will love the great food and great prices at The Cupboard. I would definitely try this again on my next visit to Memphis. read more
