Grilled Catfish with cabbage, turnip greens and italian spinach.

This is a great meat and 3. Service is quick, polite and efficient. The veggies are among the best l ever had. I think the catfish would have been better blackened but it was as pretty good. I came in a few minutes after opening and got seated right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]By the time I left it was over 3/4 full and no line. They have a lot of seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll be back to try other things.

Lil nuggets of love.... Just wish they had real butter on the table.

This place is A-Ok! That's really the best I can say. It comes up a lot when I search for a place to eat and I wonder, "why I have I not been back there"? I seem to be unable to remember why I don't frequent here in the interim between visits. I don't dig bad reviews, but this one is selfish because I don't see my memory getting any better. I am writing this to either, "Future-Adam" or "Alternate Universe-Adam", whichever decides to come here next and will read this. I hope between the three of us, we make wiser decisions at some point. The staff is often quirky, sometimes super sweet, mostly accommodating, helpful, attentive, and in some cases higher than I am. I'm down with all of it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside is run down considerably and it probably hasn't been remodeled in 20-30 years at least. It looks like an old Shoney's inside without the bad ass salad bar[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Some of you may not even know what that is. It's that old... [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are high booths to sit in that were haphazardly built in a response to COVID I assume. I am pretty sure we are over it all now, on top of the fact that those did nothing to stop the spread, we can probably move on and tear out all that unsightly paneling mess between the booths[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. One of the managers was still now even wearing a mask, I salute you for that man, more will to live than me. Food is fair. It's good enough to eat, it's has calories and other stuff. The little cornbread muffins are the best thing, but they fuck that up with the whipped vegetable spread cups that they call butter. Ugh. My last visit I had the smothered pork chops. The rice under it was the shape of footballs and soaked with old moisture, inedible. The sides were body temperature cool and are frankly just bad. Pork chop was pretty good though. Kudos on that. I am sure Dumb-Adam will be back. You can't tell that guy shit, man. '24 - 68/101

Parking lot was full it extended into the overflow parking lot. I was almost about to leave but decided to park and see how long the wait was. Glad I did because I did not have to wait to be seated. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was plenty of room inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The waitress Amber came right over introduced herself and took my complete order. She brought bread and my drink then shortly brought my food. I ordered the vegetable plate consisting of 2 sweet potatoes, corn pudding, Italian spinach and cabbage. The entire meal was hot and good. Of course I never finish my meal but always get a to-go box for later. Amber checked on me throughout the meal even though it was busy. As I paid at the register I was asked if I was satisfied with my meal and asked if I would like a bag for my to-go box which I kindly accepted. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pleasant atmosphere, great service and good hot food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean bathrooms a plus.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Love this place.

    Country Breakfast with home fries
    Yun-Wen L.

Food/Taste/Flavor: 3/5 - Country Breakfast with home fries and Cavallo Special (rib-eye steak with 2 eggs) with hash browns. The country fried steak was overcooked and extremely salty and the extra salt from the gravy didn't help it much. The rib-eye steak was decent but slightly on the overcooked side for our liking. The home fries seemed to be some type of roasted potatoes so was quite confused since we were expecting fries. The packaging wasn't done well so the whole bag was oily including the utensils, biscuits, and toast. Service: 4/5 - busy restaurant and they seemed annoyed that we didn't immediately know where to order or what the items were. Waited about 25 minutes for our food to be made. Ambiance: n/a - ordered food to go. Older restaurant but seems clean overall Value for price: 3/5 - such a busy and popular store for mediocre food unfortunately.

Chicken and dressing with cranberry sauce, baked sweet potato and macaroni and cheese
    Julie T.

First of all the service was excellent! The menu for Saturday's special was extensive and you could also get their other options. We chose the "plates" I posted. The bread was ok- a little in the dry side, butter would have helped, but we did not request any. Cornbread was not sweet- which I was happy about! For my meal, the dressing was delicious, most with the right amount of seasoning. Chicken was plentiful and tender, but had little to no seasoning itself- when combined with the dressing and gravy it was very nice. Mac and cheese was sweet? Texture was good, but I added more salt than I normally would- still overly sweet to me. Baked sweet potato was lovely! My hubby liked the cranberry sauce. His country fried steak was just ok, but nothing he would order again, other sides ok. Portions were generous. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This restaurant has many signed photos of local and national celebrities on the walls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice clean atmosphere with great service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Desserts looked good, maybe we will come back for pie and coffee in the future.

Sold 4 scoop sides and said this was considered a quart or dressing for $15.00. This is NOT A QUART. Scammers.

They sold us four scoops of dressing claiming it was a quart for $15. This is not a quart it's a scam

The place to go for good southern home cooking. A classic "Meat & 3" restaurant. The spinach casserole is out of this world! Their specials change daily so check the menu before you go. Also one of the few places in Memphis that sell good ole fried green tomatoes.

Think of going to your grandmas house for an meal and that about sums up what the Cupboard is. You walk in and your are amongst locals who are here for a good meal and a friendly face. This isn't some fancy spot but rather good eats. With that said they serve breakfast all day and they have a rotating menu of what's being served that day. However you aren't going to go hungry with the portion sizes. We opted for breakfast as it was between breakfast and lunch hours and we were just starting our day off but it was breakfast with a lunch vibe. I got the country breakfast that was chicken fried chicken with country gravy, two eggs (ordered over medium) hash browns, pancakes and biscuits for about $14. The hash browns needed some love and gravy needs some seasoning. My sister got the steak and eggs which came with biscuits and choice of hash browns or home fries. The steak was thin but was seasoned well also for about $14. I was checking out other peoples food at the tables around me and seriously everything looked delicious. Would I come back? Yep . . . Like I said, friendly folks, good food, great prices.

My first time here with family and we were lucky enough to have Evelyn wait on us, she's been here 30 years and the service was fast, friendly and the food is delicious! I had the grilled catfish, squash casserole, turnip greens and speckled butter beans - highly recommend!

I've never heard of eating neckbones so of course that's what I ordered. The pork neckbones had been well braised and were super delicious. Truly an ultimate pork experience. You definitely have to pick them up and chew all over. But there's lots of meat. Some of it you can get to with a fork, and some of it can be broken apart for easier access to the meat, but it is not an elegant meal! I found the vinegar at the table really enhanced the flavor. My sides were black-eyed peas and turnip greens, and the greens were spectacular. The corn muffin was very good. The sweet tea was very sweet, but not nearly as sweet as the peach cobbler. The cobbler was delicious with lots of nutmeg, but people really have a sweet tooth in Memphis. I ate on a Sunday and got there just before noon to get in ahead of the after-church crowd and my timing was perfect. The dining room filled up while I was eating.

And he's only worked there for a mere 5 weeks. I asked him who the owner is and he directed me to Jerry and Patrice Thompson, two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Jerry has a big welcoming personality and a great sense of humor. Fried catfish fillets were excellent! Crust was just right and the fillets were moist. I ate everything in my plate. Peach cobbler was warmed up, we opted to not have it w ice cream, and it is the best in Memphis! Such a long and storied history for this restaurant. We are so glad we came here and will return next time we are in Memphis. My only regret is we were too full to eat fried chicken too.

You place your order first and then you find a seat if one is available to dine in. Dining is limited and the establishment consist of local black artwork covering the walls there is an upstairs area, but that seating is also limited. The owner was very proud of his establishment and gave us the history of how they came about and who cooks what in the restaurant. The service was great the food unfortunately did not match. I'm all for supporting black owned businesses, but I have to give honest feedback. Starting with the sides, the spaghetti, the cabbage, and the greens all had excessive amounts of sugar in them, which was such a turn off, everything taste the same it was so sweet it created a film in my mouth of sugar. The sweet tea lemonade mix was again full of sugar. You couldn't taste the lemonade or the tea. It was just sweetness. I do understand certain people like their food like this. I however, am not one of those individuals. The turkey ribs, a.k.a. clavicle bone taste like smoked bologna and the A1 barbecue sauce did not enhance the flavor whatsoever I nor my mother could finish our food the cornbread taste like mush everything overpowered everything there was no distinct taste of broccoli or cheese just mushy wet undercooked cornbread that again was sweet. The only star of the show for this experience was the fried fish. It was cooked to perfection seasoned well surprisingly without sugar. We could not finish our food after a couple of bites so we took it to go and handed it to a homeless person on the way home. I love the concept of this establishment. I love how they incorporate other black businesses and I can tell he is proud of his work. I would love to support in other ways, just not through the food unfortunately, I will not be returning but I pray this establishment continues to improve, evolve, and thrive, it's a million herbs and spices to utilize, sugar doesn't have to be one of them and for $70 bucks I do expect to enjoy the food to some extent.

As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!
