Port o johns were relatively clean and never a massive line to get a stall. The festival was packed! Sooo many people. Lots of vendors set up selling everything from trinkits to roofing shingles... Honeslty, alot of junk. We did however find one vendor selling wine slushie bags, which we grabbed. The food... Well, lets just say its all a crapshoot. We split an order of clamcakes and chowder from the Kenyons booth. Clamcakes were delicious, chowder was lousy, tasting just like canned snows chowder. We then split an order of fried clams from J&J's and the clams were a great size, tasted fresh but I didnt care for the flavor of the batter that they used. Next we moved on to lobster rolls from The Breachway Grill. Eh. They were just OK at best, lobster meat was very wet and it was served on a massive amount of bread. I had several pieces of shell in mine (in fact one piece jabbed my gum and it hurts like hell today). Basically out of all the vendors we tried, I would never look to go to their restaurants. There were not enough places for people to sit and eat and then you have the ignorant people just sitting and chatting at their tables with no food or drink just taking up space while you are standing next to them trying to juggle your meals and beverage and they give zero F's. All in all, I am a sit down dinner type of girl, this type of event is not for me or my husband. Glad we checked it out, but won't ever return.

We have no children, and rides aren't our thing at all. So we came for the food and the vendors. The live music was nice to hear while walking around as well. The vendors were primarily trinkets and home improvement stalls. I don't need any junk and I rent... So there goes 99% of all the vendors. We did find a company from Ohio that sold wine slushee mixes and picked up a bag to go (I wish they sold some to drink at the event). The food vendors were plentiful; pretty much anything you could want to try was there. We tried to stick to Rhode Island seafood, since we were at the Rhode Island Seafood Festival after all... Kenyons was there, they make the best mix for Johnny cakes. Their clam cakes were probably the best I have ever had; however their chowder was probably the worst I had ever had... My wife went to J&J's for some fried clams. I personally am not a fan of clam bellies, so I wasn't too excited about this stop. Lastly we went to Breachway Grill for lobster rolls. As usual I got the hot and my wife got the cold. I personally enjoyed both of them. Especially the cold, which I am normally not a fan of. I loved the toasted rolls, but they were a little on the thick side. Not being a fan of crowds, I can't say that I really enjoyed myself at the festival. For the amount spent to get in and try a few bits of food (which a fair amount ends up in the trash), I would have much rather have gone to a really nice restaurant and truly enjoyed my meal. Probably will not be in a jury to go back to this event in the future.

Fire in the…read more sky With the crummy economy and parsimonious town officials forced to do more with less, events like town fireworks and other community celebrations are becoming a increasing uncommon anachronistic phenomenon. Fortunately the town of South Kingstown still ignores the increasing dismal financial reports and puts on a great 4th of July celebration. The event held at Old Mountain Field included food, music, dancing and of course some impressive fireworks. Not just un flousse petit, but some huge and thunderous explosions accompanied by mesmorizing visual pyrotechnics. Quite impressive for a relatively small town. Beside things going boom in the night, the event also had a band, people dancing and of course lots of food. Many people brought there own treats and folks seemed to enjoy passing around homemade delicacies to their neighbors. Even though it was crowded and noisy everyone seemed extremely jovial and convivial and I didn't observe any obnoxious drunks or mental defectives attempting to cause trouble. Even the numerous stinky dogs seemed to enjoy themselves and added to the festivities. One interesting item was the osprey nest located right on a light pole in the middle of the field. The adult didn't seemed especially bothered by the noise and at one point even brought a huge fish back to the nest for her young to rip apart and devour. Quite entertaining to watch in a morbid sort of way. With so many towns and cities forced to cut back everything they can to mollify bean counters, it's nice to see some places still care more about the people of a community rather than some arcane numerical bottom line. This was a great celebration by some great people in a great town and a great time was had by all.

The event was carefully organized and meticulously run. Security and staff were everywhere to help a wandering patron or guide people in the right direction. The grounds of Marble House were absolutely exquisite, and provided the perfect backdrop for this elegant affair. My personal favorites were the refreshing spritzers offered by the St. Germain table, and the amazing smoked trout tasting from Castle Hill. I was pretty blown away by the quality and quantity that every booth was offering. Love this event - can't wait to go back next year!

A very Rhode island…read morefestival Johnny Cakes have been around for a while, in fact most historians say they have been around in one form or another for centuries. Even though many places on the east coast have Johnny Cakes, Rhode island is traditionally given as the place where they originated or at least became popular. So what better place than Rhode Island to have a Johnny Cake Festival Just fried corn meal with some salt, hot water and perhaps some sugar, it is amazing how many different types have showed up. Lots of subtle differences and of course everyone claims theirs are the best. Actually the festival was a lot more than just Johnny Cakes and in the whole festival I only saw one vendor actually selling Johnny Cakes. The lines were so long that we didn't even bother and stuck with the lobster rolls, clam chowdah, clam cakes and kettle corn. So much food around that there was no way you were going hungry even without the Johnny Cakes. Some cool critters like sheep, goats and alpacas were around and lots of skillful artists spinning, carving, wefting, blacksmithing, weaving, and painting. A whole bunch of very talented and fascinating folks still knowledgeable about some anachronistic arts. Some great music and several environmental groups were around to entertain and of course lots of traditional and cool food and crafts. The location was lovely with a pleasant pond and several canals and waterfalls. The parking wasn't bad because they wasn't any. Everyone parked at the old fairground three miles away and were shuttled in by old school buses. Actually made it less chaotic. A cool festival and place to learn about New England arts, crafts, history and of course food. It was kind of curious that there weren't more Johnny Cakes. Lots of cool & eclectic vendors mostly skewered towards the uniquness of the Ocean State. Lots of food & Johnny Cakes too but I didn't have any. Two of my local favorites had a presence there: Grey Sail & Dave's Coffee. There was also live music. I got to sample some pumpkin flavored whiskey from Sons of Libtery that made me want more. I'd drink whiskey but my wife says I turn into a different person so I'll wait for them to release their Dave's Coffee syrup flavored vodka! The only drawback is that transportation to get to the actual festival. Even though you have to take a cramped school bus to get there it's definitely worth & I'll be taking my family for years to come.

The festival had 3 stages with performers (one large and two smaller ones), with all the times organized on the app. In addition to the stages, there were multiple tents with merchandise, clothing, and non-alcoholic drinks and food. One building had actual public restrooms for men/women, everywhere else has porta potties (long lines everywhere though). There were only 2 areas where you could purchase alcohol; two beer gardens very far apart from each other. 100 people line to get into the beer gardens, without the ability to bring any drinks back outside. Clearly to limit the amount of obnoxiously drunk people, but definitely a buzz kill (literally) when you want to walk around and drink while listening to live music. For sure losing a lot of money by limiting where you can buy and drink alcohol!! Huge miss on the festival's part!! Criticism on one of the stages we watched, was the audio was way off (M. Ward was performing). His microphone kept going in and out, as did multiple guitars of his. You could tell he was getting frustrated, as he made multiple comments. Audio guy seemed more interested in eating his large burrito than paying attention and doing his job. Another negative would be the security staff. As we were watching one of the artists perform, one older lady started tapping everyone in the row to get my partner's attention (we had been sitting in our seats for over an hour at this point, with only 5 minutes left in the performance). She started yelling at him to get up, because he wasn't allowed to have a fold up chair in our row. Seemed absolutely ridiculous to cause a scene over. We didn't realize that was the rule, and would've happily moved our chair immediately after the artist ended. As soon as my partner got up to set the chair on the end of the aisle, they quickly gave his seat to someone else waiting to sit down. Multiple people in the audience said they remembered this rude staff member from last year, as always causing a scene; and other staff members of security also apologized for her and stated she's "always this rude, none of them like her". When you have a staff member that the AUDIENCE remembers from previous festivals, as being mean and rude for no reason, it's time to let them go. Seems that going to AND leaving the concert was a catastrophe for people, especially if you drove. We came quite a few hours after the start, left before the last band played, and took a water ferry back to our hotel in Newport- so we personally did not have any problems with that. OK experience to try out once if you really like folk music, but can say I will not be back.

2016 was my first year attending the Newport Folk Festival & I made it back again this summer!…read more There are 3 stages spread out over the fort with 2 smaller venues to catch acts. The main (Fort) stage had the bigger & more established acts. On the perimeter of "seating" were food trucks & beer gardens. Lots of room to put down a blanket & great visibility but no damn shade which can be a problem when the heat is pushing 90 degrees like it was last year. I preferred the other stages that have more up & coming artists like. Again, these also are flanked by merchandise tents & food vendors. They offer seating & standing room but it's limited. It's about a 5 minutes walk from all 3 stages so you can take in a lot of music in a limited time. It's quite overwhelming but definitely worth going if you're into live music. There are plenty of options to get to Fort Adams (Ferries from Newport & Jamestown, biking & on-site parking.) The festival does sell out usually on the day tickets are released but they're easy to unload as it's so popular.

Foolproof, Revival & Grey Sail were just some of the over 40 Rhode Island & national breweries on hand pouring brews. Even with so many awesome choices it seemed like getting a tasting wasn't a problem. With two separate tent areas it was easy to accommodate all the patrons. I don't remember having a long wait at any brewery's offerings & there was so much to sample I could always find someone to pour me a beer. I wish there were more than just 3 food trucks. I definitely enjoyed my pulled pork grilled cheese on Texas toast with cole slaw from Ed's BBQ. And I've had amazing food from Fan-Cheezical before too. I just wish there was a little more to offer but I'm not complaining about the quality. Three hours seemed to be enough to get my money's worth. I ordered VIP tickets as soon as they went on sale to save a few bucks. For $65 I got a free t-shirt & access to a few "exclusive" beers in a VIP tent. along with some catered food. Their offerings weren't anything too crazy but still good. I feel like it was worth it but I wouldn't have missed out on much. It can get really hot at Ninigret Park during the day so I opted for the 5-8 session & lucked out with the weather. There were porta-potties but the one I used wasn't nasty. I'd definitely recommend checking it out if they do it again next year, I know I will.

They have fresh produce, homemade jams, pies, dips, sauces etc etc. We get 5 bundles of firewood for $20 and over the summer would drive here to get their corn on the cob. This was the best corn we found all season. I recently made two big batches of corn chowder and man, was it delicious.
