Phenomenal ice cream and really great prices. One scoop came out to $4.70 with tax and 2 scoops is about $1 more. The oreo ice cream was creamy and delicious and definitely didn't skip on the oreo pieces. They have a good bit of parking because there's a resturaunt and liquor store there as well. The line was quite long (probably because of the above) so it does take a bit to get your ice cream. Worth it, in my opinion, but just keep in mind it's not necessarily a quick stop! read more

This was a delicious ice cream spot and the perfect way to finish off a sunny beach day! It was extremely popular but thankfully the line moves relatively quickly and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The business mainly operates through the windows and it was efficient and clean. There were so many flavors to choose from. I got the Love Potion #9 flavor (vanilla and raspberry swirl with mini dark chocolate peanut butter cups) in a Barbie sprinkle waffle cone and it was delicious! We will definitely be back to try the other things on the menu like the sundaes, soft serve, and ice cream nachos. read more

Family run, friendly service, and one of the very few ice cream shops that serve coffee soft serve ice cream. They can now swirl coffee with Vermont Maple syrup flavored soft serve. My car just turns in automatically whenever I pass. read more

If you have a choice of Grays or Helgers....Helgers every time. Great flavors, nice staff, and tasty!! There are so many ice cream places that claim to be the best, but their ice cream is bland and boring. This place actually puts flavor in their ice cream! For example, I've always been a fan of buttee crunch. At grays you might get 2-3 pieces of crunch in vanilla ice cream. Here, it's chock full and has that classic buttery taste. Yum! read more

This place is so legit. I'd ordered a scoop of "pudding" flavored ice cream. I expected something rich and chocolaty like American chocolate pudding. Instead, I got this absolutely rich, decadent, complex scoop of ice cream with dried fruit and what tasted like baking spices. It seemed to be inspired by British puddings instead. Love, love, love. Shoot, wish I hadn't written this review when I'm planning to travel in the opposite direction of Tiverton because I'd go back now for a scoop if I could. We are from NJ and made sure to enjoy the local ice cream stops here in Tiverton/Newport. Out of the 4 ice cream shops we tried (Gray's, Moose Cafe, Newport Creamery & Helgers) Helgers is the best! All four of us ordered different hard ice cream flavors and they were all delicious!! My daughter ordered Strawberry and my other daughter ordered S'mores. They loved both of them. We all tried each other's and were impressed with how much S'mores tasted like S'mores! I ordered the Moose Tracks which was delicious and my husband order the Chocolate PB Cookie Dough. I also tried the PB Oreo which I would order next time! There was no line and we went on a Thursday evening, the portions were very generous and there was seating at the picnics tables to the left. We also met the local cat, a beautiful and friendly orange tabby cat. He was so friendly that my daughter asked to take him home (see picture)! We would not only recommend this place with high recommendations, this is now our local favorite above the other options!! read more

Love coming to Helger's Ice cream shop! Great ice cream at an amazingly low price and it's pretty cool to have chickens and cats walking around lol. The staff is very nice and there is plenty of parking. Don't park in front of the liquor store though they frown on that. Place is a hidden gem in this area! We regularly go here to escape the craziness of Newport. They have a wide variety of flavors to suit anyone's palette. read more

Helger's Ice Cream shoppe was a fun little find when we were looking for the new Plouf Plouf restaurant that is located right next door. While we were waiting for our food, I decided to have dessert first (or first dessert first?). They have outdoor seating and several windows for people to be served through. Given the timing of the day and the time of year, tons of people were coming by. Lots of older couples as well and you can tell that this shop is a local favorite. The ice cream is smooth creamy but didn't have all the flavor selections I was looking for. Nonetheless, I found something with chocolate and got a scoop in a cup. Loved it! Only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because it could have used some cleaning up around picnic table area and the one blue bench in front of service window had lots of chocolate ice cream dripped down it. I'm going to qualify this-- my first ever yelp review-- with a few things. Ice cream is hands down my favorite food, I eat it almost everyday. The first thing I do when traveling is find the best ice cream shops. I also am an avid ice cream maker, I have been hand making the stuff since childhood and I am currently in the process of starting an ice cream business. All this is to say, I like to think I have a pretty good idea of what's what when it comes to the stuff. Now, I'm writing this review in February 2019, nearly 8 months after my visit to Helger's, because I am still thinking about the cookie dough ice cream I had there. I was visiting a friend in RI and we had already been to 4 different ice cream shops in the 3 days I had been there. The ice cream at Helger's far surpassed them all. I sat in the car eating my double scoop cone (which, by the way is a very generous portion) and after I finished I literally went back and ordered another scoop. It was just that amazing. It flouted the law of diminishing marginal utility. Now I have no idea how it has so few reviews and photos, it's a shame and part of what inspired me to put in the effort of writing this damn thing which I never do, despite how often I consult yelp in my travels. It seemed selfish of me to not share my experience with people looking to experience some really awesome ice cream. I'm not sure when I'll be making the 10hr drive from Pittsburgh back to Rhode Island, but I know when I do, Helger's is going to be my first stop. Go, just go. read more

This place is a hidden gem! We used to go to Gray's, but I find this place to be a lot better. Gray's seems to be working off of their reputation, but Helger's has been around for a long time as well. (over 20 years). Depending on your server, the portions are always huge huger and hugest for the price! (A few of the girls go overboard on portions, but who's complaining!) A lot of favors to choose from, but the Vanilla and Chocolate soft serve are always icy for some reason. The coffee soft serve is creamy and delicious though! read more

Helger's Ice Cream has to be one of the most underrated places to eat in the state, or at least one of the most underrated places to eat ice cream in the state. I grow tiresome of Gray's getting all the recognition and awards for Best Ice Cream in Rhode Island Monthly. This place is everything Gray's is not. And I personally mean that in a great way. For one thing, Helger's does not have the long lines that end somewhere in Cornwall, England that Gray's ice cream has, due to Gray's being so talked about in New England, it gets packed there, which Helger's does not. Less of a wait for me, I say. The prices are lower than it's competitor, and the quality is amazing. Rich, delicious, and creamy. The portions are massive. I always get a small because 9 times out of 10 (well, maybe sometimes 8) the medium (or two scoops) is actually too big for me! The variety is great, too. There is something for everyone, if you prefer more run of the mill chocolate or vanilla, you will be happy. If you are like me and like the cookie doughs, the fudge brownies, the milky ways, and the snickers type flavors, you will be in all your glory. They also offer a few non-fat and sugar free choices as well, and every season seem to have a couple more interesting flavours that they have added to their menu. Helger's Ice Cream is located on Main Road in Tiverton, in the White Wine Plaza. Some people may not like the fact that it lacks indoor seating, but they have picnic tables to eat at. Helger's offers hard and soft serve ice cream flavors as well as frozen yogurt. If they would change their chocolate, vanilla and twist soft serve back to the original recipe they had... for sure this would be a 4 star review. But they still get 3 because the service is good and the coffee soft serve is fantastic, it's a totally different consistency than the others for some reason. Cheap prices and large serving sizes are a plus. They also have a doggie dish for our 4 legged little girl... she loves the vanilla with a dog biscuit tucked into it. read more

First weekend of summer and came across Helgers in search of ice cream! First destination from Dartmouth was Handy Hill in Westport. Been there before and liked the ice cream but the line was so ridiculously long that I can't believe people were standing in it. From the window almost to end of the parking lot!! Forget that! So with a complaining five year old and a 13yr old who "just wants Cotton Candy flavor ice cream" we drove on by. Next was Gray's Ice Cream. Actually haven't been since that 13yr old was in my belly. Literally! There's a picture in her baby book of me big and pregnant eating an ice cream and petting a cow. The line was long but not as bad as it could have been. However, the parking lot looked way too packed. I swear that can't be all the customers? No way we were going to try and wedge into a spot. Ice cream isn't worth a dent. Honestly when we drove by after writing off Grays we had Friendlys in mind. Good 'ole reliable Friendlys. It was heading down Main when we saw Helgers and turned around. There wasn't much of a line and the parking looked good. After a short time in line I ordered a medium cookie dough in a cup, medium cotton candy in a cone (which was huge) and a chocolate frappe. They had soo much to choose from and even SOFT SERVE! But I knew my 6mth old wasn't going to give me the pleasure of having an ice cream cone. Actually because of the ample parking I was able too pull around back and nurse my son while the girls had their ice cream. That was great. :-) My one complaint was that there was only one garbage barrel all the way next to the order window. Not even one by the picnic tables. But this was a delightful experience and I actually didn't have to repeat the order and that only makes it so much better of an experience. Great place and great job ladies working the windows! This is not a great place for softserve. I ordered a small vanilla softserve and it was really icey tasting. I love soft serve and have had it had many places. This tasted like frozen yogurt or like something was off with the machine...it was shiny. After two bites I went up to the window and explained I felt something was off and the server just kept saying it was cold out today so that is why it was like this. I explained there seemed to be something very different and icey about this. The server insisted it had to do with the outdoor cold temperatures and that it was cold inside too. I give this one star because she did not even offer me a different ice cream. There was no real customer service except telling me that softserve tastes different due to weather which I have a feeling is incorrect. It tasted like watered down milk. The hard ice cream looked good so maybe that is good. For your reference It was $3.35 for my small icemilk cone and the portion was big, just not good at all. The server was not rude, just not helpful at all and clearly clueless about customer service. I really think she should have offered me something else given the icy shiny soft serve I showed her. Its not my fault your machine does not work in cold temperatures, if that is really the issue. Maybe its just a different type of ice cream. Either way, I will not go back and cannot recommend the softserve. read more
