I ended up grabbing the table bar by the window with a street view and honestly loved it (10/10). I ordered a latte, which was decent. By around noon the place was booming and there was even a line to order, so I'm glad I came earlier. Overall, it's a really cute retro-style café with lots of fun little details and decor that give it a lot of character.

Curbside Cafe is San Diego County's own Paris Sidewalk Cafe. Paris cafes are possibly the most well-known image of the City of Light. Analogous to Paris, San Diego County's own Curbside Cafe is becoming one of the most well-known images for Vista, the City of Art. World-renown Paris cafes are more than places to sip coffee, they are institutions in Paris, magnets for tourists, cultural phenomena. No trip to Paris is complete without a relaxing, long sit with some fascinating art-viewing and people-watching at a Paris cafe... Curbside Cafe is Southern California's Paris sidewalk cafe/art gallery where people come to sip strong, freshly ground, dark roast coffees, espressos, and fun blends like Mexican Mocha, Peppermint Patty, Monkey Mocha, Snow Cap, Almond Joy, and Milky Way, and to bring their out-of-town/international friends/family, many of whom request to visit the Curbside Cafe for the first time and many who request to visit again because the food is "amazing." Wanting to come back for the consistently great food, they also want to engage in the cafe's rich, intellectual consortium, to view art, to people watch, and to say hello to the owner, John Randall, on whom they depend to be there, friendly, consistent, steady. (When we were there, an eight-year-old personally handed him a handwritten Thank You card for one of his contributions, which he modestly downplayed. He thinks you should always generously contribute to your community, and not ask for fanfare.) People also flock to Curbside Cafe to celebrate different occasions, like birthdays. The deceptively large, 2,200-sq.-ft., cafe easily accommodates, seating 100 comfortably inside and on the patio. Behind most Paris cafes, there's passion and a story. Uniquely, even for Paris cafe owners/managers, Curbside Cafe's owner worked both the "front and back of the house" at four- and five-star resorts, so he understands every restaurant aspect firsthand. Owning his own cafe is something he's always wanted to do. With 30 years in the business, he finally felt ready. Then, he "fell in love with the charm of Vista," and learned of the plans to build the Krikorian Premiere Theatre and expand downtown Vista. He took over the original Curbside Cafe in 2002, charting immediate improvement. He said, "You have to have a passion. I love it. It's a dream come true for me." His passion extends to his hours and his food. At 4:30am every day, he arrives to bake his homemade cinnamon rolls - on which he does not make a profit. During the day, he "works the floor," and shops for fresh produce at the local markets, where he's increasingly recognized. (He smiled and sheepishly laughed when recanting his newfound celebrity experiences.) John exudes incredible business acumen, reflected in no server shift schedule changes or layoffs, flying in the face of the economic downturn of 2008-2009. In fact, he maintains 0% attrition, and does not plan to change his price list. He's also having a bit of fun with his "everyone wins" drawings; you drop your card into the bowl, and you get a gift certificate to come back - along with a personal handwritten Thank You card of gratitude from John himself. John says it's important that the Curbside Cafe continues to thrive because it supports his local suppliers, as well as people in the community who "are here once, twice, more regularly during the week, and weekends." For example, the local Jazzercise groups, and the City of Vista's staff, who recommend him (" I love it," he says.), are regulars. On a lark, he'll personally deliver a batch of his mouthwatering cinnamon rolls to neighboring businesses, whose staff are also regulars. Regulars buy everything on the menu, from his homemade cinnamon rolls, to swordfish sandwiches and Crab Cake Benedict, to the healthy tofu scramble and fruit cups, to country-style biscuits & gravy and Huevos Rancheros. Curbside also serves lunch, including cheeseburgers, patty melts, chicken and sausage sandwiches, Reubens, etc. If you desire something in particular for breakfast or lunch, chances are it's already on the menu, and it's four-star-resort-quality. John says if he had to do it all over again, with the option of locating his business anywhere, it would be Vista, hands-down. On that note, he is looking to expand. Went in there a few times, and I had coffee from across the street at Lush, and let's just say the waitress was not happy about it, talking badly about them, saying how terrible their coffee and food was. There was another occasion when I went in that some bikers went in there wearing an Allen's Alley Cafe shirt, and again, one of the waitress' rolled her eyes at all of them and said "Are you f**king kidding me?" That was extremely rude, and unprofessional. Never going back due to the lack of respect to other businesses. An apology to all of them should be in order. I've heard the employees at Lush directing their customers over there (more than once, I will add!) saying wonderful things about the Curbside Cafe. It blows me away how rude these ladies were, definitely ruined my experience. It's sad because I genuinely liked their food, but will not tolerate this sort of behavior. Sorry curbside---- you've lost a customer. read more

the food and service inside are OK, but beware whenever ordering to go, waitresses and staff frequently push to keep as much of the change as possible because they feel entitled to a tip for simply putting food containers in a bag and handing it to the customer. I've had multiple instances of the female staff members hanging on to my change or asking "do you want your money back", and I had to tell them sternly I did. This is not the proper way to treat customers and this is flat out DISHONEST. You don't DESERVE a tip for simply handing a bag of food to go, you need to earn it through service, learn this fundamental principle of dealing with patrons read more

So my fiancé was fired today from curbside cafe by the owner John. She's been there for over 2 years without ever being out sick. She's been going thru some issues over the course of a few days and left work early on Saturday and was out Sunday. John has asked her to go on a date at least 3 times in the last year which Rachel as said no each time. He told her today apone firing her she needed to get ride of all these guys in her life which says very loudly that he has some sort of infatuation with her and can't let it go. He's a sorry person and please stay away from there because he's obviously got issues.! Basically fuck curbside!! read more

I truly love this place and I do believe I eat there every weekend. And I keep discovering new things, like John's fabulous soups! (Who knew I liked Carrot Ginger soup? But I love it there!) Breakfast is delicious, with good hash browns, awesome coffeecake and the best selection of fresh fruit in a bowl that you can find. Lunches are also great, so it is hard to choose at brunchtime! I often get the tuna salad and soup or a salad with their really good ranch dressing (homeade?). Great service always and love the atmosphere. A little gem in Vista. read more

I love supporting local businesses, and this place makes it easy to do so! Breakfast is served all day long, and the choices are fantastic. I suggest the croissant breakfast sandwich. The flavor is amazing. Inside and outside seating are available. There is sometimes a wait on weekend mornings, but that is actually a good sign, isn't it? If there's a wait, then there is something worth waiting for. The servers are friendly, no-nonsense, get-the-job-done kind of people. I tried a gourmet coffee the other day and it was hot and chocolatey and foamy - perfect for a rainy day. We put our business card in their little drawing not too long ago and just got a free meal coupon in the mail. The pesto was so incredibly fresh and flavorful that it honestly made me want to go vegan again. And I say that as someone who had been vegan for almost 3 years... until satan got in my head and I relapsed back into eating meat. But after eating here, I'm questioning all my life choices. The food is THAT good. Everything tasted fresh, thoughtfully made, and full of flavor. You can tell they actually care about what they're serving, and it makes such a difference. 10/10 would recommend.
