This replaced a good small chain Indian place a couple years ago and we have been very disappointed! The food is pretty good but the praise stops there. First of all , the staff is often so grumpy/rude that we feel annoyed before we even get to taste the decent food. This made us avoid the place for a few months after our first couple of visits. Finally we went back because, where else can you get quick, decent Indian food in Brookline? However, we have now completely boycotted the place because, not only are they grumpy, but they have ripped us off at least three times. They either forget to give us the extra naan we ordered and paid for, or consolidate multiple servings of a given dish into a take-out container that seems to be smaller than twice the individual serving containers, or forget to add a samosa but still charge us for the higher priced combo plate. I hate having to watch out for this sort of thing and double check the order and addition. It has happened enough times (that we actually caught) that it seems to be a deliberate or systemic problem there and we refuse to give them our business any more. read more

Ordered pani puri n several other stuff, ordered in first time, delivery, first bite n ewwwww!!! Bad oil, stale smell. Being an Indian and a good cook, I hardly judge Indian restaurant on being bang on right with spices or taste but STALE Food!!! Nope, that doesn't go down. Also don't have south Indian food with north indian if you can't do justice with them both. Flavourless sambar n chilli chicken tasted more like kadhai chicken. read more

I was warned not to go here, but went there for lunch today anyway... 1. Walked in a half hour before the buffet (2:30 p.m.) ended and saw that the food had probably been there since 10:00 a.m. so I decided against it. I instead ordered a dish of saag paneer, basmati rice, and plain naan. Around 7 dollars altogether according to the menu. 2. I am charged $13 and change. Instead of making my food fresh which is what a normal person might expect - the guy I order from walks straight over to the $8 buffet table two feet to my right and from it serves me a dish of bagain bartha (i have no idea how this ever entered into my order) saag paneer (an entire cup that literally contained 1 piece of paneer) and a burnt piece of naan. 3. I learned my lesson. I'll eat garbage off the floor at Ranni down the street before I give my money to the Gourmet Curry House again. read more

Cons: Sometimes the staff can be rude esp the older woman who works there, The food, depending on which day you go, may make u feel a little sick in the stomach area(as said by my friend from india), the buffet times could stand to be a little longer, they will ask you to leave at 3pm even if you are not finished eating. Pros: The menu changes every day, the food tastes pretty good, they also have vegetarian options, not required to leave a tip b/c its self-service. the BUFFET is a decent price and Naan and tea are included in the buffet. I gave them a two star rating b/c the food made our stomach hurt and they could learn to be a little nicer. read more

I tend to be a big fan of buffets, and I was very pleased with this one. I generally do not get to eat a lot of Indian food as my wife does not like curry. However this one had a very nice assortment and I found each dish I tried tasty. A buffet is particularly good when you are eatting a type of food you don't have often. It allowed me to try new dishes I normally would not think of trying. The staff was very friendly and the place was very clean. Had just come back from a cruise where Indian food was often offered, have to say the food here was much better. I do plan on going again. read more

I've been coming here for almost three years and I love it! Even though we moved to the other side of Boston, we still make the drive over to Curry House for their delicious food. I always get the vegetarian thali, which is three different entrees with rice, naan and raita. It's a ton of great food for a very good price. The staff are always very friendly and efficient, and I definitely recommend this place :) read more

I'm not rating the food, I never got that far. I called to order and then after calling me back and taking down what I wanted for delivery I was told it was a minimum $20 order for delivery. That is not stated on the brochures they left all over my apt hallway. As as single that only eats one entree, I can't get delivery from them basically. They should clearly state that on the menu so I don't waste my time sitting around for a call back to order delivery. They didn't mind taking the time to write on each brochure their increased prices... how about informing your customers of delivery minimums while you're at it! read more

The Food; Their Mango Lassi was great. The rest of the food was average. We enjoyed the different types of naan bread. Although the cheese one we didn't expect it to be like cottage cheese. The Service: We used a restaurant.com gift certificate and found it silly to pay 18.5% gratuity when the food was ordered and given cafeteria style, we had to clean our eating area by putting the dishes away, trays and glasses away ourselves, and you had to go to a different counter to get your own glasses and pour the water yourself. read more

Had been for a lunch buffet over the weekend, i regret having meal at curry house. It was worst. Just 4 choices of nonveg and veg dishes. Most of the dishes were odd tasting, no balance of spice. Being Indian, I could understand how tasteless these Indian dishes they were. Who adds broccoli to chicken Patiala? Chicken tikka tasted more like butter chicken. They need new chefs. To top it off, they didn't accept the 10% coupon, stating they don't accept this for buffet which was not mentioned in the offer. Just 1 suggestion, avoid. This was my first time experiencing Indian food, and it was great! I came here for the lunch buffet with a couple of friends and was very pleased with the selection that was offered. Since I had never tried Indian food before, I obviously didn't know what I liked, but the Curry House offered such a wide variety of dishes that I was able to try a bit of everything! read more

I have eaten here several times and have had both the buffet and regular menu. I would highly recommend the buffet, which gives you plenty of options. The naan is pretty good but keep in mind it takes a few minutes to prepare so it may take a while for them to bring it out. Last time I ate here I had a pretty bad stomach, I believe this is because the chicken vindaloo was quite spicy, so beware. Nevertheless I do recommend this place and will probably eat here again. read more

I originally ventured to this place as they are a participant in the AAdvantage dining program (allows one to earn American Airlines miles on their purchases) and was disappointed with the atmosphere, food, and service. First off, be advised that they do have a $10 credit card minimum which is specifically not permitted per the credit merchant agreement in place with Visa and Mastercard. The food is very bland and poorly presented. I ordered vegetarian samosas which seemed to have just been stuffed with chickpeas and no spice what so ever. Upon asking for chutney to accompany my samosas I was informed that would be $1 extra. Having dined at many Indian restaurants throughout the United States and UK I've never seen this practice but oh well. Bottom line: if you want good Indian food, skip Curry House and head to either nearby Punjab Palace or Indian Quality. read more

I went for the lunch buffet & it had some vegetarian options which was nice. The have a very nice decor & has a good amount of space for groups too. They make the naan fresh so I had to wait for it which was so necessary while I was eating. Only so much you can do. I think this Indian place should be checked out by all. I am not aware of the differences between northern & southern style Indian cooking so not sure which this is either. As long as what I am eating is tasty & people are friendly/helpful, I will go back. read more

We were very hungry and Rami's was closed. I remembered this Indian Cafeteria and we went there. This place has been replaced with a new owner. It looked like they still have their old menus. Food were cheap as usual. We had good time. Garlic naan, appetizer, two combos plus two beers only cost $30. No waiting with a lot of seating place. Good place to come back again. read more

I am upgrading from 4 stars to 5 because Curry House is so consistently good. We go almost once a week now and have yet to have a bad meal or experience. All below still holds true. Our family is pretty fussy about Indian food - we love it when it's good, but consider really good Indian food hard to find. We have, for instance, sworn off Rani, down the street from this place for.ev.er, and we were disappointed with Tamarind as well. The Curry House has great, flavorful food, at an affordable price - and it is a very fast meal. We know many of the cooking staff worked previously at the India Pavilion in Central Square, Cambridge (which we've always considered to be the best around.) Now, you don't go to The Curry House for ambiance - you get and pay for your food cafeteria-style, and the lighting and seating is also "fast food". But the food itself is quality - we are usually impressed with the chef specials - tonight they had lemon chicken and coconut chicken - both unique dishes, with complex Indian spices. The spicy dishes are really spicy - something that is a must in my book. Don't really understand the negative reviews except to say that some people aren't experienced with Indian food. For the price, the quality of the food at Curry House can't be beat - and in fact, the food itself is way better than the more expensive Rani a few doors down. read more

I feel like 3 stars is the perfect grade for this one. i got the chicken tikka masala entree which comes with naan or rice. also got the veggie samosa, which was really good. the chicken was fine, not the best, not the worse while the naan was great. overall, its pretty cheap too, just don't expect amazing food or service. read more

can i add much to understanding this joint? maybe. i've read a lot of reviews of CH in many places. in my travels, i just happened to be in Coolidge Corner at 1:30pm this week and thought "hey now, there's the CH, i'm hungry, let's go!" the seemingly only real option other than takeout is to sit down and do the Lunch Buffet. there were 3 meat and 3 vegetarian hot options, plus basmati rice which looked dried out, so i did not try it. since it did not have that fabulous aroma, i'm thinking it may have been jasmine rice instead. boo. nobody greeted me when entering and it was not clear what the protocol was. the layout is cafeteria-like and unappealing. i chose to walk to the register and was warmly greeted there. i told the man it was my first visit and he nicely said "welcome to the Curry House!" good save. i asked to have the buffet, and asked "pay first or after?" folks: it's pay first. there is a problem there: the staff are unlikely to get tips, and looking at the other tables, i was right. no tips. this appears to be a family business, as the interaction of the staff was awfully familiar. not a bad thing, just observing, and a teen daughter was helping, reluctantly, but helping. i was offered, did not have to ask, if i'd like fresh nan with my meal. no cost was mentioned, so i said "yes please." holy crap... it was FRESH as could be. piping hot, crisp, moist and tender when it arrived at my table. this place is otherwise, ultra self-serve. you grab a plate, your food and then your silverware, truly the cheapest serviceware ever, and your napkins and head bad to your table which you've self-selected... assuming one is clean. i was disappointed in that the place was not busy (maybe 12 patrons at 5 tables) and there were many tables dirty near the buffet. not good for me, since i have mobility issues. almost loudly, there was a popmusic video channel playing on the hifi and the flatscreen near the buffet. i enjoy Bollywood musicvids, so it was fun. few people noticed it, or the rather featureless decor. it could be so much more interesting. i mean, hey... India and surrounding nations have some history of art, culture... ah well. what? the food? i tried the tandoor chicken masala, rich and orange, curry chicken, vegetable korma, palak paneer and skipped the plain tandoor chicken, but got some nice pakora. so, first impression? SALT. omg... salty. i have to hope that they are not buying salted masalas or mixing them with salt. i make this food, as well as other eastern cuisines and middle eastern cuisines myself, and this was just plain salty. once i got over that, i liked the rich flavor of the masala sauce, though it could have used a bit of heat. it was very mild. the curry was surprisingly mild. take the salt away and add some heat and you have a lovely relatively thin textured curry sauce that should permeate rice beautifully... assuming it's not dry. both sauces were far too salty. i've complained about saltiness at other Indian places and they've fixed the problem. i hope that CH does, too. the pakora... really really nice. expertly cooked, just the right crispiness, nice flavor, excellent size, not too big, not too small. these are two-biters and ideal for soaking whatever sauce you dredge them through. i like the pakora. the korma... oh dear. the sauce is good, salty but good. turn down the salt... it's not hot, but it's flavorful. here's the thing: stringy veggies. okra? it's not for everyone. the cashews tasted nice as a seasoning, but they were overcooked. add them later in the recipe. this could be a great dish... it's close. the nan. yum. that is all. just yum! back to the chicken, a key part of Indian cuisine: tandoor chicken put into a sauce to cook further usually results in dried chicken-erites. not here. CH must have made a deal with Shiva for the most moist and tender tandoor chicken ever, because even after simmering in masalas, it is very tender, moist and has that "fall apart in your mouth" quality that excellent NC or AR barbecue has. i cannot express how surprised i was at the texture of the chicken! it was just stunningly good! i did not even get around to condiments, which they do have in the buffet, but will again next visit. they looked "right." i had the kheer for dessert. it tasted good. there were no nuts, which i find there are half the time in different places. it was thinner than i'm used to, and the rice was just a TINY bit over absorbed of moisture, but i put that to timing. if i'd dined an hour earlier, it would have been different. creamy but thin base, nice flavor, just the right sweetness and noticeable rosewater flavor. i liked it, even if it was not quite "right." it was pleasant. for under $9 with meal tax, nice deal, not killer, but in Brookline? who knew? tasty but SALTY... too salty for this boychik. i'll talk to them next visit. i think they can do better! read more

Interesting place- not quite a fast food place but they have a buffet where you are served a few choices depending on what you want. The aroma inside is great- that is why I tried this place, I walked by it and the smell was wonderful. I loved the saag paneer dish, the chicken tikka massala was just fair- a bit disappointing- little flavor and kind of bland. This was the worst experience in dining in! Rude staff didn't want to give us simple yogurt sauce or even a proper take away container without charging extra. If i had ordered for pick up and then ate there it would have been not a problem but if you dine in and then ask for take away it it's a problem. The food was cold the butter chicken smelled like old chicken i cannot recommend going back to this place. I never went when this place was called "Gourmet India" so maybe that's why I think it's fine just the way it is. The people are friendly, but shy...which can often be mistaken for rudeness I suppose. The food is tasty, especially for the price. The buffet has a small selection, yet never fails to disappoint. I love the chicken marsala here; so creamy and good. It's not the best, but CERTAINLY not the worst. Just your run of the mill Indian restaraunt. A safe bet, reliable menu, etc. Alot of people on here keep praising Rani down the street. I think it's jazzed up inside and overpriced. You're paying for the fancy place, not better food. So keep that in mind. In fact, I used to go to both of them often when I worked over in Brookline. Now, I ONLY go to the Curry House. It's affordable, friendlier, and the buffet actually has MORE food?!?! The fact that this place is rated so poorly is just proof that people in Boston don't understand Indian food. As someone who has regularly eaten Indian food made by Indians in India, I can tell you unequivocally that this is one of the rare joints in Boston that actually passes muster. Reviewers here will tell you to go to Rani or Punjab Palace or whatever, but what they won't tell you is that these places are extremely whitified. What I mean by this is that the food at any of these places is comparatively flavorless. So after that initial inhale of your chicken tikki masala, you'll notice as you start to chew that the chicken itself wasn't cooked properly -- it tastes only like, well, greasy chicken. Like they dropped some KFC into masala sauce at the last minute. It's criminal! Meanwhile, their vindaloos are as spicy as cotton candy. At Gourmet Curry House, every bite is just...god this sounds lame but...bursting with flavor. The meat is tender, juicy, and absolutely savory. Masala sauce and curry are top-notch; vindaloo is not bad (not as spicy as it probably should be, but diners in this city seem to demand tameness across all genres of food); the vegetable samosas are well-seasoned without the grease that comes with fried food; and the naan is made fresh. (Just be aware that if you get garlic naan, you should be prepared for a LOT of garlic.) To the people who complain about not getting rice AND naan, please shut up. This isn't spaghetti and naan isn't your side of bread. You either eat the sauce with rice and a fork, or you scoop it up with naan. That's it. That's how it works. To the people who complain about being shortchanged, I dunno what to tell you: I eat here regularly without problems. I order take-out regularly without problems. Either way, one dollar shouldn't equal one star when you admit the food is great. To the people who complain about portions, I just don't understand you. No, it's not nearly as much as what you get at, say, Punjab Palace. But it's not paltry. You're not being starved or deprived. One way to think about is you could have a good-sized meal of good-tasting food or twice as much that's half as flavorful. To the people who complain that the people are unfriendly...well touche. They are kinda robotic. Then again, if I knew I was cooking damn fine food that was being ignored for crappy white-people reinterpretations, I'd be mad too. Bottom line is this: GCH is not perfect. You will not have a perfect reproduction of an Indian family meal. It's a cafeteria for crissakes. But among the offerings in Boston, it's severely underrated. read more

Having a yen for Indian food my family decided to try the Curry House for the first time, using the delivery service. The food arrived within a reasonable time, but it was Barely warm. There was a missing item and my daughter called to inform them and was rudely told that the item was included and that she should look again, which she did and informed the person that the item was still missing. The restaurant was not going to 'make good' and hung up. The items we did receive were good, once reheated, except there was a minimum amount of sauce on each dish. Dishes appeared to be lacking some of the traditional flavours and spices, rice was hard and under cooked.... Will try eating in the restaurant to compare but will not use the take out service again. read more
