I went to the curry house today for the first time. We had the buffet. The food is pretty good, especially the Chicken Tikka Masala. The people who work there are not extremely friendly, but I was prepared for that from reading other reviews. This place is like the Subway of Indian cuisine; you tell the person at the counter what you want and they scoop it from vats onto a plate for you. I got the chicken tikka masala and found it to be very blah. Not terrible, but nothing special either. There are a couple other Indian restaurants in the area that I like better: Rani (more upscale/more expensive) and Shan-A-Punjab (nice sit-down place that isn't overly expensive; they also have buffets and delivery). Very disappointed with their staff and serving policies. I've been going to Curry House about once or twice a month for almost five years. The food has always been good. The samosa chaat, naan and vegetable korma are great. But I've never liked the service. And after today, I won't be going back. As I mentioned, I go there on a regular basis so you would think they would now recognize me (five years later) and say hello or at least smile. But the woman that usually works the food counter has never acknowledge my regular patronage. She always seems bitter or annoyed and mumbles so most customers can't understand her. The manager only sometimes says hello. Only the guy that cooks the Naan bread smiles, nods his head in a friendly recognition. Today, I ordered the large vegetable korma and the woman asked me if I wanted extra rice. I said, if I order a large dish, doesn't it come with a large rice? She said no, all dishes come with the small rice. I realized then that that was why I'm always short on rice -- it never occurred to me they were cheap on the rice. I argued with the woman and told that that was silly. If I'm sharing the large entrée, then we both will need rice to go with it. A small rice will not be enough. She said I could order extra rice. I was not able to persuade her to change the policy. I told her that was ridiculous and that they would be losing a regular customer and that I would not be coming back if that was their policy. She repeated I could buy more rice or could talk to the manager who wasn't there. I can't imagine that the extra rice would cost them more than five cents for which they would charge me an extra few dollars. I don't know how much, but it was the principle of not getting a large rice with a large entrée. They saved five cents but lost the order and a customer as I walked out. For me, this was the last straw. I had put up with the lack of customer recognition, lack of a friendly smile or even a hello. But I also had been baffled watching them fill a take out container but then remove 1/2 a spoon of the entrée. It wasn't that it was going to overflow or the lid wouldn't shut, but the server decided she was giving me too much. Another case of penny wise and pound foolish. My final grip -- when I check out, they put the order into a small paper bag. If it is a large order, I need a plastic bag to carry it or the paper bag will break. (I know the environmentalists will tell me to take my own bag, that is another argument). To open the plastic bag, they wet their fingers by sticking them into the ice bin on the counter top that is cooling the drinks. I know that ice isn't used in drinks, but I find that rather disturbing. They should never be sticking their fingers into the ice bin has food / drinks in it. The food is really good. But the service leaves a LOT to be desired. read more

This was the worst experience in dining in! Rude staff didn't want to give us simple yogurt sauce or even a proper take away container without charging extra. If i had ordered for pick up and then ate there it would have been not a problem but if you dine in and then ask for take away it it's a problem. The food was cold the butter chicken smelled like old chicken i cannot recommend going back to this place. I am a HUGE fan of Indian food and had such a craving for it. I ordered delivery from Curry House at 5:00pm on a Sunday evening. I was surprised to hear that it would take between 45 minutes and an hour to deliver at what I would normally consider an "off-peak" delivery time. ... it's ok ... worth it for Indian, right? I waited over an hour and 15 minutes to receive my food, half of which was cold. Parts appeared fine, but tasted burnt. My chana masala was spicy, but somehow watery, oily, and bland. In my experience, this is definitely the "fast food" version of Indian. It seems that Chef Boyardee is to Italian as Curry House is to Indian. Poor food, slow service, and at a $30 cost for 2 people, I'd say it's definitely not worth it. read more

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Boston. It is casual cafeteria style, but the food is always delicious and fresh. The breads are prepared to order and are excellent. The atmosphere is much nicer than in a typical cafeteria restaurant--nice bright colors and Indian decorations. The staff is very friendly. The prices are very reasonable for the quality, which I think is better than at many of the sit down Indian restaurants in Boston that I have tried. I am at a loss to understand why it is not more highly rated on Yelp. read more

I will begin this review by saying that I have never eaten at this restaurant, and based on my experience last night I can say without a doubt that I never, ever will. Please allow me to explain -- I work in a luxury high-rise condominium building in Boston as a concierge and am quite accustomed to rudeness from time to time from those whose salaries are way above mine, but nothing can compare to the threat of incivility I received at the hands of one of the delivery drivers for Curry House. As a matter of our strict protocol all food deliveries to our clients MUST GO through our Security Office, so I explained this to the driver and was told that "I'm not going around this block anymore.", even though that entrance is about 30 steps away from the lobby and he forced me to phone my client to come downstairs (the hour and forty-five minute delivery time notwithstanding). Between the time I called him and he came downstairs I was thoroughly and completely insulted by this "gentleman" because I relayed a message that my client was not happy about the entire delivery experience, and was told REPEATEDLY to "shut up" directly to my face. As I stated before I do encounter rudeness during my regular work day, but this is absolutely unacceptable behavior and completely uncalled for. The driver left and I had a short conversation with my client as to where this delivery was coming from, so I am certain I have the correct restaurant. I called Curry House immediately afterwards and talked to a woman (she said that she was the wife of the owner) and I gave her the complete story of what had just transpired. She insisted that she would tell her manager to call me back to follow-up. More than 24 hours later I am still waiting for that call, which only tells me that this must be a prevailing attitude that extends from the owner on down to the order-taker. As a customer service professional for the last 20-odd years I for one know that it is IMPERATIVE to give customers a reason to frequent your business, and if there is a problem it MUST be dealt with immediately! Satisfied patrons are the lifeblood of any business, and those who are not satisfied will tell their friends to make other choices, deservedly or undeservedly, but that is the nature of running a successful business (restaurants especially, as many members of my family can tell you about their firsthand knowledge of this fact). If this had been one of my employees they would have been fired on the spot and removed from the lobby by Security. Outrageous and insulting behavior. read more

so i had read the reviews on Rani Indian Bistro, an indian resturant in coolidge corner offering a $10 buffet. just so you all dont make the mistake this is not rani. i thought i had come to the right resturant as i couldnt really remember the name, but hey how many indian buffets could there be in coolidge corner. that being said the food is good, quite good. 4 star good but they get -1 star for trickery. the naan was good and did very well being dipped into some of the chutneys they offered. The Chicken Tikka was also good topped by the Chicken Do-Piazza and Chicken Tikka Masala, they also had ground chicken my girlfriend really liked. The chicken in all dishes was great, very tender and juicy. After eating we decided to walk up beacon st the other direction and thats when we saw rani and realized we were at the wrong place. Rani was much busier and had a nicer decor but dont pass up Gourmet Curry House as they are quite good also. read more

Ok for under $10 including tax you can't get better 2 dish Indian food for dinner in Boston. I'm going to say it. The chicken curry dish I had which was chicken tikka masala with cashews in it (can't remember the name) was great and so was the zucchini vegetable curry. I haven't had better out here and I better for the money would be tough to find even in the bay area (home). I like that you pick rice or naan and then two of their many options in the buffet bar- it's simple, easy and inexpensive and gives me everything that I want in portion sizes that leave me completely full and happy. I recommend the tables by the windows. Highly recommend for those looking for simple, good food that's cheap. read more

This is a very good indian restaurant and fast food place. The samosas are good, not loaded with red chili powder that some other indian places seem to think is appealing but it's not. I only eat the veg curries here but I've tried them all and they have flavor and I always go back for 2nds at buffet time. The only thing is their saag panner should have some cumin or some more seasoning as that's the only curry that is a bit bland. They make great butternut squash curry but it's not on the menu and only offered at random times. I wish they put that curry on the menu. There's a good variety to choose from. The space isn't bad, it's spacious, and the boss guy cares about what you think of the food. Nice prices. Dosas are only sold on weekends. read more

Previous reviews told about paying before getting buffet so that was helpful. First major issue was that buffet hardly had anything for veggies. Pakodas were good but beyond that it was hopeless. I could prepare better dal and sag paneer than they did. Even for non-veg guys, the taste wasn't great. Overall on the front of taste it was poor. Kheer and Pakodas were the only saving grace. Went here for the lunch buffet one afternoon, selection was fairly limited but OK. Nothing was particularly remarkable but it wasn't bad either, and with the buffet price I thought it was a pretty decent deal. Don't bother with the chicken tandoori because it is dry as heck. The chicken masala was pretty good though. Setting was clean, colorful, and bright. Moved from Boston to NYC ~20 years ago and was sad to leave behind, among other things, the outstanding Indian restaurant India Samraat, which I frequented every week without fail. And even more disappointed a few years ago to return and find they had closed. Fortunately, India Samraat's tradition lives on at Curry House in Brookline. A pleasure to see Dalvir and his wife and to savor their delicious food again. Still living in NYC but will certainly be visiting Curry House as often as my schedule allows. I had dinner here for the first time and really enjoyed it! They don't have table service but rather you order up front. The curries are served cafeteria style and the naan is cooked to order. I tried the saag paneer, mixed vegetable curry, brown rice and onion naan. The food was flavorful without being too greasy or creamy. I also liked that they offered brown rice. I was pretty disappointed with Curry House! I've been wanting to trying it for weeks, and ordered the Seekh Kabab (lamb) and rice. The rice was plan white rice with no seasoning or flavor, more like Chinese restaurant rice. The lamb was VERY dry and the portion was small. I payed $16 in total and am very disappointed.
