But We've been back several times since for buffet and take out, which have both been outstanding. The buffet offers a rather large array of interesting options, differing every time. I came on a Saturday evening, and was welcomed at the door with scents of various warm, exotic Indian spices. Having been a lover of Indian food from the first time I tried it, I was immediately excited. I started my meal with some samosas. Absolutely delicious. The balance of spices left me in a state of bliss. The texture was perfect and the samosas were not super heavy. They were scrumptious. For my entrée, I had the butter chicken on a medium spice level along with basmati rice. The chicken was cooked to absolute perfection with the most balanced blend of cumin, garam masala, and ginger. The rice was just perfect. It was a gentle light side to the earthy, spicy, beautiful butter chicken. I was on Cloud Nine. The service was friendly, patient, and polite. Never thought I'd find authentic Tamilian food in a restaurant in Grand Rapids. Was in GR for a business meeting and looked up Vegetarian places near by to eat. Found Curry Leaf on Yelp and it had some great reviews by other Indians. When I went the restaurant was pretty empty. I was craving a lot of the South Indian foods on the menu so I got Idli, Mysore Malasa Dosa and Ennai Kathirikkai with roti. Everything was delicious! The idlis were perfect consistency, soft and fluffy and the sambar spicy and delicious. The dosa was quite large and the potato palya inside was great. The Ennai Kathirikkai was spicy and delicious. I spoke with the owner afterwards and found out he is from Chennai. Would definitely recommend to anyone craving authentic Indian food (they have both North and South Indian on the menu) in Grand Rapids. read more

Authenticity is hard to find. We have a few favorite Indian restaurants in both Los Angeles and New York but we discovered this gem when visiting family in Grand Rapids. This is South Indian food in all its delicious and spicy (and we like it SPICY) glory. We had a huge family dinner here for our Aunt's birthday and had the pleasure of quite a few dishes and loved all of them! In fact, the wife and I returned the next day for dinner to get a couple of things that we wanted to try before heading back to LA. Wow! This place is so yummy! We came in too hungry and ordered too much food, but it was all wonderful! We started with Pakoda Onion and and Samosa Chaat. I will dream of the Samosa Chaat! Mom had the Chicken Tikka Masala - some of the best I've ever tasted. It was perfect for someone who doesn't like a lot of spice. It was so rich and creamy! My husband and I shared the lamb Passionate Korma and the goat Traditional Chettinad. OH MY GOSH! To die for! As if we didn't already have enough food, we tried both the garlic and the butter naan. Again, I'll be dreaming of the garlic naan! We also loved the lassie. Yes, we took home more than we ate at the restaurant...! The servers at the restaurant must have been reading the Yelp reviews, because the service was outstanding! Cheers to finding a way to make it even better! This used to be the best Indian restaurant in Grand Rapids and my husband who is from India would agree! We used to order here at least a few times a month and large orders too (biryani, cauliflower maunchurian, samosa chaat, curries, etc). Starting about 1-2 months ago we noticed the food completely changed and for the worse. It started with samosa chaat that was dry and seemed like it was made the day before or left out and I got sick after eating it (maybe the yogurt based sauce went bad?). The curries we always ordered (paneer bhurji and paneer tikka masala) were now just watered down curry sauce with chunks of paneer that had zero flavor or spice and none of the onions, peppers and green leaves that were in it before. This occurred two times b/c we assumed the first time was a fluke or just a bad night. After the second time when placing our third order we called to see if they are still making their usual recipe, the woman on the phone told me they never changed. I explained we have gone here for years and we never had the food taste like this, she checked with the chef to see if he could make the order to our usual expectations and the food was still just as bad. The paneer tika masala used to always have onions and peppers in it and my husband confirmed as well as my brother in law who also USED to order frequently. We spoke with a man we have not seen often who I think is one of the owners and he said no the curry dish never had onions or peppers. Very confused as to the drastic change. My husband picked up the food and found out they changed their chef (huge mistake!). We have decided to no longer return or waste money on food of this quality which is unfortunate b/c we loved their food and the buffet. This is usually our favorite Indian in Grand Rapids, but the last couple of times it hasn't been as good. I always get the butter chicken, which a year ago was consistently perfect; but the last two times I ordered it, the meat tasted weird, with a rubbery texture. I don't know quite how to describe it, because the sauce was still delicious but the chicken itself just tasted bad, like it might have been a day too old or something. I didn't get sick, but after ordering one more time and having the same bad experience, I'm reluctant to order again. Terrible service. I've eaten here once before and I loved the food but I'll never go back. Hours say they close at 10, so I called at 9:30 for a takeout order. No answer, but I was really in the mood for some butter chicken and it's close to where I live so I drove by to see if they were closed. At 9:45 I walked in past people walking out with takeout and the inside had several tables still eating. I asked if I could make a takeout order and the cashier rudely waved me away and said no more orders tonight. Hell of a way to run a business. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I was the only non-Indian in the place, so maybe that's why. The restaurant has only been around for a year or two and in a really crappy location. I'd give the normal menu every bit of 4 stars but where this place shines is the lunch buffet. They don't completely tone down the spice for the buffet like other indian places. They put out hot, fresh, delicious food. They seem to have different things to try everytime and there is always something new and excellent. Careful though that heat can build. Not a real buffet! Tried to eat at the buffet there.The food was the same as you would get at any other India buffet. They took my silverware, place setting, water glass, everything, when I would get up to get more food. They did it three times! This was a wonderful surprise! The parking lot doesn't invite you in but the lunch buffet certainly does. They has plenty of tasty options to choose from and lots of vegetarian options as well. Wow... just wow! My sister and I came here after an event we ordered the Dosa, the Curry Leaf house special, and lamb biryani on a whim. We were not disappointed one bit! These aromatic Southern Indian spices filled our belly's with joy and warmth. Having been born in India, in the South, Curry Leaf was quite a find. They have a good assortment, and the food is healthy and authentic.

My husband heard this restaurant was really good so we had to try it. The menu was extensive, the waiter was helpful and gave us great advice on what to order. They even accommodated my dairy allergy by recommending dishes without ghee. The food was out of this world delicious. We ordered the traditional chettinad with lamb and the alapi shrimp curry.
