Ever since I found this place, I've been obsessed! I got my usual butter chicken and my friend got the chicken biryani. I tried some of her food so I can confirm both our foods were delicious! Also, can we admire the presentation? Most Indian restaurants that I've been to will close in the middle of the day for a couple hours, so I love that this place stays open 11am-8:30pm. I also appreciate that you can dine in or take out! I've been here twice and I still don't understand why it's never busy when I go. Of course I love that I can get my food pretty fast, but I wonder if people just don't know about it. It's in a strip mall next to Horrocks so there's a lot to do in the area and plenty of parking. Not sure why this place was dead during lunch? Their food is delicious! Maybe because it's in such an unassuming spot in the strip mall. Regardless, I'm really happy that I stopped in. I found some reviews from the EatGR page that recommended the Thali since it's like a sampler platter for one, so I went with the Lamb Thali. I asked for medium spice, and it came out more mild for my taste. The food was steaming hot and you get a lot of meat! 4 large pieces of Naan bread, a bowl of rice, a platter of yogurt that you can mix into the food to tame the spice, some lentil soup, potatoes and chickpeas, and some cucumber slices. All for the price of $17.99, which is totally worth it in my opinion. I was famished and still couldn't manage to eat all of the food. Service was fast, the staff are friendly, and everything was very clean. I'm pretty sure my plate and silverware came out hot, too. I'll be coming by here for lunch more often! read more

I was inspired by Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown episode to Punjab where the focus on Kulcha really appealed to me. The Onion Kulcha is superb here as is the Thali. The dish comes with chicken curry and rice along with lentil soup, rajma, papad, cucumber salad and yogurt with gulab jamun and naan. The Kulcha is in its own basket. I have been looking for momos in US since I had them in India. This is the only place that I was able to find in GR area that had them. I ordered the steamed chicken and veggie momos and butter chicken with naan. The steamed chicken momos were fantastic! I loved them! The filling had a great flavor and the sauce was spicy. If you can't handle spice it might be a bit too much. Also, for 8.99 there are a decent amount of momos. The veggie momos had a weird filling taste, I probably will not order those again. I was hoping for more from them. The butter chicken and naan were both really good. I would say this was the best butter chicken in GR that I have had. This place is right next to the Horrocks Market, so a perfect place to grab an Indian meal after your grocery shopping. The decor is humble and nothing fancy. But this is one of those rare joints where you get pretty good north Indian/ Nepali cuisine. Specially if you're curious about Nepali food, you must try the "momo". We went there to grab some lunch after doing the groceries and the chicken thali (multi course meal with chicken curry, lentils, rajma, naan, green salad, papad, yogurt, gulab jamun) didn't disappoint at all. The thing we liked about the food is that it's very different from most of the other Indian restaurants in GR due to the use of northern spices. Indian food, like pizza, is a cuisine that I REALLY have to be in the mood for. The rich sauces, the non-Western proteins, and the confusing medley of spices are a venture into the unknown for this homebody. And somehow I always find myself journeying back to Desi Spice. Perhaps it's the restaurant's proximity to my two favorite grocery stores, Horrocks and Asian Delight. Perhaps it's the proximity to my own home, tucked away in the increasingly diverse corridor bridging Grand Rapids and Kentwood. Whatever the reason, I consistently arrive starved and depart with a satisfied, bulging belly, the aromas of fenugreek and cardamom clinging to my hair. Tonight's itinerary included garlic naan that was freshly toasted with visible chopped garlic pieces pressed into the pillowy dough. The chicken biryani entree could feed three adults, or one ravenous me. (It seems as though the hospitality standard here is: enjoy now, and enjoy again tomorrow; that's Four Seasons service in my book.) The biryani was served with a cucumber-yogurt sauce that I could have drank directly from it's dipping bowl, had I not minded my table manners. The goat curry swam in a complex spicy sauce, the tender meat sliding easily off the bones like butter. My stomach is as stretched as it is post-Embassy Suites breakfast buffet, and yet I can hardly wait for a Desi Spice leftovers lunch tomorrow. How? Perhaps I'm a glutton. The place was a bit stuffy at first, but it cleared out after little while. Despite this unusual setting, we still enjoyed our meal as the staff were friendly and the food was wonderful. First time at Desi Spice so I went with the standard order - Dal Makhani, samosas, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala to go. Heat level was 'warm' but the spice mix was a fantastic surprise. Chicken tikka masala is sometimes served a bit on the sweet side with the cool of green cardamom against the heat. I was expecting something close to that, but instead was pleasantly surprised with much more star anise ... bright and warm in a much different aromatic mix, and far less sugar. Absolutely fantastic, and they didn't skimp on the sauce one bit. All the other touches - naan + samosas were great. HIGHLY recommend and now I want to explore the Nepalese side of the menu. I ordered the food from door dash as I was down with flu.. was hoping to get some comfort food but they sent me food which could kill us!! The Vegetable Chowmein had just red chili and some raw spices without any salt in it. My son was all red after taking the first bite. The Chola Bhatura's Bhatura was soaking in oil and tasted raw and bitter.. I called the restaurant and the manager I spoke with was not even apologetic about it.. said we got a new cook so maybe that's why you got more spice.. I asked her to refund me the entire amount and take back the food if she likes.. I am going to throw in either ways!! I want to note that I've rarely eaten this type of food as well, so ordering it I'm always apprehensive. The explanations of how the dishes are prepared are so helpful! My wife and I came in on a Sunday fairly late- about 8:30 P.M. - and it was not very busy. Very clean and quiet, with two other tables seated. They were playing some very loud music but that's ok- it's their language and they want to jam, whatever. I had a mango lassi - delicious- and we started with chicken momo which they served with a delicious trio of sauces- two chutneys and a soy based sauce. The momo were really good, lots of chicken and veggies. I ordered butter chicken with raita, which was really savory and delicious although not quite as creamy as it usually is. It was spicy, but not too spicy. My wife had chicken tikka masala, which was spicier and less buttery but had even more complex flavors. The star of the show, however, was this chicken! The chicken in Indian dishes is often dry and not particularly tasty, but this was so tender and juicy, marinated in yogurt and deliciously flavorful and lightly charred in some spots. I think it was cooked in the tandoori oven. I will dream of this chicken! Lol! All in all we had a nice dinner experience at Desi Spice and we will come again. read more

I stumbled upon this place, and oh how happy I am to have found it. I finally feel like I can make Grand Rapids my home--having found an Indian restaurant that I love. I walked in to take a look at the menu, and as I saw customers eating with their hands, I immediately felt at ease and that I had made the right decision walking in! The biryani is excellent, it's exactly how my mom makes it-- with whole pieces of spices, like cardamom, and curry leaves. I asked for it to be spicy, and it was made nice and hot. I also had the lamb curry, which was extremely tender. Sometimes lamb can have a funky smell, but this one did not! I've eaten at several other Indian restaurants in Grand Rapids and have yet to find a tender lamb, so this is huge! They treated us like QUEENS! I went to Desi Spice with my sisters, as we were celebrating a birthday. The service was really good; they checked on us frequently and helped us understand the menu. We had a wonderful time. For appetizers, the waiter recommended the Nepali Momos (dumplings): exquisite! We also had the crispy potato cakes. Also very yummy. Their chutneys are made with hand-ground spices and all the entrees we tried were delicious. I ordered from the Nepali menu, a Thali tray that had a full 5 course meal all in one menu item (I didn't realize that when I ordered but we planned to take home more than what we ate at the table that night). Other dishes were traditional Indian restaurant items: chicken byrani and chicken tikka. We enjoyed every bite... a little bit too much, as it seems way to easy to overeat when the food in front of you is so flavorful. We were very impressed with the service. I've had Indian food all over the map. I've been at restaurants that range from pretty good (it's hard to make curry taste terrible) to head swooning. This restaurant lies on the latter end of the spectrum. Besides serving really good food, two things put it over the top for me: 1) They offer Nepalese food. I can get butter chicken anywhere. Menus at Indian restaurants tend to offer the same Northern Indian food because that's what we're used to, it's what we want. I like variety. Order something off the menu from Nepal, and be fascinated at how its similar to Indian food but also its own thing with its own flavors. Get the Thali...pick your meat. 2) The array of dishes that comes out with their Thali dinner. How fun. Oh, and the copper water glasses are cool. Don't go if you're in a rush, and don't make that the basis of whether you like it or not. I've pretty much learned that there are a lot of nationalities who don't seem to expect servers to run around and rush meals out so people can gobble them up and then quickly pay the bill.
