First time trying this spot out! The food was absolutely delicious and everyone was pleased with what they ordered! But ambiance and service are what docked the points down for me a bit. I found that the server was really awkward and hard to understand. A friend ordered butter chicken and he told her she couldn't order that because it's too commonly ordered. This may be funny to some but I found that extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional. The interior was also decorated but it was unfinished in some parts and a little confusing. Overall would return here but would honestly prefer takeout to avoid a weird interaction again.

My friends and I were looking for a place to have dinner on a Monday evening -- not always the easiest in Grand Rapids as many places are closed. Madras Indian Grill was suggested and everyone seemed excited as most of us hadn't been there before and we were craving Indian food. The restaurant is pretty large and we were one of a few parties dining in. The menu is huge, with lots of great options for vegetarians, but be careful if you have a nut allergy as many items have cashews and/or almonds. Our friend was directed to the chicken vindaloo which doesn't have cashews. I like that they also feature south Indian items as well as Indo-Chinese dishes. They also have non-alcoholic drinks and desserts. We started with two orders of the veggie samosas, which were excellent. I find that sometimes samosas can be dry, but not these! The mint and tamarind sauces were flavorful and tasty. I'd get these every time. For my entree, I got the palak paneer and also the chicken hakka noodles, as I've never had them before. We also got two orders of garlic naan and an order of paratha. Our food came out pretty quickly and everything was so good. I loved the flavors of the palak paneer (although it was not spicy at all -- I ordered it "American medium spicy") and the textures of the hakka noodles. I couldn't believe the portion sizes in relation to price -- the entrees were all around $12-$14 and were generous portions as we all had leftovers. Our server was kind of roasting us for our orders (telling us the butter chicken was bad and we should order something else, commenting on our spice level preferences, etc.). They have a lunch buffet Friday-Sunday that I really want to check out (they said the menu rotates for that and you can find the items on their social media), but otherwise I think this will be a good takeout spot for me. It took quite a bit of time for us to get our checks and to-go containers. But I'm so glad I got to try this food and I'll be eating my way through the menu!

Went on the weekend for the lunch buffet. Paid $15ish and it was soooo worth it! We tried many new things and were excited to see some of our faithful favorites. The restaurant is super modern and nicely decorated. For lunch you sit in a smaller section and the servers were quick about refilling drinks and making suggestions of which foods to pair together! If you like what u see in the front case: desserts, mango lassi, etc. they're available for lunch as well. Don't skip the cucumber lime drink. It's super refreshing! Pro-tip if you like to chat or plan to stay a while go earlier in the lunch buffet hours (11-2:30) because they close the whole restaurant after lunch for cleaning and a staff break!

So I have to really preference this... I really do like the food here and I will probably come back, but I will probably only get take out! Here's why: Food: 5/5 Price: 4/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Service: 2/5 My friends and I decided to check this out and I feel like it's a new Indian spot to all of us. We all really enjoyed our food and for the price? It seems pretty good! But unfortunately, the service and ambiance just didn't hit. The decor was really minimal and it felt like they didn't really care about making it feel cozy or homey inside. I honestly felt like I was sitting in a fast food restaurant. Any time I go to an Indian spot, I try the same few things because I really want to see how I like it - I either get Chicken Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken with naan (yes, it's basic and I'm well aware of this, but I like what I like when I'm feeling comfort food). The server just gave me shit for it and told me to order something else. I asked why and he said "It's bad, order something else." I asked... "Is it actually bad?" and he goes "Well, it's just too common, order something else" and I proceeded to say, "I'd like to order the butter chicken" then he let me but then when we got to the spice level, he said "American spicy or Indian spicy" and given we had no idea what their spice level was there, we all opted for "American spicy" because we didn't want to burn our faces off, and some don't feel comfortable with heat, and he just gave us shit for that too. While he may have been trying to be funny, after the first comment or two, he just let it linger too long and it was uncomfortable and unprofessional. One of our friends also has a severe tree nut allergy and he did offer suggestions but suggested an item that clearly had cashews in it? What? Then offered something else that did not. She did not have issues with her allergies, which is great! So I'm glad she was okay and they take allergens seriously but I fear that I may be placing online orders only to avoid getting roasted for my "basic" orders for liking what I like. You can see from our pictures, we all ordered different things to try and sample, so why not just let us try what we want? Will I order Indian spice level next time? Yes. But I will not be going in to order and eating there? No. It also took 40 minutes for us to get our check because he didn't want to come back to our table after a certain point and when he gave us to go containers, they didn't give us lids, so we had to wait even longer. It just wasn't the best experience. Maybe they were having an off day. All in all, the food was good but the service and ambiance makes it really hard for me to enjoy and come back except for take out.

Madras has a great lunch buffet Fri, Sat, and Sun. These are pics from Friday. An employee told us there are even MORE entrees on Saturdays and Sundays. Everything was excellent. Really GOOD flavor. My only complaint is, I'm a spice wimp and some dishes were too spicy for me. My hubs thought it was perfect (he's not a spice wimp, but he also cannot do very spicy). Staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Service: very attentive staff. Manager explained the house special and what region it is from in India. Really kind and friendly. Food: fresh and flavorful! Many dishes I've never had so it was fun trying some new dishes.

Have been here twice, once for buffet and once for the regular menu. Both times was excellent! Off the menu i got palak paneer and garlic Naan, both were great and also great as leftovers. I also shared samosas with friends and everyone I was with enjoyed their meals. We came for a Sunday lunch buffet and I found it to be a great spread. There were some dishes I was familiar with and some not, a great variety and plenty to eat especially if you're not super picky and like trying new things. I loved the mushroom 65. The buffet also had mango Lassi (milkshake) and coffee, which you don't usually see and was a great touch. There were a couple dessert options which I really enjoyed too.

The food here is so flavorful and spicy! They have a veggie side and a meat side, and often have fresh pressed juice and chai or hot milk in a carafe, all homemade. Service is great and the food is fresh and hot. I love how they offer a variety of meats, not just the usual butter chicken and Tikka masala. They usually have goat and fish options in addition to chicken and veg.

As a Bangladeshi here in Grand Rapids, I am always on the lookout for South Asian restaurants in town! Madras is a new Indian spot that my parents (the ultimate South Asian food critics) have been raving about since they opened - so I finally had the chance to try it out myself! I was so satisfied by this meal. I thought everything we got was full of flavor, and you can tell that the food is being freshly made. We started out with the Masala Dosa, Gobi Manchurian, and the Chicken Pakoda. Soo good! The dosa had the perfect crispiness, my mouth is watering as I write about it And the spice level was also perfect! For entrees we got paratha with the butter chicken and kadai chicken. Altogether, this was more than enough food for the four of us. The chai and the carrot halwa were also the perfect combination to end the meal. The restaurant is clean and the service was extremely attentive and efficient. I look forward to coming back and trying more from the menu!

Their food has bold Indian food flavors which we love! We LOVE their Chicken lollipop...Very flavorful! Lunch buffet was excellent as well! Only one thing Madras is missing is the lamb chops unfortunately..Hopefully they add lamb chops soon!

We'd been wanting to check this place out and we finally did on mother's day, so it was a little busier than normal - but not a problem. They offer an impressive line-up of Indian dishes that were constantly being replenished. So many dishes to try, and thankfully unlimited plates to fill. They post their buffet menu daily so you know what's being served and can truly try all their amazing dishes. A favorite of mine was surprisingly a vegetarian dish - paneer matar masala - but learning it's made with cottage cheese made sense - I love cheese! It tasted delicious with both rice and their buttered naan (which was another big favorite of ours,) Ken was a big fan of their nellai chicken kolambu. Service was very nice and quick.

I WILL be coming back to Madras. The food was seriously incredible. I couldn't believe the unique options to choose from on this menu and was delighted with every single item we ordered. The dosa was so much bigger than I expected and came with 4 unique and delicious sauces (dips?). The parantha was an incredible layered experience. I even enjoyed the chilly chicken my friend ordered (it had a little spice that resonated on the back end but for someone that doesn't like spicy food I throughly enjoyed it ). As for atmosphere, it was a very tasteful interior. The only downside was the parking lot construction-- we almost left thinking they were closed. THANKFULLY, we checked and were able to sit down because we would have missed out on a new favorite place. Looking forward to my next visit!

Mango Lassi. Excellent Indian food, helpful friendly staff and I finally got to try a Lassi. It was all delicious!

We had the Chicken 65 which is essentially spicy fried chicken bites with onion and sauce, and the chili chicken which is a bit more like General Tsao's but with a twist. Both were tangy and wonderful. The lamb vindaloo, heat 7 of 10, was just right for us - liking hot but not burning. The lamb and potatoes were tender, and there was the the right amount of sauce or gravy for the rice. The chicken tikka masala was perfect, again tender chicken and just the right heat at 7. But it was so filling we couldn't finish it all. It'll make a nice leftover for lunch tomorrow! The malai kofta had a slightly sweet and certainly spicy flavor, at an 8, and we finished it all - it was so good. Topped it off with garlic naan, and some Sprites. We'll be coming back, and also doing carry out!

Important Note: this is behind the Boost Mobile, and not so easy to see. A family-run three-person operation, Mithu is exactly the kind of restaurant operation that elevates a community. It's located in the Towne & Country shopping center, which has other proud national restaurants. I started off with the Gobi Manchurian, which really shows off cauliflower at its best. Savory, crispy, with a sweet slightly spicy tang. (You can customize the spiciness of most dishes on a 1-10 scale.) The Kottu Roti might best be described as Sri Lankan stuffing, light and flavorful. A complex dish with the flavor profile that just kept giving little sparkles of delight. The garlic naan, screamingly hot out of the tandoor, was a perfect vehicle for the other dishes. The mango lasi was fresh and not too sweet, highlighting the fruit. A+ would sip again. The staff are wonderful, attentive, and enthusiastic. This is a great place to bring friends and explore the menu. You'll thank me later.
