The food here is phenom. I had a great meal (with the bonus of Skymiles) and I liked that it was self-service making ordering quick and convenient. I decided on the BENGAN BHARTA (roasted eggplant, mashed and sautéed with onions, garlic and simmered in tomato sauce) and PLAIN NAAN. The Bengan Bharta was highlighted as the chef's favorite and I'm obsessed with eggplants so that was an easy choice for me. The Bengan Bharta had full-bodied flavor and a kick that crept up on me. Recently stumbled upon this place while looking for best Indian restaurants in North Beach area. It is a small restaurant where you order at the Counter and then pay at the Counter when it is time to leave. No servers to help us with water and dishes. We ordered the chicken curry and a chicken biryani. Curry was delicious and tasted great with the Garlic Naan we had. The biryani was kind of mediocre yet tasty for both of us to finish. I like the set up of this place. Basically, you get your own utensils and you order at the counter before you seat. There's limited seating since the place can get full. I went on a Friday night with my boyfriend at 9 pm and there was plenty of seats available. It did get busy about 40 minutes in but we were done with our food already. We ordered five items which were so good we finished it all. Chicken tiki masala, lamb vindaloo, garlic nan, and two mango lassi! The portions are a bit small but it's very delicious. Simple and Sweet A few blocks from fisherman's wharf and pier 39 lies this small restaurant called Curry Leaf and I'm so glad my friends and I came to try it! We came expecting yummy indian offerings and they delivered! I tried the Karahi chicken and it was the perfect blend of spices and the perfect amount of heat. I think one of the best things among the many things we ordered was the vegetarian biryani! for 10 dollars you get a plate of biryani that can easily feed someone for 2 meals. It is a bit spicier than the other biryanis that ive tried but definitely the best one ive had thus far. Pricing is exceptionally fair. I only remember the prices for the karahi chicken with rice and biryani and those were 12 dollars and 10 dollars respectively. In SF i think if you can get any food around that price with a ton of leftovers that is quite a steal. The waiters were super courteous and welcoming. Best part is the establishment is clean and smells of wonderful aromas from the different blend of spices. Also the tandoori oven being used creates lovely aromas for this place as well. Come check this place out if you want to get away from the touristy place and just get some exceptional Indian food! read more

Sorry, but I didn't think this place was "all that." I did order delivery and maybe the food doesn't travel well, but I wasn't that impressed. Mainly, the curries and daal seemed watery. Good curries are not watery. The naan we ordered was too doughy and wasn't too warm. The samosa wasn't anything unique. The chicken tikka masala was good but not great. It was missing a slight smokiness to it, and that punch that usually the dish has. It wasn't terrible, just nothing memorable. This review is exclusively for the masala naan. When the naan came out there was some familiar aroma which I traced back to the pizza dough of dominos in India. This is not why the naan was great but it was strange that it reminded of something from years ago from another continent, hope it's not a frozen naan. That being said, the naan was cooked perfect, right amount of crisp on the edges and in spite of all the jalapeños the spice wasn't overpowering. It's called masala naan but I didn't taste any masala. So to turn his dope naan epic I'd add some chopped red onions, feta cheese and some blend of masala perhaps chaat masala? I'm not a huge fan of Indian food because I don't like coriander or cumin, which are very common in Indian cuisine. Curry leaf is one of my favorite restaurants! Their tikka masala is the perfect balance of acidic, creamy, and savory. It's my comfort food when I'm hungover or want something that tastes homemade. I'm sure they use coriander and cumin, but it doesn't stand out, which is rare! They only use white meat chicken, so it feels healthy and tastes really fresh. You can tell the chefs know their flavors and know how to be delicious but balanced. I love to have my masala with plain naan (no cilantro lol) and the naan is always pillowy and fresh. Their lamb biryani is heavenly- I didn't know a rice dish could be so flavorful. My boyfriend enjoys the Sikh kebabs, which are priced at a really good deal considering they come with two different sauces and onions. Their online ordering system is easy and their food is always ready in 15 minutes. The prices are also reasonable, so I really value that living in the most expensive city. You can sit down first with a menu, but you still need to get up to order. No waiter service! We had a lamb vindaloo and a chicken tikka masala, which I typically order at Indian places. Its kind of my go-to. This..was ok. The sauces all tasted pretty good, but the meats were JUST a bit over cooked. JUST a bit. The naan bread was ok, but really crispy in the center. Like. Cracker crispy. I'm kind of used to the breads still being a bit flexible in the center, and the only bread that had that was the ground meat one. Which...didn't have a lot of flavor. My usual garlic was the best, followed by the potato...followed by the meat. Interestingly, that's also the prices from low to high. Hum. It's a good place to go, but for my money I'd probably still end up going to Kennedy's across the street. =/ read more

I discovered this place in my 2015 SF trip because I stayed near Fisherman's Wharf. I returned in 2017 and went here twice during the trip. It's a small curry place (I think Indian but I'm not sure) located close to the Wharf. 2 streets from Crookedest Street (Lombard). Around 10 minutes walk from Pier 43, just straight down Taylor. The place is mostly self-service (which is apparently a big put off to a particular reviewer Yelp is showing me while I write my review; the guy probably never had to do manual labor his whole life? I don't know I don't judge). You are given the menu, take your seat, decide what you want, go to the front and order at the counter. Water, plates, utensils, etc are at the back, grab them yourself. Simple. It saves time and place which are literally expensive in San Francisco. The naan, omg, they are fluffy, puffy, and fresh. Don't think I have had better bread "outside" before (Yes, I'm poking fun at the same reviewer). Garlic naan was a little mild on the garlic but I had this style of garlic naan before so I didn't mind it. I had their chicken biryani, lamb curry, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, seekh kebaab, and honestly I don't remember the others, it was like 2 years ago. The food was great. Specifically, from today's meal, the lamb curry was great, the lamb was not over or undercook, something that happens quite often with curry lamb. The chicken biryani was a surprising amount of chicken in it and the spice is flavorful, reminds me of home in Malaysia (I mean, most of us grew up on curry and other things like biryani etc). So, I ordered delivery on a Sunday afternoon as I was traveling and staying in a local hotel, run down with a bad cold. I thought some warm Indian food would really hit the spot, and spent some time researching the best options in the area. I was excited by the reviews for this place, but found it disappointing overall. Certainly not the worst Indian food I've had, but coming from upstate NY, I figured Indian food from a place in SF with consistently good reviews would easily beat the stuff I eat back home. Not so much. The best part was that the food was actually spicy without my having to request it, and it did taste fresh. But it didn't come with rice and this wasn't obvious when I was ordering online, and the garlic naan I ordered was stale and overly chewy and ultimately not worth eating. They also didn't bother to include cutlery or a straw for my mango lassi (which was actually quite tasty). --Ok, straws are bad, I agree, but a note when ordering online about these things not being included would have reduced my annoyance. The palak paneer was somewhat flavorful, but missing the ginger and coriander flavors I'm used to in a good saag or palak dish. The paneer makhani was rich but actually too spicy for my taste (which is saying something), especially without rice to buffer the heat. With some fresh naan and rice, I would have enjoyed the meal more, but still felt the flavors I was looking for were missing. Too bad. read more
