EXCELLENT food. I had Nash surprise me with the Chattinad Chicken Curry. I didn't know what to pick and asked him to pick his favorite, not the usual crowd's go-to. We ordered Madras Masala Dosa, Chana poori, veg kothu parota, chettinad chicken curry, garlic naan, butter chicken. Dosa and poori was fresh. Potato stuffing in the dosa was fresh, but bland taste. The butter chicken was tender and pretty standard taste. Chettinad chicken was a big disappointment. They are probably the closest Indian place to Fisherman's Wharf and the Pier-39 area, so there should be plenty of traffic from tourists and visitors. A great spot to dine near Fisherman's Wharf. I tried the chicken soup and goat biryani. The chicken soup was outstanding--just what I needed on a cold, rainy day. The biryani was flavorful with a generous amount of goat pieces, and the rice portion was enough for two people. The medhu vada was freshly made and perfectly crispy. The service was good. Good food but overpriced! We got the Idli, Mysore Masala Dosa, Filter Coffee, Parota and Potato Sabji - the standard South Indian vegetarian order. The idli was a bit dry, and the potato sabji was bland. However, they customized the mysore masala dosa to be less spicy per my liking. The parota was multi-layered with crisp outer layer - as it should be. Overall the food was good, however, compared to the quality, flavor and price at Udupi Palace, this was a bit pricey. As someone of Indian heritage, I found the ambience to be clean and homely. There was incense, banana leaves, water being served out of copper containers and lots of sunlight (we went for lunch). I visited Chennai Kings in a group of 4. Its conveniently located near fisherman's wharf. They have a restaurant area and (I'm assuming) an event area which is converted with restaurant seating as well. Since the restaurant was full, we were seated in their event space - which seems a bit make-shift. We ordered 2 Madras Masala dosas, onion uthappam and tomato uthappam with filter coffees. I'm not sure if they are understaffed- but it took them more than 20 minutes to serve us the ordered food. The dosas were average to say the best. Onion uthappam was slightly undercooked (probably needed a minute or so more), but the tomato uthappam was good. The chutneys were okay but sambar and filter coffees were super authentic. The staff was very nj - they made sure we were comfortable and received everything we ordered. Overall, this is a great place to visit if you are in the area and wanna grab south indian food. read more

Very impressed by the dosa and rasam here. I didn't have high hopes given it's in a tourist-filled area and had a middling rating but I was proven wrong. I liked it better than Udupi in the mission which many recommend but I personally didn't love. The servers here are students who are fun to chat with while the chef cooks up a delicious crepe. The aalo (potato) in the madras masala dosa was literally just boiled potatoes with minimal salt added which gave it no taste. The dosa itself was a good size but if the stuffing itself isn't tasty then all you can eat it is with the coconut chutney which admittedly was good. The sambar was mediocre as well. We ordered Gobi Manchurian as well which was better than the madras dosa. Although, it wasn't spicy and we had asked for spice. Spring dosa was also better than the masala dosa. The filter coffee was really good. We were able to put the sugar ourselves. that was better anyway as we can choose the level of sweetness according to taste. Me and my husband went to this place right around lunch time. The server was friendly but the service was super slow. We ordered for a baby corn chilli, ghee roast dosa, buttermilk and a mushroom dosa which never arrived. I waited for almost an hour for the mushroom dosa only to later find out the server had not heard us and he didn't even tell the kitchen. Mind you the hotel had no one else and there was just music playing in the background from a tv. I went to the San Francisco outlet and just took a biryani to go. One thing I noticed is that the place was very spacious. It even had a hall in the back with musical instruments, which leads me to believe it can be rented out for performances and so on. The biryani was spicy and had lots of flavor(they do ask you a spice level beforehand). So seems like it would be a good dine in experience and visit to visit it sometime soon. read more

This is our third time here, I truly was excited to write a positive review after our first trip but was faced with complete discrimination. My table of four couldn't help but notice people arriving much later than us and receiving there food right away. 2nd try was much worse, we were first to arrive at the restaurant. We placed our order within first 10 minutes of our arrival, it did take sometime to get the waiters attention, long shaggy hair guy very involved in his phone. Like many others I do not know why the ratings are so low. The staff was incredibly kind, in fact, they let us in 15 minutes before opening. The food was incredibly delicious. I hade the chicken biriyani and my friend had the goat curry. We went family style and at the end we were incredibly stuffed. The serving sizes are deceivingly big and the presentation was nice. Unfortunately I didn't take a pic of the food. If you're craving Indian food and you come across this place you have to go it. I'm going back before my San Francisco trip is over for sure. read more

Stopped here for dinner on a weekday when boyfriend was craving some south Indian comfort food. Noticed right off the bat that the food didn't match up to south bay restaurants. The idli was doughy and you could tell that it hadn't risen enough. It came with sambhar and two chutneys - the coconut chutney and sambhar were pretty good, the tomato chutney was average. Veg kottu parotha had an overwhelming level of spice in it; there was nothing spectacular about it. Dosa was decent. South bay seems to be a better place to indulge in Indian food so don't think I will be returning. read more

We were wandering around Fisherman's Wharf and saw this restaurant. I do a lot of East Indian cooking and wanted to try it. It's not much to look at from the outside, but we took a chance. The hostess was pleasant and the food was abundant and delicious. You can tell when food is prepared with freshly toasted spices because it takes it to a new level of good. The Butter Chicken and Vegetable Pakora were both so good I ate slowly so I could savor every bite. I would've given them 5 stars, but the waiter did not speak English and after the initial greeting from the hostess, the staff were too involved with their cell phones to notice that we were not served drinks and out food took a while to come out.
