I would give this clinic zero stars if it was possible. To begin with, I inherited a family of small mammals (8) that were going to be set loose to fend for themselves. These sweet animals are only treated by vets who treat "exotic animals," (i.e., not a cat or dog) and there aren't many of these vets. I needed to make an appointment for one of them to be seen. The immediate situation was not considered an emergency, but could turn fatal. Making an appointment for my pet was not an easy task. I was finally able to get an appointment yesterday, for today (approx 24 hours ago). As life goes, life happened. I was not going to be able to make the scheduled appointment, I found out 1.5 hrs before. I called to apologize and wanted to reschedule, my pet still REQUIRED care. I was informed that because I am a new client and need to "cancel" my appointment (I asked immediately to reschedule), that Dr. Binder has recently stopped allowing this. There is the 24 hour cancellation policy(yesterday, when they called me to make the appointment), also my appointment slot could not be "filled in time". Time for what? To recoup that lost 'new patient' fee? I asked if they would please double check with the doctor. I called back (1 hr later) to find out the answer. As the receptionist had explained earlier, the doctor said "no." I stated "this is important." The response given was "THERE ARE OTHER DOCTORS!" (rudely) It was difficult enough trying to find a vet that could treat exotic animals, let alone trying to schedule an appointment! It is obvious that they are NOT concerned with the welfare of every pet. "Compassionate care for your fur family" Straight from their webpage OBVIOUSLY that quote is questionable, if not just FALSE. Do not depend on them to do the right thing for your pet! read more

This place has really gone downhill and I'm no longer a customer. I've (almost) never been treated so rudely by a business where I was the customer. The staff has turned over several times since I started going there in ~2017 (never a good sign), and the current staff seems focused on reprimanding their customers. They seem nice, until you share a concern or complaint, then they turn hostile. And, to be honest, the lead vet is a bit scatterbrained, her communication all over the map, and I have difficulty getting clear on exactly what's going on with my cats and what the plan going forward will be. When people use 1000 words, I find it difficult to get the main point. The facility is old (an old house), with small rooms and no visible modern equipment. If you have a mobility disability, even a sprained ankle, don't even think of going here. To go into the front door, you must navigate about a dozen stairs going uphill. I think there's a ramp in the back but I've never seen anyone use it, and you'd have to first find a parking space in the back (only two) and then make special arrangements to enter thru the cramped back room. If I were disabled, I would not want to be singled out in this way. And now I can finally tell Sammy's story. My sweet 3-legged boy was a client here in his later years and eventually diagnosed with lymphoma. As his symptoms progressed, I brought him to this vet for a sonogram (performed by a visiting vet, as they don't have the equipment). When I brought him home, his (one) back leg was injured, perhaps sprained, and he was dragging it behind him, using his front paws to propel him forward (THIS IMAGE WILL HAUNT ME FOREVER). The worst part was the diagnosis - the vet told me he had to be euthanized THE NEXT DAY. Taking their advice, I brought him back the next day for this to be done, but wondered how it had gotten this far with nobody realizing it. When I called Dr. B. a few days later, I tried to tell her about his back leg. I suspected that someone had loaded him back into his top-loading cat carrier without taking care to let him put the back leg down solidly (as he always did, for stability) before they dropped him in. I'm sure this was unintentional, but I wanted to let them know for future 3-legged kitties that this is important. On the phone with Dr. B, she IMMEDIATELY BECAME HOSTILE and shut down my concern within 3 seconds, saying in an angry tone "Well, that wasn't our fault!" I was so devastated, I just stopped and did not share this suggestion (until now). But I have never forgiven her for failing to LISTEN. And that's the main problem with this practice. They don't listen. read more

On multiple occasions I had to call several times over 2+ weeks before getting a call back with care advice from the doctor/prescriptions re-filled/etc. Reception staff was often rude. Admin Bonnie said owner would not to talk to me; vet didn't call either. Compassion? No. Ad admin added notes to her med records later to dispute my facts. Oh. Hospital manager said don't return. I love my dog. I rescued her 6 weeks ago, and she started going here the day after I got her. While she was quite terrified, Dr. Kay was kind and gentle with her (we went on a Saturday). We've also seen Dr. Binder a couple of times, and I love her! My dog was getting a lyme disease booster, and Dr. Binder was super quick with it. She made my dog feel comfortable and we shared stories about each other's dogs. My dog liked her even after the vaccine. My dog recently had a scare where she had rat poison in her mouth. I had to take her to Angell in the wee hours of the morning, and Dr. Binder followed up with us the next day. She offered advice and empathy. And yes, vet care is not cheap. You shouldn't expect it to be. This is money well spent. read more

So, this is just a follow-up to reiterate how much I love Cushing Sq Vet Clinic. Earlier this year our sweet chocolate lab had to be put down after dealing with a number of ailments, and we was met with nothing but care and support throughout the entire process. Dr. Binder came to our house to help us say goodbye, and we paid over the phone so that we didn't have to go into the clinic except to pick up her ashes. Since then we have taken another pup into our family and we know he is in great hands with everyone at Cushing Sq Vet. I have been a client of Cushing Square Veterinary Clinic for 15 years on and off. They have always been fantastic. I am not one to write reviews, but I felt obligated after my experience today. My French Bulldog, Scully, became suddenly ill. She was vomiting, had diarrhea, was trembling and was otherwise miserable. Cushing Square saw her quickly despite their fully booked schedule. Dr. Dawn Binder is amazing. She was thorough and honest with her examination. She even took an afterhours follow-up call to receive an update on Scully's condition and provide more guidance. She went above and beyond. We're not out of the woods yet, but I now have complete confidence that this is quite possibly the best veterinary clinic in the area. After having taken my cats to this practice for years, I recently had a very unfortunate experience. I was contacted, 10 months after a visit, saying they had failed to bill me for services and that I needed to pay. The services in question had not been billed because they were not authorized by me. Trying to sort this out 10 months later was impossible, and the practice (although requiring all payment at the end of each visit, which is fair), would not commit to timely billing on their side going forward. It was three years ago, but it still stings. I had just moved back to Boston, and my 16 year old cocker spaniel was ready to say goodbye. My old vet had stopped practicing, and I had nowhere to go. It was the day after Thanksgiving, and they were up the street and open. Never in my life had I been treated so callously. Clearly, I was in a dire situation, and reception had all the sensitivity of a linebacker. Once I got to see a doctor, things improved, and I will concede that she could appreciate what was happening. However, it was all undone, when three hours after the deed, they called me to tell me they made a mistake on the invoice, and I still owed them money. Did I have a credit card handy so they could get their extra dough? When I assured them I would pay the balance when I picked up the ashes, they suggested that I might abandon them and not pay. Did I mention this was THREE HOURS after putting my animal down? When I went in a week later to retrieve his ashes, I gave them an earful, and obviously, have not returned. Perhaps their customer service has improved. Perhaps, because it was a holiday weekend, people were not 100%. But really, in the last moments of your pet's life, you would expect professionals to behave appropriately. read more

I grew up with a vet down cape, when I moved to Belmont I choose this place on recommendation. Customer service is way different up here, I am use to getting reminders and thank you cards. Here it is nothing like that just fork over the money and take your puppy home. Left the vet for another and its been perfect. My 19 year old cat had a stroke and needed immediate attention so I looked around and took him to the first place that would see me immediately. Cushing Square Veterinary Clinic on Trapelo Rd in Belmont made room in their busy schedule right away. The Dr took a great deal of time to both examine my cat and to explain her diagnosis to me. She then had me bring the cat in the next day -Sunday - to check on him and to give him more fluids. I was blown away that she would do this on her day off but she even stayed late when I was delayed in getting there! Because the cat was in no pain and there was a slight chance of recovery we then waited a week until my daughter returned from camp for her to say good bye before taking the next natural step. Dr. Binder called me at 6PM on Thursday of that week simply to check in to see if there had been any changes and to see if we had any questions. Wow. My heart swells just to remember the genuine concern that she conveyed in that call. When it was clear that we needed to peacefully put the poor cat to sleep she coached me through that choice and how to explain it to my children. When we went in to have it done the whole staff was incredibly supportive, thoughtful and helpful. I was not a patient of the Dr Binders going into this crisis and because of the age of my cat (and the stroke which had guaranteed his demise) there was no hope of me becoming a life-long and profitable customer (at least for this animal). However Dr Binder helped me, my poor cat and my whole family through a very difficult decision and final procedure with incredible professionalism, heart felt care and class. My family had had this cat with us for 19 years and he was very very special to all of us. I am so incredibly grateful that we found Dr Binder and the whole staff at Cushing Square Veterinary Clinic. Hi Yelpers - I don't often write reviews but I feel compelled to do so here because Cushing Square Vet is simply excellent. Dawn and crew take very good care of my feline friend. For me, communication is the most important piece of the puzzle (that applies to all healthcare whether for myself or my kitty). Dawn always takes the time to explain what's going on in a way that I can understand. She's diligent about checking in with me (amazing) to make sure that everything is ok or plan our next step. Follow-up like that makes me feel like my cat is in the right hands providing comfort and lowering my stress level at a time that I need it most. The truth is that our animals can't tell us what's going on when they're sick. They can't say that their tummy feels funny or that their skin is more itchy than normal. Having the expertise to read the signs and experience to know how to handle them is paramount. I highly recommend Cushing Square Vet... they're an office you can trust (and they're leagues above the competition in bedside manner for us humans!) read more

Great service, extremely friendly staff, and exceptionally accommodating! I called them when my little dog was really sick and dehydrated, and even though we had never gone there before, the receptionist squeezed us in right away. The dog was so dehydrated, he could have died if he hadn't been immediately treated, so I'm very grateful to her for getting us in right away. I've called them to ask questions, and they are really helpful -- even if I don't schedule an appointment (i.e. "My dog's stomach is upset, should I make an appointment?" response: "Try rice and boiled chicken, and call us tomorrow if it doesn't improve"). Whenever we walk our dogs by CSVC, they try to go up the little stairs to go inside... That's just dang good service. Woof. read more

I have only been coming to Cushing Square since Dr. Binder purchased the practice. In fact, I followed her here from her previous practice...such was my confidence in her. Believe me when I say that Dr. Binder is truly wonderful. She loves my girls...they know it and I know it. Two of my three cats have been very ill, and she has proven to be a thoughtful diagnostician, willing to try different treatment modalities and referring me to a specialist when indicated. When it was time to euthanize my sweet 14 year old kitten, Dr. Binder explained exactly what would happen, answered all my questions, and, after my little one had left this world, she hugged me as i cried and cried. Needless to say, I will never take my girls to a different vet. As another reviewer remarked, Cushing Square is not cheap. Then again, I have never found veterinary care to be a bargain. More than that, I don't want cheap vet care. Our pets can't talk and so can't communicate to us how kind the caregiver, effective the treatment, clean the facilities. We have to go with our gut...and my gut and my experience with Cushing Square tells me they're worth anything they charge because I trust them...and you cannot put a price tag on that. read more

My animals have been patients of Dawn Binder since her days in Stoneham Ma. I admit I strayed when I moved up to NH cause I had young kids and wanted to be close to home.... I payed for this decision when my dog was misdiagnosed by a vet in NH.. I tracked down Dr Binder for a second opinion, and she quickly and accurately confirmed my fear. We lost our girl 5 mo later but would have lost her a lot sooner if it wasn't for DR Binders quick response. As it stands now, I travel from NH to see Dr. Binder and wouldn't go any where else for my dogs. Dr Binder is worth Every minute of the hour drive it takes me to get there. She is not only knowledgeable, but treats every one of her patients as if they were her own fur babies. read more

Had a very sad emergency with my hamster yesterday. Finding that the small animal vet at my local vet was not in I ended up at Cushing Square at the suggestion of the receptionist. I saw Dr. Sullivan who talked me fully through what was going on with my hamster and talked with me about all the different treatment options available and the likelihood of any of them being successful. He was very knowledgeable as well as being very gentle and talking to my hamster the whole time he was examining her to put her at ease. He also answered all my questions, which were many, with a great deal of patience as I was crying through most of them. In the end, the very hard decision was made to put her to sleep as her chance of survival was unlikely, but I think this decision would have been much harder had I not been with a vet who took the time to help me fully understand the situation. Dr. Sullivan then allowed me to sit with her and say good-bye for as long as I needed. Everyone there was extremely compassionate, friendly, and supportive of me, both on the phone when I called to make the appointment and also while in the clinic, this random woman they had never met before weeping uncontrollably out in the exam room. I also very much appreciate that they were able to find space for me in their schedule. I will most definitely be going there again should we end up with another small pet. Hopefully under happier circumstances. I really appreciated their honesty and support while making a very difficult decision and in the end I do not think I could have ended up at a better vet clinic. They have fully gained my trust. I've had mixed results here with my two cats. Everyone is friendly but the care isn't as good as other vets I've been to. During the last visit I didn't feel that the vet understood my concerns and they didn't get good full evaluations. They also recommended dental work more than twice as expensive as anywhere else I've gone. Last year they didn't recommend a cleaning and yet this year a different vet is talking extractions - that's either negligence on the part of one or looking for money on the part of the other. I'm going to have to go somewhere else in order to understand what I really have to do. read more

I have a very fear aggressive big dog. At any other hospital i took him to, the staff would take him away from me and i'd just hear him freaking out the whole time. The few times i'Ve been to Cushing Square Vet the doctors, nurses, and front desk were always so nice and comforting to my dog and I. They even kept him in the room withe me at all times during the exam. They treat him as if he was their own pet!!! You can tell how caring the whole staff is :) I will definitely be bringing my other pets here too ( Dr. Binder also sees bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small pets). I 100% would recommend this animal hospital to anyone. read more

They are all about making money and don't seem to have much of a clue. They ask the same bs questions and just weigh my dog each time. really??? I have a scale at home thanks :) I took my dog elsewhere for a dental cleaning because their estimate was outrageous. Not only that but never once had they suggested a dental cleaning until my dog ended up getting gum disease.They were even tacking on 4.50 for waste dispoal in their long list of things! ??? I don't usually take the time to write reviews (good or bad), but I just spoke with Dr. Binder on the phone for the first time and I was thoroughly impressed. She called me back on a Sunday when I had left a message only hours before. Although the clinic was closed, she had the consideration to call immediately and discuss my concerns (our indoor cat had a run-in with a bat and we don't know if his vaccines are up to date). Dr. Binder was at once informative, detailed, and compassionate about our situation as two scared cat parents. She helped me develop a plan for dealing with the situation, and by calling on a Sunday she saved us the $180 we were about to spend on an emergency vet visit. I got the impression that she is truly committed to her patients (even though we weren't yet clients when she called), and that she truly "gets" what it is like to be worried about our cat. With such a positive impression, I look forward to visiting the clinic for check-ups. read more

These guys rock! I have been using this clinic for 10 years and am very happy with the whole practice. Recently, we were on vacation and our sons were taking care of the dog. Our oldest son called us to say he was worried about the old girl - She was very dehydrated, panting, and not eating. We were a little concerned because she is usually a very energetic 12 year old. Since she had some digestive issues earlier in the summer and because of her age, the doctor wanted to see her immediately. My sons don't drive and the dog could clearly not do the 1 mile walk to the vet - the vet said she would wait for my dog and we somehow managed to get friends to drive her over there. The doctor and staff were on the phone with me several times as I was driving back from Maine. By the time I got to Belmont, the dog was stable, feeling better, and able to go home. The experience from beginning to end was comforting and wonderful. read more

I have used a few different vets in the Belmont/Cambridge area and now wish I had started with Cushing Sq vet. I recently had to have some fairly significant surgery done on my cat, who treated pony tail holders like candy. The staff was kind and thoughtful. The follow up was great and I never felt like I was being offered anything, just to increase their billings. Recommend them highly! You can't imagine a better animal clinic than this! I had a very old and sick cat my husband and I brought there for everything! They all treated her like she was their baby! I also helped out in the office for a brief time and I can honestley tell you behind the scenes there are sinere, smart and loving people who work there. I also worked at another animal hospital and still used to refer poeple there!! Bad work ethic, I know but I had more faith for Cushing Square then the clinic I was working for!! Every time my dog needs a visit, they have been so caring and amazing. They get him in quickly, and call back with results in often less than 24 hours. I have two dogs and both actually like going to this office. I have NEVER had a bad experience here and the staff is super friendly. A couple of years ago when i was getting my dog fixed they (in my opinion) went above and beyond in terms of the affection and attention they gave my dog. I remember arriving that night to pick him up and they had him wrapped up in a towel like a baby and the whole office was wooing him. It really meant a lot to know that he wasn't just thrown in a cage to heal. I've since moved all the way to Stoneham, and I still go to this office because I've found the place i want to treat my pups for the long term! read more
