Honestly, I want to love this place! It reminds me of an old fashioned ice cream parlor except it is actually a "shack where you order at a first window and the young teenage girls working there make your order then call your name and pass it out the other window. They have a flavor of the day that is often excellent and almost always sells out before they close for the night. Their regular flavors are, well, regular. Their hours are limited. Their prices are very fair unless you are comparing them to ice cream you can buy at the grocery store.... Good, not great. Tasty, but get there early enough to get the special Flavor of the Day (listed on their website in real time and on an advance calendar), because it really is better! I got the brownie sundae with their custard flavor of the day: half baked. I loved the half baked custard. The custard was similar to ice cream but a little creamier and melted in my mouth. I loved the chunks of cookie dough in the custard. Their caramel also tasted good on the sundae. This is the first brownie sundae that I've gotten where I had brownie leftover rather than ice cream leftover. I think they got the ratio wrong. It looked like 1 scoop of custard to 2 pieces of brownie. I would have preferred 2 scoops of custard to 1 piece of brownie. Also their brownie was a little dry. It tasted dense like the grocery store brownie bites. I prefer my brownies moist and either soft or gooey with a crispy crust. Also their peanuts tasted a little stale. There is not much parking in front of the ice cream store and all the seating is outdoors with no umbrella if it rains. There was a line but they had the cashier and another staff come out with a POS to take our order. Very efficient and line moves quickly. Kudos. So this is a cute walk-up custard spot. I got a single scoop which turned out to be a LOT of ice cream. The selection is limited; they only had a handful of traditional flavors. I got the s'mores and the cookies and cream in my single scoop and although the c&c was just ok, the s'mores was YUM! At the custard shack, you can have your custard and eat it too. My friend said I HAD to try custard at "a place in Belle Haven" after happy hour 10 minutes away. We got there around 7:15/7:30pm on a Friday night and there was a line of 5 people at the order line and a crowd near the pick up window. We had to wait a while to order and to get our orders but there was only one person working, and I felt so bad for her. She kept a smile on her face and was so pleasant, polite, and apologetic. Her demeanor made it so I didn't mind the wait too terribly--I felt too bad to be angry. We got the chocolate oreo and cookies and cream, and they were both amazing! I liked the cookies and cream a little better. From what I hear, they always have vanilla and chocolate and then they have a flavor of the week. They also have milkshakes, sundaes, sherbet. This ice cream is damn good. It's sort of whipped and light and yet creamy and delicious. We stopped here after a meh brunch and it really hit the spot. I had a scoop of vanilla with hot fudge, whipped cream and reese's peanut butter cups and yes yes yes it was exactly what I wanted. This is a small custard shop in Alexandria. They have a very small parking lot so it's hard to find a space. I ended up parking on the street. You order at one window and pick up at the other, both of the girls who helped me were really nice and I didn't wait long at all. I Love good custard but this was not it. It didn't taste very creamy, I would say it was just average. It wasn't nasty, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. I ordered a chocolate and vanilla mixed sugar cone. OMGsh! I always opt for the sorbet as I'm not a fan of custard. On my first trip, I combined the strawberry and lemon sorbet and was it delicious! Located in Alexandria's charming Belle Haven neighborhood along the Potomac River, Custard Shack is just off the GW Memorial Parkway. After visiting with my five-year-old daughter, here's why you should go: 1) Frozen custard: Using many ingredients from Wisconsin, it's creamy and with the right texture. They post their flavor of the day on their Instagram page and maintain a few regulars. When we went, they had vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream and fudge brownie as the flavor of the day. They also have sorbet for dairy-free options. They also have a few gluten-free options. The kids size is more than enough and you have the option of a cup, waffle cone, sugar cone or cake cone. My daughter got vanilla with rainbow sprinkles and gummy bears. (She loved the topping options depicted through the window.) My kid scoop of fudge brownie was flavorful and divine. The fudge and brownie bits were throughout the custard. 2) Space: True to its name, it's out of a little shack that was once a neighborhood grocery store. It's takeout only, but they have a single picnic table with a large red umbrella cover by a unique mural of custard and a burger on D.C. landmarks. Next door is a pizzeria from the same owners. There's a medium-sized parking lot in front of both businesses. 3) Story: They opened in 2015 and are family-owned. Decided to give Custard Shack a try after seeing all the favorable reviews and we were not disappointed. Parking gets a little jammed up on the weekends but we got lucky as somebody just pulled out. All I have to say is....LOOK AT THE PICTURE OF MY MILKSHAKE!! My goodness it looks so delicious and the taste was EV-ERY-THANG!!! This is a medium caramel banana milkshake. As you can see, there is caramel drizzle/sauce around the inside of the cup, but it is not drenched like a Starbucks caramel frappe would be and that is what I really like about this drink. I do not know if they blended any caramel in with the banana, but whether they did or didn't, the caramel was not overbearing at all. I really enjoyed that because I like the taste of banana smoothies and milkshakes alone so the caramel was a complimentary touch. When I walked up to the window, I had to ask if the people in front of me had already been waited on as there was no distinct order line. This, when you do go, ask if people are in line because they will stand everywhere. There is a second window to the left that your order will be called from. They do have benches outside and it's by a good walking and residential area if you wanted to go for a stroll. My order was only $5.57 which is great for this sized milkshake. If you've seen my reviews, you'd know I like paying in cash. I did pay with card but I do not know if they take cash. The card machine is right in front of you when you walk up as if you have no choice except to pay with card. Although I would typically take a star off for not being flexible with payment, I cannot find myself to do so as the milkshake was the best I've ever had and was very much reasonably priced; especially, for the amount you get. I do not know if there is any other place that could match Custard Shack's milkshakes, service, price, and etc. Overall experience: HECK YEAH! Unfortunately, our first trip of the summer left us super disappointed! We sampled some of their sorbets, and they tasted like old dish rags. We thought, maybe we should just stick to the ice cream - the hubs got his usual Cookies & Cream, and I had the flavor of the day, the Mocha Almond. When we finally got our orders from the pick-up window, we were shocked - there was barely anything in the cup, and the ice cream was already half melting. Were their freezers even working? And, what's with the stinginess in the scoops? We were used to the staff filling the cup, but what we received was not even a full scoop... The experience was annoying. No dice! read more

I love the cookies and cream here, along with the standard vanilla custard (usually mixed with a fruity sorbet). The combination between sweet and creamy always hits the spot. When it is super busy, be ready to wait a bit for your ice cream. Besides the wait times.
