It's hard to find a barber that fits your style and needs. Having lived in the south and getting fresh fades , you get picky about your cuts. Xavier does an excellent job to make you feel welcomed. He's always making jokes, speaking wisdom to all of us. While you're waiting you can get a beverage or play game of chess with others. This is rare vibe for Santa Monica and I highly recommend.

Got a haircut from here last week. Xaviers tools were very dirty and these are the results of my haircut. Terrible razor bumps that I have to deal with for several weeks now. I'm infuriated by this. People, inspect your barbers supplies before you decide to get a haircut. Not only that, but his shaving techniques were very aggressive toward the back of my head. My fade was pretty bad too. Other than that Xavier is a nice guy.

I found Cuttin' Up last year when I was searching for black-owned businesses to support and am so grateful! I got a botched hair cut and sad "taper" which was basically a straight line above my ears. The tapper fade on the back of my neck is uneven and their are a lot of even patches all around my head. To be honest I've had much better fades when I was in Afghanistan with crappy equipment in the middle of nowhere. I probably wouldn't come back here ever again. But I feel bad because I walked into the shop with $20's nobody had change for a $20, so I didn't tip and kind of felt bad. But she definitely didn't deserve a tip at all.

Service was fast and very friendly, and the value is solid compared to other barbershops in west LA ($35 for a men's haircut as of March 2025). They take cash or card for payment. Unfortunately, my haircut experience wasn't as great: after getting a majority of the cut done, I asked to have the sides trimmed slightly. The person helping me put on a guard (which I trusted to cut just shorter than the length of what was already there) that cut significantly more hair off than I wanted, and it was such a jarring difference that I had to commit to having the rest of the sides and back of my hair cut that short (else the back of my head would look weird). I wasn't thrilled. read more

First, if you're going to say you open at 10AM, here's a pro tip: 15 MINUTES EARLY IS ON TIM, ON TIME IS LATE. Why was I waiting from 10AM to 10:25 and NOBODY showed up? Second, TURN YOUR PHONE ON! If your cellphone is the number to the barbershop, then why is it off when it should be on DURING BUSINESS HOURS? I wanted to keep coming here but there is way too much unprofessional behavior that I cannot stand anymore. The ONLY Black barbershop in Santa Monica runs on street pharmaceutical time...be there at 10AM actually means "I'll get there when I get there. Never returning again no matter how bad I need a haircut. read more

I've had one of the best haircuts of my life here, skillfully shaping my curls and trimming my beard wonderfully. Sadly, I've also had the worst of my life here. Literally the first thing the gal did was mow off the beard feature I said I wanted to keep. I should have stood up and left right then but I thought I must have felt it wrong and no damn way that's what just happened....but no, it was. Overall, instead of cutting "just a little" she *left* just a little. Can't glue it back on so I guess this is my look for a while. I won't be back. Don't need every cut to be amazing, but I do need to actually have the things I say be respected every time. read more

Absolutely avoid Amelia, worst haircut I've received in years. Owner is a nice guy and tried to make it better but the lack on communication/accountability and entitlement by staff was insane. Go to Lincoln Barbers you'll get a much better haircut and service. read more

This man is a well-known black-owned business in Santa Monica that has been booming since I was in high school. His cuts are clean sharp and on point. Grade A business. 100 percent clean with tools and surroundings, not only that he has treats for dogs and games for kids. Love this shop, it's a gem tucked away on the corner of 18th Street & Broadway in Santa Monica. My son was very delighted with his haircut. He got a lot of compliments from friends at school and the birthday party we went to. The shop owner & the shop staff are very very professional, sweet and courteous, it has a very community orientated and neighborhood welcoming atmosphere. Looking for a decent haircut this is the place to go. Xavier does exceptional work, took my brother the next day for a correction cut from a previous barber, Xavier hooked it up better than my brothers original barber did Check them out, you won't be disappointed. read more

Nice dude but I asked him to cut my hair a little on the top... he cut off everything on the top. Can't slick back my hair like I asked. My hair on the top and sides are almost the same length which was something I didn't want. Never going again read more

Ken IS THE MAN! I came here to get my hair fixed! I came from a barbershop that butchered my head, barber got offended on a simple suggestion I made. Thankfully Ken was available and fixed my hair and got me the right fade. He pays attention to all the details and even pointed how bad the hair that was left for him to fix. lol. I've lived in Santa Monica for close to ten years and by default, I've passed by Xavier's barbershop for that amount of time despite having never been inside. After an ill-timed and eventually disasterous self-grooming session on a Friday night, I wanted to walk in first thing Saturday morning and he was open at 8am. As soon as I walked in, I felt good and I felt even better walking out. Xavier did a great job. I will certainly be back. Support your local barbershop, people! read more

I had quite the unsatisfactory experience at Cuttin' Up, yesterday. Everyone's experience will be different but this is mine. I met with Tamara AKA sunshine for a trim and deep condition. She quoted me $80 over text and when I arrived I made sure that she understood what style I wanted to leave with. So I was confused when she waited until I was washed and conditioned to inform me that due to the style that I had mentioned, the total cost would actually be $100. Fine no problem just don't do that style and do whatever $80 will get me, so I can leave. I should say I never like going to hairdressers because you never know what you're going to get until you're done and honestly I probably won't be going to another one again for a very long time after this experience. They are worst than the dentist for me. The trim does not seem very sufficient There are straggly pieces still throughout my hair. The final style that she did was some type of twists with heeping amounts of gel. And as I do not wear gel in my hair, I did not anticipate the fact that I would have what looks like a head full of dandruff the very next day. So now I can't wear my hair down without washing out all of the dried crusted pieces of gel. So there is that. I hate to critique a small business like this, but people should be aware. I would skip the styling and just get the cut. read more

One of the good old school combined barbershop & salon om the westside. Always a laid back easy going shop. Very quick in and consistent every time I go in. $20 for a hair cut free street parking cant really ask for anything more. They also sell hair suplies always have the game on tv. A barber here cut my hair prior to a music video shoot. I asked for a shadow fade and for my beard to be trimmed down and lined up. He pushed my hairline back and gave me an uneven fade. I didn't even have enough time to find another barber to correct the cut. I came back the day after the shoot to have it corrected, but by then the music video was already shot. What made it worse was that we were both African-American, he owned the shop and he didn't give me a proper cut. It was a $35 haircut. I've had better for $10. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

This spot is exactly what I had been looking for! I work for a finance company on Wilshire, and I was driving all the way back to the hood just to get a hair cut, because I didn't think there were any Black (Urban) shops in the SM area. This place is less that 5 min from the office and I was elated to find that the folks were super nice (Shanna is my girl) and the environment is very inviting. Giving it only 4 stars because I had to wait until the shop opened, it stated 8am but didn't open until 9am or so. A guy was in the shop cleaning and said it would open soon but after waiting for an hour I left to do something but went back and they were open but customers where there waiting. The guy remembered me and as soon as Shanna came in they told me to sit in her chair. The best hair cut I have had since being in California about 3 months. It was worth the wait, great barber shop, thank you Cutting Up!! read more

I have a fairly simple understanding of hairstyles and proper hair maintenance. The barber Javin asked me questions about my usual hairstyle and went through suggestions regarding trimming technique. Ultimately, I went with low fade with and a touch up on the top. He mentioned my two hair whorls and overall head shape provided some considerations on what he thought would look natural, which I appreciated. In the end, the fade was perfect. Afterwards I went in for quick shampoo and conditioner which targeted my dandruff. While the location is somewhat out of the way for me, I can definitely rely on their dedication and handiwork.

My feet have been through it the last couple of years (sports) and I wanted to get serious about caring for them properly, not just getting them painted. Of course, I turned to Yelp for the scoop and zeroed in on Ms. Glen's Therapeutic Manicures & Pedicures. I finally got a chance to go see Ms. Glen and it was everything I wanted and more. It was relaxing (I fell asleep)! It was restorative! My feet felt and looked healthy and cared for. I didn't get polished which is great because I have been wanting to go natural for a while to let my nails breathe and focus on what's really happening with my toe nail health. So may things I loved (in no particular order): - Very communicative from the appointment (via phone) to the confirmation and directions (via text) - Ms. Glen greeted me at the door - The studio smells divine (really sets the tranquil mood) - The studio was intimate (just me - yay) - The space was very clean (I am a stickler for clean) - There was a complimentary water waiting on me - Ms. Glen has developed her own techniques and products which speaks to her dedication and specialization (I love people who are passionate about what they do!) - Every step of the treatment was appreciated! (very detailed, very attentive, think - pampering your feet from the in-depth massage to the parrafin to the soaks to the grooming and much much more) - I got socks! This was such a special and much needed last step that I never knew I needed. It made my feet more comfortable and protected after such a beautiful treatment. She even asked me my size. How's that for customer service! - Now this one may seem trivial but I never had to hold my feet up during the treatment unless I was transitioning from the bowl to a towel. I do not like having to do that while someone attends to the bottom of my feel or heels. Ms. Glen has it worked out where I can truly relax the whole time. I also left with one of Ms. Glen's therapeutic hand and foot oils in Lemon. She makes the oils herself! It smells so good and leaves a refreshing but not overpowering scent. It feels good oiling my feet every night. Like another reviewer said, this is not your run of the mill pedicure shop. This is a therapeutic service that is worth every penny. My goal is to make this a regular treatment. If my feet are healthy, I am healthier! Thanks Ms. Glen for such a wonderful experience! I'll be back. And thanks again for the massage therapist recommendation. Rest and recovery, here I come!

If your feet are in need of TLC, renewal and restoration, Ms. Glen has a carefully curated service that will leave your feet feeling brand new. I had recently purchased a soap that helps with skin discoloration. It hasn't been making any improvement in the uneven skin tone and dark marks on my feet. Turns out I just needed an appointment with Ms. Glen. The exfoliation she provided literally rubbed away 15 years from my feet. My dry scratchy heels were left supple and smooth and the calloused areas were left soft. Had I known what I was in store for I would have taken before and after pictures. She even provided socks for me to leave in, to seal in the moisture. My favorite part hands down was the massage. She kneaded into these tired soles, and I needed that! I paid a little more than the price listed (which she does quote as a base price) but she also spent almost 2x the amount of time listed. My Fiancé noticed the difference in appearance and feel immediately. I intentionally waited until 24 hours+ had passed to write this review, wanting to see if my feet would feel just as nice. THEY DO!! Ms. Glen definitely puts pride in her work and I love how she checked in throughout the process to ensure I was satisfied along the way. I recommend her service to anyone looking to give their feet a more youthful feel and look. And if your feet have severe issues that might keep you from visiting open public salons, her private suite will help you feel comfortable and secure. Right before I left, Ms. Glen threw in a bottle of her therapeutic hand & foot oil once she saw how dry my hands were. I had discussed my upcoming nuptials with her and she wanted to make sure my hands moisturized properly for my big day, even providing a demonstration on proper application. Ms. Glen is a gem!

I'm so glad I ended up at this salon and will be back every month! While chatting with Celina at the start of the appointment, I mentioned to her that my natural nails had become weak after repeatedly getting temporary nail extensions at another salon. Celina suggested that we could try a luminary hard gel overlay on my natural nails for long-lasting strength (~1 month) and nail growth without the need for gel-x/tips. No other nail technician had ever mentioned this as an option, and I am so happy with how it turned out! As someone who always had extensions, I've never seen my natural nails look so good in my life! Not only do they look great, but they also feel so strong, and I don't have to worry about them breaking. Celina is super detail-oriented and it's obvious that she cares a lot about her work and clients. On top of everything else, the polish options at this salon are beautiful. I have found that in many other salons, color options are overwhelming and laid out in a chaotic and overstimulating way. At Two Gemini Girls, polishes are grouped and organized not just by color, but also by color scheme/tone, which is such a better experience when choosing the perfect shade. 10/10!

I've been going to this Barbershop since I was a kid and I hace always had a good experience. Xavier is very uplifting and he has a great personality. As for my hair cut it was faded and tapered just how I like. You don't have to drive to L.A to get a nice cut you can get it right here in Santa Monica.....!!! read more
