The Homie's Indian history professor introduced his UW class to a particular sweet confection called, soan papdi. This was his second visit and my first on 3/14/24. It was nice to be able to wander the aisles and peer at the wide variety of items available at this retail shop...canned and packaged items, spice bins, refrigerated and frozen items, fresh produce, etc. The Homie ended up selecting another box of soan papdi, a malt beverage, and some chai tea for purchase. The shop was clean, well stocked, and surveillance cameras strategically positioned. One person was in/out of the shop doing restocks, while the other person sat stoically at the front register by the entrance. There were other shoppers while we were there, so it's good to see that the others find it useful for their needs. I wished there were helpful signage for the various items featured in the front pastry case though. I only recognized gulab jamun. I didn't feel particularly assertive to inquire further. Overall Yelp score was 3.5, rounded to a 4.

We left happily with more than I expected (3 different Gainer's seasonings and 3 different hot sauces) and I am so excited to try them! I loved that he has a sample bottle of each of his own spices to smell. If you love to cook or know anyone who loves to cook, this shop is sure to impress! Special side note - you can tell this shop owner really cares. I am not a family member or friend of his. A very mini grocery store. I try to spread my business throughout Chinatown, so I go from the mini places, buy what I can, before moving up in size to buy more. New Gan Shan is one of the mini stores I go to. I usually buy dry noodles, snacks, sauces, and some of the crack seed snacks that are sold by weight in the glass jars. For the most recent trip, I bought a package of non-fried wonton noodle soup with soup mix (Hong Kong style), a package of Hong Kong style shrimp dry noodles (I have been eating these my whole life), and some Taiwan-made soft flour cake called sachima. These are common in multiple Chinese regions - Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. Lastly, I bought some preserved olives that are crack seed snacks. So yummy but not that good for me. Hehehe. The proprietor and the cashier both speak English and are very kind people. Of course, they try to upsell everything. Look at this, look at that, you should try that, etc. I don't mind. The store is brightly lit and looks very clean. It's one of the reasons why I continue to return.

I stopped in yesterday (1/22/26) for three reasons: I had a Too Good To Go confectionary pickup, wanted to see their Kasama Chocolate selection, and look around after my 15-16 year hiatus. Parking along Elliott in the Interbay area is dicey due to bus lanes, parking restrictions and traffic flow. Luckily, there are a few parking slots on the south side of their building, adjacent to Holy Mountain Brewing. Walked in and was blown away at the retail layout, so much to see! The counter person (owner?) was busy with another customer. Their convo was very warm and interactive. So I slowly meandered through the store and really liked what I saw. I should have come here for useful holiday gifts. I was later checked upon inquiring whether I needed any help locating any particular item(s). Chocolates, spices, olive oils, sauces, condiments, pasta, and other specialty items that a culinarian, gourmand, or treasure seeker would fully enjoy. The retail displays are so enticing and provides a lot of inspiration. Plus ChefShop is a lot closer to me than heading to PFI on S Dearborn. I ended up having to restrain myself and selected ras el hanout and berbere spice jars and two bars of Kasama Chocolate for purchase. The latter I learned about from Instagram, much closer than having to trek to Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver, BC. Plus my TGTG confectionary bag, everything found made for a successful retail visit. Terrific retail layout. Welcoming and informative customer service. With the loss of Chocolopolis further down Elliott, ChefShop is another great resource for quality chocolate varieties. It's beautifully decorated and doubles as a great PR display for the company. Most of the great salts of the world are represented here and you can taste them. I have reduced my sodium intake way down, but what little I consume, I appreciate the quality. I'm grateful that a place like this exists near me.

I wasn't sure what to expect from my first sushi making experience. It seems like it would be…read moreridiculously hard to craft an edible roll. I was 100% sure that I would look like an idiot trying to recreate a delicacy that is made with such grace. Tracy made it easy and fun for us to enjoy ourselves while making some outstanding sushi. Everything is set up to be foolproof (for the most part, I still found a way to mess a few things up), so you don't have to worry about it. You'll be interacting with others who are making things for the first time, and are just looking for a different type of date night. Tracy was also teaching us methodology and science behind why sushi is made a certain way in Japanese culture, even going as deep as helping us prepare rice to a certain temperature before using it. And it's good that they make the process simple here, because you're making your own dinner at the end of the night. The sushi class is a fun one, because you eat as the night goes on. You start off by making a couple hand rolls, then some another sushi course (blanking on the name), and end up making a massive sushi cake as the final dish, something I have never even seen or heard of before. I love what the pantry is doing for the community by having these cooking classes, and I can't wait to get back in here to try some more.
