I've visited D'amatos plenty of times, they're on most of the lists for the best sandwiches in Chicago, for a reason. Be prepared to wait in a line most days and be a little cramped for a minute before getting your food. You'll see why it's worth it. While you're there, pick up some pastries. They have a great assortment of Italian desserts. They make it really difficult to not want to order something because everything looks so good. After many visits, I tried the pizza, which was pretty unremarkable to me, but we went towards the end of the day, so that's probably why. The sandwiches are all great - I highly recommend their typical Italian cold subs, but they also have warm subs like the vodka chicken parm and vodka meatball. We dabbled in a little bit of everything and my best advice is try a sub. Their Italian bread is made in house and worth every bite. One of the greatest sandwiches ever. The vodka chicken parm. I wasn't even that hungry going in I thought I would just eat half, but I finished it in one sitting. The flavor keeps you going. Normally with a lot of chicken sandwiches you sometimes get a harder part you can't completely bite down in, but this one was so soft and tender and as you can see a more than generous portion of sauce and cheese. My Papa and my dad worked for the City of Chicago as concrete masons, and this was always their go-to lunch spot. Anytime we had family parties growing up, someone would bring food from here. When I was little, I actually thought the place was called "Grand and May" because that's the intersection it's on -- and that's what my Papa lovingly called it. In our family we'd always say, "Who's bringing the Grand and May?" Of course, it was really D'Amato's. Now that I'm 48, it's been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My Papa loved food and he loved family, so this place will always bring back special memories for me. Yesterday my boyfriend and I stopped in on one of those rare, beautiful early spring days in Chicago (March 8). There was a line out the door, but everyone waiting was friendly and excited to be there, and we happily stayed because we knew it would be worth it. They even had zeppole for St. Joseph's Day, which I always look forward to every March. Inside, the place runs like a well-oiled machine. Every person working there was kind, patient, and welcoming. We ordered two subs and two zeppole, and everything was absolutely delicious. If you want the freshest, most incredible bread in Chicago, this is the place. Authentic, traditional Italian food made with love. What really made the experience stand out was the kindness we experienced. I wanted one of their D'Amato's t-shirts in green, but they didn't have my size. An older gentleman, who I believe may be the owner, mentioned they had other colors, but I said that was okay and I'd grab one next time since we definitely plan to return. A few minutes later, after I stepped aside to hold our place, he quietly handed my boyfriend a t-shirt in my size and asked him to give it to me -- completely free. Just a simple act of kindness that meant so much. You can truly feel the love and pride that goes into this place. It's been a Chicago staple for years, and places like this are rare. The subs were good but his shady answer didn't leave me feeling as though he was being honest as he knew we were visiting from out of town. There is an old man that shuttles bread back and forth from this location to the wholesale business across the street. Food is great - egg and pepper sandwich and Italian were amazing but messy. The eggplant parm was a mess, and I found the eggplant too soggy. Service is not that good because the system is confusing. It's so busy at times so people waiting to order get mixed with people waiting for their food. Outdoor patio is nice but it's on a massive slope so be careful sitting. Came here for the viral TikTok chicken Cesar cutlets sandwich and it lived up to the hype. Life changing. The bread is fresh because they make it themselves. The cutlet was fresh and seasoned right. The lettuce was dressed enough and the balance of the dressing and the cheese and the mayo was perfect. Cesar can sometimes get too Parmesan, this wasn't that. Walking in the front door, it was busy which is great , however, there was no interaction really. Plenty of opportunity to sell an espresso or cappuccino but there was no effort. Plenty of opportunity to sell baked goods but there was no effort. Also, homemade gelato but there was no effort to sell. You have a captive crowd and no effort to even sample anything. Tiny little corner Italian bakery located in west town. We came here on a rainy weekday and let me tell you, this place was packed!! There's a tiny little area in the back corner with three stools (along with a small outdoor patio) if you want to snag a spot inside to eat but it's mainly a grab and go place. They have subs, pizza, cookies, cannoli. Honestly you name it, they probably have it. It's a little chaotic and hectic once you get in. This place is what you get when you close your eyes and think "Old School Italian bakery" the building is a throwback to when craftsmen built Chicago. The brick and stone exterior are something not found anymore. When you get into the bakery, the first thing that hits you is the amazing aroma of fresh bread, just behind that you can smell the garlic and sauce. The place just exudes old world charm and class. The menu is easy to read and understand, and the display cases of cookies, baked goods, and other treats almost makes you forget what you came in for...almost. We tried both the original chicken parm and the vodka chicken parm and while they both were good, the vodka chicken parm was just that much better than the og.....so much so that we came back about 2 weeks after our 1st visit and wondering if the memory was better....we were just as blown away by the flavor the second time as we were the first. While I have lived near this place for 4 years, I have never really thought about sliding through. I like sweets and baked goods but tend to stay away from bakeries for some reason lol. I saw an instastory highlighting their vodka chicken parm sandwich and it looked very good so I had to make the 15 min walk over to see what was up. I came by on a Friday around lunchtime (11:30) and it was a nice line inside. Standing room is available but it can get tight for a lunch rush. I was smart enough to call the order in before showing up so I wouldnt have to wait around in the congested standing space. While waiting in line I was able to take a look at all the delicious looking pastries, pizza and pastas. I definitely wanna come back for some pizza. They have a small area to sit near the window and a covered outdoor seating area, but I opted to run home and devour. Once I got home, I massacred that sandwich as it was as good as advertised...better than I thought actually! Best chicken parm I've had in some time. I came back a few days later for the pepper & egg sandwich with provolone and its the best I had ever! Very delicious! Get your order in and get you out the door in absolutely the nicest way possible, the location is small and usually pretty loud. At least when I've been. I love the organized chaos. There's really no room to eat inside, but they do have a decently sized covered patio that you grab a quick seat and eat. They have a tremendous selection - everything from cannolis, sfogliatella, cookies, pizzas, breads, soups, and sandwiches. My recent go to's have been the chicken cutlet Cesar sandwich or the Italian, add mayo and extraaaaaa hot giardiniera. But you can't go wrong with anything here. And of course, you gotta get a crispy Diet Coke and a chocolate covered cannoli. That's the lunch of kings right there. This sweet authentic Italian shop is located off Grand Avenuez the shop has a variety of breads, Italian ice, and cookies that you just drool over from the glass windows. This was a really nice experience! It's grab n go style with just 3 seats by the window, and I was lucky enough to get one of the seats! I've never been somewhere that made the food so FAST. There was very little turkey on it and it was missing the mustard I asked for and had tomatoes which I didn't ask for.
