We tried both the viral vodka parm sandwich and the classic Italian. While we tried not to let the hype around this place set expectations too high, we still left a bit underwhelmed by the sandwiches. The Italian felt a little understuffed, and while the vodka parm was good, it didn't have anything that really pushed it to the next level. That said, D'Amato's is still absolutely worth a stop. Their fresh cannolis and homemade breads are fantastic. The cannolis are flavorful with perfectly crunchy shells and a generous filling. While they may not quite rival the cannoli scene in Boston, they're some of the best we've had in Chicago.
Why 5 stars? Because I'll be thinking about the vodka parm for quite some time. --- --- --- My friend Issabelle recommended I visit D'amato's many moons ago, and I never forgot about it. I finally had the opportunity to stop in on my way back to the airport after a work conference and I'm so glad I did. The only issue with my plan is that I'd just had lunch a couple hours earlier and really wasn't ready to eat again. Plus, I'd probably be hungry again before bed if I ate "dinner" around 3pm, so I ordered my vodka parm and just let it hang out in backpack on my 70 minute Uber ride to the airport + another 20 or so minutes as I got through security and settled. And guess what? It was still amazing an hour and a half later? But yes, I absolutely took a couple bites when it was fresh and I truly fell in love. It's going to be hard to come back to Chicago without stopping in here. One of my favorite parts of the experience was after I'd gotten the sandwich and was hanging out inside waiting for my Uber for a few minutes. Hearing the most Chicago woman ever barking out, "waddya need", to each customer in that unmistakable midwestern accent... it actually made my sandwich taste even better. New York has the reputation for this kind of customer service, but don't sleep on Chicago! They're not being unfriendly - it's just their way.
A wonderful Italian bakery with a great selection of baked goods. I ordered a vodka chicken sandwich which was a huge portion. It was fresh out of the oven and super tasty with fresh ingredients like the basil taste coming through. It comes with a bit of a wait and there is no seating in the shop.
I've been meaning to come here forever!! The vodka chicken parm was everything you could want in a chicken parm sandwich. Be sure to eat it right away, as it WILL get soggy quickly otherwise. Also highly recommend adding giardiniera:) they gave us free cannolis while we waited and those were super crisp and stuffed well
Another stop on the Chicago Italian Deli Tour, D'Amato's. I'd been wanting to check this place out for a while since it's over in River West close by to me and as someone from Jersey, I've got very high standards when it comes to Italian subs. I miss having countless delis around, so I had to see if this one lived up to the hype. Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy but if you know how an Italian deli works, it's not too hard to navigate. A bunch of people waiting around, tight space, classic deli chaos. I grabbed an Italian sub and a Diet Coke. The sandwich was only $10, which is a steal in the city. My order was ready in about 10 minutes, which was awesome given the crowd. Staff was super friendly, made ordering easy, and I decided to eat outside, they've got a nice little seating area out there. The sandwich itself hit the spot: fresh bread, solid balance of meats, and I went with hot peppers, which added the perfect kick and the portions were overall great. Overall, D'Amato's absolutely delivered. Great sandwich, great price, great vibes. Easily one of the better Italian subs I've had in Chicago would come back anytime.
We came in on the coldest Saturday of the year so there wasn't a ton of people thankfully. I know how packed it can get in here. The service is pretty quick and they have an efficient system down where 2 guys take the orders and someone brings out the orders from the back. I got a vodka chicken cutlet parm sandwich and a chicken cutlet Caesar sandwich w chips. I also got a box of Italian cookies. All the food is very on point. In fact, I came back a few weeks later to get the same meal. The inside gives very classic Italian deli vibes. They leave their loaves of bread just in the front window, which I find interesting. Parking is not great here and it's often very packed so I only come here at odd hours when the weather is bad lol do as you wish though!
Came to get a few baked items from this local bakery. D'Amato's is a long time favorite among those who live around here. It also supplies a lot of the breads and pastries to restaurants in West Town. Get some things here to try them even fresher. The interior is kind of cramped but they also have a patio. Bakeries certainly have lots of breads, but that's not all you can get here. It's also got quite a few savory and sweet items. They have things for grab and go, as well as made to order specials. Most popular is of course the freshly baked breads. These go way beyond the usual Italian loaves. Focaccia is among the best of it you can find. You can also choose to stay awhile and have an actual meal. Get a seat in the dining area. They have smaller hand made pizzas, but big enough for a couple people. Also they have Italian ice. That's a great way to finish off. Has several flavors. There's also a pretty great selection of cannoli and other sweets. For sure it's one of the old school classics. It's located on Grand Avenue at May. They also do catering for events so call ahead and they'll bake up tons of things.
I read about this place on a list of the best chicken parms in the country, this was Illinois' best and i have to say the article was right on point. I came here while visiting my folks and got the vodka chicken parm and to be honest, i dont think i will ever want another chicken parm again except this one. The sauce was bright and deep and flavorful. the chicken cutlet was tender and delicious, the cheese was perfectly melty. The bread offers a sturdy base to hold the yum. I will dream about this
As soon as i walked in i was overwhelmed with the variety of food on display, instantly wanting to try everything in the restaurant. The interior for sure brings out the vintage bakery vibe. Ordering is fast paced so be sure to be ready when you order. Ordered the chicken caesar sandwich, pepperoni pizza and focaccia bread. The sandwich was delicious, the dressing was flavorful and the breaded chicken had a great texture. The pizza was soft with a bit of crisp. And the focaccia bread was flavorful with the sauce on top. Overall great experience and am excited to try more of their menu in the future.
This place was so packed when we walked in which was a good sign. They move quickly and there are multiple people taking orders. There is not much standing room so you may get confused by people waiting for their order. I got the chicken parm sandwich and it was amazing. I mean just take a look at the photo. The portion size is a bit small for me but I would go back. I really want to try their italian sandwich. There is no seating in the store itself but they have a patio next door with heaters and cover for winter. It was super nice and toasty in there but it can be hard to find a seat.

One of the greatest sandwiches ever. The vodka chicken parm. I wasn't even that hungry going in I thought I would just eat half, but I finished it in one sitting. The flavor keeps you going. Normally with a lot of chicken sandwiches you sometimes get a harder part you can't completely bite down in, but this one was so soft and tender and as you can see a more than generous portion of sauce and cheese. It gets really crowded inside though. Very Italian walking in, it was fantastic. They had an old school coffee maker that I didn't get to try... yet. I will definitely be coming back for their baked goods and the vodka meatball! read more

It's really good!! But a little overhyped imo, if you love a classic Italian sub this is the place to go. I just happen to love extra veggies/ lettuce/ salad on my sandwich so I always find myself to be wanting a little more here. Vodka chicken parm is good. Malfada is the best sandwich I've had there. Chicken Caesar is good ( but not worth it to me because I like lots of lettuce if you don't it's perfect!) Service is always slow. 15 minute call ahead for 2 sandwiches turns into a 45 minute wait every time. read more

The chicken cutlets they place in their subs are EXCELLENT! Get the chicken parm sub as that's what they are known for. The chicken ceaser sub is not as good. Homemade bread made across the street is very soft and pillowy. They also have plenty of sweet treats, coffee, and pizza too. I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars because the chaos it is inside. There is no organization. No one knows where to stand to order or wait for their order. You are rushed at the counter amongst the sea of people and the staff being overwhelmed. Amazing old school bakery that does sandwiches, treats and pizza. The ambience is kick ass because it is so old school traditional. There is an old man that shuttles bread back and forth from this location to the wholesale business across the street. Food is great - egg and pepper sandwich and Italian were amazing but messy. The eggplant parm was a mess, and I found the eggplant too soggy. Service is not that good because the system is confusing. It's so busy at times so people waiting to order get mixed with people waiting for their food. Outdoor patio is nice but it's on a massive slope so be careful sitting. It's a 4.5/5 with a .5 reduction based on the service issues we had. read more

Wonderful experience! The food was awesome. You cannot go wrong with the Caesar chicken cutlet sub, the original focaccia, or a slice of cheese pizza. I had to buy all of the above :) This is a delicious gem of a spot. A true Italian eatery. The owner and the rest of the D'Amato's family is so kind and they're ready to help recommend a ton of tasty options in their shop. I truly loved this spot. Such a fun, lively shop. Don't skip the cookies!! P.S. - They have a small outdoor patio area that is absolutely perfect to enjoy all of the goodies your get! read more

Came here for the viral TikTok chicken Cesar cutlets sandwich and it lived up to the hype. Life changing. The bread is fresh because they make it themselves. The cutlet was fresh and seasoned right. The lettuce was dressed enough and the balance of the dressing and the cheese and the mayo was perfect. Cesar can sometimes get too Parmesan, this wasn't that. Come get this sandwich and everything else they sell. If i lived in Chicago, I'd be here often. It's a small deli with great service and a friendly environment. Tiny little corner Italian bakery located in west town. We came here on a rainy weekday and let me tell you, this place was packed!! There's a tiny little area in the back corner with three stools (along with a small outdoor patio) if you want to snag a spot inside to eat but it's mainly a grab and go place. They have subs, pizza, cookies, cannoli. Honestly you name it, they probably have it. It's a little chaotic and hectic once you get in. Everyone's cramped in the middle of the bakery and you walk up and place an order at the front counter, People are yelling out orders, it's pure chaos. Reminds me of NYC. We got the chicken parm sub and the vodka chicken parm. We both loved the vodka one better. The sauce was just so creamy and the bread was flaky and soft. We also got a bunch of cookies and cannoli to try as well. Nice little spot, glad we were able to stop by and try! read more
I mean how much more packed can this place get?! And for good reason! Great, friendly, and fast service from all their staff. You see the same people on the weekends and that says a lot in this industry. Gives a family feel and all their cousins pay a visit every weekend so expect to be shoulder to shoulder inside on a Saturday. The space seems tight but it's deceiving. No problem though, you'll be in and out before you know it with the best sub in the city in your hands. We've had their Vodka Meatball sub, Vodka Chicken Parm sub, and their Italian. We typically rotate between the three and all are hits. Saucy, not too messy, and full of flavor. They don't skimp on the feelings and the bread is fresh. Also, best Italian cookies in the city - they have it all y'all. We always get an assortment of chocolate kolackys, sprinkle cookies, turtle (unreal), sesame and so on. Starts at $16.99lb and you can get more or less of course. Afraid to try any other desserts because we're hooked as it is. Pro tip: call ahead and give your name at the counter after your quoted time for pickup. They even took my order for cookies in advance. Came in clutch on a weekend. read more

I've never had a bad bite here. Outside of a Pub Sub, D'amato's is my fav spot to get a delicious sub. Service stands on business here because they are always slammed. Get your order in and get you out the door in absolutely the nicest way possible, the location is small and usually pretty loud. At least when I've been. I love the organized chaos. There's really no room to eat inside, but they do have a decently sized covered patio that you grab a quick seat and eat. They have a tremendous selection - everything from cannolis, sfogliatella, cookies, pizzas, breads, soups, and sandwiches. My recent go to's have been the chicken cutlet Cesar sandwich or the Italian, add mayo and extraaaaaa hot giardiniera. But you can't go wrong with anything here. And of course, you gotta get a crispy Diet Coke and a chocolate covered cannoli. That's the lunch of kings right there. Save yourself sometime and come after the weekday lunch rush l, it's still busy but not as bad. read more

Love this shop! I've been meaning to check it out for a while now and it delivered! This sweet authentic Italian shop is located off Grand Avenuez the shop has a variety of breads, Italian ice, and cookies that you just drool over from the glass windows. I ordered the vodka chicken Parmesan sandwich and it is an absolute MUST. It's messy, but cheesy, flavorful, and insanely delicious. I also loved my watermelon Italian ice, very authentic! Can't wait to come back to try out all of their desserts and yummy cookies! read more
This place is what you get when you close your eyes and think "Old School Italian bakery" the building is a throwback to when craftsmen built Chicago. The brick and stone exterior are something not found anymore. When you get into the bakery, the first thing that hits you is the amazing aroma of fresh bread, just behind that you can smell the garlic and sauce. The place just exudes old world charm and class. The menu is easy to read and understand, and the display cases of cookies, baked goods, and other treats almost makes you forget what you came in for...almost. We tried both the original chicken parm and the vodka chicken parm and while they both were good, the vodka chicken parm was just that much better than the og.....so much so that we came back about 2 weeks after our 1st visit and wondering if the memory was better....we were just as blown away by the flavor the second time as we were the first. We also took home a sampling of the cookies, and the lemon were great, and made me wish we bought more. read more
Cutest place! Reminds me of a New York bakery! Staff were super friendly, there was a line but it moved super fast! I got the chicken Caesar club. The chicken cutlet was sooo yummy! It was missing something, maybe needed more dressing on the salad. I cut up some sport peppers and added them in. I want to try the Italian ice next time! read more
This was a really nice experience! It's grab n go style with just 3 seats by the window, and I was lucky enough to get one of the seats! I've never been somewhere that made the food so FAST. It was kind of unreal how quick. They had complimentary hot fried dough balls to try when I got there too- the texture was perfect and the flavor was delicious. I had a custard lobster tail to go also that was a lovely crunch with the perfect custard amount and flavor inside. I'll definitely go back. read more
While I have lived near this place for 4 years, I have never really thought about sliding through. I like sweets and baked goods but tend to stay away from bakeries for some reason lol. I saw an instastory highlighting their vodka chicken parm sandwich and it looked very good so I had to make the 15 min walk over to see what was up. I came by on a Friday around lunchtime (11:30) and it was a nice line inside. Standing room is available but it can get tight for a lunch rush. I was smart enough to call the order in before showing up so I wouldnt have to wait around in the congested standing space. While waiting in line I was able to take a look at all the delicious looking pastries, pizza and pastas. I definitely wanna come back for some pizza. They have a small area to sit near the window and a covered outdoor seating area, but I opted to run home and devour. Once I got home, I massacred that sandwich as it was as good as advertised...better than I thought actually! Best chicken parm I've had in some time. I came back a few days later for the pepper & egg sandwich with provolone and its the best I had ever! Very delicious! They have other sandwiches I need to come back and try so this will be part of my West Loop lunch rotation. read more

Pulled up to the D'amato's Bakery today and it was so busy. This made me very excited because I was like wow this place must be good. Got the 9'' turkey and was underwhelmed unfortunately. There was very little turkey on it and it was missing the mustard I asked for and had tomatoes which I didn't ask for. I will say the bread stole the show for the sandwich but probably because there wasn't much inside it. Took a long time to get the food but I will say the man who assisted me with ordering was super nice and helpful. Also got a slice of pizza - I haven't ate yet but hoping it is as good as it looked! read more
Best Italian subs in the city! There's a reason why there's usually a line, but the food is worth it. My favorites are the Italian and vodka chicken Parm, but I've tried the roast beef, tuna, and eggplant sandwiches and they've all been delicious. The I side of the shop is pretty small since they also have a bakery and pizza on display, but you can sit outside which is what many people do. read more

Went to try the viral chicken parm sandwich and it didn't disappoint! It was deliciously saucy and the chicken was so juicy. We also tried the prosciutto + bocconcini and it was a ringer! One of my top sandwiches in the city! Would definitely try these two when you go. The chicken Cesar was not my favorite - I mean it was against two amazing sandwiches and just didn't perform as well for me. We ate out on the patio, but I would definitely also just to pick up subs. It's a smaller place, so it looked very crowded, but the line moved very quickly. read more

Finally tried this place that was completely worth the hype! The line was long on a Saturday but it moved very quickly. The vodka sauce was the best I've ever had and the chicken cutlet was so delicious. A lot of people were getting the pan pizzas so I will definitely be back to try that. It's pretty small in there so keep that in mind while you wait but definitely worth a visit. read more

This place has been at my most wanted subs to try for SO long and I'm so excited to say that the wait was 10000% worth it! Right off the bat, don't expect to just walk in and walk out. No matter when you go, there is bound to be a wait. In our case, I waited almost 45 mins. But again, I would do it all over for that sub. There's a few tables outside where you can grab and eat, if you find some space. We ended up eating in our cars because it was so packed! Lol Although they're called Damatos Bakery, they have a lot more than just fresh bread. You can get some amazing sandwiches, pastas, salads, soups, desserts, cookies, and much more. I got their super viral vodka chicken parm sandwich along with a slice of the pepperoni pizza and a slice of the supreme pizza. Both pizza slices were absolutely delicious - they were thick slices (which I LOVEE) and the sauce and cheese and toppings were all so flavorful and fresh! Now onto the reason I went here to begin with - the vodka parm sandwich was absolutely unreal. The vodka sauce is so creamy, a little tangy, and just the right amount of spices and flavor. The bread was crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. The chicken was perfectly crispy, so well flavored, and just fit so well into the entire dish. Every single component of this sandwich was absolutely perfect!! I don't know how they do it! Would I go back?! 10000% YES! And I'm so so excited to try all of their other sandwiches on the menu! I'm not a big sandwich person, but they definitely changed my mind. One of the best spots in the city for me! read more

D'amato's is a place if you know you know if you don't now you know. It's a local spot to the West town near the River West area. We've drove past a handful of times because my girlfriend lives in the area and we finally got the chance to stop in on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed. The service was friendly. It was worth the wait and my girlfriend got an Italian sandwich and I got a slice of cheese. The fact that they've been there for a long time is awesome. Definitely be prepared to wait a little bit because of how busy they are but again it's worth the wait because their food is delicious. And I think for the sandwich and a slice of cheese we spent less than 15 bucks. The one thing though is that if you're not in the area, and you're driving sometimes it may be a little bit hard to find parking, but there's parking up and down grand so hopefully it shouldn't be that hard. Overall, I am happy about this place, we will be back and we totally understand the hype. They also have tons of baked cookies by the pound and they have fresh hot coffee. It's just really a good atmosphere overall. read more

There was a line when we arrived 15minutes before they closed. No biggie, the service is fast so the line went by fast. The staff was very nice and helpful + patient with my husband's questions. Reasonable prices. A simple cookie was SO GOOD! We ordered a shot of espresso and they used this vintage coffee machine that looked so cool but most importantly expresso was delicious. I was able to sit by the window and wait for my expresso. Even though it's a bit small they do have a small table by the window with three chairs, perfect for a quick snack. read more
