Ordered D'Amatos pizza through Uber eats since I'm new to the la Mesa Area. Pizza and sandwich was delicious. Antipasto uses Genoa salami. I think it would be better if they used hard dry salami. Good portions overall. We will order again and try the lasagna. Will skip the antipasto salad next time. read more

I have always loved their pizza, but it's been awhile since we have ordered from them. I looked through the Yelp reviews and was sad to see that the reviews were not great for delivery. Remembering the tasty pizza flavor I crossed my fingers and ordered two large pizzas to be delivered on a Thursday night. When the confirmation came through I had to roll my eyes at the 90 minute time frame. "Here we go, just like the reviews said." We prepared ourselves to wait for the pizzas and I asked my husband to check for quality control. I'm happy to report that the pizzas were delivered within 45 minutes and they were perfect! Pizza 2 hours late!! Called MIKE who answered the phone was VERY RUDE!! Said they wrote down the wrong address!!! Also, said they tried calling me, I WAS NEVER CALLED ONCE!! Ok so this is a favorite place of mine. They have good food and good prices. On the other hand they seriously lack skills in the pizza making business. This is the second time I have had issues with pizza from this place. The first was a simple misunderstanding witch was fixed by the owner. That brings us to tonight. The first pizza they made was made wrong, it is supposed to be pepperoni and half green peppers and half mushrooms. So they made a new one and this is what I got. I've been ordering pizzas from D'Amatos since High School and I graduated in 94. Food is decent and so are the prices. I'm a chef and I can't believe how long their wait times are especially for pick up...1 hour plus...REALLY! I'd be fired if food took me that long to put food out especially Pizza, Pasta, sandwiches and salads which makes up probably 70% of their business. Unfortunately last night we had a terrible experience with our delivery order. We ordered 1/2 Hawaiian 1/2 D'Amatos special on a thin crust. We had previously ordered this exact pizza and it was a perfect crispy crust and not soggy. Unlike last night, the crust was so soggy that when I went to take a slice out of the box the crust stuck to the cardboard and the cheese and topping slid right off. The pizza still tasted good but it was not good quality. If you are going to sell thin crust pizza figure out a ratio of cheese and toppings where your crust can still be eatable. I called the restaurant and asked to speak to a manager and the young man told me he could help me. I told him our concerns left my contact information for the manager to call me and they didn't. The pizza place I usually order from was closed on Sunday so I decided to give D'amato's a try. If you like a lot of cheese and dense bready crust, you might like this pizza. Probably just a matter of personal preference, but I found this pizza to be extremely greasy, too cheesy and the toppings I ordered were sparse and buried under all the cheese. Currently I work out in La Mesa and I was hungry when I saw a sign for this pizza place. Inside, there isn't anywhere to sit and I was informed by the man behind the counter that they couldn't do slices (they were out), so I would have to have a personal pan pizza. So, I ordered one of the lunch specials. A personal pizza with one topping (mushrooms), a salad with blue cheese dressing, and a soda (dr. pepper). Getting my food, I went into my car to eat. The salad is what earns this place the extra star. It was not just anemic iceberg, but rather dark green and leafy, looking pretty healthy and fresh. The blue cheese dressing was pretty thick and yummy too. D'Amato's pizza on the other hand was very disappointing. The dough had that slimy bread-like texture that failed to inspire. The sauce was boring and yet par for the course for pizza's I've eaten out here in the west. Finally the cheese was just there with really no value added. The mushrooms were little measly dried mushrooms that one would expect from any chain or local shop. It reminded me a lot of Mazara's in South Park. It was just boring and dull across the board. So much so, that when I had a piece left, I didn't even save it for later. I am pretty sure that THIS is a sin in the eyes of any deity. Yes, it is one of the ten commandments "Thou shall not cast leftover pizza from thy sight." D'Amato's Pizza is sub-par for what I've eaten and yet sadly par for the course for Southern Californian Pizza. read more

040 / 100 - 2016 YELP 100 CHALLENGE. Decent pizza for a decent price. I've had D'Amatos a few times and each time has been great. Delivery is always on time, staff has always been polite - never run into any issues! They have a great selection of pizza and even offer catering. I've only ever had the pizza so I can't say much about anything else, but the pizza has been okay every time I've had it. I think it's best if you eat their pizza fresh. The pizza is tasty (if not a little greasy), but I've noticed that the pizza can never stay together. And by "never stay together" I mean the toppings and cheese separate from the dough and fall apart. This only seems to happen when it's gotten cold, so I have no idea if that has anything to do with it? Can't complain about it too much as the prices are dirt, dirt cheap. My work place has bought D'Amatos multiple times and it does the job intended: keeps everyone happy, full, and satisfied. Food would be 5 stars, but service = 0 stars. We have ordered for delivery 3 times from this place, and all three times our order has been messed up. The food is fantastic - but we've been bummed that we didn't get what we ordered. The most recent order was for a vegetarian pizza, and it had SAUSAGE on it! Not like a piece or two that accidentally fell onto the pizza - massive amounts of sausage, on a VEGETARIAN pizza! Yeah, that went over well with my veggie brother! (BTW, it was delicious, but only if you're a meat eater!!!!) I told the guy on the phone that I would be paying with a credit card, but he apparently didn't pass it on to the driver - the driver had to call it in and it took forever to complete the transaction in my driveway. This review really is hard for me to write. I loved D'amatos for years and years. Even when we moved on the opposite side of La Mesa we still ventured all the way over there to pick up some pizza. But recently the quality of the pizza has dropped. And this is something we have noticed over many, many pizzas. We have 2 default pizzas - either peperoni and mushrooms or pineapple and ham. Always get an extra large with extra cheese from the coupon they always have. First off the crust has got WAY thin. To say this is paper thin would be saying it is thicker than it really is. And the crust gets soggy and becomes impossible to eat as pizza should be eaten. The grease on the peperoni pizza is obsessive and you could power a mid-size car with the amount of grease on that thing. The amount of water on the pineapple pizza (from the canned pineapple) is almost enough to go swimming in. There is two things that need to be done for this place to regain its crown it once had. - Thicker crust all around ESPICALLY on the middle of the pizza. - Get rid of the grease/water that makes your pizza soggy and impossible to eat in the fashion pizza should be eaten (by hand). Still great tasting pizza - but has fallen sharply from how it was before. read more

I use to eat here all the time. I called for pickup on a Friday.super busy..That's Ok! They told me an hour. I walk up past the hour time frame. My food was Not even processed yet...:( I waited 20 more minutes. Took my food home to find a veggie sandwich with no cheese. All the veggies I asked NOT to.put on it. Cold meatball sandwich also. This pizza is AMAZING! Plus the quality/amount of pizza you're getting for the price seems like a novelty! Huge large pizza is $15 i think. And that thing is huge. We have 3 adults here and we still have leftovers. I only ever ordered delivery. Because the concept of living somewhere where I can actually have pizza delivered to me is still too much for me to get over - haha! My only complaint is I live like right down the street pretty much and it takes them over an hr. sometimes to deliver my pizza. I dunno, but to me that seems a little ridiculous. First time we tried this place I was thrown off by their onions because they were the long skinny kind and were everywhere on the pizza. It was also a little TOO greasy. Fast forward years later and we decided to try them out again. My favorite type of pizza is a good cheese pizza with lots of cheese and a crispy taste to it. I asked if they could make he cheese a little crispier this time around. When the time came to eat our pizza, I was pleasantly surprised! I love a pizza that has a decent thick crust and excellent cheese. We are going to try the other types of pizza soon but we'll be specific in what we want. Dmatos used to be my goto. Like once a week or every other but they started getting sloppy. The last time I ordered, when it got to me it was all messed up from being tossed around in the car or something. This time, I ordered and paid over the phone and asked if they could leave it at the door because my kids were asleep and I didn't want the dogs barking. They said they'll have him call me to let me know, I thought oh great, that's easier than guessing if it's here. Well...over an hour later no call. Decided to check, low and behold there it was. My friends just moved to town and ordered pizza from this joint called, "D'Amato's". I had never heard of them before and am a huge pizza fan. Being from Chicago, and now in San Diego, I have to say I have been spoiled as far as decent pizza goes. There are several pizza places out here in Ca., as well as in other states west of Il,. that claim they have "Chicago style pizza" and the vast majority don't even come close. Well these guys are pretty awesome as far as that's concerned. As a previous reviewer has stated the pizza is quite a bit, "oily". This is because they use a much heavier amount of cheese than your average pizza place does. WAY MORE!!! Cheesy pizza is what makes a pizza. Well that and sauce. They have not once messed up any of my orders and the prices are pretty good. I have made a large, 3 topping pizza (under $14), last me 3 days!!! I am pretty darn full after 3 slices and just eat this great tasting food every day until it's gone. While it's still quite a bit from Il. pizza it is one of the best pizza places I have found in Ca. It comes closer to Il. pizza than any other place out here and that includes a place that specializes in "Chicago style". I am now very interested in trying much of their other stuff like Lasagne and Ravioli. My friends had these and said they were amazing. read more

I am outraged by the terrible service I received this evening from this restaurant. I ordered a pizza for delivery and was told it would be an hour; I mean for just a medium pizza and a small salad it seemed excessive but I understood because it's a rainy night. We received our pizza about and hour and 15 minutes later. Again, I understood because it's a rainy night. When we opened the box, we realized the order was completely wrong. I called the restaurant and spoke with a very rude man who was completely unapologetic; he simply made excuses for getting our order wrong. He said they would bring a new pizza, but again- we had already waited over an hour and were starving at this point. I asked for a refund just for the pizza, but he said the only thing he would do is give us a credit. I explained that we most likely wouldn't be dining or ordering from there again because of the lack of customer service, but he just said they would only give me a credit. When I said "no thank you" he hung up on me. I am completely appalled at the lack of respect and any semblance of customer service from this place. Not to mention, now that we're actually eating the pizza (after picking off all of the disgusting toppings we didn't order) it's really soggy and pretty gross. D'amato's is my local pizza joint. Usually order the Mushroom & Olive, or just Pineapple, but every single pizza I've had has been spot on delicious. Their "Family Deal" for $20ish is incredible. Two dinners, garlic bread and salad. We order the manicotti and meat ravioli; both are outstanding. Whether I phone in or pick up, the staff is incredibly friendly, accommodating and efficient. Okay so my first impression of this place wasn't so good, but after eating there a couple more times I decided to bump it up to three stars. First time I ordered pizza from there is was covered in grease and the cheese slid right off the pizza when you picked it up. EW! Second time I got the manicotti, very rich and delicious. Third time I ordered the foot long veggie sandwich... it has potential except it was soggy and wet from the dressing they put on it. Literally was dripping all over me when I tried to eat it. But it was a good sandwhich, would have been better if it wasn't a soggy mess. I'm bumping this place up to 3 stars not because of the food, but because everytime I go here the people working there are always really nice and friendly. The quality of the food is A-Ok but the prices are good especially for takeout. Must call way ahead of time for takeout or delivery because they are BUSY. You can find coupons online but I have never been asked to show the coupon. In one occasion, we had to wait 1 hour and 30 minutes for an order that was supposed to take 30 minutes to be delivered at our home. We called and the customer service was horrible. This man would tell us to keep waiting, never apologized. My husband had to cancel the order because we were still waiting after two hours and the person at D'Amato's was horrible to deal with. There isn't consistency in the service and no realibility on their delivery or even takeout which sometimes takes too long. The portions are good but not massive (they are just perfect). Definitely one of my favorite places to go for pizza. Usually order the extra large (I like how when you order extra pepperoni they put it under AND on top of the cheese)... it's huge and completely reasonable as far as price goes, especially with their PennySaver coupon. As far as the rest of the food, I can say the spaghetti's not the greatest, the lasagna and ravioli are pretty decent though, but like I said this is mainly my go to place for pizza.
