SOOOOO worth the hype. We got here around 1:15pm on a Saturday. There were only 5 people in front of us and 3 people behind us. After the last person in line ordered they closed the window and said they were closed. More people kept showing up to order and they were turned away. They did decide to open the window back up around 1:45 because they got a delivery of something they were out of! We ordered the combo plate for $25 because why would you not want to try two items instead of one for $20?? We ordered the world famous pan fried poke and furikake crusted mahi mahi. We only waited about 10 minutes for our order and the lady working the window was SO kind and thankful. We sat down at a picnic table and dug in. The sauce really makes the dish and I can't eat poke any other way now. The fish was incredibly seasoned and so flaky fresh. This is my new all time favorite meal I hope to enjoy yearly. Where do I start? Get there early, be hungry and try as much as you can. It lives up to the hype and everything that Netflix talked about. We pulled up and we saw we got lucky as the line wasn't too bad. We waited about 5-10 mins and got to order. As soon as we did the line grew to about a 30 mins wait quickly. We ordered a couple of things as to try as much as we could before going some place else to eat. I got the 2 meat plate with pan seared poke and braised boneless Kalbi beef with extra Mac salad and my wife breakfast plate which was the eggs and teri furikaki spam along with rice. Let me just say this now get the 2 meat plate and thank me later. Even if you take it home it's worth it. The pan seared poke is a game changer and something we drove from the other side of the island to have. The kalibi beef is so tender and cooked perfectly you could just pull it apart with your fork. The breakfast plate was so simple, but at the same time great the egg, rice and Teri spam is always a great combo and it hit the spot on a traditional breakfast. If you are ever on that side of the island stop by and give yourself a treat. One plus ordered our food was that we saw chef James cooking our food and that was the cherry on top. Watching the master at work and seeing him doing what he loves was awesome. When we go back we are definitely going to Da Bald Guy again. read more

Da Bald Guy!! WOW! This is an easy 5 Stars! When we were in North Shore and planning our trip. This was a MUST for us to visit and they didn't disappoint. Saw them on Netflix Street Food and knew we needed to try it. The wait wasn't too bad, but there was a lot of people here that day. The cashier was very friendly and hospitable. I heard that Da Bald Guy did a good breakfast and the rumors were correct. As I looked at the breakfast menu, I was torn, but then I saw what one of the other diners was eating. The cashier said that this was the garlic shrimp and short rib combo, so that's what I got. No regrets. The garlic shrimp was of the ilk you'd find at any shrimp vendor in the Kahuku area - buttery, garlicky, delicious. The short ribs were the most tender I have ever eaten, and had a lovely flavor (not traditional Korean kalbi, but something saucier with maybe a Filipino adobo influence). The size of the serving was massive (!), too, which is always a plus for me - I didn't need anything else to eat for the rest of the day. This was 3.5 stars for me, but since you can't do half stars, this place just isn't worthy of 4 stars so had to go to 3. Slightly disappointing considering the good reviews. Came here and got a combo plate for $25 with garlic shrimp and kalbi. The garlic shrimp was pretty good, also nice that they were peeled so it was less messy to eat. The kalbi was not. It had a weird preserved taste like teriyaki beef jerky, and while it was "tender", it was only tender because it was probably sitting in a crock pot all day. It wasn't good and I didn't finish it. A lot of the meat was inedible due to gristle, not just fat. Cashier was friendly enough. This is a food truck so don't expect a fancy dining experience, in fact I felt pretty crowded because people were standing in line right next to us as everything was jammed too close together, there needs to be more space so people standing in line aren't just standing right in front of your table. Overall, with so many good food options on the North Shore, particularly in the food truck scene, this is not worth it. First time we came around lunch but they only had like 2 things left so we waited til the next weekend, left earlier and got here like 9ish Mac salad: they mix the hot sauce into the mac salad we all did not like it. Garlic shrimp: cooked to PERFECTION and love that they dont use the shell on shrimp but it needed salt. The butter disappeared into the rice so i started scooping up the rice but no flavor there either :( Salmon: had to peel off the skin so we lost half the breading but was also cooked to perfection and had no fishy taste but not too much flavor Braised short ribs. Situated in a food truck park on the North Shore is Da Bald Guy. I do not like fish but I was open to trying Da Bald Guy because his concept of pan fried poke is unique and I was curious! Hey, I am in Hawaii so why not?. My local friend tried it first and she does not like poke but she tasted a small bit of this poke and her eyes lit up and she said that it was delicious! I tasted it and to my surprise it doesn't have a fish flavor and the texture is pleasant. My husband had the furikake crusted salmon and it was good. We enjoyed the food so much that we got more to go! This is a great way to introduce poke to someone who's never had it and also a way to just have some awesome food from a guy who's passion for his craft shines through in the food he makes! I had the bald guy on the radar prior to Netflix for awhile - I even missed their pop up at Ohana Marketplace. As a townie, going to the north shore is probably at the most once a year if you have any visitors coming in that you're showing around. Their popularity grew once the show came out and i attempted to go here at least 3 times. If you're planning on coming during the weekend to get the fried chicken sandwiches, i would suggest you come here first around 10am and then head over and stand in the sandwich line around noon. This time i was extremely lucky to get there with just one item sold out (the chopped steak at 1030a). I got 2 combo plates - 1 plate with mixed kalbi and fried poke, and 1 plate with salmon and garlic shrimp. Both plates were about $44. The food was pretty average. Yes, I discovered Da Bald Guy from Netflix: Street Food USA (Hawaii edition). And you hear about this kid wanting the approval of his father, and trying to gain it by following his father's process of making food. I actually had this spot bookmarked on Yelp prior to seeing him on Netflix, but after watching the Oahu episode on my flight over, I was like YUP, no way I'm missing out. I was reaaally hoping I'd get to meet James but he unfortunately wasn't in the day I stopped by. The woman working the front was pretty friendly though! They have a sign up letting everyone know wait times can be 30 min to an hour if they're busy. This was accurate, as we waited about 30min for our two plates. They were pumping out orders but they're busy OK?! They have a little bit of seating in front of the truck, otherwise you can go to the other lot behind the truck and find seating in front of Giovanni's. People were posting up on the grass as well, so you could always have a little picnic outside or in your car. Make sure you get here early because they do sell out of things pretty quickly. We got there at 10:30AM and they sold out of Salmon by 11AM. While we were waiting for our food, I heard the cashier disappoint quite a few customers. I opted for a two item plate because I wanted to try more than one thing! Pan Fried Poke - 9/10 Chipotle Cajun Butter Shrimp - 9/10 Both were delicious but I wish they were spicy! I love all the garlic sauce that came with the Shrimp too. Those babies were juicy but I didn't get much spice, even though it said spicy, so maybe ask for more of a kick if you like more heat. The pan fried poke was yummy and I loved that it was cooked with onions, drooool. I think I could have used a little sriracha to round things out but overall, I'm a fan. When my family and I were compiling our list of restaurants and places to visit, my #1 priority eatery to grub at was Da Bald Guy food truck. No matter what we did on our 9-day vacation to Oahu, Hawaii, Da Bald Guy was THE one place I had to chow down at. I discovered Da Bald Guy by watching Street Foods on Netflix where this food truck and the all too familiar relatable story was featured. It told the story of the father who taught the son how to cook, but was overbearing and the son stopped working with his father deciding to go off on his own to find his way. When the father realized that he needed his son and that his son was as good if not better than him, they reunited and are now successfully running Da Bald Guy. What I ate at Da Bald Guy, which was not what I really wanted, solidified my belief that Hawaii is not only paradise, but it's a foodie paradise. Da Bald Guy can be found venturing out to the North Shore, specifically Kahuku. It is a picturesque drive to Kahuku and I suggest that you make a full day out of your visit to the North Shore because of the beautiful and picturesque beaches, the large sea turtles chilling on the sand, and the delectable food and desserts that can be found throughout the area. We were staying in Waikiki and from there, it's about an hour drive of passing by amazing and natural paradise. Don't let that hour drive deter you because you'll regret it if you don't venture out. The North Shore is comprised of several areas where there are a collection of food trucks on the side of the road. Da Bald Guy is no exception as its next to Makahoa Pizza Company, across from the Kahuku Beer Garden, and a convenience store. I'm giving Da Bald Guy 4.9 stars just because it sold out of the food item I travelled to Oahu for and I didn't get to meet Da Bald Guy himself. I was told by the customer service friendly employee behind the register that Da Bald Guy is only there in the morning and is out early. Please don't forget your customers that actually travel more than 2000 miles to eat your food and want to meet you. The staff that was actually there provided Aloha spirit and memorable customer service. There is only outdoor seating and you might have to eat in your car because of how popular this food truck has become. Our first stop on Monday June 12th was to have lunch at Da Bald Guy. After being a little disappointed that Da Bald Guy wasn't there, I proceeded to peruse the menu and was about to order the entrée that I was determined to sink my taste buds into. To my dismay and sadness, the Pan Fried Poke had written on the menu board the word that all foodies despise, which was "OUT." To have flown 2000+ miles on the singular foodie mission to eat what was prominently featured on Netflix's food segment Street Foods and not be able to was disheartening. Anything else I ordered would be a consolation prize, but I decided to pick myself up and order two of the other items listed on their menu. You can select one item for $20 or pick any two items for $25. Trust me when I say to do the two items. For my combo, I chose for my first item Chopped Steak with caramelized onions and Hawaiian BBQ sauce and for my second item, I picked Peeled Garlic Butter Shrimp. Each combo plate comes with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad. I can't say how the pan fried poke would have tasted, but that steak was divine. The steak was ribeye and it was tender, melt in your mouth, and paired with onions and BBQ sauce just made for a foodie melody in my mouth. OMG, the garlic butter shrimp was amazingly scrumptious where the butter and garlic were aromatic and pronounced. That addictive butter and garlic sauce made the white rice heavenly and was just so flavorful with both proteins. The mac salad was creamy, tasty, and definitively the best mac salad EVER. My family and I were so blessed to have dined at Da Bald Guy's food truck location. 4.9 stars would have been a slam dunk 5 stars if Da Bald Guy was present to say Hi to customers who travelled thousands of miles to meet him and if I got to taste his famous Pan Fried Poke. Best beef I have ever tried! I'm so glad I made the drive from Waikiki just to try this. I went on a Thursday around 11am and there was no line, thankfully. I placed my order and within five minutes my order was ready. The pan seared poke was a bit dry in my opinion, but the sauce they add on top of it helped. The highlight of my combo plate was the beef, it was so tender and delicious. The macaroni salad was good as well. Outside the truck they have a couple picnic tables for seating, and across the parking lot there is a grassy area with seats as well. Omg this place is soooo good! It was a coin flip if I was gonna wait in the long line for Giovanni's shrimp truck or try something else. It was harder to find this truck because it's in the far back by a building and hard to see, but we looked for bright blue until we found this truck. The spot is about 8 minutes north of the Polynesian cultural center and perfect to grab for lunch before exploring. I got the kalibi beef and Cajun shrimp combo, and my friend got the braised short ribs. That Cajun shrimp was the best shrimp I've had. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. I like spicy, this was on the milder side, but packed with flavor. The Kalibi beef was so tender it was shreddable, but it was sweet like bbq sauce, which isn't my preference. The short ribs were also semi sweet, but soo tender. The Mac salad was the best I've had on the island. Id go back just for for a few scoops of that. Service was friendly and fast. The seating was still open, and it had some shade umbrellas over the table. Portions and prices were great. Four words: Pan Fried Poke Plate. That is ALL you need to know! The problem with finding a dish that I like is that it's difficult to try anything else on the menu. Every time I go to Oahu (which is about every other month now), I always drive to Kahuku so I can indulge on one of my favorite dishes on the island! The Pan Fried Poke Plate comes with cubed fresh fish, onions, furikake and their special sauce, which tastes like a teriyaki-aioli sauce. It's presented on a bed of white rice and it comes with a scoop of mac salad, which is also delicious, BTW! The truck is located on the side of the road at the Kahuku Sugar Mill. Just look for the turquoise-blue truck. They only have two round tables outside, so most people eat in their cars or take it to go. The staff are super friendly and yes, the owner is really bald! Their prices are very reasonable, and they take cash or credit card. I haven't tried any of their other menu items because I can't get myself to pass up the poke plate. It is THAT good! Saturday morning's traffic out to Kahuku was very light. My usual places were still closed. So I thought I'd try Da Bald Guy and their breakfast plates, but just missed it. I went with their fried poke plate with spicy drizzle. Buggah was ono! The 'ahi was fresh and the teriyaki and spicy mayo sauces were a good blend! The rice to poke ratio was spot on, the mac salad was good! Now I have another option to try when working out at Kahuku! read more

TL;DR definitely worth the drive for the food. After watching them on the great food truck race I've been waiting to eat here and it definitely was as good as I thought! I ordered a combo plate with the chipotle shrimp and the spicy furikake crusted salmon and both had a great spice level and an amazing sauce and seasonings. The Mac salad was very tasty and balanced out the heat in the food. We also got the kalbi which were in larger chunks and they were well marinated.
