We finally got to try Da Bald Guy yesterday--this has been on our list for years, but we always seemed to miss them since they close at 2 PM. When we arrived, it was almost closing and everything was sold out except for the spicy pan-fried ahi poke. That actually worked out perfectly because it was exactly what we had been wanting to try. Oh wow--it did not disappoint. The flavors were bold, savory, and had just the right amount of spice. We took our food over to Kahuku Beer Garden and enjoyed it with some beers, and it honestly hit differently in the best way. Definitely worth planning ahead for next time so we can try more from their menu.
My sister and I tried this food truck and got the 2 item combo. We had the boneless kalbi and the pan fried poke which i was kind of skeptical of the pan fried poke because I was scared the fish might be overcooked and the sauces will taste weird when it gets cooked but it was soooo delicious! The kalbi was so soft it literally melts and same as the pan fried poke. We shared the plate because it has really big portions but it came with Mac salad and rice as well. Service was fast and staff was friendly. They also have a couple benches for seating in front of their truck to eat. Couldn't forget about their kalbi of how soft and tender it was.
The peeled garlic butter shrimp ($20) from Da Bald Guy was one of the best bites I had during my recent trip to Honolulu. I love a good garlic shrimp, but I've only ever had it hot and thick on the sauce. At Da Bald Guy, such is not the case. For starters, the shrimp is peeled, leaving the actual shrimp itself to catch all the flavor. It's not heavily doused in sauce. Instead, the use of garlic butter is more intentional where you can taste the sweetness of the shrimp. Sensationally good. No notes. If you find yourself driving to the North Shore, do yourself a favor and stop by Da Bald Guys for their peeled garlic butter shrimp.
We just visited a tour from Kualoa Ranch and made a stop here as it was the midpoint to going to North Shore. It's located with a ton of other small trucks and eateries, so it's a nice pit stop just to wind down and relax! There's a convenient parking lot on the both sides of the whole area. When we visited around 1pm, it wasn't too crowded. More people waiting for their order and just 2 people ahead. The menu listed that they don't do combos anymore (sad!) and they ran out of galbi for the day. We really wanted to try the galbi! So we ordered the pan-fried poke, shrimp, and steak plates. It did take awhile for our order to be ready, since we were also killing time trying to find a table, find drinks nearby, etc. I mainly had the pan-fried poke which I do really enjoy the sauce, but I found it to be nothing too special. The idea of it sounds pretty neat, but I feel like the pan-fried poke was a bit too over done, it almost could have just been grilled fish at that point lol. The steak was pretty flavorful, and the shrimp had all the garlic bits that were pretty flavorful as well. The mac salad was also pretty nice, but pretty heavy and creamy. It is overall a heavy meal, which we all almost went into a food coma haha.
We got here at the start of lunch just after 11am. I don't think you can go wrong with Da Bald Guy anything. I was here before and had the kalbi beef. This time I wanted to try the garlic shrimp bc I've only heard good things. My niece and her boyfriend were visiting and I wanted them to experience this food truck. They ordered a combo plate with the garlic shrimp and steak. The food was delicious. They actually rated it the best meal that had while they were on the island. That should tell ya something. The shrimp were big and cooked perfectly. Seasoned to perfection. Just the right amount of garlic and the extra sauce made for the best rice. I was happy with the quantity of shrimp too. Definitely a worth it meal in my book. I also got a teriyaki spam musubi to try. Also good. I like how they wrapped it. Just a slight variation from the ones I typically eat. Will definitely be back. I still want to try the salmon. We got in line just at the right time bc when we turned to sit down after ordering there was a long line that had formed behind us. Our food got done quickly and we sat down at the picnic tables to enjoy it. It was busy so we shared a picnic table with another family. Hopefully you don't mind doing that bc space is often limited.
A must stop every time we visit Oahu! This time we were lucky to catch them twice at the pearlgate food truck event and at the usual spot in north shore. Only downfall of catching them at an event is the limited menu, which didn't have the Kalbi (our favorite), furikake crusted salmon (another fave) and the pan fried poke. We were in north shore and barely made the cut at 11am for the Kalbi and ordered the last 2 plates! Honestly everything is good, but my two favorites are the Kalbi & furikake crusted salmon. Both are always cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Until next time!
So I have my favorites when visiting Oahu, and this is a must for me!!! Furikake crusted Salmon and kabli plate is fire. Must get extra sauce (and I like extra spice on mine too). The fish is so crispy even though it's drenched in sauce. Seasoned well, cooked perfectly, never dry and that crusty skin is tasty! Kalbi is tender and flavorful, with large potions. The bf and I share a plate and it's plenty for both of us. Everything is made to order and fresh, and they are quick to get your food to you. Ever since their Netflix special they are so popular, they sell out of the fish every day so make sure to get there by noon. Friendly staff and always so nice too! There's plenty of outdoor bench seating or you can take your food to the indoor beer garden for some shade. Plenty of little shops around to get some kick knacks too.
I saw this place on TikTok and was trying the kahuku shrimp at all the viral places. This place was good. I ordered the shrimp peeled and I think I should have left it on. The ribs were fatty and hard to eat. They were very sweet but still good. The shrimp was good and the mac salad was the best thing on the plate. I would recommend to try at least once to knock them off the list. Grab a plate here and then walk to Giovanni's to see who has the better of the two.
This was an alright plate for me. I'm not the biggest fan of garlic shrimp so maybe I should've gotten something else. The shrimp was super buttery and heavy, not my vibe. The garlic was good though. Also shrimp to rice ratio was way too off for me, had me eating spoonfuls of straight rice. The Mac salad is absolutely Gods gift to this green earth. Idk what's the special sauce in it but man it's so good. Creamy but not too heavy. Super good.
Some of the best plate lunches on the island! I try to stop by whenever they're at the What the Truck events at Waikele and Millilani. Service is usually quick but get there when they open to avoid lines. Must orders include the super tender Braised Boneless Kal Bi and the creamy and spicy Pan Fried Poke. Definitely follow them on Instagram to stay up to date on their monthly pop-ups.
This year, my new foodie friends and I planned to start our island food tour here. The area has changed so much! There used to be just a market, and maybe one or two trucks and/or food shops to choose from. Now it's a mecca of food trucks, so there's a lot to choose from. Luckily, we were early, found parking and were able to order. We shared the kalbi and the shrimp. Both come with rice and one scoop mac salad. The kalbi was so tender! The shrimp were buttery and full of garlic flavor! We didn't eat all our rice because we were planning to eat throughout the day. Staff was very friendly! Lots of people coming up to get lunch. Not sure if Da Bald guy was working, but it was all so good! Mahalo Bald Guy!

Yum! My husband and I are big fans of The Great Food Truck Race so when we found out where the truck was while on a tour in Oahu, we had to make a point to come back to try it out! So glad we did. I ordered the butter garlic shrimp and my husband ordered the braised beef. Both of our meals were delicious, and they give you so much food! Both of ours were good for two meals. My husband said the beef just melted in your mouth, so I had to try it out and totally agreed. The butter garlic shrimp was so well seasoned. Nice truck, good selection of options. Friendly staff. The only thing we were disappointed about was that he wasn't actually there when we went--but that's ok! We just wanted to see him in the flesh after watching the show. Highly recommend. read more

We finally had a chance to try the bald guy on the North Shore of Oahu on 6/17/25. We ordered the peeled garlic butter, shrimp, and boneless short rib plates. We enjoyed the peeled shrimp but prefer the shrimp with the skin. we thought the flavor was good, but it tasted more like Cajun shrimp rather than the original garlic butter, shrimp that were used to. The service was good. Their staff was friendly. The food came out quick, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly and the short rib was delicious. They provided some tables for those who want to enjoy their meal on site. They are located in Kahuku where all the food trucks are. Definitely worth the try and if you're in the area, definitely worth stopping by and trying their delicious food if you like your shrimp peeled, then this place is definitely for you. We made the trip out to north shore just to try the food trucks and we were very curious about this place! We were craving garlic shrimp and I'm happy to report that the two shrimp options on the menu was perfect for our group of 4 to share! Me and my husband got the spicy Cajun garlic shrimp and it was so delicious, I could eat the garlic sauce with just the rice by itself! I thought the portions were big but the amount of rice they provide is on the heavier side I must say. If you're in the area, def take some time to explore the other trucks and vendors out that area as well! We would definitely be back. read more

I picked up some garlic shrimp from Da Bald Guy's stand at the SALT night market and was underwhelmed. The shrimp was very salty and not as flavorful as some of the other locations I got garlic shrimp while in Hawaii. Not sure if maybe they are better on their actual food truck than at the night market stand as the night market stand seemed to be very chaotic with a long line but this particular time I tried it was not great. Would be open to trying from their actual truck in the future. read more
MUST TRY WHEN YOURE IN NORTH SHORE AREA. The kalbi was sooooo good and tender!!!! I'm not a big fan of fried poke so it wasn't as great as I've read. We honestly can't wait to come back to get more! Got here at 12:30pm, the fresh catch furikake was sold out, the boneless kalbi was sold out. Got the furikake salmon & chopped steak. It's ok, just like any other plate lunch, nothing to write home about, or the hype. The server was ok, not spectacular in friendliness. read more

I saw a video review of this place on social media so since we were out that side, I decided to try it. Never trust one persons review cause we all have different tastes. The service was good, friendly workers and it was pretty fast to get my food. It was a bit crowded. It's a food truck with about 3 bench seatings which were all taken so we sat elsewhere. I got a combo which was two choices for $35!!! Ok I'll pay the $35 to try this place but was it worth it??? Not to me, sorry! I got the short ribs with garlic shrimp. The plus to this is that the shrimp is already peeled. When I think of short ribs, I always think kalbi but it wasn't that style. Ok fine and the meat was pretty tender, no knife needed. I took a taste and it was sweet. I don't like my beef on the sweet side, I like it flavorful but on the salty side. The sauce/marinade they used would be good for chicken tho. The shrimp was sweet too and a little garlicky but I like mines with choke garlic. Overall I didn't care for the food cause it was too sweet and it's not your Kahuku shrimp. If I ever go back to this place I'm going to try the steak. Maybe breakfast items are good cause most is just cook and serve, nothing really to season. Not someplace I would recommend but I'll suggest it as a place to try with a warning of price and the sweetness. read more
We came at 11a on a Tuesday morning and was taken care of immediately. Food came quick, but immediately following was a crowd -- come early! We got the boneless beef kalbi and the pan fried poke for 3 people. It was awesome, we loooved the boneless kalbi! It was so tender and had an amazing flavor. I don't always like kalbi because it's usually too salty or sweet, but this was perfect. The pan fried poke was good too, definitely a unique concept. We got the garlic shrimp at the Ono grindz market. It was also yummy, there were 12 shrimps in there! Maybe they were busy, but I felt like my shrimps weren't seasoned enough either salt. I've had this only once and I'm so happy I went back. ITS SO GOOD! The beef is so tender and flavorful. I love the Mac salad as well. The lady taking my order was so nice, the parking wasn't horrible, but it was also a weekday. For the weekend, keep in mind that it won't be easy to find seating or parking. The seating was really limited. The plate was $20 but well worth it. With the amount they give you too. Fun fact: this food truck was on shows Great Food Truck Race and Street Food USA! Da Bald Guy has been on my foodie bucket list since watching the Netflix show Street Food USA in 2022. I knew one day I would be traveling to Hawaii and three years later, I was excited to drive the hour and 20 minute drive from Waikīkī to the North Shore. It was a beautiful scenic drive with the ocean and mountains along the way. When I arrived, there wasn't a line and I was greeted by the staff who was friendly and warm. I ordered the pan-fried poke which is seared tuna with onions and drizzled with poke sauce. It came on top a bed of rice and a side of macaroni salad. The fish was very good, light and hit the spot after a long drive. The salad was creamy with a hint of vinegar. There are several outdoor tables with umbrellas. Overall, it was a worthwhile foodie trip. read more

Best poke I've had in Hawaii (3rd trip for a foodie). Poke is fresh and perfect. The sear is just right. Huge portions. The combination of spicy Mayo/teriyaki is so good! The Mac salad is delicious too. Tables to eat and friendly food truck service. I'd give it a six if I could. We arrived by 9:15 and 2 dishes were already sold out. Come early! read more

It was a gorgeous Sunday so my daughters and I made the long drive from town to Kahuku to try out Da Bald Guy. This food truck that's making Pipeline-sized waves in the foodie ocean. The hype is REAL! The four of us got 2 shrimp plates and 2 kalbi plates. Food looked and smelled amazing! Major kudos for texture and taste. The boneless kalbi and shelled shrimp were cooked to perfection. Already planning another trek out there during fall break next week, even if I have to go by myself. If the drive weren't so long I would have given 5 stars for sure. read more
We went here because Giovanni's was closed and we heard it was famous due to the Netflix feature. There was quite a few ppl standing around waiting for their orders. It took us about 10-15 mins to get our food after ordering. This plate was more expensive than the one we got from Jenny's shrimp truck. I wouldn't say it was better, but it was pretty good on its own. They have a condiments section for you to add some sauces. We opted for some siracha because why not. Overall the meal was good and shareable. I don't think I would wait if the line was long tho. read more
We built this stop into our North Shore itinerary. After seeing this spot on Neflix, Street Food USA, and The Great Food Truck Race, we became huge fans. Located in the parking lot of the kahuku Sugar Mill, you'll find the Da Bald Guy food truck open from 6am-2pm. Check online for daily posted hours. After spending some time at the beach, we headed over and arrived around 1:15pm. Unfortunately, a little too late, the entire menu was sold out except the pan-fried Ahi Poke. We decided to share the dish, which was plenty for the two of us. The cooked Poke is topped with aioli, teriyaki sauce, and furikaki. You'll find caramelized onions throughout the Poke, which is served on a bed of white rice with a side of mac salad. The dish was delicious, and we loved that the owner of the truck, James, was inside cooking as well. Loved the food and that James, AKA, Da Bald Guy took a photo with us! read more

Not gunna lie, I'm basically a big fan girl for Da Bald Guy. From the Netflix series to the Food Network Truck Race. I have always wanted to try this place. And I'm so happy to report that this place does not disappoint! We came here twice during our stay in the North Shore area. There is a reason why this place opens early.... their breakfast! Come here early to avoid all the food being "sold out," which does happen quite often! Service is fast and staff were super friendly. From the two times that we were here we got: - Boneless Kalbi Beef: The beef was so flavorful, savory, sweet, and tender. The portion was also very generous! - Chipotle Cajun Butter Shrimp: It was one of our favorite shrimps in North Shore. It really does have a kick to it! - Teriyaki Spam Musubi: Can't mess this up. Proportions of the rice and spam was good and perfect after the beach. - Coffee: Was very satisfying in the morning and strong! - Breakfast Sandwich: It was sold out the first time we came so we stopped by before we left North Shore. The bread was so soft and yummy, which soaked up all the other flavors. I am forever grateful that I was able to experience this place at least once in my lifetime :) read more
On a trip to the North Shore, we went the back route on the windward side of the island and stopped at Da Bald Guy to get lunch first. It is located at the Kahuku Sugar Mill, the site of an old plantation, which is now basically a little development with shops and restaurants. Da Bald Guy is a food truck that has been featured on Diners, Driveins and Dives. We shared 2 dishes, the Grilled Garlic Shrimp and the Furikake Crusted King Salmon. Of the 2, I preferred the garlic shrimp because it was like the famous garlic shrimp from all the food trucks with an added perk, no shells and no dirty hands! The Furikake Salmon was good too, but very rich with the fatty fish and the generous spicy mayo saucing. I would have ordered the version with Furikake Tuna is it were available that day and I think that would have been a superior version. read more

I saw this place all over social media and on the must eat list in the north shore so I went to check it out. I got an order of the Cajun shrimp and felt like it was super underwhelming. The rice was kinda hard and not fluffy- it tasted like rice made over the stove top. The shrimp was ok. The flavor didn't blow me away and it was just alright. It's definitely not a must stop place up on the north shore. Maybe I got the wrong item because the short ribs looked really good too. Maybe go with that item instead. read more

OMG! the boneless kalbi... DUDE!!! that shit got me fucked up. ALSO, their garlic butter shrimp can take Giovanni's shrimp ANY DAY! I really wanted to try the crusted salmon but when we got there it was all gone for the day D; I will def try that one next time we come. The place has other food trucks nearby and some local boutiques and shops also have an actual restroom which was a plus! The kalbi was so good, it was braised, soft, and flavorful, I loved the garlic buttered shrimp too! the garlic paste they use is something I've never had before Because it wasn't one of those overly garlicky garlic sauces. this was perfectly garlicky without having to worry about smelling or burping garlic all day LOL. We got our food pretty fast and we ate in the trunk of our jeep and just vibed. read more

We recently toured Oahu and took the drive up to the North Shore for the day. We stopped in Kahuku at the food truck area after reading reviews of the Da Bald Guy, we chose to order lunch there instead of the famed Giovanni's shrimp truck. My husband and I split an order of Kalbi short ribs and garlic shrimp. The short ribs were marinated in a Korean barbecue sauce and so tender! Like, fall apart, tender! The garlic shrimp were big with lots of garlic, served over rice and a macaroni salad on the side. I don't really care much about macaroni salad, but I took a few bites and it tasted good. The star of the show was the short ribs and garlic shrimp! We shared a plate of it and we were both stuffed! The portions were huge! I do understand that most people want the tradition of stopping at the other shrimp truck, but I have to say if I have the opportunity to go back again I would definitely go back to Da Bald Guy for the same delicious experience. It was a great stop in general, with several other shops, I think there was a place called seven brothers, or something like that. There was also a beer garden, and several other food trucks to choose from. The place was very busy and there was some shaded areas to sit and eat before we went on our way again. Yall, get the beef. It's so tender and flavorful. I'm so glad is tumbled upon this place! There portions are huge, enough to share. Flavor is on point. I still think about the meals that we ordered here. The service was quick and efficient. Had the meal on the lawn which made it a perfect evening basking in the Hawaiian sun! If you are trying to find the best Kalbi on the island look no further! The boneless kalbi here is the perfect balance between the traditional grilled kalbi and the braised kalbi jim. Its firm enough to have some bite but super tender from being braised. Their mac salad is also super unique and has a tint hint of spice. Make sure to get here early because they regularly sell out prior to closing! read more

I am a big fan of the pan fried poke w spicy sauce. My husband love the tenderness of the kalbi. The portions are huge. My combo plate was easily split between myself and my 2 keiki. To me, the only thing missing was a side mixed greens option. read more

I saw Da Bald Guy featured on the Street Food Netflix series and of course had to pay James a visit! We have been to Hawaii several times now and decided to stay on the North Shore of Oahu for this trip, conveniently located only a few minutes away from the food truck scene. I ventured out very early in the morning on Labor Day (also severely jetlagged) to get some breakfast and thankfully James' food truck was open! He was a super nice guy and the food he cooked up was delicious. There are several options for breakfast and at only $5 p/plate, felt like a steal. High quality food from a great spot on the North Shore, awesome start to our trip. Can't wait to return to try some o fhis other menu items, highly recommended!! Best, Charlie read more
*This review is based on my visit at What The Truck in Waikele* I saw Da Bald Guy at What The Truck in Waikele for their food truck event. I watched them on the Netflix show and super excited to try their food. We choose the pan fried poke plate, it comes with rice and mac salad - no substitutes. Damn, the pan fried poke was perfect, nice and tender. My mom and I shared a plate and it was just silence when we were eating. It was that good. We cleaned up the plate too!!! I got to see James, who is the owner but I didn't get to really say hi and talk to him... so I definitely want to visit him in Kahuku one day! :) read more

The garlic butter shrimp from this food truck is absolutely worth seeking out. The shrimp is tender, flavorful, and perfectly smoky with a bold garlicky finish that soaks right into the rice underneath. It's one of those meals where every bite hits just right. The mac salad is a standout--creamy, well-seasoned, and probably one of the best versions out there. Portions are generous and everything tasted incredibly fresh. It's clear they put care into both preparation and quality. There's limited seating outside, so it's more of a grab-and-go or eat-on-the-spot kind of setup, but for food this good, it's worth it. read more

Da Bald Guy knows what he's doing! Got there with an hour left till closing and unfortunately/ fortunately was unable to get the Beef Short Ribs. BUTTTT did get the Peeled Garlic Butter Shrimp! And it was DELICIOUS AND AMAZING AND MOUTHWATERING. Finding the garlic bits in every bite was the cherry on top. Plus it's in a parking lot full of other food trucks with more than enough areas to sit and enjoy your food if you please. The drive through north shore made everything that much better. Definitely a must go again spot! But get there earlier if possible. read more
