I live nearby and I went to this place about a month ago. I went with my wife and two young kids.
I was anticipating something good because I had been to the old restaurant they had near the seaport, which was pretty good. That place was closed due to Hurricane Sandy.
First of all, there was a prix-fixe menu in the window for the time period we went, but we were not given the prix-fixe menu. I had to ask for it, and there appeared to be some discussion and finally they rather reluctantly brought the prix-fixe menu.
We ordered a couple of the speciality cocktails, and a beer.
I ordered a soft shell crab appetizer. Then we ordered two prix-fixe dinners. One pasta vongole and one meat lasagna. I ordered some plain pasta with tomato sauce for the kids. They are picky eaters.
The drinks were good, nicely mixed fruity cocktails, albeit a little light on the alcohol. OK, no big deal.
Then the soft shell appetizer came. $20. One miserable tiny little soft shell crab. I figured there would be at least a couple of crabs for twenty bucks to share with the wife, but no, ONE tiny little crab. Not even a good crab.
The main dishes came, lasagna and pasta vongole. I took one forkfull of the pasta and it was awful. Very salty and an extremely chintzy portion of clams. Basically inedible. Let me repeat, salty to the point of inedibility.
The lasagna was not much better. Mostly noodle, very little meat, some sort of ersatz Béchamel and almost no cheese. Really a poor version of lasagna and not at all anything special. I wondered if the two bad dishes were punishment for ordering off the prix-fixe menu.
Now before I continue this review, I suggest you look at my other reviews. I am a world traveller, I eat EVERYTHING all over the world, I'm a pretty fair cook, and I know my food. Even in Italy.
The owner eventually came over to our table and asked how we liked the food. I could not refrain from saying "ehhh". I was sorry to say so, I really don't like to complain in a restaurant, it is not my style. But this time everything was really crap.
He was very apologetic, and said we should have told him if we didn't like the food. So I told him.
First of all, I said "I think one small soft shell crab for $20 is outrageous."
He shrugged and said "Well, that's the market price." and that was that. Yeah right, Just that morning in Chinatown I saw 12 soft shell crabs for sale for $11.99 and in the Grand Central food market, which is very expensive, they were selling 12 soft shells for $20. OK, so I got rooked.
Then I told him I thought the pasta vongole was too salty and basically inedible. He went into the kitchen, presumably to taste some other dish of pasta, and returned to tell me that "the pasta was perfect".
"You just can't eat spicy food" he said.
I can't eat spicy food?? I'm not a vulgarian or a peasant or an idiot. (at least I hope not) I have eaten food spicy enough to kill Anthony Bourdain.
That pasta was vile. Salty, inedible. Nothing to do with the "spices" and not "spicy" at all. Disgusting is what it was.
They tried to make amends by giving us a free dessert of some sort of ricotta cake, which was not too great either. But I was done complaining, no point in making a scene. My wife corroborated everything I have mentioned, and she also knows the difference between good and bad food.
The whole experience, for a couple of dinky plates of really bad food and ONE SOFT SHELL CRAB FOR TWENTY BUCKS cost me North of $160. (I expected them to take at least the pasta vongole off the bill, but they did not, even though I told them I hated it and didn't eat most of it.) I don't mind paying a couple of hundred bucks for a good meal, but jeez, this was like a couple of skimpy ill-conceived school cafeteria plates.
I left feeling gypped. I will not rush back. I will not even slowly go back.
I don't know what sort of morons are leaving this place 5 stars but maybe they have entered some quantum singularity and eaten in a different place in a different dimension. Or maybe they are just tasteless idiots. Probably idiots. The same sort of people who leave bad reviews at great Chinatown restaurants because they can't get "General Tso's Chicken" and they don't know what they're eating.
If you come here, good luck and bring your wallet.
PS: There are an astonishing number of fake shill "reviews" for this restaurant. Or "amazing" reviews from gullible hicks not from NYC. Take a look at where they're all from. I'm sure all the yokels who love the food here also rate "Olive Garden" very highly too.
Do you want to know how to tell fake reviews that come from some "good review" mill in the third world? Look at people who have only reviewed a few places but left 5 stars. Their reviews are all over the place. One in California, one in NYC, one in Timbuktu. They are being paid for their reviews, they have never been there. A "review farm". Look at all the hidden reviews here that Yelp flagged. Tip of the iceberg. read more
