Initially my reservation was for 2 people but my guest couldn't made it, and the staff were so accommodating in letting me have a table outside as a solo guest since it seems they usually seat parties of 1 at the bar. Service was great and super fast. The bread basket was filled with a nice fresh sesame seed-coated bread, and I enjoyed that to start. The star is definitely their off menu vodka chicken parm, which lived up to all the hype! The chicken is pounded extremely thin and gets nice and crispy, with a generous coating of cheese and vodka sauce that gets topped with penne alla vodka! It's decadent and was a really memorable dish. It wasn't super crowded on a weeknight but they do take reservations in advance which is helpful. A vendor I work with was in town and trying to find a restaurant for our business dinner. After consulting a few of his New York friends, he offered Osteria Nonnino to me as an option. The cute Italian restaurant owned by a talented couple had been on my list to try for quite some time, so I immediately agreed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As I walked up the quiet stretch of Hudson Street, I managed to spot my colleagues sitting at a table on the sidewalk amongst an already packed sea of taken streetary tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I grabbed a seat to join them and heard that they were able to move their reservation outdoors to snag the last open spot on that beautiful evening. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They also noted that the indoor dining room was full, so, clearly, this was a beloved destination.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While we discussed the menu, our friendly server dropped off a basket that had a few slices each of sesame-topped white and semolina breads with a small bowl of herb-infused olive oil. The bread was enjoyable, but sliced a little too thin on which to put a generous amount of zesty oil. We decided to share the Melanzane al Forno appetizer, which was baked eggplant with parmigiana and mozzarella cheeses and a light pomodoro sauce. For some reason, the dish was a little cold in temperature but was fantastic otherwise. The sauce was sweet and rich, and the mozzarella had the slightest hint of salt to make it more flavorful. We then each got an entree, and I heard rave reviews for the Pappardelle Bolognese and the personal Margherita Pizza. I had been so tempted to try their homemade pasta, but was going to a food event the following evening, so I wanted something lighter. I opted for the Branzino alla Griglia, which was a whole grilled filet of Mediterranean sea bass served over broccoli rabe. I had been worried that the fish would have been too plain, but it had been lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The tender branzino was delicious, as was the included crisp broccoli. We were looking forward to trying a new Italian spot in the West Village that you can actually get a reservation at, but the experience just fell flat for me. They offer a table side tiramisu and cacio e pepe, both of which we were not able to see since the tables were so packed together that they could not bring the cart to us. In my personal opinion, the "table side" concept is a bit of a gimmick to be able to up charge more for the experience. This place is very small and very popular so make reservations! Delicious and great service! Servings are large but we are staying at a hotel with no microwave so we tried our best to eat it all. We had one of the specials which was chicken parm. My daughter was astounded when it came out and it filled the plate! I had the Tortellini Di Casa and my other daughter had the Rigatoni Di Nonnino. All were delish! I had to try dessert which was the Setteveli and was not disappointed. Each of us split it. One word of caution in the winter. If you think you will come to happy hour before your reservation you cannot sit at the bar, therefore there is no happy hour. I really don't get all of the good reviews. The food at this place is mediocre at best, prices are too high for what you're getting and service is unfriendly, albeit efficient. We started off with the Cacio a Pepe as an app. It was so oversalted as to be almost inedible. For my main, I got a margarita pizza. In NYC, there is no excuse for a pizza like this -- bland crust and tasteless sauce. It was maybe a half-step above a frozen supermarket pizza. My wife and I came here to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. We couldn't wait after seeing the raving reviews on Yelp and TikTok. We were so excited for the cacio e Pepe and tiramisu to be prepared in front of us, but because we sat outside this wasn't an option, which we were not aware of, so that was a bummer. We shared the polenta e salsiccia, cacio e pepe, and oreccheitte con bufala. The polenta was delicious. However, the cacio e Pepe and oreccheitte were not good at all. We kept checking the sign to make sure we had come to the right restaurant. We got the pastas wrapped up hoping it'd taste better as leftovers but didn't even like the taste a little to even give it a try. We both tried espresso martinis and sent them back, which we never do. They didn't taste like espresso at all and whatever vodka was used was extremely strong and not smooth. I really wanted to like this place. Had an 8pm reservation, checked in at 8:04 and was told they're checking on my table and to wait a few minutes. After 30 minutes I went back up to the hostess to check on the status and she told us she "overlooked" our reservation and to wait a bit longer. 10 minutes later I checked back in again and she said she can't seat us at the bar until she found us a table in 15 minutes. That was unacceptable to me and I had to point out an empty table to her where we could sit. She apologized and gave us a free glass of champagne and sat us at that table. We ordered our entrees and drinks, the entrees came out before the drinks and the drinks didn't come out until after we were finished with our entrees. Crispy and flaky breading with a moist and succulent chicken inside - INCREDIBLE! Sauce on the chicken parm... muted to the point of being indescribable, just there. Arancini- delicious, delicate and savory! The food IMHO in terms of flavor, flat for my palate. Felt very Calabrian in terms of flavor profile. None of the sauce added anything to the dishes for me. Shocking since everything else was fabulous. Still a strong recommendation here but I would ask for a the addition or substitution of a sauces which had more to offer. My experience at Osteria Nonnino was disappointing. Initially, everything seemed fine. We were seated, given water and bread, and our server, Massimo, took our order. My girlfriend and I ordered the Cacio e Pepe, Pesto Gnocchi, and a Margherita pizza. After waiting about 30 minutes with no food, Massimo returned and asked us what we had ordered again, which was surprising considering how long we had already been waiting. About 10 minutes later, the food finally arrived. The Cacio e Pepe was unfortunately far too salty, though I will say the Pesto Gnocchi was delicious and easily the best part of the meal. However, our Margherita pizza never arrived. When we asked about it, Massimo went to check with the kitchen, but after waiting even longer, we decided to forget about the pizza altogether. To make matters worse, when it came time to pay, Massimo skipped the tipping screen entirely and went straight to processing the payment, which felt odd given the experience we had just had. Between the long wait, forgotten order items, lack of attention to detail, and overall service issues, this was not the experience we expected. I think we lucked out because it filled up pretty soon after, it's a small restaurant. We had the cacio e pepe and paccheri di Nonnino. The cacio e pepe is prepared in kitchen and put in the cheese wheel tableside for a bit more cheesiness with more grated cheese on top. The paccheri di Nonnino with crumbled sausage and spicy vodka sauce was the unanimous favorite. Going to recommend that to everyone. And the tiramisu made tableside.
