came here for brunch on a saturday and was very impressed by the meal and attentiveness of the staff here at genki kitchen! for a late saturday morning, my party and i were surprisingly seated right away. we were initially asked if we would be able to sit at the bar but when a table became vacant around our arrival the kind staff immediately cleaned it up for us to use. there is so much on the menu that i will definitely be back to try. for this moment, we had ordered the unagi skillet, country fried katsu, and genki benedict. in this review, i'll solely be speaking about the unagi skillet as that's the meal i ordered. before getting into the great flavor profile of the dish, we did wait about 20 minutes for our dishes to come out. personally, i didn't find it to be too much of an issue, however, the staff came to the table apologizing about the wait time and reassured that our food would come out shortly. a gesture that i greatly appreciated and made the experience here feel hospitable. the unagi skillet was tasty; it included veggies, rice, a tornado egg, and the main star... the unagi. jam packed w flavors that complemented each other i highly recommend others to try this dish out!

We came here for brunch around 11am, Saturday and it was packed already. We waited for about 5 mins for our table. The waiter came and took our drink orders and once he brought that, another person promptly came to take our order. It took a long time for us to receive our food, approx. an hour! We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. The best part of our meal was the geso (squid legs). The vegetable tempura wasn't that good and it did not come with tempura sauce. It tasted like soy sauce! The French toast was something less to be desired. The French toast I make at home tastes better. We also got the loco moco and it was very bland. Unfortunately we probably won't come back.

Oh so delicious! Family run business. We came on a weekend so their young son adorably and efficiently did the hosting duties seating guests. We ordered the Genki poutine, unagi skillet, and Genki Benedict. Everything was fantastic .. a bit of Japanese/Hawaiian fusion that was wonderfully flavored with generous portions. The house drip coffee actually had flavor! Hoorah!! We got the poutine with curry and it was the perfect combination of savory goodness. The unagi had several large pieces of unagi, sauce, fluffy tornado egg and rice. The Genki Benedict came with spam which I worried about being too salty was it was a well balanced dish. We cleaned all the plates! Service was quick and efficient. The staff is friendly and attentive. I loved this place and you will too! This spot is tucked away in a little strip mall with its own parking lot. We arrived around 9:30 ish and it was not problem finding a place to park. Let's keep this place in business for years to come

Came here with a group of 4 people on a Saturday morning. It's a small restaurant so there was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too long, about 15-20 minutes. The place is very cutely decorated inside. Trendy and vibrant but not overly stimulating. They offered everybody complementary tea or coffee. Must be a promotion they are running. The coffee was very good. Rich and bold. I'm a bit of a coffee snob and their coffee passed the test for restaurant coffee. They had oatmilk creamer which is kind of rare for a place that does not specialize in coffee. I was very impressed with that option. The food took awhile to come out. No big deal since I was happily sipping coffee and chatting but I could see some people were getting a bit impatient nearby. The Loco Moco was HUGE! My friend can eat but he couldn't finish it and had to take some home. I took a bite and it was very authentic. Came with two types of gravy, country and traditional. Beef patty was well seasoned and moist. The Unagi rice/egg dish was very satisfying. The egg was fluffy and the unagi was what I expected. I had this very similar dish at another local asian fusion breakfast restaurant in Sac and the other place was just a tad bit better. A dallop of roe would have brighten the dish up. The French Toast was just okay. Nothing to write home about. A dusting of powdered sugar would have made the dish more appealing to the eye. It was decent but pretty standard. Service was very friendly and attentive. Staff came by multiple times to check on us and refill our beverages.

4.5 stars A true family run business with the kids helping out. Service could be a bit slow, so they should consider hiring more people. - Okonomiyaki: unique item that got good reviews by others so I decided to try it. Not like any okonomiyaki I've had before (from Japan or here in cali). There's no protein in it, just the bacon on the side, which wasn't enough. It's just cabbage and too much batter. Very one-noted and on the bland side. - omlette, the meat one lol. Sorry i forgot the name but it had lots of meat. Egg was too thin though. Overall, I thought the items were a tad expensive but love the unique options. I would come back to try something else.

Was recommended this spot by a friend! Located in the parking lot with the antique mall. Family owned, everyone was friendly and helpful. Love that they offer complimentary green tea or coffee! We ordered the Genki Loco Moco and the Chicken Katsu and Waffle. Both were so good, would definitely recommend. Their Loco Moco came with a tornado egg and two different gravy's - a brown and a white gravy. I found pieces of bacon with my rice too! Presentation was great! The katsu chicken and waffle came with a side of freshly whipped cream and fresh fruit. The katsu came out perfectly crispy and the coconut waffle was fluffy and not too sweet. Huge portions! They even helped pack up our leftovers. Will def be back :)

Teriyaki bowl & chicken katsu with country gravy on the side

Staff was very friendly and welcoming, server was so sweet and attentive! We ordered the teriyaki bowl, and it was really good! Flavor was there, would recommend to ask for teriyaki sauce on the side - it got a bit soggy and was a little too much. Overall the smokiness from the chicken was good! The chicken katsu with the country gravy was really good, chicken was juicy. Big portion sizes! Would come here again

I adore this place, and it's a whole family affair. The older kids were earning there keep and seating the guest which I LOVE and the food was all amazing and unique. Service was great and the space was nice and open. The loco moco had a fusion of gravy's that paired nicely and was yummy. Everything was delicious and can't wait to come back to try everything on the menu. Definitely stop in for a creative brunch option

Genki is now my favorite lunch spot in Sacramento! Came on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy. Luckily, I was able to secure two seats at the bar. It's a family run restaurant, and everyone is so nice. We got the Genki Loco Moco and Salmon Teriyaki Skillet. They were absolutely delicious and the portions are big! I wish the rice itself had a little seasoning, but other than that I enjoyed all the texture and flavors coming together.

Food was all fantastic and service was absolutely wonderful. Everything we ordered was great, portions were big and you won't leave hungry. So happy to have found this place, will definitely be back! Our son instantly connected with the owners son who was so kind, helped with seating guests, refilled water glasses and so personable. The owners son is really into Pokemon cards so it was great to hear him talk about it and teach my son some tips about them.

Hidden gem in East Sacramento! Love the hospitality at this restaurant. The food came out fast and was delicious it really made me miss Japan that much more. Everything was very flavorful I definitely want to come back and try their French toast!

The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant! We ordered the French toast topped with fresh whipped cream, and it was soft, fluffy, and perfectly sweet. The fried chicken and waffles were equally impressive. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, while the waffle had the perfect balance of crispiness on the outside and fluffiness on the inside. We also tried the loco moco, which was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The sauces complemented the dish perfectly and really brought everything together. Every item we ordered exceeded our expectations, and I would happily order all of them again. Highly recommended!

Genki Kitchen is located where Evan's and Kau Kau used to be. Lots of parking there but it usually gets full around lunch time. Lunch time the place gets busy too but after around 1:30 there's less of a wait time to sit down. My wife and I just happened to look for brunch places since we wanted to try new places and saw Genki took over the spot. It looked like it'll have a unique brunch menu so we had to check out. On our first visit we ordered 3 different items that sounded good on the menu because it's either we like the food and come back or we don't if what we got was not good. We ordered the Genki Benedict, Genki Loco Moco and the Country Fried Katsu on our first visit. The Benedict was absolutely delicious with the yuzu sauce and spam. The Shoku pan under all of that just elevated it and it was one of our favorites. The Loco Moco had two gravies that were white and brown with a perfectly cooked patty that wasn't mushy and had good texture. I got the sunny side egg on top of that. The country fried katsu had great texture with the gravy that was great as well. On our second visit we got the loco Moco again but with a tornado egg to switch it up and it'll be hard to choose between that and the sunny side next time I come. Next the GyuDon my son got and he said was great but I didn't get to try it since he finished it before I could get a bite . Also got the Curry Katsu Chicken Don and server let me know I had the option to do gravy instead so my big back went with the gravy and I'd do it again. Overall 9.5 out of 10 and we will come back here often. I believe Dan the owner talked to us on the second visit and he seemed like a great guy.

The happy hour prices were reasonable and had so many great options. Can't say for certain about the parking situation because it was a close walk from our hotel. We ordered 2 mocktails, the watermelon sugar and basil berry fizz. Both drinks were super sugary and tart, which I ended up diluting with water. Still refreshing and tasty, but I think it was a bit overkill on sugar. For our mains, we tried the rigatoni bolognese, trio of fries, and chicken tenders. All food and drinks for under $50! The portions were massive, especially the trio of fries, which I was not expecting. The sweet potato fries were a bit soggy compared to the other 2, which were significantly crispier. The chicken tenders were ok and probably the least exciting thing we ordered haha. On the other hand, the bolognese was by far the standout! Flavorful, rich, creamy and the cheese pull from the pasta was to die for. Our server was super cool and patient with us, as it was our first time coming here. Totally recommend checking this place out with a group of friends to enjoy happy hour.

They had some unique syrups, such as bourbon caramel and praline. The syrups were on the more subtle side, which some people prefer. I am not one of those people, but it was a good latte for a breakfast/ brunch spot. I wish there was more ice tho.  The skillet cornbread with sharp cheddar, creamed corn & garlic, honey butter & house made seasonal jam on the side was a great starter dish. I enjoyed the garlic and cheese. The temperature/ toastiness of this was yummy.  We couldn't decide between the cornbread and the sticky bun, so the only obvious solution was to order both. The topping of the sticky bun was delicious. It was almost pecan pie adjacent.

The entire reason people order ahead is so the drinks are ready when they arrive. Instead, my order was apparently ignored while I stood there waiting with no communication whatsoever. As someone who grew up enjoying Southern comfort food, I can honestly say these are some of the best beignets you'll find in the Sacramento area. They're huge, light, fluffy, served warm, and covered in the perfect amount of powdered sugar. They're always fresh, and every bite reminds me why I keep coming back. My daughter absolutely loves them too! She goes back and forth between these and Huckleberry's, but for me, Iron Horse Tavern takes the win. This time we ordered through DoorDash, along with a side of chicken, a bag of fries, and--if you know, you know--TWO sides of their amazing Sriracha cream cheese. Trust me... one isn't enough! Food: Outstanding. The beignets were the highlight, but everything was fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. It's nice finding a restaurant that consistently delivers quality whether you're dining in or ordering takeout. Service: Everything arrived perfectly packaged, neatly organized, and exactly as ordered. Nothing was forgotten, nothing spilled, and I even loved the thoughtful touch of the bag being labeled with my name. Little details like that make a difference. Ambiance: I've dined inside several times, and Iron Horse Tavern has one of my favorite atmospheres in Sacramento. Located in the historic R Street District, the restaurant blends modern industrial style with warm, inviting décor that pays tribute to the area's railroad history. Whether you're stopping in for brunch, dinner, or cocktails, it's a place that's lively without feeling overwhelming. If you've never tried the beignets here, you're missing out. Sacramento doesn't have many places serving authentic-style beignets, and Iron Horse Tavern has definitely earned a spot at the top of my list. I'll absolutely be back... probably sooner than I should!
