Great spot! Great food! Very friendly staffs. There is a roofed area with tables, and a small area to park. Purchased BBQ chicken and Da Mauka & Makai. Portion is large and delicious!

The meat jun was something I can never find on the mainland, until now! Too bad I like 3 hours away (that won't stop me from visiting). The service is quick and if you want to make sure they have what you want, I suggest you get there towards the opening hours. The first day we went was during the last two hours of open and they sold out of meat Jun and their spam + egg musubis, but the next day we got there at open and they had it all! I had ordered and paid before I was told that it was going to be a half hour wait. We were the only customers there, but apparently they had phoned-in orders backed up. I was with a friend, and my food was ready way before his was. I had the pork char siu plate. I actually really like plain rice, but this rice tasted like nothing, and the mac salad was literally the blandest mac salad I've ever had in my life. The reason I gave it three stars despite all this is that the pork itself was just marvelous. It was moist and flavorful with the perfect amount of char. The rice and mac salad come with it, but if I ever go again, I'll just tell them to keep those and just give me the pork.

I ordered Hawaiian BBQ chicken with rice & mac salad. $10.95 and huge servings. There is self serve water on the bar & soda fridge to help yourself. The food is delicious & I will return to try the other items, but these are my observations & minor suggestions. Personally, I felt the rice was a little too mushy. The Mac salad could be a little sweeter like local Hawaiian style, and the BBQ chicken could use a little more teriyaki sauce. Just a bit dry from it being BBQ d on the grill. Just add a little more sauce would help soften & moisten the BBQ chicken. My daughter ordered the chicken Katsu, it was delicious, but it wasn't served with gravy on top or on the side like pictured here. It was served with a tiny condiment container of some type of sauce. Not enough sauce for the amount of Katsu chicken that was served.

It was very helpful to see signage along State for the restaurant. I had just dropped off a family member to another function, so to make it worthwhile with the traffic congestion and cost of gas, I decided to have a late lunch here. Tiny spot with perimeter counter seating and just 4 four tops for onsite dining. Lots of people waiting for takeout, plus I saw signage about being understaffed. So I just placed and paid for my order via the touchscreen kiosk located to the left of the main counter. I ordered the laulau plate, which came with the usual two scoops rice, one scoop mac (macaroni salad) and a Safeway brand bottled water. Note for paid beverages, items are obtained from the refrigerated cases by the entrance. There's also complimentary iced lemon water available from the dispenser on the counter. There's some merch also available for sale. During my visit, I only saw powdered poi, jams, jellies, and some snacks. Ambiance was created via Alexa playing island tunes per one of the staff members request. Eventually I did get my order, as did others. Visually it looked promising. However, as I started eating, the first scoop of rice was a bit mushy. I ate one, the other I brought home. The mac salad was okay. The laulau was also okay, but it was a bit disappointing that it was just pork and no butterfish (sablefish) visible. The pork was very tender and succulent, just missing the fish component. With tax & tip, this was a little over $27. On the fence, whether this would merit a return visit.

HI LIFE is an exception, and will be a go-to going forward. The Poke sho-ka-do box is a great option for open minded first-timers. It's a huge amount of food, easily satisfying two and giving you a nice sense of the variety of fish and marinades on offer. Note that it's a fixed set, so you'll likely end up with some marinades/fish you prefer over others. The mayo-base poke wasn't my jam, but that's personal preference. One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. I want to mention that the workers were all very kind and I had no problems with service. Even though we ordered at the counter, they checked in at our table multiple times. Unfortunately, the food fell flat. The Mochiko chicken was flavorless and served with a sweet chili sauce that tasted just like the kind I have from the grocery store. I thought Mochiko chicken was supposed to be flavorful on its own, even without a sauce. Also the portion was kinda small for the price. The Kahlua pork bowl had pork, but also what tasted like loco Moco gravy... which was a good gravy, but not what we really wanted on top of Kahlua pork. When we saw that it came with "gravy" for the bowl description on the menu, I was thinking it would taste something more like the pork itself. Also, it was heavy on the rice. Lastly, the guava cake had a nice soft airy texture... but not enough guava flavor. It is huge, but mostly air. We didn't order it to-go, but it came in a to-go container rather than on a plate. I felt it was overpriced at almost $10 per slice. Overall, my experience was just alright. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't need to return.

No more drive through window and tiny retail spot. Bremerton's Manette neighborhood has become a destination detour with Saboteur Bakery, Vim & Vigor, and now Cafe Kai! Their new location is located at the corner of 11th and Perry with adjacent street parking. Upon entering, bright interior and sleek, streamlined design. Same welcoming vibe. That day we've been having a progressive eating mindset on our drive from Shoreline, Seattle, Tukwila, and now Bremerton. We had better restraint and bought only two Teriyaki Spam and one Hawaiian Hot Dog musubis, plus a bag of Li Hing gummies. Their menu features several musubis and refreshing beverages. I also enjoyed my brief convo with one of the owners, Jamie Cancel. There's something really welcoming when meeting indie business owners whether from Oahu, Kauai, Maui, the Big Island or on the mainland. It's that genuine sense of ohana or family I've consistently experienced. Musubis were nicely wrapped and piping hot. That day it was sunny and breezy leaving Cafe Kai with the goods. Now if it had been a bit warmer, with sand & surf nearby, wearing Tshirt, shorts, and slippahs with two fisted musubis from Foodland or Pukalani Superette, sigh as I digress in a brief daydream. The online menu asked what two sides you want with the Loco Moco. It showed a plate with two burgers, two eggs on a large bed of rice plus gravy...and what looks to be macaroni salad for 13.75. It asks what you want for your first side. It asks what you want for your 2nd side. I am guessing you get 2 sides with the rice/burgers. I was not real sure. So I asked for 2 sides of macaroni. It asks for mini or 2.50 for regular. I am thinking they will give you reg. side macaroni for 2.50 more. I go back and ask for mini. I do not need that much macaroni. Very disappointed to open the take out container to find zero rice and one small burger with an egg sitting in gravy and 2 sides of macaroni. They need to make this more clear. You only get 2 burgers and eggs if you add 2.50 (regular size). If you choose mini its not for the size of the sides but way less meat. I believe the photo and wording were very misleading. We also ordered Mochiko Chicken....Macaroni salad and broccoli, also a mini. I had it once before, somewhere else, and loved it. Ordered a Hawaiian Chicken BBQ plate, again mini and 2 sides. Did not like either of them. Hawaiian chicken BBQ was like a chicken thigh flattened with soy sauce maybe...no sweetness etc. They both kind of tasted the same. My 2 adult kids barely ate any of it. This was a real treat for us on a very sad day and it was not what we were expecting.....The macaroni salad was just ok...if I added salt. Pretty much the same interior, no overhead music, and straightforward table service. There were three others dining onsite, but also later overheard phone orders taken followed with brisk takeout pickups. They also have the capacity for catering with product, prices, and serving pan sizes posted on the wall. The Homie ordered the loco moco with overeasy eggs, plus their standard cheeseburger. He was pretty happy with the outcome. Consistent to his previous experience, but also took note of the quality and reasonable cost for the cheeseburger. I opted for the laulau plate which came with the requisite two scoops steamed rice and one scoop mac (Hawaiian style macaroni salad) with a sizeable laulau. I unwrapped the outer ti leaves and cut into the taro leaves (steamed like spinach) to reveal succulent pork and tender butterfish inside. This was great with a little added shoyu. Spot on delicious! The ice water also hit the spot. Perfectly chilled without any aftertaste from a pitcher. None of that tepid water in a stoppered top glass bottle or carafe. Refreshing!
