I wish I took a picture but I was so hungry at 2PM trying to catch my ferry that I just devoured the poke bowl. I got two salmon scoops and the salmon chunks are nice and big (some people don't like the big chunks), but I like it. It reminds me of sashimi or nigiri. I also like the unique toppings like the pickled (eggplant?) or cucumber that they use is unique and tastes so good paired with the poke. For around $20, it's not bad but it's on the smaller side. I gave it 5 stars for freshness, uniqueness of toppings and quality. The taste was sooo good. I can see how there are reviews about this place on social media. It's worth the hype, I would go to bainbridge just for the poke! Also it's right by the ferry terminal so it's conveniently located right by the ferry for pedestrians to just walk to. It's a little unassuming place right by the parking lot. I initially thought it was a gas station. they also have a little shop inside. You'll go right past it if you follow the road where cars enter and exit the ferry on Bainbridge Island. We were able to access it easily by walking on the sidewalk. Looks like it used to be a gas station or auto shop, so definitely a unique feel. Totally casual. Order at the register and they bring out your order when ready. Indoor and outdoor seating. My wife and I stopped by Hi Life for lunch on a recent visit to Bainbridge Island. Between the two of us, we shared the Shokado Bento Box ($40.00). We were on the fence on whether or not this would be enough food initially and contemplated ordering more food but I'm glad we did not. The spread of eight different poke bar items -- 3 varieties of ahi and Atlantic salmon, one scallop, and one tako, was more than enough to fill us up. The fish here was all really fresh tasting and properly prepared. There wasn't a single bite that was stringy or tough to chew. I also liked that none of the poke were overly salty. During a recent visit to Hawaii, I found that most of the poke I had there needed to be eaten with rice because they were so over-seasoned. Glad to see that was not the case here! From the bento box, my favorite item was tied between the scallops and one of the salmon pokes topped with an aioli. Fresh fish, good vibes, tough-to-beat value. What's not to like? While Bainbridge is a great weekend destination, I've always found the food to be a bit underwhelming. HI LIFE is an exception, and will be a go-to going forward. The Poke sho-ka-do box is a great option for open minded first-timers. It's a huge amount of food, easily satisfying two and giving you a nice sense of the variety of fish and marinades on offer. Note that it's a fixed set, so you'll likely end up with some marinades/fish you prefer over others. The mayo-base poke wasn't my jam, but that's personal preference. One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. There's limited indoor seating by the service counter, but most tables are under the overhang where gas pumps would have once been. I'd go at a slightly off-time if possible to ensure you get a seat! The portions are incredibly generous, but what really stood out was how fresh and high-quality everything tasted. Our total was about $100 which is so good considering how good the poke was. The staff were also super kind and helpful. We were originally about to order three boxes, but they actually recommended sticking with two, saying it would be enough and they were completely right. We were stuffed. Each bento box comes with a variety of poke styles (9) you can mix and try, which made the whole experience even better. Each fish consisted of a liiiight soy? marinade, mayo, and spicy mayo version. The island bento consisted of a small chowder, small curry, seaweed salad, crab salad, and tuna mayo on top of rice. We visited Hi Life during our day trip from Seattle! The service is what you would expect at a casual eatery. You decide what you want to eat and drink (order at kiosk). The staff will bring out the food to the outdoor dining by area. I found the truffle poke to be just mayo poke - it doesn't taste like truffle enough at all. This place reminds me of a beach shack selling fresh fish by the sea. I enjoyed their salmon poke bowl though I wished the salmon pieces were cut a bit smaller. My friend mentioned that the fish wasn't fishy at all which is always a good sign. Their hojicha latte was pretty good too but I would probably try something different next time. The spam musubis seem to be a popular choice since they were already sold out by the afternoon. When I say beach shack vibes, I mean it. The place basically only has outdoor seating, and depending on where you sit, you might have to deal with a few flies or relentless sun. Bainbridge is very much a one and done thing as far as touristy stuff goes, but this place alone has us planning on making another trip just to eat here. I had the opportunity to hop on a ferry with my husband on a Thursday afternoon, to Bainbridge Island. We strolled down the town for about two hours and found a place to eat. We tried Hi Life as it had good reviews, and we got the Unagi bowl and the chirashi bowl. The unagi bowl was the best unagi I've ever had in my whole life..! I was so surprised how juicy and tender the meat was. The chirashi bowl was filled with seasoned raw salmon, tuna, octopus, imitation crab meat, spam and salmon roe. I highly highly recommend both dishes. I am sad this place is a ferry away. I would probably come to this restaurant every week if it was in the inlands. Service is nice, all very attentive. Restaurant has a opened seating area, and it's a pretty big space. I am so glad I tried this place for my washington trip. read more

I got the spicy ahi tuna bowl and wow, it was huge. Everything was super fresh and full of flavor. The bowl is pretty big, so if you're someone who usually doesn't finish your food, you might want to share it. I also had a beer, and it was poured just right super cold and refreshing. All around a great poke spot located on Bainbridge Island, right off the ferry exit. It looks like an old gas station repurposed into a cute little poke shop. I have tried the musubi rolls and they were just okay so I would pass on those next time :) You order at the counter. The workers have been friendly both times that I've gone. Bainbridge is the founding place of Pickle Ball but what really stands out to me is the POKE SHO-KA-DO "9" BOX from Hi Life! It's pricey but totally worth it for NINE different types of poke. All decent portions with generous toppings as well! It'll set you back about $45 but I sincerely mean it, when I tell you it's worth it. I took a ferry from Seattle for this poke box- it was an absolute NEED! Every piece of poke was tender and delicious, and saucy and scrumptious. It's been a few months and I still think about it regularly. Along with the box, I grabbed a spam musubi ($3.50) and its was so delicious! Truly the most delicious musubi I've ever had. So moist and flavorful, I should've bought five. We walked to the restaurant but there was nearby parking. Seating inside and outside, outside tables were large picnic tables- for larger or multiple groups. The person taking our order was very kind and patient while I asked silly questions and made decisions. Hi Life is an interesting little restaurant located in a renovated gas station. It's owned by the same restaurant group as Rondo, Gyo Gyo En, and Tamari Bar, and serves some familiar menu items shared with the other restaurants, but also some food that's only available here. The restaurant is mostly open concept with plenty of seating on the patio or inside under the shade. There are three parking spots right in front and it's located very close to the ferry holding area, so it's convenient to visit while waiting for the ferry. Islander's Bento ($20) - The pictures make this dish look tiny, but the portion size is pretty substantial. It comes with clam chowder in the first small compartment. The chowder is actually very good, surprisingly so for a place that doesn't specialize in it. It's thick and rich, with good clean clam juice flavor. The bit of rayu on top adds a bit of spice and smokiness. Mixing it into the chowder creates a pretty unique taste that I enjoyed quite a bit. In the other small compartment, they give their famous Area 206 curry - the same as with Tamari Bar and Rondo, and just as good as those places. Chock full of beef, making it chunky, thick, and rich, full of umami and curry flavor. It's almost like a curry bolognese! One of my favorite Japanese-style curries. In the largest compartment, there's firstly rice, perfectly cooked medium grain as always from this restaurant group. On top, a scoop of seaweed salad that is definitely made in house. It's not nearly as salty as some others. There's sesame mixed in, and the seaweed mostly has a good rubbery crunch, but some parts seem to be a bit mushy. It's not that vinegary and instead is more sweet with a more natural kombu-like umami. There's also a bit of an oiliness but no sesame oil flavor. There's a krab salad that's pretty typical surumi based salad. Nothing special, but good to eat on the rice. It's lightly dressed in mayo, and the flavors are balanced. Finally, there's some poke, which unfortunately is by far my least favorite part of the dish as a whole. The fish is mixed with mayo and sesame, then topped with small fried rice balls on top, adding a crunchy texture. Why do I say "fish" generically? Because I can't actually tell what kind of fish it was. The flavor is completely covered by the copious amounts of mayo smothering the fish. All I could taste was mayo, nothing else. At least I could tell it was fresh raw fish and based on the interior redness, it seems like tuna.... A really disappointing poke. Food overall a (4/5) Hi Life serves stellar curry and clam chowder, combined with subpar poke, at least for my tastes. Perhaps their other poke mixtures are better? Bathrooms - They have one on the inside, and a portapotty outside around the corner. read more

Hi Life is a favorite stop for me every time I visit Bainbridge Island. It's basically right next to the ferry and makes for a great lunch. The ahi poke bowl is solid and much better than more famous poke spots. I recommend the traditional marinade. I will say that Hi Life's parent restaurant Rondo seems to use higher quality fish and rice. They also have a spicy miso aioli that I would love to see at their BI store. The curry rice is also very good at Hi Life and perfect for brisk weather. There is no katsu, but that's perfectly understandable given the space. It is probably great with the onsen egg. Recommended for your first meal on the island, a quick dinner before the ferry or even a drink with their housemade highballs. read more

Like a 14 out of 10, I'm so devastated that this is restaurant is a ferry ride away but maybe that's for the best or else I'd be here multiple times a week. Fresh poke (as expected), but not just that- it's true Hawaiian style poke!! Also loads of cool flavor combinations that I can't imagine anyone would get tired of going back and trying new dishes. I went with one of the options on the summer menu I believe which was a seared salmon poke bowl. The seaweed salad was super refreshing, salmon was unbelievable, and overall it was a very satisfying meal. It's hard to go wrong with seafood in the PNW, but this spot really stood out to me. Totally worth allll the hype. I was so excited to eat I forgot to take a photo. Parking - paid parking lot nearby, but if you take the ferry over, you can just walk! it's right before the main downtown area of Winslow.
