(you know they love their jobs) We ordered the fried moco fried rice that was delish!! the fried rice was so YUM! The garlic chicken was OK. To me it reminded me of orange flavored chicken, nothing to brag about. Now if you want something to brag about talk about the deep fried spam musabi with ponsu sauce.... yummmmie.. so if your gonna talk about this place.. talk about the fried moco fried rice and deep fried spam musabi. Thank goodness we came at the right time! It was busy and crowded but boy there was a party of 19 after us and parties of more than 3. Whew.. Da Kitchen is an institution on the island of Maui for local style dine in food. It is located only minutes from Kahalui International Airport(OGG). Parking is plentiful in the shopping mall strip it is located in. For those who like spam, Da Kitchen features quite a bit of menu items that uses this local delicacy as its ingredients. From fried spam musubis to spam fried rice, there's plenty of selection here. Additionally, they serve local favorites like loco moco's and hamburger steak plates. Da Kitchen is also world famous since it was featured in Bizarre Foods on the TV Food Network. Host Andrew Zimmerman visited here and tried multiple spam dishes. We ordered Hawaiian Mixed Plate, a burger, loco moco, friend spam musubi. The Hawaiian Mixed Plate includes lau lau, long rice, a scoop of white rice, and kalua pork. The loco moco was delicious as well as the burger which tasted fresh. There isn't anything special in these plates except for the fried spam musubi, which this restaurant is known for. I have a lot of experience w Hawaiian food, I would say this place is OK when it comes to the taste of their food. I ordered the fried spam musubi which was just ok. Literally, it's just a spam musubi fried, nothing more. The taste was ok, I wish they would put more of the sweet sauce in it. Since they are known for their great loco moco, I decided to give them a try. This was a bit hard for me since I'm a pescetarian and all of their loco mocos have meat in them. I ordered the Polynesian paralysis moco without the pork. Basically it's just a fish tempura, fried egg and gravy. The taste was good and the serving is huge! It can totally feed 5 people! I ended up taking most of it to-go. Their Hawaiian fried rice was good if you love meat because it has big chunks of spam and bacon slices. For me it was really difficult to eat it. The derive was also fast. When I got there, they were full and there's a wait outside. I had to wait for 10 minutes and my table was ready. After I ordered, food came in fast too. Another good thing about this place is it's really close to the Kahului airport. And the bad thing obviously is there's gonna be a lot of tourist. Chicken katsu moco 17.99- I should have shared this because it was a huge portion. That's how they get you. I wish there was a smaller portion for half the price. It was good and I did not finish it. I even shared my meats and fried rice with 2 friends and still had leftovers. Inside the moco was katsu chicken and a beef patty with a fried egg and fried rice with mushrooms and grilled onions. Deep fried spam masubi was good but the regular is better. The only difference is the batter on the outside layer is deep fried. It needed more sauce. When I bit into the masubi, the whole thing fell into pieces. Cost 5.99 for the deep fried and the regular without deep fried is 3.99 Ice tea unsweetened bottomless was 3.60 it was good The service was slow and the workers seem like they did not want their tip when we asked for napkins and knives, we received 1 without the other. We also asked for straws and the waitress took a while. Food is good, service was like they were in the back hiding it seems. In the end we did not get our drink refilled. Overall the place is alright. My friend recommended this place and I am disappointed. I would put da kitchen in the "too hyped" category. read more

Da Kitchen is da bomb! Hubbers and I ordered the mixed plate and we loved all of it! The Teri chicken was cooked perfectly it was full of flavor. The katsu chicken and pork were crispy and delicious. Solid 4 stars for our experience here last week. We went on Friday at 6:30 expecting a long wait for a group of five but was pleasantly surprised to know only two small groups were on da waiting list ahead of us. Da wait was only about 10-15 minutes which gave us time to chill and check out da menu. Da dining area is pretty small with a handful of tables. Service was quick and our food came out in about 5 minutes. Da five of us split two Hawaiian plates and a loco moco. Da Hawaiian plates were massive ('choke' as used to say in Hawaii)! Kalua pig was moist and flavorful, seasoned perfectly with salt. Small servings of lomi salmon and poi- next time I'll order extra of these as they were really fresh and ono. Da lau lau was my favorite. I hadn't had lau lau probably in five years or so since Helena's in Honolulu. It was good sized and tasty but I couldn't find any fish or chicken in it. My daughter later confessed she ate da fish. Not sure if she actually ate fish as I found no evidence of fish in da lau lau. I appreciated that they brought out a tiny green salad to make me feel a bit healthier about myself but it really was just a garnish on our plate. The potato/ mac was excellent. My son devoured da loco moco and didn't even offer anyone else to try until he almost fell over from a food coma. We ordered guava cheesecake to go since we had to be rolled out of the restaurant after our meal. Overall a very enjoyable experience. $28 for a Hawaiian plate but more than enough food for two hungry people. Everything was fresh and well prepared. My only complaint was that our table under the wall menu smelled like a dirty rag. I tried to convince myself it was just cilantro. I wished they served beer also. And opihi, but that's asking for a lot. Would definitely recommend and will be back next time we're in Maui. Will probably do take out next time as their take out business was brisk. If you're looking for some grinds, Da Kitchen is the place to be. With dishes that will fill you up, there's no other choice. Here on Maui for work, all I hear is, "you gottatry Da Kitchen." The last two times being here, unfortunately I wasn't able to eat here. Now that I am able to, I'm gonna make sure it's worth my while. When you get here, as expected, there's a line. All you need to do is sign in on their tablet and you'll get a text message of your seating status. On this particular day, they were filming for the show Man vs Food, which was pretty dope. Being the star I am, I was asked to sign a release if I were to appear in this segment, lol. On to the menu. With tons of dishes to choose from like appetizers, salads, and entrees, there's lots to choose from. The prices of each dish may seem pretty high, but it's well worth every penny. I decided on the Notorious B.I.G. Moco. And let me tell you, it sure was B-I-G! With layers of food starting with the pork fried rice, hamburger patty, chili, Mexican cheese, Portuguese sausage, spam, and mushroom onions, you won't know where to start. The Mixed Plate was a huge portion. It included teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, chicken katsu and breaded mahi-mahi. The Mini Kalbi Ribs was just the right portion. It came with a side of pickled veggies, rice and green salad. Everything we had were flavorful. Surprisingly my fav out of everything was the breaded mahi-mahi. There was a ton of hype online about this place, so it was a definite "must try" during a visit to Maui. It's very close to the airport in a shopping plaza with a decent-sized parking lot out front. During our visit both of the bathrooms in the plaza were under construction, and there were "porta potties" with a portable hand washing station out front. When we arrived it was not too busy (around 4pm), but it definitely started filling up when we left. The interior is cool with tons of Hawaiian/surfer decorations with unique flair. The server was good; she was friendly and attentive with good menu recommendations. We tried the deep fried spam musubi. It has a crispy breading on the outside but didn't feel overly fried or greasy. A bit on the bland side, but the accompanying sauce helped a bit. It's quite a bit more expensive (I think double the price) than the regular spam musubi. Then we tried the saimin and beef teriyaki platter. The samin was OK... it had very thick ramen-style noodles instead of the expected thin noodles. The menu said the noodles are handmade in Pa'ia town, though, which is cool. The beef teriyaki was quite good. A huge portion of tender and flavorful meat with plenty of rice and macaroni/potato salad to go with it. For dessert we tried the salted caramel cookie sundae and the blueberry cream pie. The sundae was disappointing. Basically a cookie on top of/mixed into soft-serve ice cream. The pie was quite good. A thin layer of blueberries on top of a creamy, custard-like filling. The crust was unique. It was more like a filo dough rather than a traditional pie crust. Overall, this was a solid average to slightly above average meal. We would definitely be open to returning and trying other dishes! read more

Best Plate Lunch and Hawaiian food on the island! I was sad to hear that the Kahului location closed, but was very excited to find out they opened at a new location in Kihei. The restaurant has a small dine-in area (~6 tables), and you can also place orders for take out. We had the Mixed Plate and a "Special" Combo of Kalua Pork and Teriyaki Beef. Their Kalua pork is the best I've ever had, hands down, and their Teriyaki Beef is extremely tender and flavorful. Their katsu dishes (chicken and fish) are also excellent. The only disappointing thing was that they no longer have an poke bowl. Their poke was the best on the island and maybe they'll bring it back again someday. Came here last year for pupus and it was good. Came for lunch recently and it was good but I feel there has been a bit of slippage. There's a good-sized lunch menu and lots of daily specials. I had the garlic chicken (special, $14.50). I wanted the crispy fried wontons but they included shrimp, as did most of the similar appetizers. (Allergic to shrimp.) The waitress suggested the mandoo, I think it was. But then she came back and said it was fried in the same oil as the shrimp. I really appreciated that she told me this and decided to be safe. Got the BBQ beef sticks instead (2 pieces, regular menu). Both came out quickly, and were good, but not to the standards taste-wise I expected. The salad that came with the plate lunch was fresh. I spent $20 on the food (no drink ordered), but portions were large. I had more than enough for later. Two people could have easily shared this, unless they had enormous appetites. The couple at the table next to me experienced difficultly ordering. She wanted fresh fish, but it was frozen. Also the kitchen would not do any substitutions. This was in order to keep things moving so they could turn over tables quickly at peak times. Plenty of free parking in the lot. It's back behind Krispy Kreme in a smaller strip mall. It's a nice restaurant and everyone I interacted with was pleasant. read more

The first restaurant I visited in Maui turned out to be pretty disappointing overall, with inattentive, disorganized service and less than satisfying food and drinks. A big pet peeve of mine is when someone introduces themselves as your server and then you never see them again. Why bother? That happened at Da Kitchen, we met our server, and then the rest of our meal consisted of hastily (and incorrectly) delivered food from bussers. I say incorrectly because we were served the wrong dish, which might have been caught if our initial server had been attending us. As far as food was concerned, I started off with a "fresh" lemonade, which tasted suspiciously like lemonade from concentrate (I'm looking at you, Minute Maid) with a $5 price tag. Next, we went for the fried spam musubi - a big leap for somebody who has a spam aversion. It turned out to be delicious! I wish I had ordered a banquet of these. The fried crust played nicely against the soft and chewy rice/spam interior, while the sweet/savory teriyaki glaze livened everything quite nicely. This was a complete win and should be the highlight of their menu. Finally, my friend and I both ended up trying the Kalbi beef short ribs. What a mistake. These were something like $22 and were pretty much inedible between how tough the (almost nonexistent) meat was and how bony and fatty the cuts were on the whole. A ridiculous price for a poorly prepared and selected piece of meat. At one point my friend was trying to cut hers and ended up flinging a chunk across the table due to the amount of force she had to exert. At least our meal was exciting! Bottom line, get the fried spam musubi and avoid the ribs at all cost. Da Kitchen is almost worth a trip just for the musubi. Almost. read more

LONG OVERDUE REVIEW. This was our first stop. One of many food stops on our Maui trip in June 2017. The restaurant was about 5-10 mins away from OGG. We arrived at the restaurant before the lunch rush hour, around 11:35 local time. Place was pretty packed already but was able to be seated right away. We didn't realize how BIG the portions were and ordered 2 appetizer and 2 entrees. Food was well seasoned, not overpowering. All food were fresh and very tasty. It just didn't WOW me. Local spot with many authentic and BIG portion dishes. So many great looking options on the menu that it was hard to choose. Share the Hawaiian Plate and Kalbi Ribs with the wife. Both dishes were great and fulfilled our expectations. The ribs are standard and what you would expect. However the plate had a little of everything (Pork Lau Lau, Kalua Pork, Chicken Long Rice and Lomi Salmon). It's like a huge sampler platter. The pork was my favorite but I loved the dish in general. SOOOO good!! I have celiac and love that they have a separate gluten free menu. I ordered the kalua pork plate which comes with white rice and a side salad. I was skeptical about the dressing but it was amazing, and the pork itself was awesome and so flavorful! Not sure if it was on purpose, but I appreciated also that my gluten free meal was brought out by a separate waiter to avoid any cross contamination of gluten.
