On my vacation to Lahaina, we loved Kaleis so much that we went twice. Each time, I somehow managed to get a filling meal for under $10. On our first trip, I ordered the cheap eats $5 mochiko chicken: a generous portion of crispy, perfectly seasoned chicken over a bowl of rice with corn. It was filling enough that I even had some left over for when I wanted a little after dinner snack later in the evening. On our second trip to Kaleis, we went in for dinner. I was feeling less ravenous after being on a boat earlier in the day, so I ordered a bowl of saimin soup. This soup was also pretty reasonably priced for $8. For the unfamiliar: this is a Hawaiian ramen-ish soup, with a savory broth, char siu and fish cakes. It was cozy and perfect for my queasy tummy. The service was outstanding each time we dined in, and we made sure to hit up the little gift stand on our way out which is stocked with some local jams in tropical flavors. Who doesn't love a little jar of guava jam? Next time I'm in the area I'm definitely returning! read more

We stopped by Kalei's and knew it was going to be good the second we walked in and saw the entire place full of locals. That's usually the universal island sign that you found the right spot. We ordered Da Bento, the crispy chicken mandu, and the $12 four meat plate special. Honestly, everything was good. Portions were huge and packed with classic Hawaiian comfort food flavors. The meats were flavorful, the fried items had a great crunch, and the rice tied everything together perfectly. The crispy chicken mandu was probably the sleeper hit. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and hard to stop eating once you start. The Da Bento gave a little bit of everything, which was perfect for trying multiple local-style dishes in one plate. The four meat plate special felt like a challenge issued directly to my stomach and somehow still disappeared. This isn't a fancy touristy Instagram-food type of place. It feels authentic, relaxed, and local. Just solid Hawaiian comfort food served in big portions with people around you who clearly eat there regularly. IMHO Discovered Kalei's franchise on our last visit and was very impressed. This trip, we dined at Kalei's three times because their food, service, portion and price were consistently good. On our first visit this trip, we ordered the Crispy Pork Belly Plate, $19, and the Cheap Eats special of Mochiko Chicken, hot dog, rice and corn, $7. Did I mention their all-day Happy Hour special on Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Heineken is $3.50?!! On our second visit, I decided on the 'Hangover" which consisted of a cheeseburger & fries plus a bowl of saimin, for only $16. Hubby ordered the "Four meat special", mochiko chicken, beef, hot dog and Pork (?) with rice and corn for $12 (?), I think. Our last visit, we enjoyed a Breaded Ono burger, $11, a Cheeseburger, $13, and a side of crinkle fries, $5, and a dessert order of Chantilly croissants (which they are known for), $7.50. Nice crispy crunch, yet chicken is still tender and juicy. The batter had a slight hint of sweetness to it from the mochiko breading. I would definitely order again. Our first time trying Kaleis. You have to order first and seat yourself anywhere. The food was really tasty, fulfilling and satisfying. My bf ordered big kahuna he said it was delicious. I ordered da bento it was a really big portion very crunchy for the mochi chickens, shrimp. Overall was yummy with different kinds of meats. My son ordered cheese burger with fries off the kids meal, just have to add your preference of condiments from the table. The diner was nice and clean. Staff was friendly. We usually eat at Kalei's Lunchbox in Wailuku as our first stop in Maui. We love the food, the staff and the people, in that order. We were excited to learn they were opening a location in Lahaina, in the Cannery (next to Safeway), and decided to try it for dinner last month (March 2026). It's very spacious and clean, and everything is new and shiny (they opened this location fairly recently). You order at the front desk, they give you a number and then they'll bring your food out when it's ready. The menu is on one of those electronic boards above the desk. They may have had hard copy menus, but one wasn't offered to me. I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember what I got, but I *think* it was the chicken katsu. They let me sub a green salad for the mac salad which made my gut very happy since green isn't a prominent color in our vacation fare. My husband got the mochiko chicken. His mochiko chicken portion was very generous, enough for him to have leftovers the next day. They were a bit more stingy with the katsu. Both dishes were prepared well. The restaurant itself was freezing. If I had to guess, I'd say the A/C was set at 67 or lower. The practically subzero temps made it hard to enjoy my meal; I was hell bent on getting out as quickly as possible in hopes of thawing out though the weather during our visit was less than ideal. I'm happy there is another restaurant in Lahaina and happier that it is affordable and serves good food. We've been to the Wailuku location a couple of times and decided to try this location since it was convenient. This restaurant was pretty spacious with a lot of seating. Though this restaurant seems new, the style was a bit dated. Kind of like a 80's Denny's style booth and chairs. You order at the counter, seat yourself and they bring you the food. The combo plate was also delicious, my favorite was the slice of spam and the mac salad. I would get a side sauce for the mixed place next time since I like a lot of flavor. Deeeelicious breakfast with my family at Kaleis, with great customer service, and food arrived quickly. The veggie omelette and breakfast potatoes was a winner, the loco moco unbeatable value, and the chicken Kalbi plate was a huge serving and tasty. On our way out we spied some cute booklets with original covers, Hawaiian made and perfect for presents for friends, and only $5! Love this restaurant, lovely decor and competitively priced, plus they serve a special $7 meal every day for anyone who wants a home cooked style meal at an affordable price. We loved every bite. I ate all of the mac salad. The spam musubi was good too. We did takeout since they were closing soon. The staff was wonderful. My husband likes diners and liked what he got. The service and staff were super nice but there was a tiny 1 inch black hair on the plate that I found after eating most of the food that left me disappointed and was the lasting impression I'm left with. Not sure if there is a difference between this Kaleis and Kaleis Lunchbox, but we really liked it! Got this as our last meal on Maui and it was recommended by our Road to Hana tour guide. It's conveniently located in the Lahaina Cannery mall, which we frequented during our vacation. Ordered takeout and brought it back to our resort so that we could watch the sunset. Big Kahuna: Comes with a fried fish filet, beef patty with gravy, mochiko chicken, rice, mac salad, tartar and a bbq dipping sauce. Least best was probably the fried fish, as the fish was bland and obviously overcooked, but dipping it in the tartar sauce made it a lot better. Also, a moment for the tartar sauce!!! It's super creamy and rich, exactly the kind of tartar sauce I like. The best on the plate was the chicken, which they give you a ton! It was good on its own but also good with the bbq sauce. The beef patty was okay and not great. Shrimp Katsu: David debated between this and the Beef Teriyaki, but after reading reviews seeing that others liked the shrimp Katsu in the Da Bento box, we went with this and it was definitely the right choice. There were about 6 shrimp and they were huge. The batter was perfectly crispy even though we had brought it back to our hotel. With the tartar sauce it just made it amazing. We received our takeout order quickly. The inside was clean although not many were dining in when we went, although there were several takeout orders after us. Stopped here for a quick bite as seeing this shopping center opened was a nice sight after what the area has been through over the years. Nice sized portion plates, which seem even more daunting if you dine in versus take out. A nice sized menu with options for all at a reasonable price compared to similar sit down style restaurants, especially once you get into the resorts or whaler's village. Always a fan of simple Hawaiian style plates that fill you up and just give you a comfortable feeling as you take in the aura of the island. I love having a bunch of different things on my plate to jump around to. Everything was great, and I'd order it again. I tried some of my mom's shrimp scampi (w/o vegetables), and that was delicious. It was super garlicky which I loved. I might order that next time. The fruit punch was standard and refreshing. I didn't care for the lava rocks. They weren't anything special, and they were overpriced. Each little ball of chocolate and cream cheese rolled in Oreo cost $3.50. My mom got a bag of the cinnamon sugar bagel slices which were super good. My aunt got the strawberry cheesecake which was sweet and yummy. You order at the entrance then find a table. We got a table for 12 of us no problem. The food came out quick and hot. We've eaten at Kalei's twice in three days...that should give you an idea of what we think of the place!! In the Cannery Mall where Denny's used to be, Kalei's has recently opened and is a GEM. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful! Very Maui-centric, and with plenty of space. We love Kalei's Lunchbox in Wailuku and we are so excited this place opened in Lahaina. I got Da Bento on both visits because I couldn't decide, so I just opted to try it all! It had mochiko chicken, fried jumbo shrimp, spam, grilled teri beef plus rice and Mac salad. Such a good plate!!! My daughter absolutely loves their saimin. My husband gets the teri beef with rice plate which always slaps. We've been coming to Maui once a year for the past 4 years, (From Oahu) and this is our first time ever eating at Kalei's! And BRAH dont let this diner be a a bite you pass on by. Located near Lahaina Safeway and across the main road from Ross you'll find this cozy diner. Ample parking with it being already part of the shopping center. We placed a phone order because it was near by and we were to tired to dine in anywhere. Here's some quick info I learned about this place. -3% credit card charge. No fees for debit or cash payments -Any phone orders over $50 required manual credit card payment over the phone -Dining in, you grab a menu and order at the counter before getting assigned a seat (very beautiful indoor seating with hawaiian art and puakenikeni lei art throughout the walls) -they have daily onolicious specials! Including cheap eats! The night i went they had mochiko chicken plate with rice and corn for only $7! Placing a phone order on a week day took only about 15-20 minutes turnaround time. We were quoted 10-15 but when I arrived I saw they got busy. One girl working the phone orders and in person orders with pick ups. She was very nice and patient with everyone she assisted. At the front counter they have in-store merch (cute items!) And 4 TV screens that tell you how to order and so many pictures of their food! The pictures looked so good the girl ordering infront of me saw them and kept adding on plates based off the pictures shown LOL. We ordered the breaded pork teriyaki, big kahuna plate, side order onion rings, keiki grilled cheese, and keiki cheese burger. Everything was so fresh, crispy, flavorful with each bite. We were looking for a spot that had good Mac salad, & the dope locals at Local Motion across the street recommended Kaleis. We stopped & got just the Mac salad to add to our Foodland noms. We liked it so much that we went back for dinner the next day to get some plates. For the non-locals, order at the front, then take your number & a seat. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the food. I got the loco moco, & it was sooooo good! Def a fav at our table. Arrived as a walk-in customer ready to order takeout of hurricane fries to give family an experience of Maui for $10 & I even added $2 tip but then I received fries with barely hurricane & more like a drizzle -- that's the bad news. We stopped in here on our last day in Maui. The staff was so friendly and really took time to let us know about their favorite dishes. One thing that annoys me is when people give reviews and try to compare a restaurant to another spot that is in a different class. Set realistic expectations as you get food from a restaurant in a mall where you'll spend less than $80-$100. I can say that we went there with proper expectations and Kaleis surpassed what we expected. Why not 5 stars people? They deserve it, maybe that's why the locals don't really care for tourists, be more kind in your reviews! Look at those pictures, where else will you get food that not only looks great, but tastes great, and with terrific service? Being expensive doesn't make it good! One of my favorite things about Kaleis is that when you're done there are plenty of shops to go browse around in, and all inside of an air conditioned mall.
